One of the kids was celebrating his 13th birthday and had made a rather specific request: he wanted a birthday cake made out of Texas Roadhouse rolls. More on that masterpiece in a minute. Hannah was our server and she was OUTSTANDING. Managing a table our size while also handling other tables is no small task, but she was attentive, friendly and on top of things throughout the meal. I went with the Chicken Critter Salad, which has been my favorite here for years. My wife had the grilled shrimp with several vegetable sides. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food. Now for our usual restaurant obstacle course: my wife has gluten and dairy allergies, while I have a tree nut allergy and Alpha Gal, with a diabetes kicker just to keep things interesting. I was genuinely surprised to find that Texas Roadhouse has a gluten free menu. Even more important, Hannah took our dietary issues seriously, paid attention to the details and made sure we were comfortable with our choices. That makes a huge difference when eating out with multiple food restrictions. The atmosphere is exactly what you expect from Texas Roadhouse: busy, loud, crowded and energetic. This isn't the place for an intimate conversation or a serious business dinner, but it's absolutely appropriate for families, groups, kids and a casual date. And then there was the birthday cake. The staff actually took their famous rolls and built a two tier birthday cake out of them, using their cinnamon butter as the icing. Look at the picture. This wasn't somebody tossing a few rolls onto a plate and sticking a candle in them. They went all in. For a kid turning 13, they took a funny birthday request and turned it into something genuinely memorable. That kind of effort is what took this visit from a normal night at a familiar chain restaurant to an experience worth writing about. Great job by Hannah and the entire Lancaster Texas Roadhouse team. And they serve it piping hot in its own little crock with a metal spoon. Don't throw those in the trash. The sandwich was as good as I remember, maybe better. Good bread, loads of meat, tomatoes, and a honey mustard spread. I got a 6 inch and it seemed longer than that, although maybe my estimation skills are off... It was very tasty. Held together pretty well. I was stuffed. They have lots of salads, that is, pasta salad or potato salad, etc. They are always good, but I didn't have any room with the soup. The place was clean, it was steady at 1 PM but not packed. Plenty of parking in the big mall lot. I really enjoyed it. And as far as sandwich shops go, this is about as good as it gets.
