I have a policy of trying a place three times, just to give them the benefit of a doubt; maybe I caught them on a bad day, who knows. But if I am getting the same vibe, I'll know definitely if I'm going to be a regular thereafter or not. Papa Perez isn't one of those places. First and foremost, every time I've gone, the staff have been very friendly. The food while certainly not the worst Mexican food I've ever had in B/CS area, is only so-so. The beans are tasteless and bland. The rice is equally as bland but at least somewhat moist. I only mention that because Mexican rice in restaurants is often dry and devoid of any flavor. If you are a fan of Mex food, then you know exactly what I mean. This past weekend I tried the Chili con Carne plate, and I couldn't eat it. Instead I nibbled at the beans and enjoyed the guacamole and chips. When the waitress asked me why I didn't like the food, I owned it immediately and told her it was my own fault for not reading the entree description thoroughly. You see, in my mind when I think of chili con carne, I think of cubed beef in a rich red gravy. Instead I was given a sort of extremely soupy ground beef dish, that was greasy and heavy in salt. Of the two most popular Tex-Mex restaurants in downtown Bryan (Papa Perez and Casa Rodrigues), Papa Perez is my favorite. I've been coming here since they were in their original location across the street. The food here is delicious and they offer great family style options as well. So here's a story for you: Their Fiesta plates feed up to 4 people with several pounds of food. My roommate Junior year bet me and a friend that he could eat an entire fiesta family meal by himself. If he finished it all we would cover the $40 tab but if not, he would cover it. When they brought out the food, the other employees cheered and a crowd actually formed around the table. Needless to say he did not finish even half of it and he had abdominal "issues" several days after. Definitely one of the highlights of my Papa Perez experience. When you visit, try the Fried Stuffed Avocado with chicken and cheese, or the fajitas. Both are amazing! Plus, they have Big Red on tap! Always a good sign for a mexican restaurant in Texas! If you're a dessert person, try the Volcano. It resembles a 3rd grade science project and when they bring it out all the employees cheer. A very average Tex Mex joint. We stopped by while wandering around the vicinity. We had a tamale dinner and steak fajita tacos. The tamales tasted very inauthentic and the fajita tacos had a good flavor but the beef was more like pot roast. I was disappointed we chose this place to stop. Unfortunately at the time I had spotty reception and just walked in rather than checking review. The service wasn't great either but being the circumstances of Coronavirus I won't go into detail due to the fact I understand if there is nervousness etc..... They even have a sign on their hostess stand stating not to expect the best service, or whatever, because of the work shortage. If you like zesty food - ASK FOR SOME GREEN SAUCE! I adored by visit to Papa Perez. The food was good, the green sauce (if you hadn't guessed) was amazing, and the service was friendly. I went during prime lunch time on a Friday, with a large group - and like a champ, also had a time deadline - so I knew I was taking a risk. However, it was a risk well worth taking, because our server was very quick to collect orders and bring out food (but not so quick like it seems rude or anything), and was also wonderful bringing us our checks and cashing us out. I normally refuse to make a negative comment about a restaurant in our area.. but I'm sorry to tell you that I will never again return to Papa Perez. The service was slow. No problem. The food was only ok. No problem. A young lady at our table ordered enchiladas with no sauce on them. The waiter brought them out with sauce on them. No problem. We sent them back.... HERE is where the problem started. The waiter came back and said that he "would have to pay for them, but we could get more for us".... WHAT??? The owner came out. He looked at our table and said that the enchiladas come with sauce "as shown on the menu". I have seen her order these often, including at this place. We told him that we ordered them without sauce.. he looked at the teenager in a way that made you KNOW thst he didn't believe her... Her mother looked at him and said firmly "she ordered them with no sauce".. he gave us a really dirty look and walked away. Maybe my taste buds are spoiled being that I'm from Houston and there's a decent Mexican restaurant in just about every corner.. Looking over the menu, you'll glance at the typical Mexican fare with fajita, quesadillas, enchiladas and tacos.. The only problem when you order is that they forgot to add the seasoning... The food tasted bland and not authentic Mexican cuisine.. Papa Perez should've been called Grandpa Smith after tasting how bland this food was... I ordered the fried avocado with chicken and side order of rice and started with the shrimp ceviche.. The shrimp ceviche was minced shrimp with