This review is for the poor treatment we received from Linda (short-haired older brunette woman). My family and I were patiently waiting for our food after being told that the wait is going to be 30 min. We had come to the area for the UC Davis Family Weekend and decided to have lunch at this Panera. Since we had to wait so long for our food, we were going to nibble on some food we had just purchased at the farmers market. Before I can even take it out of the bag, very rude Linda shouts 'NO OUTSIDE FOOD!! HAVE IT OUTSIDE!!!' Wow. Did she have to berate me in front of everyone? Like I committed a crime or something? Linda, try working on your people skills because you are not like most Panera workers I've encountered and I patronize this franchise a lot. If you feel the need to exercise some 'power' at Panera by speaking that way to customers, well you're just a sad and pathetic person. Every time i have food from Panera, I always end up feeling sick. The quality has definitely increased the last couple years, but of all the amazing food places in Davis, why would you ever choose Panera??? Their food is so high in calories, and while their salads are pretty ok, you still walk away feeling like you just had a really unhealthy lunch experience. This is a terrible Panera. Don't count on the online order option. Placed order last night for early this morning. Received email confirming ready for pick up an hour earlier than I requested. When I showed up, they said they did not see my order. Half my order was not available. They first said no smoothies today, then they said could maybe make, when I pressed them how they went from not having smoothies to now maybe can, said they are short on ingredients. I was craving a bagel, and Post Bagel was closed. A friend suggest Panera Bread, why not? I never tried it, there's always a first time for everything. Panera Bread is a nice spot, very clean. That's a big plus. It was empty when I got there.. I looked at the menu, looking for a bagel. I asked for one of the breakfast ones, but they were only served during the morning hours. -_- That's understandable. I asked the worker if they had lox, which is smoked salmon, they don't. I was disappointed. How could you not have lox and you have bagels? Maybe I'm use to the Coho, where they have all sorts of toppings for your bagel. I eventually ordered bagel with chive and onion cream cheese. It was pretty good. It wasn't until I look at my bill that the cream cheese cost more than the bagel. Woah. The staff was nice. Overall, I was disappointed because there's no lox or any other options except for cream cheese. Won't be coming back unless it's for something else on their menu. Panera, you never fail to provide a great study spot... except during your busy hours when I only get 30 minutes of Wi-Fi at a time. This place's got everything you need to study--coffees, teas, salads, sandwiches, and of course, bread. Please, I'm on an all-carb diet. Bread is all I need to survive through 8 hours straight of chemistry. Jokes aside, Panera's got this great thing going where you can mix and match pretty much anything. They call it the "You Pick 2". Thankfully I get to choose the two myself. You can get two halves of a salad, soup, panini or pasta for the best of both worlds. 4 because where else can you study for 8 hours straight and not want to die? read more

