She's wonderful - 5 stars. HAVE AGAIN: The chocolate croissant and chocolate chip cookie were really good. The French onion soup and half a cran/walnut/chicken sandwich was just right. However, their posted add said each was $5.99, which would be $11.98. Yet I was charged $13.68 instead. I used their kiosk to order because no one was available. This was the one problem. I don't know how this place even has 2.9 stars. There is NEVER anyone at the front to assist and they can't get the pickup orders and instructions together to save their lives. The floor is always sticky and dirty and it seems the place is never cleaned due to under staffing. What should take 2 minutes to pick up a mobile app order, takes 15 minutes. This review is based on catering experiences. My employer orders from Panera often for staff lunches. On the most recent order the delivery driver thought something was missing. He shared that upon delivery and said he included what he thought was missing, which I am grateful for as I would not have caught it unless staff happened to mention. We have tried this Panera location before and have had good experience. My sister and I were in Davis and wanted to have lunch and decided to go here. We both ordered the new Strawberry Caprese Salad hers with chicken and mine without. We both enjoyed our salad. It has mixed greens/ arugula, mozzarella, strawberries, and balsamic vinaigrette. Always love arugula in salad. Love its peppery taste. The flavor combination is good. Good service with one associate checking how our food was. Everybody was helpful. The place is like a maze though. I feel areas are kind of closed off from each other and not open. We like Panera and will sure to come back when in town. Thank you. read more

Panera bread is a reliable place to eat! I love their value duets - I usually get a half smokehouse sandwich and tomato soup. The tomato soup is not my favorite, but you can't substitute on the value duets. The smokehouse sandwich, on the other hand, is amazing!! Great flavor. I also thought their shell Mac n cheese was delicious. They also have student discounts and rewards so definitely take advantage of the deals that are applicable to you. For those looking for a place to study, they recently added signs on the tables that state you cannot stay more than 60 or 90 minutes. I am not sure how much they enforce this. The music also plays pretty loud so bring your own headphones. read more

Where to start... I was looking forward to a Napa chicken salad sandwich which I learned is discontinued, so I decided to try the basil BLT. This was a terrible choice... the bread was drenched in aioli/mayo. After a messy first bite I grabbed a paper towel and scraped as much off as I could, took another bite still an issue, flipped the sandwich over and proceeded to scrape it ofd that slice of bread as well... really didn't help much each bit it was still squishing out of the sandwich... seriously how much does anyone need ? The lettuce was drenched in it so took the wilted leaves out of my sandwich left with two scrappy pieces of bacon and tomatoes.. and a cinnamon sugar taste... not sure how but every couple bites was like biting into a churro. read more

What a shame. Yet again, our sandwiches came with only 3 tiny pieces of chicken. My Chipotle chicken melt is supposed to have a whole piece of chicken, I didn't even get enough to make a chicken salad it was so miniscule. We paid $30 for sandwiches that were almost all bread...I'm not exaggerating. We went to the Natomas location recently and they had regular portions. The Davis location sucks. I guess they're still in business cuz they're the only location in Davis, but geez it's a crime how little you get in your sandwich...just bread. We won't be coming back. :( read more

Seem to be out of a lot of the breads for the sandwiches. So I knocked a star off for that. Hopefully this is just a one time thing and I just unluckily happened to order at the wrong time. Employees are nice. My sandwich was made pretty quickly and nicely. The lettuce was a little old, brown in some places and one piece shriveled up and black so I had to throw that away. Another star knocked off. Everything else tasted great. I'll try this place again and update my review accordingly. But if I'm ever feeling Panera again I'd probably prefer the Vacaville location just because I've had less of a problem with in stock bread and fresh produce. read more

I haven't been to Panera in years, but we were looking for a quick takeout lunch and felt like sandwiches. Also didn't want to wait in line - just wanted to order ahead and pick up. Panera has a "rapid pick up" option as well as curbside delivery - so we decided to just order ahead. The app is pretty extensive and it took a lot longer to order than to actually wait for the food to pick up. That was more like 10 minutes from the time I ordered to the time I could pick up the food, which is pretty great! When I got there, the food wasn't at the pick up shelf though. I had to ask the sandwich makers, but they had it there for me and it was ready to go. We ordered the toasted steak and white cheddar sandwich, a kids' grilled cheese with a side of baguette, a You Pick Two with the broccoli cheddar soup and the Napa almond chicken salad sandwich and the tuna sandwich. Everyone was happy with what they got. I'm usually ordering the roasted turkey and avocado BLT and I'll have to admit that I missed it and I should have just ordered that. Because I thought I would be healthier and try the chicken salad sandwich instead. And it was. But I couldn't stop thinking about the BLT. So that was my fault. But it was still good. And I will always love their soups - no baked potato soup there, which used to be legendary. I've concluded that my visit to this location was a mistake. I attended around 6pm to eat and study and was immediately hit with an intruding stench upon entry. It was akin to something I might smell at the Yolo County Animal Shelter. Utterly putrid. I noticed their pastries on display were infested with flies, so I ordered a bagel sandwich. It looked questionable at best, but thankfully tasted better than it looked. As for my coffee, straight from the tap it was ice cold. I asked if they offered hot coffee and was informed that that's exactly what I was drinking and was instructed to microwave my coffee. If my education in thermodynamics taught me anything, it taught me that this coffee was in fact, not hot. The sandwich was pretty decent and my friends like to study here, so I unfortunately WILL be returning. Unreal. read more

