This has got to be a new construction building, given its location on the Frontage Road of I-59, but they did a great job of making it look vintage, using 100 year old bricks, vintage railings and wood. So the vibe is relaxed and old school texan in an urban location. Papas is Houston tradition, bur only 2 of the 20+ locations are BBQ -- they are mainly famous for the Pappaduex seafood franchise. This BBQ pkace runs traditional, order at counter pour your own drinks so they dont even ask for a tip. The BBQ is top notch, the fries are really special, made from fresh potatoes and cooked perfectly. Free drink refills. Friendly staff.

Had a great opportunity experienced with Pappas BBQ catered to my work office where ambiance is beautifully staged by default. However, more importantly the employees assisting were very nice, quick serving, and generous with consistent portions. The traditional bbq flavor was strongly present. Overall, would recommend the brisket and sides to try when freshly served!

We decided to buy turkey dinner along with some sausage and brisket from pappas for Christmas Eve. Went to the south gessner one but they did not want to serve to go orders for Thanksgiving dinner so we left and came to this location after I called in and they said they do to go orders. My parents have been to this location several times in the past for Thanksgiving when we used to live in Alief years ago. Since living in Richmond, there hasn't been a location near us and it's been a few years since we last went to one. Decided to come by and buy some food for Christmas this time. First of all, the customer service was great unlike the south gessner location where the counter person was rude and refused to take to go orders. We were greeted by an employee when we came into this location. We decided to do take out instead of the usual dine in experience - order took around 10-15 min in total - we decided to grab some condiments since it was pretty busy with all the customers in the shop. The place had nice lighting, clean floors/tables and decent amount of space for dine in. Plenty of employees to cook and serve - and like I mentioned having a greeter at the door enhances first impressions. First time having turkey from pappas, as a fan of turkey I enjoyed it. The beans and stuffing were good too. The yams/sweet potatoes were actually really good compared to the ones I had in other places in the past for the holidays. Brisket and sausage were pretty good. Sauce was okay but decided to have my own sauce (sweet baby ray) which made the eating experience better due to it being a bit sweeter and colder. Overall it was a great experience and my household loved it that I can see us coming back again for next holiday season whether that may be jul 4, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Shout out to this location for its customer service!

The line at 6am is way too long to not find out about these breakfast tacos. The line moves slow so plan for extra time to not be late for work. Get the chorizo and thank me later!

Lunch was hot and delicious today, we shared a half chicken, side salad, and creamed corn. The girls enjoyed every bite, there was nothing to take home. The service was great and very fast.

It's been a while since we've had a Sunday family dinner at Pappas Bar-B-Q, but a recent visit was just as good as it was in the past. Finger lickin' bar-b-q scratch made daily. Their brisket slowly smoked over mesquite and hickory is a family favorite. Order by the 1/2, 3/4 or pound. Add bar-b-q sauce and classic sides. Cole slaw. Potato salad. Ranch beans. Sweet yams. A basket of fries. Grab a Texas sized baked potato. Served with chopped brisket, turkey or chicken with butter, cheese, sour cream and chives, it is so delicious. Drizzle some bar-b-q sauce on top for a true taste of Texas. I usually get a special chef salad with sliced turkey and honey mustard dressing. Ask for extra olives and add a little bar-b-q sauce, because...why not? It's so good!! Thirsty? The watermelon or cantaloupe agua frescas are so refreshing. A perfect compliment to a Texas bar-b-q meal. Cute rustic dining room with plenty of seating. The condiment bar with pickles, peppers, and more bar-b-q sauce is great. Lots of parking available, too. A nice place to bring family or friends to enjoy a taste of Texas.

Great location! And the cowboy hat on top of the building is a great added touch to truly feel like you are in Texas ! I also love the old fashion saloon design inside of the restaurant! The food is also very delicious the beef is sometimes not as hot as it needs to be but the large Texas style fries are always hot fresh and crispy! The customer service is also amazing the staff is so friendly and even the managers take the time to give out recommendations of what to order!

Beef Sausage Sandwich with fries and a side of coleslaw.
Candy C.

Came on a weekday evening. Not crowded... was able to sit where we wanted. Service is friendly and depending what you order it can be slow. I ordered the beef sausage sandwich (tasty with good snap, the bread was toasted to perfection) with fries (crisp on the outside and soft on the inside) and coleslaw (crisp and creamy). There are bottles of sauce if you like your BBQ saucy. There is a bar with pickles, onions, jalapeños and carrots. Definitely a family place, is a casual atmosphere.

See the bread at the bottom that shouldn't be there....

After the three-taco dinner, I honestly struggled to reconcile what was on my tray with its Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition. The biggest problem was the one thing a barbecue restaurant needs to get right: the meat. It arrived cold and lacked flavor. The tacos fell apart as I ate them, and nothing about the taste made up for that. I've had considerably better tacos from food trucks. At a place with this reputation, I expected much more. The sides didn't rescue the meal. The cornbread was dry, the mac and cheese was mediocre, and the atmosphere felt lifeless during our visit. The meat should have been the star of the show; instead, it was the biggest letdown. The staff, however, were wonderful--warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. They deserve credit, and the service was easily the best part of the experience. This wasn't an inedible meal. It was an underwhelming one from a restaurant I used to enthusiastically recommend. Two stars reflects this visit, and I hope the kitchen gets back to the standard that made me love this place.

