This is a little hole in the wall with 4 tables and a bar. The service isn't the greatest, but the food is delicious. GIGANTIC BBQ sandwiches with fries for $7. I would go there all the time if I lived there, and die prematurely from some sort of pork related heart illness. read more

The most authentic bbq place i have been to. When i travel for business, i try to go to THE place - and if you are looking for authentic, this is it. I ordered the daily special pork sandwich with golden sauce. The sandwich was excellent, though the meat was a little dry; the tasty golden sauce was a great remedy. I also had a hotlink on the side, and it was tasty, though a little bit spicy. The beer was cold, the food was good, and the atmosphere was great. Two of us had a great dinner, 2 beers each, and got out for $32, all at the oldest continually operating "beer by the drink" establishment in Missouri. read more

Perfect ambiance for BBQ (casual with some interesting things to look at on the walls). The food is great. This is a great place for OLD school barbecue. When I say old school what I really mean is the school they tore to build the old school. This is Kansas City barbecue at it's purest. Very simple very small. It is a little tiny (about 5 tables including booths) hole in the wall where you can great food and cold beer. The bartender is very nice and coached us on the choices. We got the sampler with a bit of beef ribs, brisket, pulled pork and ham. Skip the ham. The ribs were really good flavor but a little tough. The brisket and pulled pork were awesome in every way. This place is awesome! It's a teeny tiny place on an outer road that has lots of character. On the menu it says how the restaurant came to be and it's history. The place has a lot of old nik naks on the walls and wonderful service. My friend and I both got the pulled pork and it was more than enough food. It was a little dry for me but the sauce fixed that right up. I would recommend this place if you are a fan of the country-ish, small town service theme. Great BBQ!! read more

Picked this place off yelp because it seemed like people liked it and I was extremely disappointed. We were traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada from Saint Louis and thought we would stop at a local place. The food was okay, not the best BBQ I've had. That wasn't the problem though. The problem was the customer service, which was pretty much non existent. The lady who runs the place is very impersonal and acts like she is doing you a favor being there. She barely said anything to us and when she did, she was sarcastic. Funny thing is, there was multiple signs around the place saying "be nice or get out"...I guess they forgot their own rules?! read more

I visit Springfield about 5 or 6 times a year. One of my favorite places to eat is Pappy's. The food tastes great to me and I love the neighborhood dive atmosphere. Smoking is no longer allowed anywhere indoors in Springfield (new city ordinance) but when it was allowed it didn't bother me. Quite often the have live music, which is tough in cold weather because they squeeze the musicians in front of the entrance! Great service too. I love it. read more

Just had their pulled pork sandwich and a side rib. I thought the pork was a bit dry to my tastes but the rib was nicely done. They had a honey mustard sauce which was a tad on the vinegar side and a standard red bbq sauce that would be perfect with a bit of heat in it. I'd give the meal a 3.8 out 5 and the atmosphere of the place a 5/5. I love some old school restaurants. read more

Pappy's Place is a bar that just happens to serve food. They are renowned for their BBQ. I had not been there for 35 years when I took my husband there a few days ago. The food was delicious. We both ordered the sampler plate which was 2 pork ribs, a generous portion of pulled beef BBQ and a generous portion of pulled pork BBQ and a thick slice of grilled city ham. We also received 2 sides and bread for $12.95. I ordered french fries and fried okra for my 2 sides. The french fries are not hand cut, which is important to me, but they were still good. The fried okra was wonderful. I ended up taking my plate portion home and making 2 more meals out of it. Large amount of food. The ribs came with BBQ sauce on them as well as the BBQ beef. There were bottles of mild and hot BBQ sauce that came with the meal. I used the mild and felt the flavor was very good. My husband used the hot and felt it was very spicy. Not necessarily a bad thing as he likes spicy food. Also ordered iced tea. Soft drinks and tea come with 1 refill. Waitress very nice and friendly. Located in older residential low-socio economic neighborhood. Has been in business since before Prohibition. Has the longest continous liquor license since the 1920's. Very smoky. If one has problems with smoke, eat outside or get to go. Atmosphere quaint. Old beer cans and bottles line the walls. Sports memorbillia all over. read more

For the life of me I cannot understand the reviews here! The place is a "dive" type, which usually means good BBQ. We were actually looking for a place my husband had been to before and this looked similar - when we pulled up he realized it wasn't the right place, but decided to try it anyhow. A woman waitress was great and took our order, but left shortly thereafter. That was the highlight of the meal. The food was inedible. I had the ground bacon/pork burger. First, asked for mayo as a condiment, but it was served dry. Ok, things happen. Then, I bite into it and it's rare/still pink in the center. I asked for them to cook it some more and was refused - told that is how it's supposed to look because of the bacon. I did not feel at all comfortable eating it (I both photographed the "rare" bacon burger and took the leftovers to go just in case I fell ill and needed it tested!) My date ordered the BBQ ribs. They were still COLD inside. Fortunately, the server was willing to at least put them in the microwave. The ribs appeared to be steamed (not smoked) and then slathered with BBQ sauce. Sides consisted of fried ocra (meh - absolutely NOTHING special about it), fries (was all I ate) and mayo-based slaw (also meh). would NEVER go back to this place for the food. read more
