Consider this an introduction to Moroccan flavors whether you're into sandwiches, bowls, or salads, in a fast casual concept. The service is friendly and efficient, as you can build your own meal or choose from one of their featured items. The menu is quite simple with a handful of different protein options like beef, lamb, chicken, or shrimp plus a base of either saffron rice, quinoa brown rice, couscous, greens, or fatima bread (Moroccan pita). After some experimenting, I found that the flavor really depends on what sauce(s) you choose...it can make it or break it. While the meats are decently seasoned and have good flavor, the sauces play a big role in how it tastes overall. The red harissa is my go-to...spicy enough to leave your tongue with a bit of a tingle, and mixed with some garlic aioli. There are many other choices though, including harissa aiolii, tomato chermoula, mint avo yogurt, cilantro lime vinaigrette, lemon olive oil, mango vinaigrette, or Zoa green. Quite tasty with tons of toppings that go well with the whole shebang. I also enjoy the fatima bread due to its soft interior and sturdy exterior, a good job holding all the filling together. However, I do think that the meats particularly the kefta (beef meatball) and the chicken were particularly salty, and the beef tagine with cinnamon carrots are more than moderately sweet (though I think honey, dates, and cinnamon are actually common in this cuisine). read more

My friend has been wanting us to go to this place for a while now. I liked the idea of a healthier option for lunch. It has alot of locations, and good reviews. Moroccan food seems close to Mediterranean in many ways, which has been identified as the best diet for long term health. So I was interested. Service- was fine. When we arrived before 11am on a Saturday the place was empty. They did let us hang out a while before and after we ordered, so I appreciate them not kicking us out. There's a nice outdoor space, and some tables inside. The water station was behind the counter. We did not realize this until after we had eaten our meal, and had to ask for it later on. Which they obliged. It would have been nice had it already been out on the floor, for us to self serve ourselves. But every place is different I suppose. Food- I got the Tangier bowl for $14.95 with the greens instead of rice. It comes with shrimp as protein. The went a little skimpy with the add on's, from my perspective. I am not sure the price matched the amount of food I got for a bowl. It didn't feel like a meal, more like a snack. Would I come back? The first time I tried Zoa was a couple years ago at a halal food festival. I finally came to their physical location. I created my own bowl with Saffron rice as my base with Lamb meat and lentils as my proteins. You can add as much toppings as you like. I chose the red cabbage, golden cauliflower and feta cheese. Finished off with the Zesty Mint Avocado Yogurt sauce. I took a pretty picture for y'all and mixed everything all together. This now is hitting! So yummy! Finally tried after 3 years of wondering. Boy have I missed out! I should've known when my friend told me she gets her meal prep from here. The place isn't too big so finding parking can be a headache but the food is 10x worth it. So delicious and better for you options. It's like cava with more spice! I didn't know Zoa was a chain until I read some other reviews. A friend at the gym told me how much she liked this place, so naturally, I had to check it out. The setup is a bit like "Moroccan Chipotle" and I am totally here for it. The service was fast and they gave me a sample of their jasmine tea before I left. (Side note: I now get this tea every time I go because of how yummy it is. Outside of it being a touch too sweet, the flavor is to die for). Some notable mentions: The cabbage/pickled onion topping? I could probably eat this for every meal and be content. I struggle with eating chicken, but I love the flavor here. It looks like they cook it in a dutch oven, so maybe I need to start doing that. There is essentially an eggplant hummus called "Zouka" that I am loving. The only thing that I think could change is the saffron rice. I'm not sure what it is but sometimes it's a little hard and I almost wish instead of regular white-grain rice there was a different style used- like a jasmine or basmati. I've known about the Zoa Moroccan Kitchen local chain for quite some time, but finally decided to try this establishment recently. I ordered the Rabat bowl, which is vegetarian and probably named after Rabat, the capital of Morocco. I ordered rice as the base, which is a good base. While the dish tasted good, I thought the presentation was off. Everything seemed smashed together. The dish would have benefited from highlighting separate components, some greenery and less harissa aioli, which was not spicy as advertised. It seemed like the hummus and zaalouk, which tends to be redder when made more authentically, were layered on top of each other. The cucumber tomato mix didn't really add anything, but I appreciated it nonetheless. It would be nice if Zoa served this with a green chermoula. I could be mistaken, but what Zoa refers to as Fatima bread looks just like Khobz, a Moroccan bread. I thought the Moroccan mint tea was excellent, but I have seen real mint leaves in Zoa's mint tea before, so I'm guessing that's probably not a consistent ingredient for the tea. The service here was top notch and the guy at the counter was very helpful, answering questions. Overall, I would rate this location a solid 4/5. I look forward to trying other dishes at Zoa in the future. read more

