I have been a fan of Panera for about 20 years. My wife and I discovered it when we were living in Missouri in the 90's and it was called the St. Louis Bread Company. I'm writing this review because the company has noticeably started growing downhill, at least at this Austin location. I think the employees simply don't care anymore. It's funny, but the food itself seems just fine. The quality is still there as far as I can tell. However, the place is just filthy and completely disorganized. Here's the list of things I noticed.
I arrived around 7pm and the place had almost no customers. Nobody in line. There were about 6 self-serve kiosks and about 6 registers. None of the kiosks had any pagers to take to your table and nobody was stationed at the registers. I stood in front of a register for a few minutes before somebody noticed me, and of course they had to go get somebody else to help me. In the meantime I noticed some of the bakery items were just plopped down without much work to remove cooking sheets or arrange in front of the proper price tags and descriptions.
After I ordered (clearly interrupting the cashier's dinner break) I made my way over to the coffee. One pot was labeled "freshly brewed at 12pm" -- 7 hours old. Trash was everywhere on the floor and I literally could not find one clean table in the place. The trash can was full and the employees had covered up the trash "hole" with a dirty upside-down plate. There was a small bucket with rags floating in the water on top of the trash can, presumably to wipe down the tables. I cleaned off my own table and drank my coffee and ate a pastry. Again, food was fine. The employees here seemed to be just hanging out with 1-2 folks really trying to slowly get the place back together. In the hour I was there, I saw one guy carrying a huge stack of dirty plates to be washed and the same guy running a vacuum. Everybody else seemed to be just out of sight in the kitchen hanging out and talking. I literally overheard a guy joking, "if you could just do all my work for me then I can just hang out and do nothing all day." I had to order some takeout for my daughter before I left, and I was again waiting for a long time before somebody noticed me. The one kid who was cleaning the restaurant and restocking the drink station with lids saw me and took my order. Another employee walked by and made no attempt to help him (poor guy who was helping me was holding 3 bags of lids and struggling to balance them while taking my order).
I grabbed some butter packets out of a tub by the coffee, and there was trash in it! On my way out, I noticed the vestibule was full of leaves and trash, and the doormat was rolled up and pushed to the side. (Maybe somebody was going to sweep and lost interest?). I really did NOT want to attempt the rest room based on how dirty the rest of the place was. I'm glad I skipped it.
It's really sad when a place like this with decent food just completely stops caring about taking care of the restaurant. I 100% blame the management for not training the employees and giving them a sense of pride in providing a clean, welcome environment for the customers.
This is not the only Panera location in Austin where I've noticed this problem. Lakeline and Bee Cave Galleria are not much better. Shout out to Cedar Park 1431 for looking good and having attentive employees.
I hope Panera will visit the Austin locations and work on turning it back around. Just keep it clean and maybe attempt to tidy up and look presentable! I don't want to see cardboard boxes of back stock piled up everywhere. Wipe down surfaces and pick up trash, for pete's sake. If it doesn't turn around, I'll find another restaurant for coffee and pastries. read more
