Mom took me to Old Hickory Inn BBQ during our Houston trip, and while I can't officially confirm whether dogs are allowed, I can confirm one very important thing: The barbecue was excellent. I stayed tucked away in my carrier the entire visit while Mom ordered at the counter. This is a casual spot where you order first and then either take your food to go or grab a table. We ordered takeout but stayed long enough to enjoy our meal inside. Mom got the pork ribs and brisket, plus a baked potato, mashed potatoes, beans, and fried okra. Everything smelled amazing. Naturally, I volunteered to help with quality control and was rewarded with a few samples of the meat. The brisket was particularly noteworthy. The restaurant doesn't have outdoor seating, so I would recommend calling ahead if you're traveling with a dog and want to verify their pet policy. Everyone was friendly during our visit, but I don't want to accidentally get another pup in trouble. If you're looking for delicious Texas barbecue in Houston, this place is definitely worth a stop. I've been going to Old Hickory Inn since late 80's and in the last 5 or so years the quality just hasn't been the same, last few times I've gotten food, I noticed the cheese just isn't the same it looks melted but it all sticks together kinda rubbery and doesn't taste right. Then there's the pickles to me Texas bbq goes with sour pickles which old hickory inn no longer serves instead the pickles are white which I guess are kosher pickles, also the jalapeños are not the same, they're crunchy and hard. I don't put bbq sauce on my food but my husband also said that has changed. Not sure where all the changes came from but every time I go back I hope I'm going to get the same great food they used to serve 10-15 years ago . Friendly staff and a nice clean place. You order cafeteria style and they bring to you. I had brisket dinner and it came w 2 sides. Was pretty decent. Was able to order the moist brisket which is a bit more fatty. Can get garlic bread or white bread. Potato salad was very good onion rings were good. Wish there had been a few more onion rings. Sauce was a bit different than other places may try separately it is served on the side. The staff was pleasant and efficient. read more

Another one bites the dust. A family favorite for decades I went to the new location for the first time for a two meat plate. I asked for fatty brisket and got dry ass shoe leather, the vinegar based Cole slaw was just a tasteless pile of green slush, the potato salad was a jar of mayonnaise with some cubed potatoes dropped in it, and the ribs were overcooked and dry. New owner, new cook, or new attitude I don't know but my first meal there was in June of 1977 and my last meal was yesterday as everything was nasty and I threw it all out and got myself something to eat somewhere else. read more

We came on a Sunday night, at 8:10 PM, on July 19, 2026. I had not realized that they closed at 8:30 PM. The staff was nice and friendly and said that we can order and dine in and stay past closing time I also work in the food industry, so I know how sometimes this can be inconvenient. After we ordered and sat down, there were several other customers that came up after us. They all stayed to eat. The barbecue brisket sandwich, fries, and mashed potatoes are delicious. went to new location, heard good things but hadn't been there before. Just got brisket to go. I was very surprised by the absolute absence of any flavor not even on the bark. NO salt, no pepper. And the brisket was very dry. I asked for half moist and if they gave it to me you couldn't tell the difference between lean and moist. read more

I used to go to Hickory Inn a while ago, and he used to be alright for a local neighborhood bbq place. I went today and got a three meat plate (brisket, spicy sausage, and ribs) the food was so dry. It was not good. Service is still pretty good and the ambience is still pretty good, but the food quality has gone completely to the ground. The brisket is so dry you need to take a drink every time you take a bite. It makes me sad because this is the only barbecue place that I go to and I don't eat barbecue that often. read more

