    My turkey sandwich
    Tortino G.

The food was excellent, the service was great, and the building had perfect decoration. The only complaint I have is that I was too full to finish my meal.

Horrible location. Do not go through the drive thru if you're in a hurry- you'll be waiting 10+ minutes every time.

I had been visiting Matsu-Chan a few times a year since 2009 when I was a university student in the…read moreJapanese [language] minor program and a lot of my classmates would also frequent. After graduating my girlfriend [now wife] and I would make it a point to try and eat at Matsu-Chan when in the area, even after our first kiddo, and eventually our second. Last year before one of our trips to the area my wife let me know that they were under new management and when I looked at the new menu, I was saddened that all of my favorite items were no longer present, and it seemed that my beloved little slice of Japan was now "just" a ramen shop. While my wife loves and can handle ramen and the broth, I would typically get the different rice bowls, or other entrees because while I love me some good ramen it doesn't work out well for me with the hour or so trip to the area. We'd get some rolls, takoyaki, and other appetizers to share around the table before digging into our main entrees. With the increased prices, and fewer options, I will end up going to any of the multitude of places [Aji-ten is usually our #2] to get my kick. I'll miss the little shop and the times I've had, like perusing the manga while waiting for a table. I wish the old owners the best, and the new management as well, especially if it was a familial transfer, but Matsu-Chan is not for me anymore. My wife will eventually get up there and let me know how it is, but for now, I'm just happy that a little bento shop opened near my workplace run by two first gen transplants, so I can at least get my fix without the drive.

Others following us added their names to the waitlist. The restaurant is small with just a handful of tables. One chef, it appears, prepared all the meals. I barely glanced at the menu; I already knew I was having the ramen. The only question was which one. My friend selected the eel bowl while I had the miso pork soup. The latter was served with sliced pork, bamboo shoots, fish cake, and seaweed. The broth was full of flavor; I enjoyed every slurp. I appreciated that the meal was sizeable and inexpensive - I was able to stretch it to two meals. We did not linger given the number of people waiting.

I tried finding something similar to the Chicago Giardiniera sold at the grocery store and nothing could come close to the spiciness and flavor of Potbelly hot peppers. This location usually has hot peppers available at the front counter. I've also been able to order them at the drive-thru. The sandwiches are good. I like the hot peppers on my Potbelly sandwich, but sometimes there aren't enough peppers and the oil from the peppers soak through the wrapping. Now I use the hot peppers at home on homemade salad, sandwiches, or alone as a snack.

Growing up I remember a time when Subway was the only sub sandwich chain that existed. I think the…read morefirst restaurant that challenged its dominance initially was Quiznos, which obviously hasn't been very successful in recent years. But now we have plenty of options in this particular market, and I am confident when I say that Potbelly is my favorite franchise for sandwiches. It's not even just their sandwiches, but also their soups, salads, shakes and decor (it doesn't hurt that they carry my favorite potato chip brand, Zapp's). This particular location is the closest to my home, and I was itching to satisfy my cravings. We ordered the Turkey Avo and Steakhouse Beef sandwiches with a side of Broccoli Cheddar and Chicken Pot Pie soups. I was very pleased with the service here as well and it helped that I came at a time that wasn't as busy as usual. Overall we were satisfied with our meal, but I have to admit I wasn't a fan of the presentation of the sandwiches. I understand that taking food to go runs the risk of them being messy, but that was never really a problem for me with Potbelly as they were always good with wrapping them. I was annoyed mostly by how thick the avocado was in my sandwich because it made all the other ingredients slip and slide so it didn't hold well. Flavor was there, just needed a little more care. Hopefully this was the exception and not the norm here.

We came on a Wednesday evening and I was so shocked to find the parking lot so full! And walking in, I was just as shocked to see how big this place was on the inside. Plenty of seating for sure! Of course we had reservations so that was nice and probably highly recommended. We enjoyed the bread and butter provided to the table as we mingled. They even had gluten free bread ($5 extra). We all ordered a variety of foods. I ordered the waygu meatloaf with mashed potatoes & string beans and it was really enjoyable. It was like eating an elevated home-cooked meal. Everybody was genuinely satisfied. And they provide separate checks so that was also a nice addition to our evening.

They were fairly busy, but we had a reservation and were seated quickly in the Lodge portion of the restaurant. Despite the busyness, the server was attentive throughout our time there. The starting complementary bread was warm and crusty, and it was a good sign of things to come. To start, I ordered a Peach Bourbon and my husband got the Cranberry Incipient to drink. The cocktail was excellent and the flavors were well balanced. My husband said the beer was nice but surprisingly sweet. Later, I ordered the Party Starter NA cocktail which was tart but nicely spiced. For food, we split the coconut shrimp appetizer which came with a sweet Orange Malibu glaze. The sweetness of the glaze paired well with the subtle coconut flavor of the shrimp and they were fried well. I ordered the Baseball steak medium rare with fried Brussels sprouts and Parmesan whipped potatoes as sides. The sides were great, and while the steak was very flavorful, it was a little tough and on the rarer side for my taste. My husband ordered the beef Wellington with cauliflower, carrots, and green beans. The beef was perfectly cooked and the mushroom duxelle was very tasty, but unfortunately the pastry was underbaked (although I know that is notoriously difficult to get just right). The sides were lackluster, lacking any seasoning and likely just steamed with butter. The portion sizes were good; we ate nearly all of it minus a few bites of the sides and were comfortably full. But of course, we couldn't stop there. We ordered the molten lava cake and were convinced by the waiter (without too much effort) to add vanilla ice cream. It was wonderful, but incredibly rich and decadent. Overall, it was a great experience and this is a place we would eat at again.
