What a pleasant little surprise to find this place hiding in the Esplanade Shopping Center. I first walked in afraid that it would be another restaurant that just slaps tooth-achingly sweet teriyaki sauce on everything and calls it Japanese food. Definitely not the case here! This place is a hidden gem serving up a combo of casual street-food or homestyle Japanese cooking! Therefore, this means that one shouldn't walk in here expecting Sugarfish or KazuNori. I did however see some nice roll options on the menu. I really enjoyed their yakisoba! It's a pan-fried noodle dish with vegetables and your choice of meat. The flavor was on point! It even had a sprinkling of aonori, and a little side of pickled ginger which was the perfect little tart gingery bite to complement the dish. The noodles were cooked perfectly, tender and chewy with a bit of smokiness. The serving was quite large as well. When it came out, it had a bit of an effect on people sitting nearby. They gaped at my food, sniffing appreciatively from a distance, until one of them leaned over and asked me what I ordered so they can order it too. I also tried one of the udon noodle dishes with an accompanying beef bowl that my husband ordered, and it was so good. There was a little mix-up with the order so they allowed my husband to replace his beef bowl with the pork katsu rice bowl and gave him a full-size katsu bowl! They were so pleasant and professional about it all that we weren't bothered by the mix-up at all, but they even comped his meal. My gosh, that was sweet and thoughtful of them, not to mention going above and beyond our expectations. Can't wait to try more of what they've got to offer when we're back in town! read more

It's an okay option if you are looking for a quick bite and want udon, a simple roll, or bento box. However, the menu is pretty overpriced for the quality you get and the selection is super basic. I can't believe I have never thought to review Ozeki's! This is one of my family's favorite spots and we eat there often. It's truly Japanese home cooking. The staff is incredibly sweet and attentive and the food is always yummy. Some of our favorite starters are the fried fish cake, cucumber salad, seaweed salad and tofu salad. For the main course, we like it all. From the oyakodon, to the yaki soba, to the udon, to the cold soba, and even to the sushi, we are always happy with our choices. My daughter also loves that the kid's meals are served on Hello Kitty dishes. We will most definitely continue to be regular patrons of this establishment. Ordered to go on a Saturday night food was ready within 10 min. When you walk in you can see a few tables been filled. They don't greet you here like many places does until you reach the register, wait they don't even say hi just asked if you if you're here for pick up. We ended up ordering 3 special combinations which included beef bowl and udon, the beef bowl was good but the udon was lacking a bit of flavors. The takoyaki I like how the outside taste but the octopus there was some pieces you can eat and there was some pieces that were really hard and hard to chew, I didn't like how when they put it in the Togo box with the salad it's watery from the dressing and it's altered the flavored of the food. I've been wanting to try ozeki noodle for a long time now because I keep hearing it's a hidden gem here in Oxnard. I was pleasantly surprised! Ok so here's the deal.. Oxnard-not exactly the epitome of paradise but it does have it's little hole in the walls that make it a worthwhile drive for some good eats. I came into Ozeki for the first time and honestly I must say I was very appalled at the lack of cleanliness when I walked past the cash register down a little hall to use the restroom.. I saw a cart full of dirty dishes and was horrified. The bathroom had me grossed out too. I walked back to my table to share with my sister and friend what I had just experienced, they told me to quit being a drama queen so I shrugged it off and told myself that as long as the sushi roll was amazing, I'd be a happy camper. I had ordered the oxnard roll (spicy tuna roll with jalapeno, tempura and cream cheese I believe) I am very skeptical to restaurants that label their spicy tuna, well, spicy. A good place to go for lunch and they have a couple combo options. My experience: The udon was good - really hot and fresh tempura crumbs. The Gonzales roll was horrible. The "baked" salmon was really dry and didn't seem fresh. It honestly tasted like day old leftover salmon that wasn't microwaved long enough. Although I only have 1 check-in on yelp. I have been coming to Ozeki noodle for many years now. This was 1 of the very few Japanese noodle houses in the area that my friends in college and I used to frequent. Not to much has changed, although it seems ownership has traded hands. But enough backstory lets get to the review. The parking lot is a little full most of the time particularly during lunch which is not a part of the establishments control but still effects my willingness to come in. The actual place itself is very cute. The bamboo wall paper is calming which is great when your eating a yummy soup and the chairs are comfy. The lobby is mostly clean and not cluttered with non-needed sauces on the table. The staff is very friendly and speak Japanese and English which adds a little authenticity to your experience. They are also very attentive. I don't think I can recall a time that the staff hasn't been super friendly and fast with requests. The lobby is a bit small which can be a problem if your trying to have a private conversation, because everyone in the dining area can hear what you're talking about. Onto the food. My personal favorite has to be the tori with udon noodles. It's a great broth soup with large udon noodles and yummy chicken. I like to add Tanuki (fried batter flakes) to my soup to give it some extra texture. My favorite part is the pink and white fish cakes. They take on the flavor of the broth and are very chewy. I also love the (oyoku don)? It's basically a scrambled egg and pieces of chicken over a bowl of rice. I never have to add any sauces because everything I have ordered (including sushi) has great favor. For the non-traditional Japanese food eater, they have an assortment of bento box which has the basics (salad, rice, protein, gyoza, miso soup) and is pretty good. At times they go a little overboard with the teriyaki sauce for me, but to each there own. I do love the large portions. They comparable to the price. Lunch time seems to be a little cheaper( like most Japanese places) but it's still not a bad deal overall. This place really is a gem. Been coming here since the Esplanade remodeled in the early 2000's. It's a very quaint and cozy spot with Japanese comfort food and pleasant service. As far as food goes, I have my usual order (kinpira salad and hot kitsune udon) but everything I have tried is equally tasty, hot and fresh. My bf always orders one of the bowl options or dinner boxes with teriyaki. Dine in and takeout options are both good, fast service and they always pack up everything securely since so much hot liquid is being transported. I think one of my favorite things is coming here on a rainy day after some shopping or going to the movies. The soba salad, udon, and beef bowl combos were pretty good. They were each very simple and clean. I think for noodle quality, they might be the best around oxnard and camarillo. The udon salad had the right balance of vegetables and tuna. I was pleased with the sauce being on the side as well. The beef was pretty good but the ginger was crucial. The rice had good consistency, a little too wet for my preference but id take that over dry rice any day. The wait was too long... we got our dishes 25 minutes after ordering. Given its dinner and the weekend, its understandable.. but service speed is valuable for a small sitdown restaurant. Id probably come back on a weekday. read more

Look the reality is that small Japanese restaurants that used to serve up food the way mom used to cook (albeit my mom's cooking was horrible) are non existent anymore. With franchises and high end restaurants eeking out these former standbys. It's nice to find a small hole in the wall that serves a descent meal at a descent price. All in all, their dishes are not too bad and for what you get they frankly could charge more. Give these guys a try because I don't think these types of places will be around much longer. read more