Ordering I ordered ahead online. I love a good "online ordering" option. Parking Parking was super easy I pulled up right in front of the door. Order Pickup The pre-orders are kept on a metal rack that's to the left of the register. Service/dog friendly The employee there was a very kind and welcoming young lady who told me they allow dogs on their patio when I asked. Great news for me since my dog was in the car and I was ready to eat onsite. Outdoor dining Their patio is nice, covered, has a fan (maybe it had two?) and looks out across Rice Ave. Food Now here's where the stars dropped. I created my own bowl. As I ordered I wavered between ordering the beef tangine and the chicken charmoula. Well I ended up getting the beef. I definitely should've got the chicken. The beef was $1 more and it was WAY too sweet. I didn't taste any other flavor but sweetness/sugar. I'm not a big fan of my savory food tasting sweet and as I ate it I quickly regretted ignoring the terms "cinnamon carrots" and "honey pepper" that were part of the beef tangine's description. I also have a slight sensitivity to sugar so the beef gave me a slight headache from eating it. I couldn't even eat it all so I left still feeling a bit hungry and dissatisfied. Oh and I also got white beans, beets, feta and cauliflower in my bowl, over greens. Where I went wrong/in summary I should probably give this restaurant 4 stars instead of 3. To be totally honest if there was a separate category, I'd probably give the beef tangine 1.5 or 2 stars. I did not like it but it's really not the restaurant's fault I mucked up my bowl. Probably shouldn't have ordered online from a place I hadn't eaten at before, particularly one that serves the food up cafeteria style and where they probably would've let me taste things before ordering. Anyway, from looking at others' reviews there are people who actually do like the tangine. But yeah, not me. I'd return to Zoa but would make sure to get the chicken charmoula next time. We are not familiar with Moroccan food, so had trouble picking a meat. A lot of the dishes were stew based. Overall we enjoyed everything we ordered- made things easy and ordered the preset combo bowls. Marrakesh (beef tagine): Moroccan beef stew, sweet and savory Fez (chicken chermoula): I had googled chicken chermoula and it pulled up as roasted chicken in a Moroccan pesto sauce. This was not that, more of a stew dish and still very tasty. Tangier (shrimp): I ordered the shrimp. It was a-okay, tasted like a tomato-based shrimp dish, couldn't tell what made it Moroccan. Casablanca (lamb meshwi): my friend liked his bowl. Although we couldn't discern all of the components of the dish, I think he liked the taktouka- from Google "Moroccan savory dish and spread made from tomatoes, bell peppers, garlic, toasted paprika and olive oil." Kenitra (beef kefta/meatballs): my husband enjoyed it. It was covered in a tomato sauce. We ordered sauce on the side because he prefers less spicy. After Morocco's surprise victory in the 2022 World Cup soccer, I just checked the food. I found ZOA on Yelp. It was located between Chase bank and HEB at the corner of Bellair and Rice.  I had no idea about the food. I just picked up the menu. Just like Panda Express, I asked the server to give me what I wanted. I got a little sandwich.  $10 was a bit higher than Panda Express. It was okay. Much better than Pita wrap at JackInthebox. Sooooo flavorful! Soooo colorful! Soooo good! If you're not familiar with Moroccan food, ZOA is a safe and delicious way to try something new. Or just plain yummy. Serving sandwiches and bowls, ZOA gives you tons of options in terms of their super flavorful proteins (kefta-- kebab vs. tangine-- like stewed version vs. sausage-- for beef, chicken, shrimp, lamb if you're a fan). And if you're in for the veggies, tons of colorful choices: Your bowl can explode from colors if you choose-- beets, red onion cabbage, carrots, cucumber tomato, hummus, grilled green peppers... and the list goes on. Saffron rice, quinoa, salad mix, lentils, beans are just some things you can choose as your base. Really loved all the colors, spices, and herbs-- cinnamon in my carrots but savory? Citrus and warm spices in my chicken? Oooh yeshhhhh~ loved the tender lamb, but not a fan of their shrimp (they're very mini sized, and somehow both hard and mushy at the same time... so there isn't really much of a bite). The sandwiches ($9) come in what I think is khobz (a Moroccan flatbread that looks similar to a round pita but with more substance, cornmeal-y, and less airy). Awesome, but eat that fresh, because all the sauce and juices soak into the bread, and no one likes a soggy sandwich! Upgrading to a bowl is $2 extra. They have their preset options, and you can also build your own bowl (base, 1 protein, 4 toppings, and 2 sauces). ZOA is a great option for group orders! Their ordering on Uber has some drawbacks-- you are required to choose 2 sauces for the Create-Your-Own options. You can't choose how much sauce (like light, regular, etc), and they don't come on the side. As first timers, we didn't know what these sauces tasted like, and they didn't come on the side so you're stuck with your bowl drenched in whatever you chose! Some are spicy, and they are very heavy handed in the sauce department, haha~ With all the sauces and pickled options, it's on the very salty side, but I'd pick a beautiful bowl from ZOA over Chipotle any day :D They've been around for at least 2 years, so why they don't have a bigger presence in Houston, I have no idea. The kefta bowl my wife got was 3 stars. We may not know how to order this to have it come out amazing. Moroccan meatballs, greens and sauces. I tried something she saw online, a yalla breakfast sandwich with Moroccan sausage and tomato sauce.....reminded me of a calzone, it rated 5 stars. I bought a bag of whole coffee beans, ground some and they were very good. This place is owned by the same guy that has coco crepes according to the coffee bag. I take a star off if there's no roast or use by date, none.....I'll give them another try and get the breakfast sammy with eggs. May try the cappuccino too. read more

