Burnt chili instead of French onion soup.
    Anne R.

They did not get my order right. It was a shock, after a long wait to see chili instead of French onion soup. Bummer, ruined the meal. Won't be back.

    Yummy Hair ! :)

I wanted to try some Panera Bread in San Antonio during my stay there. The closest location to my hotel was at Lincoln Heights on the northwest corner of Basse and Broadway. It's in the same plaza as H-E-B, which is actually where I was at when I placed my order on the app. It was Sunday evening, and I didn't realize that this Panera Bread closes at 8 PM on Sundays until it was *almost* too late. I wanted to get a You Pick Two, where you can get two menu items, each at a discounted price. I was hoping to get the bowls, but unfortunately, they had sold out of all bowls that day! Understandable, since it was pretty late in the day. However, they still had enough ingredients to make two chicken sandwiches! Sometime last year, Panera Bread rolled out their Signature and Spicy Take sandwiches, which is supposed to be their entry into the Nashville Hot Chicken craze that has been sweeping the nation like crazy. Don't believe me? Just ask Dave :) Anyways, I made my order in the app for a Signature Take Chicken Sandwich as well as a Spicy Take Chicken Sandwich. If I had time, I would have ordered in person for a change, but since I was running out of it, I chose to order online in the event that I'd get turned away. When you order through the app, you get to choose up to five additional customizations, and I usually go for additional veggies whenever I get the chance. After placing my order, I scheduled the last possible pickup time on Sunday, 7:55 PM. I was able to get my shopping done at H-E-B just in time for pickup. Actually, I had an additional two minutes to spare because my order wasn't ready for pickup until 7:57 PM. Not a big deal, but I wouldn't want to be the one to make all the employees stay late, though I later learned from an employee, Steven, that they wouldn't kick you out if you were still inside at closing time. Since I had just purchased perishable food from the most common grocery store in the Lone Star State, I had to take my takeout bag back to my hotel to eat. With a You Pick Two, you get a choice of a baguette, apple, or chips as your side. Since I didn't think I was eating healthy during my trip, I went with the apple, which I saved for the next day. The chicken sandwiches from Panera Bread come in portable boxes that don't open up like a Big Mac box from McDonalds. Rather, there's a seam in the middle of the box that you pull the tab off of, and the box splits open in half to reveal a chicken sandwich. Convenient for eating on the go or even in the car! When I took both boxes out of my takeout bag, there was no way for me to tell which was the Signature Take and which was the Spicy Take. I wish they had indicated this. One of the sandwiches was unfortunately too dry for me. The other sandwich was loads better with significantly more flavor, but it definitely wasn't as good as a traditional Nashville Hot Chicken sando! I do appreciate how the kitchen crew paid close attention to my customization instructions, however, so kudos to them for that. Even the Panera Bread back home struggles to keep up with me lol. While I didn't hate this Panera Bread's chicken sandos, I also didn't love them either. If I lived close by, I would certainly make this my go to Panera Bread, especially since I could go there after shopping at H-E-B. However, I would be more conscientious of the time I go because of how many menu items they were sold out of at the time of my visit.

PSA: you get a free pastry on your birthday! Just have to sign up for the program! Very friendly staff!! I'm a fan of most things at Panera, but the quality is not always consistent and everything is overpriced in my opinion so that's why I gave it only 3 stars. I should try using their rewards more because I'm sure that helps with the cost. My favorite thing to get is the Chicken Frontega Sandwich with their Broccoli Cheddar Soup. I did see they had some new baguette sandwiches that I would like to try!

    Celeste M.

Small portions for very high prices! I haven't had Panera in years so I thought I'd give them a try. I had an order delivered. The half sandwich sizes were over $10 so I assumed they were huge they were not. Their turkey melt sandwiches similar to a Schlotzsky's sandwich was about a quarter of the size of a Schlotzsky's sandwich and more expensive than the meal. With half the amount of meat, was tasteless and didn't come with a drink. So uninspired and sad.