avocado on a bed of chopped lettuce in a martini glass...They probably just washed down the lettuce or maybe the shrimp because it tasted like water (yes I said water), it was flavorless.. Avocado is already pretty bland so you'll need to add a lot of seasoning (salt) to it to give it flavor and I think they didn't get that memo when stuffing it with the chicken because that too was bland!! Friendly faces greeted us as my parents and I rolled in here in a post-wedding grog looking for hearty Tex-Mex to provide some much needed food fuel for the ride home. After hearing some town chatter about how delectable the fried, stuffed avocado we had to try this cherished town favorite. The space was surprisingly busy for such a sleepy small town, but as patrons and servers alike whizzed by, the hostesses weren't phased. We were seated immediately and served chips and their fiery, smoky delicious hot sauce soon after. After a quick discussion with our super sweet waitress and her genuine recommendations - it was settled: we ordered the fried avocado stuffed with chicken. What a treat! But almost just as wonderfully tasty was the tortilla soup and guacamole. Indeed, everything was fresh, hearty, and definitely hit the hangover spot. Although Velveeta on your nachos might put off even the snootiest of Taco Bell aficionados, as might the fact that the guacamole is not house-made, but made by Wholly Guacamole. "Irked" is how I'd describe my palate, and I'll never eat there again. I would however recommend the top shelf margaritas...Don Julio, Grand Marnier. It almost made up for the food, but never mind. Not really. They can't even blend their margaritas there, because the "blenders are seriously underpowered." Wierd how I missed this place for so long. Its just 2 doors down from Los Nortenos, across from the LaSalle Hotel. The restaurant is cozy and much more intimate than its neighbor. I tried their beef fajita taco, and a beef enchilada. The fajita meat was way too salty, and had the bitter undertones characteristic of tenderizers and papain. This suggests the meat is shipped from their foodservice vendor doused with tenderizers & seasoning. The cooks should perhaps rinse some of this off before griling. The meat was juicy & plentiful in the flour tortilla, but with that salt content, it really disappointed. The enchilada was inferior to those to be had next door, or even at tourist Tex-Mex joints like Pancho's (Gone) or Casa Ole or Los Cucos or On The Border. Papa Perez is the grown-up version of Mi Cocina. My fiance and I went to Papa Perez because we wanted to go to Downtown Bryan for a little while. When the server brought out the hot sauce and chips, I couldn't help but notice that there was something familiar about the sauce. And when I ordered my food (two cheese enchiladas as usual), I got that feeling again. The server, who was very friendly and helpful, came to ask us how the food was, and I told him that it was great and that it seemed a lot like Mi Cocina to me. To my surprise he told me that one of the cooks at Mi Cocina jumped ship to start his own restaurant. Mystery solved. The food here is a little more refined than at Mi Cocina. Don't misunderstand me. Mi Cocina is very good at what they do, but Papa Perez is trying to fit into another niche, a nicer sit-down restaurant. The place is still very casual, but it's a little bit of a step-up in style from Mi Cocina where the clientele are wearing jean shorts, flip-flops, and a Texas A&M t-shirt. When I am in town, I often eat at Papa Perez. Really good service and always clean. The green sauce has a great kick to it and goes well with enchiladas. The fried avocadoes are great (something you don't often find in the DFW area?) as is the queso and frijoles rancheros. Papa Perez is literally my favorite Mexican restaurant in the BCS area. The staff is so friendly and always make you feel like you're important. The salsa is delicious and some of the best salsa. I prefer to get the queso enchilada filled with cheese and rice and refried beans. I LOVE these enchiladas. Like all other eating places in downtown Bryan, the outside of the business looks very well-maintained and upscale. Inside though, Papa Perez is as homely as any other mom and pop eating place. I had the empanadas which were great. The ratio between crust and filling was perfect, and you get a choice of charro or refried beans. It also came with "queso", which was disappointing because it looked and tasted like melted velveeta.the tacos al carbon, and you either get to choose one meat, or a mix of pork/chicken/beef. You get two tacos piled high with meat, and leaves very little room to pile other things on. The food was great, and the service staff were very attentive. Watery queso and flat guacamole for starters while we waited (too long!) for our crawfish enchilada entree and we could smell the rotten fish odor as soon as the server placed the plate on the table. They just moved into a beautiful new and bigger location right across the street from the old location, which comes equipped with a full bar. The food is great every time we come.
