Ehhh....this BBQ was just okay. I'm a huge brisket fan and this missed the mark. Something about the taste just didn't do it for me. There are specials and deals. Everything is presented on a digital menu above the line or written within eyesight The line went relatively quickly. The staff were friendly and efficient. And the meal was delicious. This was some of the best brisket and turkey I've ever had at a BBQ place. The line builds pretty quick but I have had killers on my bucket list to try for a while. While visiting here for work I was told to give this place a try because the BBQ was great. I've tried it twice now. You walk through the front door and look at the menus on the monitors. Then you proceed forward to order your food. The servers and staff behind the counter are friendly and patient. The first time I went I got to be 2 meat plate with two veggies. I chose the brisket and pork ribs for my meat and the greens and cheddar broccoli rice. The second time I got the baked potato, fully loaded, with brisket. Both meals were delicious! I tried the Mac & Cheese and Brussels sprouts. I preferred the sprouts over the Mac as it didn't taste homemade. Tastes more like velveeta cheese whiz and needs some real cheddar to balance. I came here with my toastmasters friends after a contest at the library. It's customary to eat after meetings. Someone suggested bbq. So, here we are. I couldn't believe I had never been to Killen's Barbecue before. It's one of the Texas famous bbq restaurants. The gps sent me to the street corner past the parking lot entrance. I had no choice but park behind the restaurant. I assume they share with the church. We got there like an hour before closing. They sold out of briskets, chicken, pulled pork and something else. I normally don't go out of my way to eat bbq. So, first thing I thought was I'll just order side dishes. I went to the counter inquire about nachos which normally brisket nachos. What could it be without brisket. He said, "we have brisket". Huh? But sign said you ran out. "Ok, I changed my mind. I'll get brisket tacos, instead." I also ordered a side of Brussels sprouts. The food was good. But tacos were just chopped brisket on a piece on tortilla, 3 of them. With pico de gallo and mildest salsa verde on the side. I had to drizzle Tabasco sauce to season them. We were not rushed out after the restaurant closed and they kept the music playing except turned off the air conditioning. I am writing to report a very disappointing experience during my recent visit. My wife and I have been loyal customers for over 10 years and have never had an issue before. However, during our visit in April at around 2:20 PM, the cashier we interacted with was extremely rude from the very beginning of our transaction. When we paid, she had a poor attitude, and when we asked for BBQ sauce, she was again unhelpful and dismissive. Later, when I politely asked for a to-go box, she seemed unwilling to assist and continued to display a negative attitude. Her behavior escalated to the point where she was staring at us in a way that felt intimidating, which made both my wife and me very uncomfortable. This level of service is unacceptable and not what we have come to expect after supporting your business for so many years. The employee was an older Hispanic woman with black curly hair, which should help identify who was working at that time. The turkey was pretty good,wasn't dry, collard were okay, pulled pork would have been better but I had a large chunk of it which had less sauce for the meat inside. I tried a small amount of the pork ribs my friend got and they were decent, not much sauce. The included pickles and pickled onions were okay and I would have liked 2 pieces of bread. We were in Houston for the weekend for the Bears game. We came on a Saturday and arrived before they opened. Pretty much the first ones there and I was really surprised that nobody else was here. My wife and I both ordered a two meat plate each. We both ordered ribs and brisket. She ordered hers with lean meat and I ordered mine moist. Which is essentially the fattest part with less meat. It's also the best tasting part of the brisket Id you ask me. Sometimes if you get lean only, it gets too dry and then you might think that's it's bad bbq. I was initially going to order a Beef Rib plate but I was told they didn't have any. About a half hour later the table next to us had beef rib on their plate. If they had said they weren't ready yet( I probably would have just waited, but instead they said they didn't have any so I ordered something else. This kind of upset me a little bit. As for what we ordered it wall all delicious. Although you only get one rib with the combo. At the end of the day a two meat plate with sides is definitely a lot of food and very filling, but what the hell am I supposed to do with one rib? Come on now. Especially when it's one the best damn tasting ribs I have ever had. It had a beautiful smoked ring and the rub used was so damn delicious. The brisket was also very delicious. It had the same beautiful smoked ring and was really tender and juicy. We ordered creamed corn, potato salad, bbq beans and Mac & cheese as our sides. Would definitely order these again. One thing that sucked here, was their bbq sauces. Stay way. To be honest, you shouldn't need it. The meat by itself is all you will need. The brisket here is the benchmark and far better than other local favorites in downtown like Pit Room, Pinkertons,, Truth, etc. Order a mix of lean and fatty brisket, and try their other favorites like their excellent large beef rib, pork ribs, and sausages.
