Arrived in Springfield, MO and the first place we hit was Pappy's. A tiny, cozy cafe rich in history and character. Pappy's had been around since 1903, operating as different businesses: groceries, shoe repair, then a restaurant. Today, it serves great BBQ with a bar in the neighborhood. When we walked in, a few tables were being served and the bar looked to be seated by locals having their nightly beer. It wasn't a minute long before we were welcomed by our lovely server, who also happened to be the owner! She gave us a brief overview of the long history of Pappy's and also gave us bbq recommendations. I was starving and cleaned up my plate of Pulled Pork with Okra and BBQ Beans. It totally hit the spot and I would have it again and again. On the tables, they also have their homemade BBQ sauce and golden mustardy sauce that you gotta try. read more

Owners were very interactive. Shared history of this iconic restaurant. Menu was diverse, and I opted for the Patty Melt sandwich after consulting with the Mrs. She advised that she insisted that it be on the menu, because she was a lover of a good patty melt. She was/is SPOT ON!!!! In my top 3 I've ever had. (I'm 64) Toast was grilled perfectly, nothing soggy here. Burger patties were flavored great. Onions were screaming hot, but perfectly seared. Thousand Island dressing offered on the side, which I prefer so everything isn't slipping away. 9/10 all day long. Will be back. read more

This place has continued to decline Pappy's has always been a local tradition for a cold Pabst, and a BBQ sandwich "that's not really BBQ." But you have to remember this place was around before there were any real BBQ joints in town, so it was all most people knew. Since the new owner took over I had heard he was making even better food. Well it had been awhile since I was in, so I figured might as well try it again. The business could really use a facelift. I mean the owner got a turn-key business for under $80k. I was hoping he would put some money in repairs to the building and it's interior. I asked what exactly he updated in the food area, and he replied the quality of meats. My wife ordered the classic pork sandwich, and I ordered chili cheese fries. Her sandwich tasted pretty much like the old version; except a little smaller, and my chili cheese fries were okay at best. It's basically truck-stop food at high prices. I really wish the owner at least fixed the place up. This place keeps a minimum of 3 stars strictly on being a Springfield tradition, and it's historical significance. read more

We went here one time and was able to get waited on immediately. Food came out quickly and it was really good...well tonight we went again and it was very disappointing. We waited 35 minutes with never being waited on. We shouldn't have waited that long, but there was live music. We ended up leaving and probably won't be back. read more

Stopped in Springfield on the way home from moving our daughter back home from college. She wanted killer BBQ. We found killer BBQ. Wifey had the ribs, daughter had the pulled pork, I had the sliced brisket. The pitmaster was nice and also brought us a sample of burnt ends. This place was great! We also tried out a number of sides. The favs were the potato salad, slaw, and bakers beans. The Mac n Cheese was also great with bits of ham and I believe peppers. This place has a cool vibe, old bar that went out of business the bought and kept in close to original condition. Great draft beer selection and looked like a respectful bourbon selection. Had to go three times to be sure .... yup, spectacular. It's a little neighborhood dive bar looking place with top shelf Que. Runs 1st time rocked. Our preference is without sauce, so had to scrape off .... no doubt we'll try it again and ask for no sauce. Tender but not mushy spare ribs with enough smoke and a good rub. The pulled pork sandwiches are generous, and great. Smokey, moist, and a hint of sweetness in the rub. Needs zero sauce, but theirs are good. A tomato based and a golden, mustardy one. Inside is full of their history with photos and memorabilia of the place over the years. It's been some kind of business since early 1900s. Go. Go twice. Had a slab of ribs to share. Here a slab is a full 14 bones as pigs were designed. Surprised how many other places serve short pigs now. Meat was good with an well smoked flavor and a ring showing on the rib sides. Only down side was the meat was a little too tender to my liking on the verge of falling off the bone. Oh man for $7, you get about a pound of tasty pulled pork on a bun with pot. chips. The pork is tender and tasty, the home made bbq sauce is tasty. Chips are whatever, and ,the bun is stale. Its all about the pork, so I didnt care, plus they top it with some nice coleslaw. You can add a rib or smoked sausage for an additional $2.50 each, so of course I had to try both. The sausage was spicey and delish. The rib ( thank God I didn't get a full rack) sucked. I don't know if it was an off day or they were hitting the moonshine out back, but it tasted like burnt charcoal. Service wise - just from looking at me and seeing I was from out of town, she could barely pretend to tolerate me. I asked what was the best to eat in the place and you think I wanted her social security #. I guess they only care to talk to their 2nd cousins and an occasional farm animal if the mood strikes. I was looking forward to returning to Pappy's. I knew it was a hole in the wall but that's fine. I went on a Tuesday (they are closed on Mondays) about 2:30 (wanted to miss the lunch crowd). There was 1 customer so no problem in finding a seat. The waitress (she said she was related to the owners), said right off the bat that they were out of ribs and hot links. I had checked out their menu on their website and I had decided to get the Bluto sandwich (hot links and ham). I asked her why they were out of that on the first day of the week. She said they were really busy last week. Doesn't seem like much of an excuse since they had Sunday and Monday to smoke some ribs and make some hot links. She suggested their pulled pork sandwich (their most popular) which on their in store menu has a "golden" sauce. I'm from KC, so no South Carolina sauce on my sandwich:) I got the fries with it. The sandwich (regular size) came out on a small bun (lots of meat) minus the "golden" sauce. They have other BBQ sauces so I put some KC sauce on it. I took 1 bite and the bun fell apart. The meat was OK but there wasn't any flavor of smoke or anything - rather bland. I probably won't go back - I'm disappointed. Actually my pulled pork tastes better than what they served. The area is kinda off out of the way but people that know about it has been going there a long time and they have alot of regulars. This is a bar and grill, the sort of little hole-in-the-wall place where the "Coke" sign out front is larger than the sign that names the establishment. But it's been in business for a very long time and has a very friendly "down-home" atmosphere. One time when I went there, there was a lady selling farm-fresh eggs out of a cooler--that's how down-home it is! On the plus side, their barbecue brisket sandwiches are excellent (even if they do use store-bought buns). Very moist and tender meat, tasty barbecue sauce. On the minus side, they are a smoking-only establishment, so anyone with breathing problems may just want to call in their order and get it to-go. read more

