This Sandwich Brought the Heat: My Visit to Newfangled Kitchen Some meals leave you full. Others leave you talking. And then there's the Lucifer's Hammer sandwich from Newfangled Kitchen in Bexley, Ohio--which left me sweating, smiling, and seriously considering a second round. I'd heard whispers about Newfangled Kitchen for a while. It's one of those word-of-mouth places--no gimmicks, no over-the-top Instagram vibes, just damn good sandwiches built with love (and a little madness). So when I finally found myself near Bexley, I knew I had to stop in. The moment you walk in, you get a sense of what this place is all about. The decor is no-frills but full of personality--warm wood tones, clever sandwich names chalked up on the wall, and a retro, diner-meets-neighborhood-joint kind of charm. It's small inside--cozy, really--with a few tables to snag if you're lucky. But if the weather's nice, the real move is to take your order out to one of the picnic tables just outside. There's something about spicy meatloaf and sunshine that just works. Now, about that sandwich. Lucifer's Hammer. Even the name dares you to underestimate it. We're talking a thick slab of meatloaf--juicy, savory, slightly crisp around the edges--stacked with fiery jalapeños, melted pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and smothered in their housemade diablo sauce. All that gets hugged by a soft, toasted bun. One bite in, and it's clear this isn't just a sandwich. It's a full-on assault (in the best way) on your tastebuds. The meatloaf is the real MVP here--comfort food leveled up. It's hearty, flavorful, and holds its own under the weight of the spice. The jalapeños bring the fire, but it's the diablo sauce that steals the show. Creamy, smoky, spicy--it lingers long after the last bite like a good movie scene you replay in your head. But Newfangled doesn't stop at one knockout. They've got a whole lineup of meatloaf-based magic. There's the "Newfangled"--their namesake sandwich, topped with bacon, cheddar, and a tangy barbecue aioli that brings the sweet-and-savory energy. Or the "Phil's Delight," which throws in fried onions and horseradish mayo for a punchier, richer flavor profile. If you want something a little less volcanic than Lucifer's Hammer but still packed with character, "The Fancy Pants" is a solid move--Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and just enough zip to keep things interesting. And don't sleep on the sides. The mac & cheese is creamy and golden--exactly what you want riding shotgun next to your sandwich. The tater tots are crispy and nostalgic in the best way. And yes, they've got hand-cut fries too--salty, satisfying, and perfect for dipping into any sauce you "accidentally" save from your sandwich. Need something sweet to cool things down after Lucifer scorches your tastebuds? Enter the dessert menu. On my visit, there was a rotating selection of housemade brownies and cookies, and they were everything you hope they'd be--gooey, chocolatey, just-right indulgence that ties the meal together like a great movie ending. Newfangled Kitchen knows what it is: a sandwich shop with soul. No frills. No filler. Just really good food done really well. It's the kind of place where you feel like a regular even on your first visit, where the staff greets you with a smile and a knowing nod when you point to the hotter options on the board. If you ever find yourself anywhere near Bexley, do yourself a favor: stop in. Order the Lucifer's Hammer if you dare, but whatever you choose, bring your appetite. Grab a picnic table if the weather's kind, and take your time with it. Because sometimes, it's not just about the destination--or even the sandwich. Sometimes, you've just gotta take the trip.

Ham Sandwich

We went for the first time today and it will not be our last. Food, service and value is excellent. Kind of a little hole in the wall place but very clean. I had the Fang which is an huge hit meatloaf sandwich which was absolutely incredible. The toppings were fresh and the Fang sauce was tremendous. The bun it came on was very good as well. My wife had a ham sandwich with lettuce and tomato on white bread. There was a generous portion of ham with fresh lettuce and tomato so she could only eat half of it. It was a solid sandwich.

Was in the mood for a sandwich and was following my traditionof trying new places while on the road for my daughter's softball tournaments. Found this place via yelp and did not disappoint. Cute little area and the packs a flavorful punch. I loved the vending machine that didn't stock food but rather books and other knickknacks. It was a nice touch. I got my daughter a basic turkey with mayo and lettuce and she loved it. And she's kind of particular about her sandwiches so that says a lot. Couldn't decide between two sandwiches so I bought them both. Figured I would have lunch the next day as well. I Did the Belle Donna which was basically a grilled vegetable sandwich which was delicious. Portobello mushrooms tasted amazing And everything and melted together perfectly. My turkey sandwich was basically a spicy version of a Turkey Reuben . Everything was fresh, the bread was amazing and I can see why this place has the reputation that it does. Everybody was very kind and service was quick as I did not order until I walked in. If I lived in Columbus, I would be a regular for sure.

Wow. All I can say is 5 stars on every level. Nicest people, beautiful day with street/front sidewalk seating, delicious sandwiches and drinks. This family run restaurant exceeded my expectations in every way. My mom is handicapped, so trying new places with her can be difficult. This establishment made us feel welcome and were accommodating in every way to her ADA needs. In addition, the bathroom was spotless! We ordered a rueben and tuna along with chips and potato salad. Everything was superb, but the Reuben was the star. We would like to return and try the meatloaf options and chicken salad and I wont be happy until I have that Reuben again. Also one thing that stuck out to me..the young man (son of the family) was working the register and he had the best customer service (rare these days!!). He was kind and patient and genuine in every way. Super impressed! Definitely a fan!