We ordered online and were excited that our food would be ready in 10 minutes. Still, we don't live too close so we got there 20 minutes after ordering. The guy was rude and blew us off, saying our name hadn't shown up yet and they were backed up. While waiting, we heard another employee badmouthing other customers. After 10 more minutes of waiting, we asked about progress and were told it had shown up on their list but it would be another 20 minutes. Nothing offered for our extra 40 minutes of waiting, but we did get a cold, stale piece of bread thrown on top of our order. And also, there is a bench big enough for one person, so while we waited, we stood the whole time, which was fine for us except I saw two physically disabled folks who had to stand the whole time. I'm really confused as to how we ended up so low on their list and why call it rapid pick-up if it isn't rapid at all? I was pretty excited to see that our food would be ready quickly and the food itself seemed delicious but was really not too good (1/2 watermelon kale salad and 1/2 Mediterranean sandwich). My husband and I have eaten at a lot of different Paneras in different locations. We generally love the healthy options. The Davis location was by far the worst experience we have had. They sold us two fountain drinks, but found they only had one tea rather than all the normal choices. The salad had wilted lettuce with a flea hopping on the plate. We sat outside and had to search for a chair that wasn't broken or badly worn out. They were out of metal forks. The garbage was overflowing with lots of flies trying to get at our food. I haven't eaten here in a while, and decided to give it another try today. I had the roasted turkey cranberry flatbread (a season item) and the spicy thai salad. Really disappointed in this Panera today. I was craving mac and cheese in a bread bowl only to find out they were out of mac and cheese. Disappointed, I asked for another pasta in a bread bowl, they were out of bread all together though (baguettes, grilled cheese bread, and bowls). So I got pasta and asked for a side of chips, which they were also out of. I was not only seriously disappointed that they were out of basically the most important thing on the menu (literally bread is in the name) but that they didn't offer me anything to make up for it. However, no amount of stars revoked would lessen the utter distress I experienced upon finding pubic hairs in my chicken salad sandwich- lightly mayonnaised. I was deeply disturbed to find a single delicate hair protruding from my baked Asiago, though allow me to describe that my bewilderment did not stop there. Okay. I love Panera. The food is great. But this is a review of their SERVICE. I'm actually here right now. I'm studying. It's pretty late and they've been closed for half an hour. I'm about to leave but I really just wanted to say this. What really appalled me tonight and what really pushed me to write this review were the sudden racist slurs the employees were throwing around after a group of Asian high schoolers and a few of their parents left. They started yelling out their over-exaggerated impressions of Asian accents, mimicking one of the parent's last words of thanks to one of the staff when they left. I've worked in a restaurant before. I know the aches and pains of servicing rude customers all day, then having them loiter around after closing. But this particular group was not rude at all; ALL of them ordered drinks and only stayed behind to talk a little. They weren't even there very long. So I find this experience REALLY unprofessional and uncalled for. And it's really not like they didn't know my friend and I weren't there, though we were tucked away in a side booth. One of the staff for sure saw us and even courteously noted to vacuum around us until we left. So a star for her. What really puts the cherry on top is the fact that several other groups were there after closing as well, but none of the staff called them out on it. And they were Caucasian. Yeah, maybe I'm being sensitive. Maybe I'm being a little hard on the staff, most of whom go to UC Davis with me and are also stressing out about their midterms or whatever. Great underrated study spot/ cafe. I find the sandwich/soup combo with the baguette side is the best deal for me as I feel you get more for your money. The ingredients are fresh and the baguette is always amazingly soft and chewy. I'm a fan of their tomato bread so I ask to sub that in for the sandwich. Their soups are always hearty and flavorful- havnt tried a bad one yet. Although panera is a chain, their sandwiches are always really tasty. Soft bread and fresh ingredients. (+) Sierra turkey sandwich (+) French onion soup (+) chicken and wild rice soup (+) broccoli cheese soup (-) Pastries- not sure why, but their pastries (anything but the bread, really) is subpar and aren't good at all. YAY!!! About time they opened a Panera nearby! Great option for lunch, and the bread is totally tastier than what you can find in Nugget. Every so often I make something that needs a baguette with a nice crunchy outside, soft chewy inside...and I'm glad I can find it now! It's no Acme Bread, but still quite an improvement. Same perks apply here, as it does at all Paneras - free refills on coffee, free wifi. However, beware of locals who give you the evil eye for taking up a table for hours. This Panera is a bit smaller than usual. A couple last thoughts - they just opened, so they're still working out the kinks. Service is a bit slow (staff still in training?), and unlike other Paneras, you will need to pick up your own food rather than having it brought to you. Prices are a little high for what you get. Food is quite tasty. I am a big fan of the chocolate duet cookie, pumpkin muffins and their sourdough bread. I always buy the bread sliced. On cold days, the soup in a bread bowl hits the spot. I tried the Greek style lemon chicken soup out in Roseville but have yet to see it at the Davis location. There's usually a lot of foot traffic in restaurant and a fair number of students studying. They have free wifi, but limit your use between 11AM to 1PM to 30 minutes for the lunch rush. I was there two nights ago to catch up with my friends. We realized that we had an internet access there for only half an hour. So my friend asked the staff, she was told "we don't want students to sit here to study and take up the table for hours, so we have limited our internet access. I've been eating at Panera since I lived in Missouri, when Panera was called the "Saint Louis Bread Company," so that's quite a long time...quite a lot of food to talk about. The not-so-good: One thing that comes to mind is the quality of their soups. In my opinion, this is something that has decreased over time, much to my disappointment, as the creamy chicken and wild rice soup used to be a weekly staple. This is not a complaint about the fact that Panera's soups are pre-made and shipped to each location in plastic bags...I'm just not a fan of what's IN the bags these days. The lettuce-to-other-salad-stuff ratio in their salads has also gone astray. However, as Panera seems so fond of saying, at least the quality of the ingredients is good and fresh. The good: Panera continues to deliver, with such items as the sandwiches, pasta, and baked goods (there's nothing like their cinnamon crunch bagel or carrot cake muffin). I also enjoy their drinks, such as the green tea, the blended coffee drinks, and the smoothies (especially mango). Additionally, I really appreciate that this location has ample study space with lamps, AC, couches and tables, and free refills on soda drinks and tea/coffee. I ordered a Green Goddess Chicken salad to go. I wanted a chicken salad. When I got home, there was NO CHICKEN on my chicken salad and No bacon. There were 3 or 4 chunks of avocado, half a boiled egg and some pickled onion on top of some wilted greens. The take home box was a good size but a full size salad was just enough to cover the bottom of he box. My husband's salad was not included in the take out bag. Over all, it seemed that the 3rd string team was working tonight, the cream cheese on our flat bread sandwich was more of an aioli (thin when it should have been thick and rich) then a cream cheese spread. Of course the manager was courteous on the phone but providing a complementary meal in the future does not feed me dinner today. He seemed doubtful about me having no chicken on my chicken salad. Honestly, I do enjoy the food and atmosphere at Panera, but I'd have to say it is definitely overpriced for a college student's budget. I come here from time to time to enjoy their free wifi (although only 30 min allowance during peak meal hours), and also the free air conditioning to help me survive the scorching Davis heat! My go-to item on the menu is the Fuji Apple Chicken Salad. The blend of those sweet apple chips and savory chicken and onions get me! It's a great filling meal without making you feel heavy. However, -1 star for the price (a meal usually runs close to 10 dollars!) and -1 star for the wifi restrictions and also unoriginality of the menu (pretty standard American food) But food quality is good, and atmosphere is good for studying, IF you manage to find a seat! read more

