The best sandwiches in Columbus! We come to Katzinger's at least once a month, and it never disappoints. We have a few go to's (#41 and #16), but we like to try a new one each time we go. Every single one has been great! Tonight we got #57 Franklin's Kibbetz, which has homemade mozzarella and pesto and added turkey (bottom right). We also got #5 Mimi's Melody, which has their homemade tuna salad on grilled rye (bottom left). Next we got our favorite, #41 Phil Katzinger's Club, which has their homemade chicken salad, bacon, and Honeycup mustard (top left). Finally we got #3 Ari's Open Door, which had pastrami, salami, and cream cheese (top right). It is St Patrick's Day so I looked for a deli with corned beef sandwiches nearby and found Katz's. Having lived in NYC I had high expectations for a deli with Katz in the name. Additionally, having had a Goodman's Deli mile high corned beef sandwich when I lived in Cleveland, I had even higher expectations. Their most popular sandwich is the Reuben so I went with that. Katzingers did not meet them. When I arrived to pick up my sandwich I was shocked the line wasn't out the door to place orders before they closed and the dining room had maybe 6 people in it. There were about 6 to go bags on the shelf along with mine. When I mentioned to the cashier that I was surprised it wasn't busier, she said it'll be busier tomorrow. I said the day after St Pat's? No answer. Another not good sign in my mind. When I got home, the wrapped sandwich was bigger than my hand but not very tall. The paper had areas of grease which is a good sign for this sandwich. The corned beef itself was tender but there wasn't as much of it, maybe an inch high and 1/3 of the bread had no corned beef. I also could not taste the thousand island dressing. The rye bread was toasted but pretty soggy. The crust was mostly crunchy. The bread slices were paired upside down putting a narrower side a larger side against each other. There is not enough sauerkraut and it is not very sour. I was given the choice of a dill or garlic pickle but I cannot tell you how it was because they didn't put it in the bag. I expected this sandwich to have so much meat in it, I could eat for multiple days for $18. Again, disappointed. Maybe I should've gotten the deli sized version but paying that much for a sandwich... The inside of the deli is fun and it's obvious it's been around a long time and has been well loved. I wanted to like Katzinger's but since the price and the quality don't match, I cannot. read more

Food very good. I have had bigger portions elsewhere. I would like the corn beef to have a stronger taste . The rye bread is perfect . There signature sandwhich need more sauce so just ask for it. Potato salad is refreshing. It's not a southern potato sauce but it is good. Parking is hard and getting a seat inside can be hard but worth it. I recommend trying it a few times. Service is fast and the ambiance is all NYC deli. Don't forget your pickles. read more

Lunch this past Friday. We were lucky that the line was short on arrival, as it was out the door when we received our food. Amazingly broad menu. This is an outstanding deli with nice atmosphere inside and a couple of tables outside, which was our selection on this beautiful sunny day. The bread was incredibly fresh. Pickles and a barrel was a nice touch and took me back to the lower east side restaurants I went to as a kid in New York. The knish was delicious, as was the chopped liver. Coleslaw was OK, nothing special in my opinion, but still tasty. Redskin potato salad was a nice offering. I thought the prices were cheap based on what I'm used to paying in Austin for deli type food that is half as good as Austin doesn't have a real deli in my opinion. I write this with a heavy heart but Katzinger's needs work. Was there six weeks ago. No Blintzes cause one of their large display coolers is broken. Six weeks later.... still broken. Fountain soda machine broken....six weeks later....still broken. Matzo ball soup came right from a jar, but the heel of rye bread that came with it was amazing. Brought back memories of what the place used to be. Staff seems to work hard, I suspect we have a leadership issue. Katzinger's has been a great Columbus institution. This is the best deli anywhere in Ohio! My recommendation is the #41 (Phil's Katzingers Club) it's to die for. I try to mix it up every now and again but that is just so good. The redskin potato salad is to die for. I've never had a bad sandwich here. You also gotta load up on the homemade pickles! The staff is always very nice and the vibe of the Restaraunt is very clean. Used to live in German Village, and we would come here once in awhile; it was kind of expensive for what it was and it was always crowded, so we generally didn't go unless someone was visiting from out of town and had heard about it. Hadn't been in 15-20 years. It's still here, so they're doing something right. It is a local landmark, in the village and in the city. I drive past it almost every day, so had to give it another shot. I went in the early afternoon, after the lunch rush, and there was a long, slow-moving line. The place was crowded and I thought about carrying my food out, but there are extra seats in the back, one of which I was able to snag. Huge menu, all kinds of options, all the classics and some interesting combos. I got a 31, the Belly Buster, which has corned beef and pastrami and slaw, etc. Regular size, which is still a decent sized sandwich, so in this day and age I guess it's not really overpriced. Except that, while it is good, it is not amazing. It is overpriced for the quality. I also snagged a Cajun knish, because of course I had to. It was a good knish; however, there was no Cajun about it at all, except for a hint of red dusted on top. No extra flavor. I passed on the latkes at $5 apiece. They're thick, but holy crap. Not really worth the price. And the pickles? Also good-not-great. Free, which is nice. Maybe I've just been to better delis in the 20 years or so since I was here. Long wait, very long wait in line to order and then for your food to come out. Competition for tables is robust, so grab one as soon as it opens-up and enjoy a bag full of pickles while you wait. Garlic was the better of two, the other being regular dill. No balls for my matzo ball soup? At least I got to try the broth which was typical Jewish deli-style "dishwater." Good, not great and no balls!!! (They ran out). Got the 27 and 64 sandwiches (both large size) to try the corned beef and pastrami as presented. Corned beef was really smoky but good. Pastrami was excellent. An overwhelming menu of sandwiches greet you upon walking into Katzinger's. My wife and I ordered the flagship Katzinger's Reuben and the Kahrl's Killer Club - both DELI-SIZE and both of which are designated as Top 5 sandwiches by the restaurant. Surprisingly, the Club was the better sandwich in the moment and in leftover form. It's a rather straightforward Club, but with the triad of meats piled as high they were, it didn't disappoint. The Reuben slightly disappointed. On paper, I should love this sandwich (especially after subbing sourdough for the usual rye), but I just 'liked' it. Maybe my expectations were too high. Each sandwich came with the ability to pick a pickle from the two barrels in the restaurant. No apologies in saying this, both the dill and the garlic pickle spears were awful. I wish I could un-eat them, but fortunately they were free. However, don't be scared of the true deli sides sold by the establishment. We ordered a potato salad, and it exceeded expectations. With so many other sandwich options to try, I'd go back to Katzinger's... with a better idea of what to expect. read more