Okay; so after a bad experience at the Old Hickory Inn Barbecue on Hillcroft; I thought maybe they were having a bad day that day so I thought I would try them one more time! Well that was a disaster too! The people were down right rude!!! I tried to speak to them and be as nice as I could be. but they looked at me like a cow with a new gate. I don't know if there is a language barrier between staff or not! I have worked in the public eye for over 50 yrs and this is not the way to treat the people who are paying your salary! I ordered the sliced beef sandwich this time and I regretted it after one bite! It was fatty and tuff; infact I had to throw away half of it because it was so tuff and had no taste but the sauce I put on it! So for $12.00 I received a sandwich with meat that was so tuff and full of fat! I couldn't eat but half of it! Will I be back again to this establishment; never again; I gave them several chances to redeem themselves! This staff needs to be retrained to learn how to treat your customers! Old Hickory Inn BBQ is a restaurant that knows the art of barbecuing from their smoked briskets, chicken, sausages to the simple sides that are served. I ate a simple chopped beef sandwich with sauce to go intent on taking it home for later that day. I did not make it out the parking lot before I devoured the sandwich. It started as just a small bite, then just one more bite and you know how that story ended. A little known fact is Old Hickory Inn BBQ also can smoke your meats for you for at a nominal price. I had an event which required 50 lbs of smoked chicken leg quarters. I called prior, but dropped off the chicken (in its original sealed packaging) and two days later I was picking up piping hot, fall of the bone smoked chicken. 2nd time here - the 1st we had a better experience, the ribs feel off the bone and the okra was hot and crispy. So this time I ordered the family 1 from the online menu. 2 lbs of baby back ribs and 1 lb of ham, with 2 quarts of okra and 1 quart of corn. The ribs are getting a 1 star...very tough/dry and nothing like the 1st order. Almost like we got chopped ends, a lot of the rubbery membrane...not so much of the just bone and meat.... Priced like a top tier bbq place like truth or pit room, but worse than chain places like Pappas. The brisket was dry, the "moist" was inedible, the sides seemed like they were right out of a can. This is a perfectly adequate small place in our neighborhood. The brisket and ribs are reasonably satisfying - a bit smoky - and the sides are standard for an old-style barbecue place. The sauce is really necessary for the brisket. This is the kind of barbecue place I remember from before the bbq game really changed in Houston. So I have been here a few times and they have always been good. Today, they were off their game. The BBQ beans were hot but crusty. It tasted like they did not know if they were making chili or baked beans and decided to do a mix. The pulled pork was very dry. The sausage was off and not crispy. The chicken fried steak was good enough, but was premade, frozen- like the kind you would get a school lunch. Not worth the price, in my opinion. The kids chicken strips were good. The corn was great. The pickles tasted old and stale. The people are always friendly and today was the same. I'm not going to score them harshly based on the food today, but if I am honest, had this been my first time, there probably would not have been a second. The peach cobbler was excellent. The restaurant was clean and the bathrooms were clean and well stocked. They are kid friendly and they have a nice sized dining area. I wish the chicken fried steak was better. I have been looking for a good chicken fried steak in Houston and can still say that I have not found one. Haven't been here in a long time due to moving across town. Was in area and popped in and was very pleased at, well, everything! The restaurant is clean and maintained, everyone was friendly and the portion sizes are huge. I grabbed a brisket potato and was shocked at how large it is. Definitely matches the price tag, which is aligned with most bbq places, some of which give you less food for these prices. I'll definitely be stopping in anytime I'm over here! read more

Review #45 This barbecue joint has been around for a lifetime. It has survived several floods and keeps on trucking. It's convenient to where I live however it would not be a first choice. I head here maybe once every couple years out of convenience. Meet is typically dry ... as in all meat, brisket, chicken, ribs. Their sides are decent. I do like their barbeque sauce. Prices are comparable to any barbecue place. Clean facility and nicely renovated after each flood. It's a decent stop if you're in the area, but not worth heading here if you aren't close. read more

We ordered online, the family packs are not on the menu when ordering this way. We paid for meat by the pound instead and sides separately, in total 3.5lbs of meat and 2 pints of sides. There was no bbq sauce included and 2 pieces of toast was all we received. On top of all that disappointment we have been sick with upset stomachs the rest of the day.