First time at this location and I had the most disappointing chicken noodle soup ever. The soup was 90 percent broth, 9 percent noodles and 1 percent chicken. I had three tiny crumbles of chicken in the bowl of soup. I also ordered a coffee but the blend I wanted was out, so I had the walnut which wasn't very good.

What the hell is this? This is not a Carmel cold brew. This is black coffee with half and half. I want a refund.

Served with iceberg lettuce. This was a hit. The tofu was perfectly crispy outside, softer inside and the sauce was delicious and perfectly balanced. First time: service was cool-shoulderish but the food was fantastic. We were all BLOWN AWAY. I thought the price a little high for what you get. I swear, there was an issue with my order. I'm telling you now...I didn't order the tofu, so when they delivered it to my table I asked....but they showed me my receipt, which said I did. I was skeptical, but whatever. I think the touchscreen ordering screwed me... Y'all, I wouldn't order tofu in a million years, I don't like it...but ended up eating the entire dish. It was fantastic! Talk about being surprised. Today, was extremely careful on the touchscreen when ordering, and went with the beef curry and chicken. My thoughts when it came out: is there even any beef in this? This is soup, not curry. Oh, and it's not even hot. It's barely even warm. Then, a co-worker was legit served the wrong dish. So, she goes to bring it to their attention, and the server borderline argues with her ...basically telling her "yes, that is what you ordered" - even though she had a receipt showing otherwise. Service is not friendly. Food costs too much. Ambiance is a mix of hole-in-the-wall, eclectic, retro...walls covered in weird posters. I like the vibe, seriously, I just wish the food was worth it and the people were nicer.

Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)

The food feels like the chefs were given good quality materials, but had no idea what to do with them. We ordered a funghi pizza to share then a cinghiale, a costine (short ribs), and a dentice (bass). Funghi pizza was the only dish that made coming worth it at all. It had a nice flavor, but if you're expecting the notes of an earthy mushroom flavor, don't. It's just a nicer version of a standard cheese pizza topped with some onions and mushroom. The cinghiale was just stunningly mediocre. The meat was flavorful, but the pasta itself was shockingly bland. It was just so... ok. The dentice was the best of the 3 individual dishes, but it is just what you would expect some average short ribs with random sauce to taste. The costine was just terrible. Salty on the outside, yet flavorless on the inside. Avoid at all costs. The service was passable, but they clearly overwork their servers as one server just handles an entire section and is too overwhelmed to be timely. I came to cheer myself up, but honestly it only made dinner comically worse. I seriously can't imagine what would cause someone to rate this as 5 stars. Maybe if they thought Olive Garden was 4.5, then I guess this would barely be a 5 in comparison? Either way, if you're looking for good food for your dinner, keep looking. You won't find it here.

Every dish feels thoughtfully curated with tried-and-true recipes rooted in Chef Luca and his family's Northern Italian traditions. This is the kind of place where quality takes priority over quantity. Our server, Gary, was fantastic. He was friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, and passionate about Italian food and wine. His recommendations were spot-on and his enthusiasm felt so genuine. We started with a bread basket accompanied by a little sampling of tapenade, which was savory, briny, and a perfect complement to the warm bread. Came in with a group of four, we kicked things off with the burrata starter--a surprisingly fun and shareable adventure of baked burrata, fresh crostini, roasted cauliflower, asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, and basil cream. There was a lot happening on the plate, but it all worked beautifully together. For our entrées, we ordered the Tartufo, Cinghiale, Bolognese, and Carbonara. And let me just say, the Tartufo was a full-on dinner performance. Gary brought out steaming hot tagliatelle pasta and tossed it tableside inside a giant wheel of Parmesan. He then topped it with crab meat in brown butter before finishing it with a generous shaving of truffle. Every bite was like a perfectly timed symphony of flavors--rich, savory, buttery, and earthy, with nothing outshining the other. I'd put this dish up against anyone's nonna. I sampled the other three entrées as well, and every one was delicious. The gnocchi in the Cinghiale is an absolute must-try--pillowy, texturally delightful, and packed with flavor. Thank you, Nonna Osteria, for such an epic culinary experience. And a special shoutout to Gary for guiding us through the menu and making an already great dinner even better.
