First off, the sign is misleading. They do not serve alcohol here. We ordered the three catfish and two sides meal, so we got the cheesy corn and home fries. The meal also came with two hush puppies. The food was delicious. The hush puppies were cooked perfectly- crunchy on the outside and chewy inside. The fries were curly shaped, thin but not too thin. Perfect! Will definitely stop here again. This place needs to work on keeping food. I have tried to eat here on four occasions. Always coming in around 6:30 or maybe 7 pm. Twice this was on a Friday night. Every time they have been out of chicken and brisket as well as many sides. Either call an order in and take it home or just go to Rib Crib across the street. I've never had a problem with Rib Crib not having food and their staff is very friendly. read more

I went with the special - Pulled Pork or Pulled Chicken Sandwich with two sides. I got the Pulled Pork Sandwich, potato salad, and baked beans. The sandwiches come with coleslaw on it, which you can request to get on the side. I always take mine on the side (don't at me). Potato salad is to die for. Probably one of the best potato salads out there. Good flavor, spices, and always just so good. The baked beans and pulled pork are also really great options. Sometimes I like to get the cheesy corn. And at Whole Hog, you can even get a cookie or a brownie for a side. Can't beat that! I like to go with sauces #2 & #3 - the tomato vinegar style BBQ sauce. Whole hog threw me a couple If curve balls. No ribs with the 3 meat and they don't have Mac b cheese. Added a rib to the 2 meat and got the burnt end cheese corn. Beans were fine but nothing to write home about. Cheese corn was nice and very cheese, but not Mac n cheese. Pulled pork was above average. It had good flavor and some smoke. It was a little dry and was barely a stand alone meat. Brisket was below average. It may have been cooked in a crock pot. I think I taste liquid smoke. The ribs were dry and tasted heavily of paprika. I'm not going to bother with a full on review of the sauces etc. read more

Now, I had to drive back 90 minutes back to St. Roberts with the order. The only negative thing that I would have to say was that the brisket was dried. Pulled pork and the ribs were good. I can't say if the long drive was the cause or if the brisket came out that way. I would recommend that you order and dine in, maybe the brisket would have been in a better state. This is the second time I've eaten here both times it's just been kind of meh. This time I got the brisket plate with coleslaw. The coleslaw had no flavor other than cabbage. I don't know that there was any dressing on it at all it just looked like wet cabbage with maybe pepper in it. The brisket also basically had no flavor, definitely no smoke taste to it. It was also the thinnest brisket I have ever seen in my life. I don't know how they even sliced it this thin. Without barbecue sauce it would've had no flavor to it. I was there at lunchtime and ordered some daily special, it was described as a selection of different meats, served with 2 sauces and on top of a slice of bread. Side I chose was some sweet corn thing. Cashier kept complaining to me that she was tired and overworked, called me Ma'am then apologized and said she was tired. Meal arrived in less that a minute, it was saturated in sickly sauces, meat was so mashed up I could not tell what anything was and everything tasted the same. I come to Springfield once a year on business. I thought I would repeat my dining experiences from last year and come back to The Whole Hog. This time I tried a regular brisket sandwich that came with cole slaw. I also ordered a side of the potato salad and burnt cheesy corn. With a drink and tax the bill came to $12.02. I thought the brisket was very average. Nothing special that you can't get almost anywhere else. I believe rating it a 3 is generous. The potato salad is as good as I have ever had and rate a 5. The burnt cheesy corn is something I could eat as a meal by itself. It is a 5 also (could be almost a 6). I am lowering my overall score from a 4 to a 3. The sides here that I have had are fantastic. The meats are average at best. Last years chicken and this years brisket somewhat disappointed me. How can the sides be so great and the meats so average? Very disappointed with my experience and the quantity of food for the price I paid. Placed a pick up order, expecting a quick pick up. Was told the meal would be ready in 20 minutes. Arrived on time to "pick up" my order of $50 worth of food. Ended up waiting 20 minutes after the food was supposed to be ready. Called to check on the status of my order, only to learn that it hadn't been put together yet. Went in to get my order, waited another 5 minutes to pick up 2 regular size takeout boxes. Got home to find $50 worth of food was - 2 large spoonfuls of cheesey burnt ends, 1/4 cup of potato salad, a scoop of slaw, 1/2 a sausage, 3-4 overcooked slices of brisket and a palm full of pulled chicken. Very upset with the portion sizes. Will not be returning to this location again. I can get better BBQ and service elsewhere. read more

