Pretty disappointed that I walked in well before closing and was told they stopped "taking names" for the night and we would have to go elsewhere. Solution: It would be appreciated if they would mention that they essentially closed earlier than their listed times... read more

I have a policy of trying a place three times, just to give them the benefit of a doubt; maybe I caught them on a bad day, who knows. But if I am getting the same vibe, I'll know definitely if I'm going to be a regular thereafter or not. Papa Perez isn't one of those places. First and foremost, every time I've gone, the staff have been very friendly. The food while certainly not the worst Mexican food I've ever had in B/CS area, is only so-so. The beans are tasteless and bland. The rice is equally as bland but at least somewhat moist. I only mention that because Mexican rice in restaurants is often dry and devoid of any flavor. If you are a fan of Mex food, then you know exactly what I mean. This past weekend I tried the Chili con Carne plate, and I couldn't eat it. Instead I nibbled at the beans and enjoyed the guacamole and chips. When the waitress asked me why I didn't like the food, I owned it immediately and told her it was my own fault for not reading the entree description thoroughly. You see, in my mind when I think of chili con carne, I think of cubed beef in a rich red gravy. Instead I was given a sort of extremely soupy ground beef dish, that was greasy and heavy in salt. The ground beef was even lacking as it was more sauce than beef... is that even possible? I tried three times, and each time this place couldn't come through. Thanks but no. read more

Of the two most popular Tex-Mex restaurants in downtown Bryan (Papa Perez and Casa Rodrigues), Papa Perez is my favorite. I've been coming here since they were in their original location across the street. The food here is delicious and they offer great family style options as well. So here's a story for you: Their Fiesta plates feed up to 4 people with several pounds of food. My roommate Junior year bet me and a friend that he could eat an entire fiesta family meal by himself. If he finished it all we would cover the $40 tab but if not, he would cover it. When they brought out the food, the other employees cheered and a crowd actually formed around the table. Needless to say he did not finish even half of it and he had abdominal "issues" several days after. Definitely one of the highlights of my Papa Perez experience. When you visit, try the Fried Stuffed Avocado with chicken and cheese, or the fajitas. Both are amazing! Plus, they have Big Red on tap! Always a good sign for a mexican restaurant in Texas! If you're a dessert person, try the Volcano. It resembles a 3rd grade science project and when they bring it out all the employees cheer. It's a mountain of brownies with ice cream in the center and a large sparkler firework on top. read more

Good chips and salsa. Fast service. Nice place. I ordered the veggie fajitas. I'm a little disappointed in the price. If you want to charge that much you need to pile on the veggies. Also if I'm not going to eat the cheese or sour cream you can spare a little more guac. I'll go back because it was good but come on guys. You can do better. read more

Some of the best chicken fajitas around the area. More than generous our the servings. We call in for curbside and have been very pleased with the lady that takes our phone order. Very pleasant and bubbly makes you feel like she's glad you picked their restaurant. read more

A very average Tex Mex joint. We stopped by while wandering around the vicinity. We had a tamale dinner and steak fajita tacos. The tamales tasted very inauthentic and the fajita tacos had a good flavor but the beef was more like pot roast. I was disappointed we chose this place to stop. Unfortunately at the time I had spotty reception and just walked in rather than checking review. The service wasn't great either but being the circumstances of Coronavirus I won't go into detail due to the fact I understand if there is nervousness etc..... I myself sat outside to avoid contact with people. read more

Great service super friendly. Shredded chicken is just that chicken only, no salsa or seasoning. Kind of disappointed. Good Patron Margs. read more

If you like zesty food - ASK FOR SOME GREEN SAUCE! I adored by visit to Papa Perez. The food was good, the green sauce (if you hadn't guessed) was amazing, and the service was friendly. I went during prime lunch time on a Friday, with a large group - and like a champ, also had a time deadline - so I knew I was taking a risk. However, it was a risk well worth taking, because our server was very quick to collect orders and bring out food (but not so quick like it seems rude or anything), and was also wonderful bringing us our checks and cashing us out. I was really pleased with my entire experience. Will definitely be back! read more

Papa Perez - Build your own quesadilla (all veggies) with charro beans and rice. - Mexican Near Me - Bryan, Texas

Food is good and tasty, the prices are great and reasonable. This is a nice option for starting First Friday.