I am shocked this place has so many high reviews. I could overlook the grossness of the place if the food was stellar, but i have had better bbq from cafeterias. It is a hole in the wall type establishment. Meaning seating is pretty beat up, floors are rough, place is dirty. After walking in i thought, well I will give it a shot because of the high rating on yelp and i was disappointed. I ordered their staple pulled pork with a rib and my wife got the bbq nachos. Positives: Service was friendly. Negatives: Food Was Very Bland, didn't finish my rib or sandwich and got a snack from another place on the way back home. My wife had about 4 bites of the nachos. The buns, fries and nachos themselves were very cheap tasting. The place was very dirty. Tables and chairs look like they are original. Floor is cracking. read more

Small hole in the wall in a small neighborhood on Main Street. They have the longest running liquor license in Springfield and were the first to serve after prohibition. The beer is served in a frost mug and everything down to the bar stools are old school. The building has a capacity of 23 people and they also have outside seating. It is truly an experience all in itself. I came here first with low expectations but was blown away. They food is always really good and their yellow bbq sauce is fantastic. If you can, get there for live music and sit outside on a summer night. It's an awesome time. read more

If you are not a local or a regular, who cares?! The lady that runs the place is awesome. Tell her where you are from. Tell her a story. She genuinely likes the people that come into her restaurant. The food actually is very good. Every time i go i get the daily special: Pulled pork with golden sauce and fries. It has never let me down once. Eating at pappy's feels like going back in time. Came to this place thinking that I'd end up enjoying one these great, all-American barbecue joints where the food is better than the Bandana's you're forced to hit up whenever that cue craving comes around. I thought wrong. I wasn't all that impressed with the food. I thought the pulled pork was dry, and the sauce I added to it (which also was unimpressive) didn't seem to help much. Also, we sat outside in this little backyard-esque area that is off to the side of the restaurant, where there was a washer set (that's "warsher" for my fellow Missourians) and some patio sets, but the whole thing just felt kind of hodge-podged. There's a lot of potential for this outdoor space, but it didn't seem like anyone had maintained it in years. The service at Pappy's Place isn't too bad, but the food and atmosphere left much to be desired. Might as well head back into town for some Bandana's. read more

Can't believe I've lived in Springfield my entire life and have never visited Pappy's place till now. Established as a restaurant in 1971, Pappy's is to this day one of the oldest standing restaurants in Springfield. Not only does it have a "dine and dive" feel, it is also a hidden gem. Don't let its rustic outward appeal deceive you! These people know how to do BBQ! From their pulled pork and shredded pulled succulent beef, to their racks of juicy ribs--Pappy's is sure to please any palate. Their ribs are on the heartier, more fatty side so I did have to carve quite a bit of the fat away. They come pre-sauced as well. But their sauce was tasty! Not too sweet; with a mesquite, savory, smoky and slightly sweep-maple flavor. Their shredded pulled beef was fantastic. Moist, tender and melt in your mouth deliciousness! I probably preferred that over the ribs to be honest. Their servings are hearty, and their prices are hard to come by. They have fresh draft beers and about 6 bar stools you can sit at while you wait for your food, or to just kick it and eat/have a drink. The service was surprisingly super friendly! I felt very at home. The man behind the bar was extremely attentive to our needs. I kind of felt as though I was in the Deep South getting served delicious barbecue! First off, I love the type of restaurants that aren't located on a strip. The kind that a neighborhood can call its own. One where you can ride your bike or walk to. The kind of restaurant that always has the same waiter and knows you by name. That's definitely Pappy's. I had the pleasure of trying their Brisket Sandwich. The small was large enough for me. It had a smokey taste to it that I didn't really like or dislike. And the portions were really generous. When I eat a Brisket Sandwich I like to slather the BBQ sauce on. I like a tangy BBQ sauce, the kind that pinches you in the back of the cheeks. This wasn't that BBQ sauce. This BBQ sauce didn't have much flavor and probably could have been substituted with ketchup and I wouldn't have noticed. The fries were delicious.
