I used to go to Hickory Inn a while ago, and he used to be alright for a local neighborhood bbq place. I went today and got a three meat plate (brisket, spicy sausage, and ribs) the food was so dry. It was not good. Service is still pretty good and the ambience is still pretty good, but the food quality has gone completely to the ground. The brisket is so dry you need to take a drink every time you take a bite. It makes me sad because this is the only barbecue place that I go to and I don't eat barbecue that often.

BBQ is sacred in Texas and can start arguments so I do not take this review lightly. Old Hickory Inn BBQ is a restaurant that knows the art of barbecuing from their smoked briskets, chicken, sausages to the simple sides that are served. I ate a simple chopped beef sandwich with sauce to go intent on taking it home for later that day. I did not make it out the parking lot before I devoured the sandwich. It started as just a small bite, then just one more bite and you know how that story ended. A little known fact is Old Hickory Inn BBQ also can smoke your meats for you for at a nominal price. I had an event which required 50 lbs of smoked chicken leg quarters. I called prior, but dropped off the chicken (in its original sealed packaging) and two days later I was picking up piping hot, fall of the bone smoked chicken. Great service and will definitely add to my bookmarks.

    Pork Ribs n ham

2nd time here - the 1st we had a better experience, the ribs feel off the bone and the okra was hot and crispy. So this time I ordered the family 1 from the online menu. 2 lbs of baby back ribs and 1 lb of ham, with 2 quarts of okra and 1 quart of corn. The ribs are getting a 1 star...very tough/dry and nothing like the 1st order. Almost like we got chopped ends, a lot of the rubbery membrane...not so much of the just bone and meat.... The ham and sides got a 5, therefore I'll give it a 2 star overall... Not sure I'll give em another try or not...$100 yeesh....

Dry brisket with inedible "moist" portions

Priced like a top tier bbq place like truth or pit room, but worse than chain places like Pappas. The brisket was dry, the "moist" was inedible, the sides seemed like they were right out of a can. The staff were nice and the smoked turkey was ok, so it's 2 star not 1, but there are MUCH better places at this price point and even below it. The ambiance is lacking too.

My wife picked up some good Q' since she was right next door. A half pound each of brisket and pork ribs hit the spot. The fried okra is close to a necessity for me when I'm eating BBQ and they do it well. Nice little spot near the neighborhood.

Sausage and pulled pork. I don't think they got my order right, but maybe this is their pulled pork.

So I have been here a few times and they have always been good. Today, they were off their game. The BBQ beans were hot but crusty. It tasted like they did not know if they were making chili or baked beans and decided to do a mix. The pulled pork was very dry. The sausage was off and not crispy. The chicken fried steak was good enough, but was premade, frozen- like the kind you would get a school lunch. Not worth the price, in my opinion. The kids chicken strips were good. The corn was great. The pickles tasted old and stale. The people are always friendly and today was the same. I'm not going to score them harshly based on the food today, but if I am honest, had this been my first time, there probably would not have been a second. The peach cobbler was excellent. The restaurant was clean and the bathrooms were clean and well stocked. They are kid friendly and they have a nice sized dining area. I wish the chicken fried steak was better. I have been looking for a good chicken fried steak in Houston and can still say that I have not found one. I hope today was just a "one off" because my past experiences here have all been much better.

Brisket baker potato, hand for scale. Delicious and massive!

Haven't been here in a long time due to moving across town. Was in area and popped in and was very pleased at, well, everything! The restaurant is clean and maintained, everyone was friendly and the portion sizes are huge. I grabbed a brisket potato and was shocked at how large it is. Definitely matches the price tag, which is aligned with most bbq places, some of which give you less food for these prices. I'll definitely be stopping in anytime I'm over here!

$32.79 for sliced brisket and 1/4lb of sausage.

I'm guessing the old Hickory is going down soon. They even charged .80cents for two slices of bread.

This was the best meal I had my entire weekend! The place had ample parking. There was a solid staff cleaning, and the place was spotless. The front desk staff was helpful and patient with newbies, recommending menu items and accompaniments from the bar nearby. I had the chorizo breakfast taco and the pulled pork hash taco - I was delighted to find out that "hash" meant a delicious hash brown inside the taco. The egg was creamy and perfect inside a taco, the cheese was good, the meat was amazing. I don't think it's possible for me to be happier with roughly $9 in breakfast food. I will make it a point, even if it's not on my way, to visit Pit Room every time I'm in the Houston area going forward. It is a destination restaurant, in my opinion!