Please DO NOT help this business out. They make every excuse not to stay open and are trying to close on a day over spring break when I just left there and it is packed. They even have a sign on their hostess stand stating not to expect the best service, or whatever, because of the work shortage. Seems to me like they are lazy bc if you read their FB posts too, they make every excuse to close early. Tonight they even said it when they have zero tables open. Cry me a River. Please go to a local business that WANTS customers. Go where your money is appreciated!!!! read more

Very good food and staff! You are greeted and really feel welcomed to come in!!! The food is awesome!! The salsa is great! Not to hot and very flavorful!! read more

Not good is an understatement. Shrimp ceviche was terrible. Had to add cilantro, onion, and jalapeños. Then they charged $0.70 for each one of those tiny cups! Service was spotty too. Queso is just melted velvita cheese. That's it. read more

We are from CA. With that being said we have been spoiled with fantastic Mexican food our whole lives. Since moving to TX we have been hard pressed to find anything close to resembling good mexican food. This place is the first good mexican we have found in a year of trying. From waco to austin to BCS. Hands down the best we have had here in TX. Don't waste your time anywhere else. Eat here every time. read more

A great atmosphere and very clean. Our server was THE BEST and super fast! Above average Tex-Mex and reasonable prices. However our food was served barely warm and almost cold. Needs to be served piping HOT, you can do better!!!! Will be back and this is a place you should try! read more

I normally refuse to make a negative comment about a restaurant in our area.. but I'm sorry to tell you that I will never again return to Papa Perez. The service was slow. No problem. The food was only ok. No problem. A young lady at our table ordered enchiladas with no sauce on them. The waiter brought them out with sauce on them. No problem. We sent them back.... HERE is where the problem started. The waiter came back and said that he "would have to pay for them, but we could get more for us".... WHAT??? The owner came out. He looked at our table and said that the enchiladas come with sauce "as shown on the menu". I have seen her order these often, including at this place. We told him that we ordered them without sauce.. he looked at the teenager in a way that made you KNOW thst he didn't believe her... Her mother looked at him and said firmly "she ordered them with no sauce".. he gave us a really dirty look and walked away. I have eaten there SO many times.. what the hell.. this is one of the worst things I have seen on the service side in a LONG time!! Wow.. you have lost your edge guys. Good freakin luck. read more

Maybe my taste buds are spoiled being that I'm from Houston and there's a decent Mexican restaurant in just about every corner.. Or maybe this place just isn't good! lol The restaurant was nice and clean and the building it occupies was right next door to where we were staying so decided to stop by after we checked out.. Looking over the menu, you'll glance at the typical Mexican fare with fajita, quesadillas, enchiladas and tacos.. The only problem when you order is that they forgot to add the seasoning... The food tasted bland and not authentic Mexican cuisine.. Papa Perez should've been called Grandpa Smith after tasting how bland this food was... I ordered the fried avocado with chicken and side order of rice and started with the shrimp ceviche.. The shrimp ceviche was minced shrimp with avocado on a bed of chopped lettuce in a martini glass...They probably just washed down the lettuce or maybe the shrimp because it tasted like water (yes I said water), it was flavorless.. Avocado is already pretty bland so you'll need to add a lot of seasoning (salt) to it to give it flavor and I think they didn't get that memo when stuffing it with the chicken because that too was bland!! I would never come back here to eat... The service was great and the restaurant was nice and they even have a nice little bar but I would never come back here if I was hungry.. I could've got better Mexican food at ANY taqueria in Houston... read more