I was going to Starbucks across the street when I noticed ZOA. Given that it was almost noon, I figured a real meal would likely be better than just getting a latte, and so I walked over. Having never been here, the server was super helpful in describing the different bases, meats, and toppings. I got a base of couscous, with lamb and steak. The steak is very sweet, so for those who don't like sweet-savory skip it! I definitely liked the lamb way better, but they were both very good. My toppings were relish, caramelized onions, chickpeas, carrots, and the eggplant and bell pepper toppings of which I can't remember the names. Everything was really good, and even as I got super full, I couldn't stop eating The ambiance is similar to a cafe, it's small inside, but very cute, and their patio area was just perfect on a cool sunny day like today. This was the third Zoa Moroccan Kitchen location that I have visited within Houston. They have locations all around the city and are rather convenient for visiting over lunch or dinner. So far with this location? Unimpressed and left much to be desired. This location is super skimpy with their portions and the price point is heavy. For two bowls, 1 bread and 1 green tea, you'll shell out about $30 and leave feeling a bit underwhelmed. Not sure why they are so skimpy with their portions and their service. Food was good, warm and flavorful, but I've had better at their other locations. This location is quite small and grab and go style as well. Parking is a bit small and limited and as mentioned, this location is smaller than the other ones that I have visited. With the food: The meats were tender and their toppings were decent. Unfortunately, I may never revisit ever again due to their lack of decent portions of their bowls and the overall presentation of their meals. I'm already hungry after writing this review and I was just visiting with their location not that long ago - LOL. Their super sweet Moroccan green tea is great, but honestly, I can make that at home (Atay Bi Nana). We don't have that many Moroccan food choices in Houston, I wish Zoa could do a bit better. I stopped by here today because it looked like a tasty bite that wouldn't break the budget. I was pleasantly surprised. The food is served cafeteria-style, so service is extremely fast. There are some great flavors in that bowl, and quite a few to choose from. This would be a great place for lunch if you need to get in and out quickly. The way it works is you choose a base (either a starch, greens or beans), add a protein (beef, lamb, chicken, shrimp or potato cake), add 4 toppings, and top it off with a sauce. And if it that seems too much, they have some pre-selected combinations to get you started. For instance, I picked brown rice with red quinoa, chose Beef Tagine, and topped it with lentils, shredded beets, cinnamon carrot and a pepper/tomato mix called tactouca, and topped it off with medium-hot green harissa. It's definitely a healthy bite that won't leave you feeling bloated. And there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options if you swing that way. This isn't in my usual neck of the woods, but if I'm back in this part of town, I'd definitely consider returning, because of the great flavors, health appeal and competitive price. read more

Zoa Moroccan Kitchen has to be one of the best fast-casual places I've ever eaten at. The first time I tried their food I got half way through the bowl and I wanted to know if I could buy a franchise location of it lol Their food is healthy, taste pretty close to homemade food, and the best part is that so far, I haven't had the issues I have at chipotle and Salata where someone is trying to skimp you in the food you're paying for. The amount of food you get for $10 is great and it's pretty filling as well. At the time of writing this, extra meat is $3 which is pretty reasonable as well. As long as they continue not to skimp on food especially when you pay for extra meat and they keep up their quality I think they'll do great. I love the Lamb and Chicken that they have for the meat options. The Beef Tajine is pretty good too but a little too sweet for my taste. I've had the meatballs and they're good too. I still need to try their Shrimp. Their Potato cakes taste amazing and I wish they had potatoes as an option for their base as well instead of rice, bread, couscous, etc. Their Eggplant, Roasted Turmeric Cauliflower, Cinnamon Carrots, Sweet potatoes, and Confit Onions are my favorite veggie dishes. For the sauces I always get Garlic Aioli. Some of the other sauces are a bit too spicy for me so try them out before putting it on your food. The Moroccan Mint Tea here is great and a nice addition to the end of your meal. The Melon juice is great too, I don't find that stuff in many other places. I highly recommend trying Zoa out. I have only gotten a bowl with Quinoa/Brown Rice as a base ( I'm pretty sure you can halves here like 1/2 quinoa and 1/2 arugula or similar). For the protein I have tried the Chicken which has a good spice as well as the Potato pancakes when I want to go full Veg. After that there are lots of delicious options to add. If you like different flavors and spices give Zoa a try, you should be pleasantly surprised. I don't normally add too many reviews on Yelp but want to make sure this place catches on so I can keep going.