I went in to get some soup due to having mouth surgery a day prior. They have self order, but it wasn't working for me when using a gift card. I waved a worker down (didn't get his name), but we communicated through my notes and he was so helpful and sweet. He even offered me a different bread that was soft with my soup. I was nervous going in due to my circumstance, but this was a good experience, I just moved to Davis and I will be comming back. Next time I'll be getting the sandwiches and pizzas though. I don't know what is wrong with management or food preparation for the past three months but I kept getting soggy or frost bitten fruit and food that are obviously reduced in size than before to the point that I am mad enough to write this review. See how the edge of the bowl is absolutely clean. And these Cherry tomatoes are soft. Like soggy soft. Your teeth feel nothing when you bite them. Should I be satisfied that at least other things are fresh? Last time the whole bowl was moist and not fresh. I can tell because veggie and the chicken breast slice were also moist. read more

My tomato soup in a bread bowl was ok but not hot enough, my "latte" came out of a press-the-button machine, and they forgot to include the side choice. I would come here twice a week every week for the salads. It was smooth sailing for years. And then - viola! - the managers let the workers ruin it. I held out hope, but the risks finally out weighted the benefits when, after waiting 20 minutes too long, and 5 minutes before they were going to close and kick everyone out, I went to check on my salads progress, and saw that it was sitting in front of the oven, forgotten, while presumably the employee that was making it, decided to pivot to oven cleaning instead. I just watched as they sprayed toxic chemical solvents over and, ipso facto, onto my salad. Seeing the mist of the cleaner dropping onto the lettuce was a bridge to far. I love this place. The employees are always so nice and they work super hard to get orders out on time even with the overwhelming amount of customers and orders. The Sips Club is a great investment and their drinks are always good. It's a great place to study and to get good food, drinks, and customer service. *** Vegetarian Review *** You know those Geico commercials where things just keep getting bigger. Extreme landscaping guy. Big belt buckle guy. And the original, Gym Bro. The message ... more is better. I generally agree, but Panera's Four Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich is the exception where less is more. Tips for first-timers: 1) Street Parking. 90 minutes free, but finding a place can be difficult if you go during peak hours. Panera is almost on the corner of 3rd and F Street, so if you find a spot on the nearby streets, just grab it. The Davis blocks are not long walks. 2) Seating. If you don't like to eat in a refrigerator, there are about 10-12 outside tables. In the Summer, they crank the A/C to an uncomfortable level and your hot bowl of soup turns into a cold gazpacho before you reach your table. Half of the outside tables are shaded. 3) Soups. They are marked "V" for vegetarian to make selections easier. You'll notice the broccoli cheddar isn't "V" worthy because it has a chicken base. 4) They will let you sample soups -- just ask. 5) They'll give you a buzzer when your order is ready. You pick up at the counter. 6) They have a free restaurant points program. Join it! You'll get freebies throughout the year and on your birthday, they have a free bagel to celebrate. This year (2018), for some unknown reason, I could get a free bagel-a-day for the entire month of January - no purchase necessary. Would I come back test? Not for the soup and sandwich. There are so many half soup/sandwich options within 10-15 miles of Panera. It's like eating a Safeway pastry versus Estelles (Sacramento) or 85°C Bakery Cafe (South Sacramento) -- why waste the calories? However, I would come back for what I consider Panera's signature pastry ... their orange scone. Alternatives: 1) Cafeteria 15L (Sacramento) offers the best tomato soup, grilled cheese combo in Sacramento. Even when I fly out of town, I make it point to make it to their airport location -- has the same quality and satisfying comfort of their main location on L Street. 2) De Vere's Irish Pub (Davis and Sacramento) have this classic combo and it makes for a great Sunday brunch after attending church. Pick Two Menu: 1/2 Soup, 1/2 Sandwich and choice of chips, fruit, or a baguette $8.48 Four Cheese Grilled Cheese (Grade C): As mentioned above, less is more. Paneras would be better served offering a simpler grilled cheese sandwich, focusing on a single type of cheese rather than this mega cheese blend of fontina, sharp, monteau, and smoked gouda. Smoked gouda is one of my favorite cheeses, but it absolutely overpowers this average grilled cheese. The biggest test for me on all grilled cheese is the bite and pull test ... the cheese didn't pull at first bite. Maybe it's the chemical makeup of all the cheese blended together forming a non-pulling bond, but my best guess --- it was because they didn't cook it long enough to melt the variety of cheeses that melt at different temperatures. Another reason to simplify this classic sandwich. My proof ... their Country Rustic Bread (tastes like a sourdough) wasn't hot and oddly only had grill marks on one side. Vegetarian Creamy Tomato Soup (Grade C+): Tomato soup is my all-time favorite so I'm fairly critical when I order this at any restaurant. Points for topping with homemade black pepper focaccia croutons for texture, but the overall taste is nothing to write home about. It didn't do anything spectacular. It wasn't full-flavored enough. It wasn't creamy enough. And sadly, it wasn't hot enough. I didn't even need to blow on my first spoonful to cool it down. I read their website description and it says "hints of red pepper and oregano." I can't fully put my finger on it, but let's up the red pepper and oregano and serve this piping hot -- burn my mouth, lawsuit hot and I bet this would be a soup more people would return to. If you're wondering ... it contains milk and wheat. French Baguette (complimentary - Grade A): The crust was flaky and the inners were soft. They have butter at the pick up station so enjoy! Orange Scone (Grade A+): I didn't order one of these on this visit, but in a calendar year, I'll probably eat about 6 and every time, it's mouth watering subtle tang aftertaste mixed with the overall texture of the scone is a perfect snack before boarding a plane or a long road trip. Need some proof -- they usually run out of these before 2pm so it's one of their more popular on-the-go pastries. Overall restaurant observations: 1) Staff are friendly and don't rush you when you're ordering. 2) Half of the tables inside were not cleaned and/or wiped down. We ended up sitting outside and had to still had to wipe down our own table. 3) The restaurant is generally crowded with Macbook-studying students and Kindle reading seniors. This makes for a relaxed atmosphere. read more