Every time I come to Springfield I try a different BBQ place. This is by far the best I have had here. Love all of the trophies in the windows, because they were well earned, and the Memphis in May trophies are awesome. Now to the food. Rack of ribs was amazing. True competition style ribs. The pulled pork and chicken were tasty, tender, and just the right smokiness. The sides are great, too. Slaw was perfect, beans were descent, and the potato salad was creamy and delicious. While visiting Springfield, MO we stopped in at Whole Hog Cafe after getting checked into our hotel. We ordered the Regular Beef Plate $10.99 and the 4 Rib plate $10.99. It comes with 2 sides. Drinks are separate. The brisket was moist, tender and flavorful exactly as it should be. My daughter had the ribs which she devoured. She cleaned her plate so that tells you how good everything was. We both had baked beans which were delicious. My daughter had the potato salad and she said it was the best that she's had in a restaurant. I had the coleslaw and it was so good. The only disappointment is that I also ordered what was listed on the menu board as "smoked green beans." I didn't feel like that is what I received. They looked and also tasted poured straight from a can and heated up in water. Some meat was tossed in for looks but there was no seasoning and no flavor whatsoever. They could have at least added salt. Maybe the cafe should remove green beans from the menu or make the effort to prepare them well. They are already proving that they can with the other sides that we tried. read more

Get the combo platter to try it all. This place is so good, we had to came back 3 times in the first week that we discovered it. After you have tried the combo platter, you should go for the Burnt End platter to up the flavor ante. If you don't like pork... I can't imagine who doesn't, you can go for the Half Chicken platter. Most meats are so flavorful, you don't need any BBQ sauce, but you should still try the 6 different sauces that's on the table. I highly recommend #5. How good is Whole Hog Cafe? Good enough for me to consider relocating to Springfield, MO. As long as I am guaranteed a pulled pork sandwich for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a fourth meal everyday. The exterior of the Cafe is unassuming, but the interior is nicely decorated and dimly-lit like a pub. There is ample seating within, although they offer speedy takeout service as well (if sitting in front of your computer devouring protein and carbs is more your thing). (: Everything on the menu sounded appetizing, which made it extremely difficult to narrow down my sandwich and side of choice. The 5 sauce options didn't help by exponentially increasing the number of different combinations either... I ended up going with the regular pulled pork sandwich (the regular is so filling already I can't even imagine how big the jumbo size is) with sauce option 1 and a side salad (to negate my guilty conscience). 100% delicious and totally hit the spot. They missed my coleslaw (boo!), but I'm not a huge fan of it anyway so I won't hold it against them. ...I don't know if the pulled pork has satisfied my craving or brought on a whole new one...but I hope to be back soon! read more

Maybe what I really liked the most was the choice in sauces. If there was an option for zero stars that's what I would be giving. The place only had 2 other customers at 630 on a weekday the empty parking lot should have been a clue. There's a little counter to order your food up front and then they call your number when it's done. Walking around you can't find a table that doesn't have a ripped table cloth on it. I ordered the whole hog platter and my daughter for the kids chicken with fries. All of the meat was cold and the potato salad tasted off. I enjoy Whole Hog quite a bit. It's a huge building that never seems to have more than a couple tables filled, which I think is funny. My favorite is the baked potato with pulled pork, but if you go later at night, they have been known to run out of potatoes. Why they don't run up to Price Cutter and buy a couple spares, I don't know. I am a dipper, so I enjoy the fact that there are six sauces on the table to try, but you have to ask for the spicy volcano sauce at the counter. Also, If you get bbq sauce to go, they charge you for it... I am also a fan of the 'burnt end cheesy corn,' which doesn't have any burnt ends in it and tastes like cream cheese and frozen corn...but I like it anyway. :) The brisket has been cooked differently every time I have ordered it, which is funny for a chain restaurant.
