    Shrimp tempura Don

Why have you all let me sleep on this spot for so long? I had one of the best lunches I've had in a while here and who knew that I'd find amazing Japanese food at a little Oxnard strip mall restaurant?! If you are like me and have driven by this spot a hundred times and not bothered to step in, hurry up and turn around to make your way back because this place is phenomenal for homey comfort Japanese bites. This restaurant gives very mom and pop vibes with cute decor and excellent service. The restaurants decor was inviting and cozy but still spacious to accommodate a good sized group for a lunch or dinner rush. Service was 5 stars hands down. The waitress who took my order and bussed my food out was really nice and attentive. I was impressed at the pacing for the food as everything came out in good time. If you are coming on your lunch break it's good to know you can get in and out in 30 minutes, but they also don't rush you. The menu was bigger than I expected with a lot of great options. They have rice bowls, teriyaki, sushi, bento boxes and more. A nice variety. I was super hungry when I came in here so I luckily got to try a few of their popular items. Started with a miso soup which was super tasty, simple but made right. Alaskan roll: spicy tuna roll topped with fresh salmon. Delicious for a simple roll. The salmon tasted fresh and the spicy tuna had a good little kick to it, was a tasty roll given that they have a limited sushi menu. Some rolls and nigiri but definitely more of a specialty in their rice bowls. I had the tempura shrimp rice bowl with onions and eggs. Omg was this bowl full of flavor, great textures, and they don't skimp on the toppings. This shrimp Don was 5/5! Was one of the best dishes I've had in a while, it was simple but so tasty. I loved the sauce and texture that the crispy shrimp brought to the soft rice and eggs. I've been craving this dish since I left that I'm eager to get back here soon. Can't believe such an inconspicuous place is serving up some of the best Japanese home cooking in the 805. Love this spot and will be back soon, and with some friends!

Never been here before, but food was good. Very welcoming quaint place with fast service for 2 people working. Prices varied on certain items. Would consider returning to support this local place since it's been around since the Esplanade opened.

This place has always been consistent with their meals and customer service. Headed over for dinner after a day of work and a rosary service. We arrived an hour prior to closing and were still welcomed and seated in a friendly manner. The place is always kept clean and plenty of places to seat. We came for katsu Don and a couple appetizers which were served generously and at the appropriate amount of time. My favorite is still the bento boxes with salmon but the katsu Don was perfect dish as comfort food.

My friends ordered off of the Happy Hour menu and were pleased with the Miso Salmon & Tempura. I ordered off both menus. I ordered the Ika Karrage Twice: both times it was burnt, one would think that after sending it back the first time because it was dark brown & black, that the 2nd time they'd have gotten it right, but they didn't care, nor did our server. I ordered an oyster shooter (better to order two for the price is $2 more) and it didn't arrive until the end of our meal & only after I asked, worse, it may have been a whole oyster, but it was shredded and in 3-4 pieces. The pork belly was excellent, but my drink, didn't arrive until over 1/2 way into our meal... What is wrong with these young people? Seriously if you can't do it correctly, maybe this isn't the job for you. My February rating gave kabuki 5 stars, this time it all fell apart. I'll think twice about coming here again, because from this experience the problem was with the staff.

Cozy, intimate, and very much a hole in the wall izakaya, this place is all about authentic Japanese flavors and perfectly grilled skewers. There is NO sushi here (they make that very clear), just kushiyaki, small plates, and goooood vibes. I've never been to Japan (yet), but I would imagine this is what it would be like walking into a small mom and pop shop there. The open kitchen is tiny but fun to watch, and from pretty much any seat you can see your food being made. It's a GREAT date night spot, order a bunch of dishes and share everything so much fun. We came for dinner and with a rotating menu of skewers and specials we were satisfied and it kept things interesting! Lunch is more limited, with preset options, but the quality still hits. The donburi is solid, the chicken curry is comforting (could use a little more protein), and the skewers, especially pork belly, chicken & onion, and meatballs, are seasoned and grilled really well. Veggie skewers like zucchini and brussels sprouts are simple but still tasty. At dinner, my husband and I loved the spicy garlic edamame, chicken thigh with yuzu pepper, ribeye skewer, gyoza, and the yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball with a crispy outside). Pro move: dip the onigiri into the leftover spicy edamame sauce. Trust. Ordering is easy with scan-and-pay, the owner is hands-on, and you can feel the care put into every dish. Take it easy with the ordering (they are typically skewer by skewer because you can easily rack up a hefty bill!) If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience in Ventura, focused on flavor, not trends, Gotetsu absolutely delivers.

