I've been giving out a lot of "five stars" lately. I don't think it's because my standards have relaxed. I think I've been going to good places, partly with Yelp's help. Or I've just been lucky. I did not expect to give this five stars, or to enjoy it quite as much as I did. I mean, it's a sandwich shop. Grinders used to be scattered around Columbus, and this might be the only one left. I used to go to the one by me all the time. This happened to be nearby today, and so I stopped in out of nostalgia. And it was pretty much what I remember. But a peak experience. Service was great, fast and friendly. The menu is pretty much the same as it always was. Lobster bisque was one of the soups of the day and I didn't expect it to be great quality, but it sounded good, and I got my usual club sub. Soup and drink, and bread for the soup (you could choose crackers) were up almost immediately. Sandwich took about 10 minutes, but that's of course because it's being toasted. The soup was fine, nothing special, strong sherry odor, lots of tiny bits of lobster. Pleasant enough, and served with a chunk of good bread. And they serve it piping hot in its own little crock with a metal spoon. Don't throw those in the trash. The sandwich was as good as I remember, maybe better. Good bread, loads of meat, tomatoes, and a honey mustard spread. I got a 6 inch and it seemed longer than that, although maybe my estimation skills are off... It was very tasty. Held together pretty well. I was stuffed. They have lots of salads, that is, pasta salad or potato salad, etc. They are always good, but I didn't have any room with the soup. The place was clean, it was steady at 1 PM but not packed. Plenty of parking in the big mall lot. I really enjoyed it. And as far as sandwich shops go, this is about as good as it gets. read more

Every time I get Grinders, I'm a happy man. Used to get the subs but the Stromboli has done something real to me. Fantastic place. Great atmosphere. It is obviously so well run and it seems to have 8 amazing 19 year olds doing so. Truly impressive every time I come, which is getting oftener. read more

Delicious toasted bread, chicken salad has some seasoning, red onion and pimento pieces that make it special. House made cakes, cookies, and other sweat treats. It's an unassuming restaurant from the outside but they support local athletics and student groups which is great. My family ordered 4 sandwiches and they were finished in about 20 minutes. Quick stop off the highway. Amazing spicy chicken sub. Just the right amount of heat on some chucked chicken breast with fresh crisp lettuce and tomato. I opted for the fresh fruit instead of chips and this was just a delightful meal. The staff were pleasant and quickly brought my meal to the outside seating. Yes this place is in a strip mall with a few chicken joints in the parking lot... but you won't get a better sandwich anywhere! Super delicious! I haven't had Grinders in a looooooong time and was in the area so I had to scratch that itch and I have to say it was a great decision. Seeing the checkered floor and the glass cubes... nostalgia. Had a hard time choosing between my 3 favs - the club, cordon bleu, and buffalo chicken w/ gorgonzola. I went w/ the buffalo and the cheddar mac. The portion on the cheddar mac was somehow bigger than I remember and I squeezed two meals out of a 10" sub and one side. Win. I love this place. Just as good if not better than I remember. I'll be back often. Worth the trip to the west side around 270. So glad there's still one or two of these spots in Columbus. read more

Huge menu in fact takes up 4 large boards that will take some time to decide what to use this meal's calories. Has a deal for $7.50: 2 of 3 - 4 inch grinder, soup of the day, or salad. Wanted the lobster bisque, but not ready yet so had to settle for tomato bisque. Choice of crackers or their bread baked with Italian dressing in it. Got the pizza grinder with mushrooms instead of pepperoni. I could have just seen EBS trying to make up his mind between all the kinds, but Philly cheese steak would have won in the end knowing him. I was a little surprised that they use fresh mushrooms, but happy to see that. Tomato bisque was just a bit on the spicy side, but still good. Pizza grinder was so filling that I couldn't have room for dessert. Iced sugar cookies or no baked cookies were so tempting. So was the Carrot Cake. Line by the case didn't allow for a picture to show the variety of dessert. Might have to stop in some time just to get a dessert. Had to take a star off for those dreaded Pepsi products. The retro table and chairs and black & white tile floors gave the dinning area that 50s vibe. Not that I am that old to remember. Good food for a good price. This is the best Grinders in the city by miles! I have loved everything I get here. I work in the area and sometimes try to call in my order b/c I have limited time for lunch. Anytime I do it the phone disconnects. I suspect they don't need the business b/c they're always so busy, they place the call on hold and just hang up, LOL. A friend invited me out for a grinder and I must say I didn't understand the hype. WH sits in an older shopping place on the west side of the city. It's pretty unassuming but I must say the grinders are tasty! The decor definitely gave me some old school vibes. There is plenty of seating so don't be afraid to bring your friends along. The employees were very pleasant. They brought a few extra items some in our group needed without hesitation. The Italian grinder was the star of the show for me! We used to be a big fan of Grinders. The food is amazing, however, we will not be returning. Up until yesterday, we would order carryout just about weekly. Or order was 10-15 single meatballs with marinara sauce and cheese and an Italian salad. We don't eat much bread so the meatballs (I know that the meatballs contain bread, but it's still better than the alternative) themselves was perfect for us. So we called last last night and attempted to order 15 meatballs with the sauce and cheese. We were informed that they will no longer sell just meatballs. The manager's reasoning was that they sold too many. It seems to me that is a good problem to have. They sell too many? I would think that would be a good thing. So the only way you can get meatballs now is to order a meatball sub. Why would I want to order a sub when we don't want a sub. We just want the meatballs. If they are that much in demand, raise the price to make it worth it to you. Go from $1 per meatball to $2 per meatball. We would have still bought them. So if they are "selling too many", that means that there are a lot of people ordering them, right? So if there are a lot of people ordering them, why would you purposefully alienate so much of your customer base? Seems like bad business to me. We used them for catering for an event last year and also bought an entire sheetcake for another event. We will never return to Grinders for anything, they have lost our business. read more