If you arrive early, be sure to grab a number from the binder on the water cooler table near the front door. The staff also walks around offering drinks while you wait, which was a nice touch. Around 10:45 AM, everyone lines up according to their number. We were #24, and it took us almost 40 minutes to reach the front and place our order. We ordered: -1 lb moist brisket -1/2 lb garlic sausage link -1.5 lbs prime beef rib (feeds 2-3 people) -CS tacos with pulled pork (comes with 2 tacos) For sides, we got the coleslaw, potato salad, mac & cheese, cobbler, and smoked beans. I really liked the smoked beans and cobbler! Everything was absolutely delicious and worth the wait. All of the meats were flavorful, juicy, and tender. The CS tacos were good, and I highly recommend getting the pulled pork to go with them. The prime beef rib was the standout for me. They only offer it on Saturdays, so definitely get it if you're there. The staff was friendly and attentive. Despite being busy, they checked on us frequently and even helped clear our table multiple times. Thanks to the incredible service, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere, I had a great start to my weekend!

The food here was the real deal and they should be proud of having earned a Michelin Star, as well as being one of the top American-style BBQ restaurants in the world (only 4 hold a Michelin Star). The people that work here are also friendly and helpful, honestly such a chill vibe, which helps you get into the right mood for some bbq. What surprised me was that I ordered the Stuffed Potato Salad on a whim and it was out of this world! Warm potato salad (taste way better than it sounds) covered in chopped briskets, queso, ranch salsa, and green onions was so comforting and so delicious, I was crying! I also ordered a 1/2 of brisket and even though I had to take it home to finish work, it remained so tender and moist even after the drive home. The crust/bark was also so flavorful without being too much and I'm glad it wasn't just a hard layer of black pepper that was hard to crunch through. I'm also not really a coleslaw type of person, but their sweet & spicy coleslaw was the best I've ever had. I wolfed that down and would definitely get it again! We all need more fiber in our diet anyway and thankfully this is a painless way to do it (unless you can't handle the touch of spice I suppose). I'd really like to come back on a Saturday morning sometime with another sucker to accompany me, because an hour drive plus an hour or two wait on line is quite a big commitment. But the beef ribs are definitely on my radar and I probably will want to try their turkey, cobbler, and mac & cheese sometime. I'm also happy to say that even though I came late on a Thursday near closing and a lot of things were sold out, they still had brisket and that's my favorite cut of meat. I'll definitely have to swing by next time I have errands around here.

I also love that they tend to carry items that are a little more boutique and local which makes it fun to browse. A lot of people visit for the barbecue. If I recall, when they first were serving BBQ it was a smaller, more limited time and they've since extended those hours. When visiting there is plenty of street parking in the area. They have expanded the seating inside since when they first opened which is nice for those not looking to takeaway food. Food & Drink - 4.25* The counter for ordering is in the back. I definitely recommend getting an assortment or a plate. Sausage and brisket are both solid. The sides are good too. I did notice the quality maybe dipped a little as the hours expanded, but it's still a very good option to some of the nearby establishments down the road or over in the North Main area that tend to have giant queues. When I was working downtown we'd swing over here quickly for a lunch. Feel free to grab anything to drink from the coolers as well if it catches your interest. Service - 5* Solid. You can ask to see the piece of rib before they cut it for you and they will happily oblige (patrons behind you might not be so thrilled with that move, but they'll live). Sides were excellent as were the mashed potatoes with white gravy on the side, green beans that were just tender enough, but also a bit crunchy. Perfect. They were seasoned with pork, so if that's not your thing, you might want to skip it. We also ordered their shareable onion rings, easily enough for three people that were huge, hot, and crispy. Let's get this out of the way, some of their prices are a little up there, but if you're anything like me, and don't frequent BBQ places often, it's a rare but enjoyable treat. Sometimes you have to splurge and live a little. Also, they have their regular sauce on tables, but you now have to ask the cashier for their sublime coffee BBQ sauce. Don't be shy, ask. It's worth it. Oh, pro tip: If you want beef ribs, the 'plate' is actually cheaper and a better deal than 'by the pound', so save a little money and get two sides.

I arrived around 5:35 PM, about 25 minutes before closing, and ordered 1/2 lb of brisket and 1/2 lb of ribs. The brisket was $17, and unfortunately it was extremely greasy and so overcooked that the meat had become mushy. It still had good flavor, but the texture was nothing like the brisket I've normally gotten here. Judging by what I received, it felt like I may have gotten what was left at the end of the day. The ribs were $12, and my "1/2 lb" consisted of two individual ribs. They tasted good, but they weren't nearly as tender as I've had here before. I paid about $29 just for the meat, and for that price I expected much better quality and portioning. I understand that I came close to closing time, but I still paid full price and should receive the same quality of food as any other customer. If the brisket is past its best or there isn't enough left to make a proper order, I'd rather be told that so I can order something else. I'm not writing the place off because they've been good to me many times before. But this particular order was definitely not up to their usual standard, and the pictures speak for themselves.
