For a high‑value shipment, that is a basic and reasonable request. I even offered to pay for the tape and pack the item myself at the side counter. Instead, she insisted I purchase additional supplies I didn't need, even though I was flying out and had already paid for the box. What makes this worse is that a local jeweler told me he always watches your staff pack his shipments before he leaves, and he stands off to the side while they do it. If a jeweler can observe the packing of valuable items, I would think a $3,000 guitar deserves the same level of care and transparency. There is no excuse for the way I was treated.
