Dear Panera,
Your baked goods are above average. The bagels are delicious, as is the bread. It's fresh baked everyday and there's a good variety of breads, bagels and pastries to choose from.
Your restaurant food (soups, sandwiches, salads, etc.) is another story. We paid over $10 for a full turkey, avocado BLT and over $7 for a half of the same sandwich (I didn't want a full sandwich and opted for a bagel instead of the other half of my sandwich). The girl at the counter was new and in the process of being trained. She was a little slow, but (with the help of her trainer/mentor) she actually got my order right (it was accurate on the receipt), but she didn't ask me what type of bread I wanted my sandwich on or what we wanted as sides or solicit any other suggestions.
When the order was brought over to our table, the bagel was wrong (they brought over a sesame bagel instead of an everything bagel), the iced chai latte we ordered came hot, and they placed on the table a soup we didn't even order. When we told the server about it, she was nice enough to take everything back and told us that she'd be right back with everything made correctly. A few minutes later, a different man came over to our table to ask if we wanted to keep the sesame bagel, otherwise he'd have to throw it away. When I said "sure, you can leave it there," he responded, "see?" As if he was insinuating that I wanted two bagels for the price of one. It was so awkward and didn't make any sense. The sandwiches we ordered were so underwhelming, lackluster and boring. The full sandwich was about 4" x 5" of sliced sourdough bread with some thickly sliced turkey (I like my turkey thin-sliced), cold bacon and ONE piece of avocado that was half-brown and didn't look very appetizing. On my half-sandwich, I opted to leave the tomatoes off and add cheese to my sandwich (which cost an additional 30 cents). I took a few bites of the half-sandwich and it reminded me of those pre-packaged sandwiches that you pay $15 for at the airport when you are on a 3 hour layover in the middle of the night and nothing else is open for food.
I should note that the person bussing tables was on top of clearing tables quickly and keeping the floor clean, which is a good thing, but the tables and booths weren't ever wiped down, and we had to wipe the seats and tabletop ourselves before we sat down. Also, while we were there, there was an odd smell that moved around the dining room, like a dirty, used wet kitchen towel that has been sitting around and begins to smell funny.
All in all, I likely won't be back for anything other than to pick up bagels or bread to go. I'm really sad because it's such a cool business model to have a bakery that serves food in a dining room that you can hang and lounge around in all day, but unfortunately the food here is not as good as it could be. It's not good at all. read more