My wife and I had had a great experience at the Pit Room previously, so brought the rest of my family here to experience. I found the food to continue to be really good, especially the fatty brisket. Stopped by around 11 am, and there was still parking in the dedicated surface lot next to the building. The smell of bbq wasn't as prevalent as last time. Once walking in, you stand in line to first order your meat...which is immediately sliced in front of you. You then move further along to ask for your sides, including as many slices of plain white bread as you want. My daughter treated us this time, so didn't record prices, but thought it was reasonable. I liked the sliced brisket a lot, along with the side of elote corn and mac n cheese. The free toppings bar had the various pickled vegetables that really cut through the fattiness of the meat. Drinks were all self serve, with a water station and soda fountain. Probably ordered a bit less than expected for 4 people, but was happy that there were no left overs, and left not completely stuffed, since we had a long day ahead of us. By the time we left a little after noon, there was both a wait for tables and parking. We had come at the right time.

The brisket on the other hand was a little dry and I wish it had more flavor, but the sauce made up for it. We also got the Mac n cheese with brisket on top. They really did not skimp out on the brisket. It was very delicious and the Mac n cheese was perfectly creamy and decadent. They also pickles, pickled jalapeño, and onions on the side which really cut the fat from the meat. The coleslaw that we got was okay though. Overall, it was a great experience. I've tried those deemed "the best," including Salt Lick in Driftwood and Killen's. So how did CorkScrew measure up? In addition to the beef rib, we tried the moist brisket, pulled pork, and sausage. We also tried several sides, including those recommended in the Michelin review: potato salad, mac and cheese, smokey beans, and coleslaw, and I picked up a peach cobbler, as well. The beef rib: STELLAR. This was outstanding with its flavorful bark and an impossibly tender texture that truly melts in your mouth, unlike any other beef rib I've ever had. Easily the very best beef rib, without a doubt. The brisket was delicious, as well: tender and flavorful. The sausage was nothing special... on par with sausage elsewhere, as was the pork. As for the sides, I've never been a fan of beans, but since the Michelin review specifically mentioned them, I gave them a try. I'm a fan! I would definitely order these again. Their smokiness is gently tamed by a touch of sweetness. The rest? Very average. The mac and cheese tasted like the stuff I had in my elementary school cafeteria - very un-special. The potato salad was salty and was missing any semblance of potato chunks. The texture was oddly like lumpy mashed potatoes. But the other surprise for me: the cobbler. This was simply and divinely perfect with crisp, sweet buttery crumble. A wonderful way to end a hearty meal. I'm so glad I ordered our food online for pickup. When I arrived at 1pm, the line was wrapped around the building. Pickup was very easy: I texted them when I arrived, and they replied when they were ready for me to go in and retrieve it. But even if there wasn't a line, I would never eat there: the restaurant is too divey for me: very rustic, picnic-like feel both inside and out, and it was uncomfortably warm and humid (again, inside and out.) The staff was very friendly and cheerful. Glad i tried it, and when i get a hankering for a good beef rib, this is definitely where I'll be getting it!

My partner had the brisket sandwich with potato salad and a small helping of pickles and pickled red onions and I had the pulled pork tacos. My partner said the brisket sandwich was okay, but we both agreed that the potato salad was fantastic! The potato salad was way better than the one at Pappas Barbecue. The taste of the pulled pork tacos was great, but it was honestly too wet and made the flour tortillas too soggy and there was way too much coleslaw on top. I feel like if Killen's is going to serve pulled pork tacos there needs to be three things done. 1. Serve the tacos with an option of corn tortillas because I feel corn tortillas would've worked better to give a great contrast/pairing with the sweetness of the pulled pork and sauce. 2. Serve the corn/flour tortillas on the side so that they don't get soggy and wet. 3. There are some things that just don't belong on a taco of any kind and that's coleslaw. My partner and I also tasted the banana pudding and to say it was divine is an understatement. What I really like about this pudding was that you could taste real bananas in this pudding and it had been mixed well all together. Our total was $80 after tipping, which is a little pricey for some of the items, but honestly I would definitely come back to Killen's Barbecue when I was in the mood for barbecue.