The service at Papa Perez is five star quality alone. Friendly faces greeted us as my parents and I rolled in here in a post-wedding grog looking for hearty Tex-Mex to provide some much needed food fuel for the ride home. After hearing some town chatter about how delectable the fried, stuffed avocado we had to try this cherished town favorite. The space was surprisingly busy for such a sleepy small town, but as patrons and servers alike whizzed by, the hostesses weren't phased. We were seated immediately and served chips and their fiery, smoky delicious hot sauce soon after. After a quick discussion with our super sweet waitress and her genuine recommendations - it was settled: we ordered the fried avocado stuffed with chicken. What a treat! But almost just as wonderfully tasty was the tortilla soup and guacamole. Indeed, everything was fresh, hearty, and definitely hit the hangover spot. There was a separate area that served as the bar that actually seemed like fun area that could foster a festive time with beer, multiple large screen tv's, and sassy margaritas! read more

If you've ever had Taco Bell and considered it haute cuisine, you'll love Papa Perez. Although Velveeta on your nachos might put off even the snootiest of Taco Bell aficionados, as might the fact that the guacamole is not house-made, but made by Wholly Guacamole. "Irked" is how I'd describe my palate, and I'll never eat there again. I would however recommend the top shelf margaritas...Don Julio, Grand Marnier. It almost made up for the food, but never mind. Not really. They can't even blend their margaritas there, because the "blenders are seriously underpowered." Next time I'd like shitty "Mexican" food, I'll go to the grocery store, buy some chips, put some Cheez Whiz on them and throw them in the microwave. I'm positive I would enjoy it as much. read more

Had the stuffed avocado and the flavor was perfect, returned a few weeks later for the quesso beef fajitas enchiladas.Well I'm still going

Wierd how I missed this place for so long. Its just 2 doors down from Los Nortenos, across from the LaSalle Hotel. The restaurant is cozy and much more intimate than its neighbor. I tried their beef fajita taco, and a beef enchilada. The fajita meat was way too salty, and had the bitter undertones characteristic of tenderizers and papain. This suggests the meat is shipped from their foodservice vendor doused with tenderizers & seasoning. The cooks should perhaps rinse some of this off before griling. The meat was juicy & plentiful in the flour tortilla, but with that salt content, it really disappointed. The enchilada was inferior to those to be had next door, or even at tourist Tex-Mex joints like Pancho's (Gone) or Casa Ole or Los Cucos or On The Border. I wasn't that impressed with any of the Mi Cocina locations around town, either. read more

I love coming here. In my opinion, they have the best charro beans in town. The chips are light and crispy and I prefer their style of salsa to other chunkier styles. They have good lunch specials that include tea. I enjoy their stuffed avacados and get them a la cart when I don't think I'll have room for the rice and beans. This is my go-to place in Downtown read more

Staff was amazing, Very sweet, attentive, quick. Food was plentiful but not very flavorful. I got the fried avocado and was pretty excited about it. I had to add salt which I NEVER do. I will go back and just order something different. Overall pretty good place and one of the 3 places that are open on a Sunday downtown. What's up with THAT? lol read more

Papa Perez is the grown-up version of Mi Cocina. My fiance and I went to Papa Perez because we wanted to go to Downtown Bryan for a little while. When the server brought out the hot sauce and chips, I couldn't help but notice that there was something familiar about the sauce. And when I ordered my food (two cheese enchiladas as usual), I got that feeling again. The server, who was very friendly and helpful, came to ask us how the food was, and I told him that it was great and that it seemed a lot like Mi Cocina to me. To my surprise he told me that one of the cooks at Mi Cocina jumped ship to start his own restaurant. Mystery solved. The food here is a little more refined than at Mi Cocina. Don't misunderstand me. Mi Cocina is very good at what they do, but Papa Perez is trying to fit into another niche, a nicer sit-down restaurant. The place is still very casual, but it's a little bit of a step-up in style from Mi Cocina where the clientele are wearing jean shorts, flip-flops, and a Texas A&M t-shirt. The Verdict: Come to support a local business, leave because you can't eat anymore hot sauce. read more

When I am in town, I often eat at Papa Perez. Really good service and always clean. The green sauce has a great kick to it and goes well with enchiladas. The fried avocadoes are great (something you don't often find in the DFW area?) as is the queso and frijoles rancheros. Haven't found anything I haven't liked over the last few years of visiting every few months. Their set-up also makes it easier for larger parties to be seated quickly. read more

