I had seen the Papermoon on one of the travel/food shows and wanted to check it out for a while, so decided to give it a shot for Easter rather than cook. If you've never been there before, you can't miss it.....it's like a technicolor explosion from a Dr. Seuss acid trip in the middle of brownstones and trees. With neon colored human statues atop painted cows, legs sticking up out of a bathtub filled with flowers, and a rocketship birdhouse in the tree, the decor starts way before you even walk in the doors. Once inside, it's either the coolest or the creepiest thing you've ever seen, depending on how you feel about antique toys and doll parts....there's even a post outside with the spindle made of severed doll heads. I thought it was cool, but my 19 yr old son thought it was creepy. What does he know?
We waited about 30 minutes to be seated, but it WAS Easter, and they don't accept reservations, so that didn't seem to be too unreasonable. Once inside, our drink orders were immediately taken and we started to review the rather extensive menu. One big plus: everything on the menu is served all day, so if you want pancakes at 4 in the afternoon, you can have them. It was around 1:30, but we both wanted French toast...I had the bananas foster french toast, and my son had the vanilla custard french toast. Both were amazing! The filling in the bananas foster is a cream cheese/cinnamon concoction that makes you feel like you've died and gone to heaven. I also ordered a side of grits, and was amazed at how good they were! They were the creamiest I've ever had outside of New Orleans, and with bits of red pepper, corn, and cheddar throughout, the flavor just explodes. My son also ordered the bacon milkshake (yes, you read that right), which I of course had to try.....and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, with a hint of maple adding the perfect touch.
Yes, the prices are a LITTLE steep, but not unreasonably so. The french toast dishes were about $10 each, which I wouldn't think was bad IF they came with any sides, but no.....all you get is the french toast. If you want bacon/sausage/ham, that's an extra $3.50, home fries are $4, and the sides go on from there. I would think that for $10 a plate, they could throw on a piece of bacon or two, but I think they know that people will still keep coming back regardless of the price just for the taste and the atmosphere. read more