Ordered a strawberry banana smoothie which was on the menu and on an add in their wall. Sassy cashier said they didn't carry it at "this location". Ordered 3 other items. All came out in 10 minute intervals. Asked for hot sauce, was told that if they had any it would be by the straws. Checked where I was directed to and found condiment containers full of trash. Usually I love Panera bread, and I've always loved Panera bread but I'm so disappointed. On top of waiting for our food for 40 minutes after it was ready, the workers were giving us attitude when we were checking in on our order since it took so long. When we got home we checked our food and the bread was just sitting at the bottom of the bag not even in a container or wrapped. The chicken noodle soup had ONE piece of chicken and 2 pieces of noodles. It looked like scraps, not even a meal. Not to mention, the broth was extremely salty. I'm very disappointed with the service and quality of food here now and I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here. It's your average Panera. On the bright side it's pretty quiet so you can snag a seat, grab a pastry, and get some studying done. On the downside it's quiet for a reason. The food is really just my emergency only sustenance. I bought a simple Asiago bagel there most recently and ordered in. Was baffled to receive a little cream cheese cup and had to do the shmear myself. It just seems like a waste of plastic to do it that way for eat-in orders, and the amount of cream cheese was lacking too. I had coffee there once before and that was a mistake- too sweet (Madagascar vanilla latte) and served lukewarm. I've even tried a takeout sandwich and it was actually not half bad. I'm just the kind of person that eats in more than out to save money, and so if I had to find a place to eat I'd rather it be some thing I can look forward to. No such thing at Panera. read more

One of the worst managed Paneras I've been to (and that's a very low bar to begin with.) I should also say I've been going to various Paneras in the state for over 20 years, starting in San Diego. In Davis, there is usually nobody out front when you arrive. This last time, I had gotten a sandwich from across the street, and then decided to get a drink and scone from Panera after the fact. But because I had a sandwich that wasn't from there, I was asked to leave. I hadn't actually planned to stay but then decided to eat half my sandwich there -- I'd planned to be there ten minutes tops because I was on my way somewhere else. I had only been there maybe 2 minutes when I was asked to leave by a young male employee. Of course, they will point to their "no outside food or drinks". But I will point to this: MANY people in there didn't appear to have purchased ANYTHING AT ALL -- just sitting in the air conditioned Panera on a 90 degree day with their laptops, ipads and books. You can bring in your own chips, candy or whatever, and read, study or "work remotely" all day, and not purchase anything but don't think you can go in there and PURCHASE their food and drinks, which I did, but eat something else that is NOT theirs, and leave in ten minutes. But do feel free to hang out for hours and pay nothing. Oh and in fact, one guy walked in during the short time I was there, took a coffee cup by the kiosks, went over and got coffee and sat down. No money needed. If I were not the demographic I am, this young kid wouldn't have said a word to me. In FACT, I have seen HOMELESS people hang out in there -- nobody says a word. And of course, nothing said to the free coffee guy, but sit there and drink a PANERA drink, with a PANERA scone but eat half a sandwich from somewhere else for ten minutes? Not allowed. I do not need to go that Panera ever again. And because Panera does not make it easy for you to provide feedback directly to them, here I am on Yelp.