I love this place! The food is good, and the margaritas are strong. I have had many good experiences here but taking off a point because recently when I brought my family that was in town we had a very rude waiter, who seemed very annoyed at the fact that my mom is vegetarian and wanted a dish without meat. Otherwise, I love this place. Great queso! read more

I ordered the empanadas with a side of guacamole, rice, and charro beans. The rice wasn't cooked very well. The beans were too thick, almost refried beans. My boyfriend ordered the enchiladas and they tasted like they were just microwaved. I also order a piña colada, which was very tasty. The customer service was excellent, but I would not come back because of the quality of the food. read more

Neither the red nor green salsa is flavorful and the servings of guacamole & pico with the entrees are skimpy. Not an awful place, just not top tier. NEVER GOING HERE AGAIN!!!!! I went about 3 years ago and the food was terrible then but I gave it a few years really hoping it was improve...WRONG!!! Carne Guisada was the worst I have ever had. Tough, no flavor with only 2 large potatoes and the supreme nachos were a absolute joke. They were small, again no flavor and way over priced for 2 corm tortillas cut in half with small amounts of toppings. The only thing that I will go back for , if I ever do, is the perfect Blue Hawaiian that I had. Waitress keep disappearing as well and had to flag down another one to refill my water. Bad experience all the way around l. read more

In a word: "fine." Service: great, no complaints here. We were seated quickly and our waitress was very attentive. Food: The menu was interesting, but the food ending up being dull. I had the enchiladas verdes, which were bland. The beans and rice were the best part of the meal. Drinks: I had a house margarita. Sadly, it tasted like it was made with a mix - far too sweet. Atmosphere: Good. Papa's tries for an upscale atmosphere and I think it's successful. To its detriment it has TVs visible from pretty much every table in the room. I don't care for restaurants that think they can also be sports bars. Overall, I won't be back here any time soon. read more

Papa Perez is located right next to the La Salle hotel, but you might miss it if you weren't paying attention. Like all other eating places in downtown Bryan, the outside of the business looks very well-maintained and upscale. Inside though, Papa Perez is as homely as any other mom and pop eating place. I had the empanadas which were great. The ratio between crust and filling was perfect, and you get a choice of charro or refried beans. It also came with "queso", which was disappointing because it looked and tasted like melted velveeta.the tacos al carbon, and you either get to choose one meat, or a mix of pork/chicken/beef. You get two tacos piled high with meat, and leaves very little room to pile other things on. The food was great, and the service staff were very attentive. It's not the best in town, but its somewhere we'll go in a fix. read more

Our server never asked if we wanted an appetizer and she filled our glass half full of water. She came to take our order and said, "Y'all know what you want yet?" She never came back until she literally threw the tab on the other side of the table. Never got a chip and salsa refill, never got offered a water refill, and we were never asked if we needed anything else. I gave her a $0 tip and called the manager over and the manager was very nice but the server came over and was all "IS SOMETHING WRONG?!" Yes, your service. She was too busy talking to the table next to us to ever pay attention to us. Horrible service, great food. Also, I could see our waitress's buttcrack on the top of her jeans. Go for the food but not the service. Zero dollar tip for a zero level b*tch. read more

Papa Perez is literally my favorite Mexican restaurant in the BCS area. The staff is so friendly and always make you feel like you're important. The salsa is delicious and some of the best salsa. I came here with my best friend and he has an allergy to cheese and he alerted the server of that when ordering the daily soup but it came out covered in cheese and the server claimed he never said anything. The worse TexMex food. I sent my food back & the waitress wanted me to pay for it. I'll never come here again

Wow, so disappointed. Recently moved to Bryan, still looking for our favorite Mexican restaurant, it will NOT be Papa Perez. Watery queso and flat guacamole for starters while we waited (too long!) for our crawfish enchilada entree and we could smell the rotten fish odor as soon as the server placed the plate on the table. Unbelievable. They were kind enough to take it off our check at least. Nibbling on a steak fajita taco I had ordered on the side while I waited to settle the bill and the meat in he taco tasted funny too.