L Hammer

Big meaty unctuous meatloaf sandwiches. I tried the meatloaf Reuben and the L Hammer which were both pretty good. I like the speed of service and convenience of parking as you can park anywhere in Giant Eagles parking lot and just walk over. Both times I got meatloaf but next time I'd like to try their other offerings. This place is a nice change of pace from the other run of the mill chain sandwich making places in the vicinity. This spot makes quality sandwiches like Brown Bag Deli but much closer and more convenient. 4 stars for even the smaller bags of chips being almost HALF of the price of the sandwiches. Come on now, 75% of a bag of chips is JUST AIR anyways. I don't know if their bag of chips prices is because of "inflation" or what but they should also understand that folks can walk feet from their restaurant into Giant Eagle and get a cheaper bag of chips ‍.Also 4 stars for not offering any type of combos with chips and a drink. EVERYTHING is Ala CARTE. Outside of these few things I'll be back!

My friend and I loved our Fang sandwiches! Big slab of meatloaf with fresh and tasty additions. Also, the service was friendly and we got our food fast. Unfortunately, the only seating is outside and mostly not in the shade. There were three tables with only one was in the shade and that one was taken so we had to eat lunch under the blazing hot sun at noon time. I went back to my car for my sunglasses and sun hat but it was still uncomfortable.

My God was this good food! When we saw that they were ranked by Yelp as the best sandwich shop in Ohio, we knew we needed to go... STAT! The restaurant is run by a husband and wife duo. They were in the restaurant, cooking up the delicious food when we went. The guy behind the register was very friendly and helped with all the recommendations. They even brought our food out to us since we sat outside, it was such a beautiful day. Everything is very casual, but really fun 10 out of 10 would recommend!!!

The Macho Man, featuring Price's Macho Mustard.

This place is the absolute best!!! You can't beat their food, service, and did I say food. You can taste the love in the food, and the coolness of the place is out of this world. Also have some really great things for sale.

Bright, clean, and colorful space where you can find a wide selection of strictly gluten-free baked goods, grocery products and coffee drinks. I first ordered their eggnog latte which I thoroughly enjoyed. I've tried many variations of this, but theirs is one of the best as they really pushed the eggnog flavor. Then I ordered two of their brownies and chocolate brookies. The brownies were ok. Moist, but not the best I've had compared to some other gluten-free bakeries like the old Mrs. Turbo's or Good Cafe. The brookie was so bad I don't feel it was even fit to be sold. It had an extremely hard/stiff texture. For the price paid, I can't say that I really enjoyed the baked goods. Would return, but probably only for coffee.

Regardless I was impressed and cant believe I didn't stop in sooner. I will be back to try some coffee and more baked goods!!

We got here on a Saturday morning just after they opened so we thought. They had actually opened 30…read moreminutes earlier than we expected. When you walk in you pull a number and wait for it to be called. Almost felt like I had walked into the DMV. lol We peeked at the display counters while we waited and tried to have our orders ready when it was our turn to expedite the wait for those after us. There were a few shelves that displayed various cookies, breads and things you could grab and go. The place was clean and the process was orderly. They seemed to keep things in the front stocked. We probably waited about 15 minutes. I pulled number 90 and the were calling the last of the 60's. We ordered several items to try including the packzis with three different fillings since we went at the right time of year for these. We grabbed a cheese, strawberry and lemon. We also chose a cheese danish, maple cream stick, apple fritter, cherry turnover and a donut stick. Once we told them what we wanted the girl helping us went to the back and started filling our box. A few moments later she returned, we paid and headed out the door with our sweets. My husband didn't want to wait so we opened up the box once we got to the car and each took one bite from each of our selections. We didn't find anything wrong with our choices. The one thing I was thrown off by is how they make their apple fritters. I almost missed ordering one bc they look nothing like the apple fritters I'm used to eating. It was just ok in my book. Not something I would get again. The donut stick on the other hand is something I wouldn't miss next time. In fact I'd be getting more than one. It was probably my favorite item of all we selected. The cream stick dough was soft. The cream wasn't too sweet. The only thing I would have changed was to have the maple icing be a bit more maple flavored. The turnover was nice and crispy flakey but the filling was just ok. Maybe a different flavor next time if I would get one. How can you go wrong with a cheese danish? Warm this slightly and you're hitting a home run. This was a nice stop and we learned the difference between what we liked and loved. We know just what to get next time. I will say they have a great social media presence and do a phenomenal job interacting with their customers and community.

It was a pleasure to see Resch's Bakery open in Gahanna. As a family new to Ohio in 2013, we heard…read moregood things about Resch's and we have long been supporters in past communities of family owned bakeries. We enjoy their products and welcome Resch's to Gahanna. We are highly confident Resch's would be even more successful if they took two actions: 1. Open for business at least by 7:00 a.m. 2. Offer the option of traditional no-filling Chocolate and Vanilla frosted Long John donuts. -- market data supports this and shows .... Based on: * Sampling of 100+ independent bakery hours across U.S. cities * Regional bakery association listings * Yelp/Google Business hour patterns * Known bakery business models A realistic, data‑grounded estimate is: Only about 10-15% of neighborhood bakeries open at 8:00 a.m. or later. Further market data shows... Bakeries that offer only filled Long Johns are extremely uncommon. Why unfilled Long Johns almost always remain on the menu * They serve the "less sweet" customer segment. * They pair well with coffee (important for morning sales). * They are cheaper to produce and have fewer failure points. * They are the "default bar donut" in many regions. Even bakeries that push filled varieties keep unfilled bars because they sell steadily and require no additional labor. --- Bottom-line conclusion Bakeries that offer only filled Long Johns are very rare -- probably under 5% of all bakeries. The overwhelming majority offer both, with filled varieties outnumbering unfilled but not replacing them.