Best things about Panera Bread: Excellent and friendly staff! All so helpful and happy! FREE refills on coffee and tea!!!! My favorite coffee bean brew is their hazelnut blend. I could drink it all day and sometimes I do :) They have a cool rewards program where you occasionally receive free or discounted coffees, smoothies, pastries, etc... I LOVE their bagels and cream cheese!!! One of my favorite morning bites :) But their scones and breakfast sandwiches are amazing as well! The seating situation: lots of corner tables where you can sit down and feel like you have some privacy to study, read, etc...and almost all the tables have outlets. I especially love that!! I think Panera is the perfect study spot! Unlimited refills on your coffee or tea, plenty of tables and outlets, also, the wifi is free but limited during certain hours. So, for studying purposes that's ideal for me...less time wasted on the internet! :) Last note: try the broccoli and chedder soup!! It's so delicious! read more

I honestly didn't think the food here was that great. I ordered a panini with turkey, bacon, and cheese. It was small, I had to go searching for the itty-bitty piece of bacon on it, and it kind of seemed like it was assembled and made on a George Foreman or something. I mean, it tasted alright, but it didn't seem like it was worth $9.00. The restaurant itself was very nice: large, open, free wifi, and conveniently located in the heart of downtown Davis. All of their bread on display looked delicious, too. Disclosure: Two-Star rating is based solely on the food and coffee. I was honestly excited to come here when it first opened; having been a Davis coffee-house veteran for all my undergrad career, studying at Mishka's or CloudForest, I was very intrigued to see a chain-branded place opening up where the old Blockbuster was. I came here just two weeks after it had opened in the morning for some breakfast and coffee and EVERYTHING on the display looked fantastic. However, I had ordered a simple Egg Sandwich bagel and that was horribly made and the bread was smushed.. and for the price (comparing it to a college student budget), it was not exactly what I had expected. Flavorless and it definitely was not made in house; perhaps heated up here but it had the McDonald's look to it that made it seem like it had been delivered from some Panera factory warehouse. For a place that has "Bread" in it's name, it doesn't deliver or live up to it. But again, I'm a bread afficionado and compare most of my bread to the standards of Village Bakery. The coffee was exchanged out at the time I got there since the previous container was emptied but it tasted flat and diluted with too much water (I had the Hazelnut). The people are fantastically nice though and helpful. The service was quick, snappy and kinda cool that they hand out those buzzers for your order (though it seems like overkill, especially when it starts buzzing and vibrating like mad and scares you out of your calm, sleepy morning-state). The place and service and facilities deserve four stars but the food is definitely barely a two star rating. I won't be coming back here. read more

2 stars for the continually declining quality of the chipotle chicken sandwich. Been ordering the sandwich for 5 years and it has reduced about 30-40% in size in recent years. Also the quality of the french bread has declined, and the quality of the chicken has declined. And the quality of the ancho sauce they put on it has declined. Anyone who says different hasnt been eating this sandwich for 5 years. 1 star for the changed chicken noodle soup. It used to be thick and good tasting, but now you have to pay 5 bucks for watered down soup. I could make that at home. I am giving this location two stars (and not one) only because like a fool, I still go there, and I still enjoy my food when they get it right. We order Panera and bring it back to the office. For every five orders, four are wrong in some way. Extra cheese = hardly any cheese. No chicken on a caesar salad = extra chicken. No bread (several times). Wrong sandwich. Asking for baquettes= rolls. You get the idea. I think the management has switched out or something, but it's really annoying. read more

YUM! So excited to welcome Panera to the Davis community! I went for opening day and boy was it packed! I am pretty sure I ran into almost every one that I know in this town. The service was great, especially considering the amount of people that were there. Some staff members were walking around with free samples of bagels and cookies -- all of which were delicious! I signed up for their rewards program and received a free espresso drink! For my lunch I ordered the Mediterranean veggie sandwich...sooo delicious! Although I think to get the most bank for your buck you are better off ordering a 1/2 sandwich, 1/2 soup/salad meal, it costs just a little bit more but you get a lot more food. read more

I love Panera, it's one of the places I always love to go to wherever I'm traveling. They have free wi-fi, and plenty of outlets! I usually just grab an endless mug of coffee and a baguette. It gets me through my studying and makes sure I stay awake. The baguettes at Panera are one of the best in Davis. I hate to say it, but I do like the generic bread from Panera. I don't really eat anything else here except drinking coffee and baguettes! Though a lot of my friends have said that their sandwiches and soups are great! A great place to study if the library isn't cutting it out for you! Though be warned their wi-fi does have some restrictions, but we all know you're not really using the wi-fi to study. read more