Counter service and best of luck finding a table after ordering which worked for me but i wonder how someone orders "for here" and ends up not getting a table. Anyways... The variety of Reuben variants alone was great. Ordered the corned beef and pastrami with creamy slaw on rye and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had. Since out it town, I also snagged the tuna special which sold me on the "alarm cheese and habanero pepper." First time I saw a spicy take on a tuna melt and that was excellent as well. A casual, local spot that you can't skip in German Village. We ordered the Katsinger's Reuben with onions. This place is popping with business, line out the door, phone ringing with more people placing orders, and an extravagant menu filled with options. The line was actually nice as a newbie because I had time to decide on what to get, I went with #70 Kahrl's Killer Club, which is basically their BLT option. Sandwiches are their forte, but you can also buy meat and bread I believe and there's a number of sides. After ordering, we did have to wait a while before ours were ready. There are two types of pickles that you can grab for free if you like pickles! My friend wasn't too impressed with them. We ate outside because it was so beautiful. My sandwich was delicious and so filling!! It's just a bit hard to eat because it is packed with food and although the top cut looks nice, the bottom slice's cut was lopsided. Delicious Jewish deli! There are a ton of options - see the menu on their website for all of them. We got the matzo ball soup (wouldn't get it again, boring and flavorless and no veggies in the broth), and Reuben sandwich which was excellent, and a potato latke. To top it off we bought a slice of key lime pie. They have buckets of pickles to take pickles from. The bathrooms are also nice and there's plenty of seating. Wow- a great fun restaurant in German Village. Went in late afternoon, their sandwiches and Ruebens are so good, my party got a few and split them, and they were fresh and hot- and the bread was so good. The service is nice, took a little while to get food, but was so worth the wait. As far as the pickles go. I'll be honest, I came in with the expectation this would be a 5 star review. I expected complex sandwich flavors with great balance and insanely good pickles. What I got was a pretty average tasting sandwich dominated by meat and not much else for flavor. The complimentary pickles are honestly some of the worst I've ever had. Service was fine and seating is ample. Free parking all over the area. Just an all around disappointment. For being some peoples favorite deli in Columbus it's just really not special. The food order is always accurate, delivered on time, and food warm that should be warm. Really good choices include the matzoh balls (not including the chicken broth), the garlic pickles, and the knishes. The noodle kugel is sweet with lots of vanilla and cinnamon. Their desserts are also delish. In the downside, in the description of their kugel says fruit is in it and you choose between apricot or cherry. I ordered the cherry and looked in vain for cherry. All I could find were three VERY small streaks of pink, transparent, vaguely fruity syrup. Either put fruit in it, or don't say there is fruit in it. Weirdly, the deeply colored chicken broth does not taste of chicken, alliums, or vegetables. It needs salt. But those matzoh balls are fluffy and tender. They would be a grand slam home run with some salt, fresh minced parsley, and garlic powder mixed in. read more

The pastrami and corn beef was tender and juicy. That's about all the positives. Being from Chicago, I compare the food here to my deli at home. I found the soup to be average at best and the bread for the sandwich the same. The meat portion on the sandwich was on the lean side when comparing to a similar institution on other cities. Stopped here while on a road trip to Illinois and it did not disappoint! I sat outside with my dog while my boyfriend went inside and got us a regular Reuben and a potato pancake.