Arrived around 7pm on a Sunday and were super silly and didn't put in a reservation beforehand, so we had to wait about 30-40 minutes before securing a table (pro tip: GET A RESERVATION! Sunday night is family night, so it will be tough just being able to simply walk in without a wait). After a beer at another location, we got the glorious text from Gen saying our table was ready, so we scrambled to get back ~30minutes later. We were seated and were met with Arvin, our incredible server. Since we all have been there, he didnt have to go through the rigamarole of telling us how to our nght would go, so we got to orderin! First off, the menu is HUUUUUUUUGE. There are so many options to choose from and we got so many things. My personal favorites were: Kimchi fried rice w/ Cheese - so flavorful with a little bit of kick (i love the spicy) Corn Cheese - because of course Spicy Pork bulgolgi - Again Spicy Honey spicy bulgolgi - This surprised me at how much i liked this. We ordered from the regular menu. The brisket seemed leaner than I remember and didn't taste as high quality as it used to. The pork belly was cut way too thick, I prefer thinner slices so you can get a better char and crisp texture. The galbi marinade also felt a little off this time, slightly too sweet and missing that smoky charred flavor. That said, the service was above average and surprisingly quick despite how busy it was. Honestly, one of the main reasons I still come here is because there aren't many KBBQ options in Ventura County unless you're willing to drive out farther.

I mentioned it, and did not expect a full refund, but they offered that. Unnecessary but appreciated. I returned and ordered my usual Classic Tokatsu, and maybe there is a different broth for Blaze version. This time Classic broth tasted closer to what I happily remember. I also opted for grilled chicken option, and you get much more quantity chicken compared to chashu pork. This makes sense as chashu pork is labor intense. I'm raising back to 4.5 stars (even if I can't show that extra .5) I still place Silverlake and then URamen as my fave local options. I think this location primarily operates as take-out restaurant. There are maybe 5-6 tables available for dining there. There are surprisingly limited # of general tables to eat inside the Annex; may have better luck eating takeout at outside tables. Silverlake's tables are reserved only for those dining in, you can not sit at a table if you're waiting for your takeout order. I ordered the Blaze (tonkatsu broth) ramen. It didn't have that same special taste I remembered. Today my seasoned egg was missing, but that is not the reason for lowering a star. Overall, from what I remember, the broth does not have that same unique flavor; the noodles were still good and fresh tasting. I also had a chicken bao snack, and it did not have a freshly cooked taste; nothing stood out in the flavors. I expected it to have more punch with kimchi inside, but it was kind of flat. Ramen is packed very well for takeout; they have a great system of separating the broth, noodles and making it easy to re-heat ramen at home and mix it together in the larger noodles/ sides bowl. Still good ramen, but maybe the flavors and some quality has become more muted. * Note: I did not realize this until I saw the prices at the counter, but if you order online, prices are approx. 10% higher, probably to cover costs of takeout containers etc. Generally I have not seen higher prices for ordering ahead. It may be more cost-effective to order counter take out if you don't mind waiting in longer lines.

The noodles have the perfect texture and soak up all that incredible flavor. It's the kind of bowl you crave long after you've finished it. Full honesty, the location itself isn't ideal. You have to wait for space to open up first, and only then can you place your order and sit down. It can definitely be inconvenient. The prices are also on the higher side. I'd love to see some occasional specials or slight price adjustments to make it more accessible. That said, I keep coming back anyway. The Garlic Truffle Ramen is just that good. For me, it's worth working around the tight space every single time.

We called Larsen's and they had an open reservation at 7:30 PM. We were greeted with friendly faces, a joyful ambience in the restaurant and it was definitely Christmas. We had two dinners of lobster tail and one of the pork chop. This was a preset menu, which was very representative of their excellent food. The pork chop was probably the best pork chop we've ever had in our lives. It was prepared sous vide style and so tender, juicy and seasoned perfectly. The lobster tails were good size, broiled, but a little dry and not much flavor but the butter made them all better. We still enjoyed it and really were happy to be there. We tried 3 of the desserts. The maple bourbon crème brûlée, the butter cake and their house-made Keylime pie. There were three of us eating and we all tried these options. We had two thumbs up on the crème brûlée, one thumb up on the butter cake and no thumbs up on the Keylime pie.
