Wow! Yesterday was the first time my boyfriend and I dined in at Kuu Sushi. Previously, I had ordered takeout / doordash 2x. Each time, the takeout was great. Fish was fresh and everything was packaged neatly. I didn't think it could get much better than that but was I wrong! We dined in yesterday to watch the game, sat at the sushi bar. We were seated promptly. All staff was kind and attentive. We ordered 4 rolls and spicy edamame. Each roll was delicious and what a difference it made it have the sauces added by the sushi chefs. We loved the spicy rolls. They even have kraft beer from Japan outside of Asahi and Sapporo. We had a great experience at Kuu and can't wait to return. read more

I decided to come here with family after many people recommending this place. I'm not sure why. Not impressed and I don't know what's the hype about this place. We went on a Saturday around 8 pm and it happened that they have happy hour. Not impressive either. It was 4 adults, 1 child and 1 baby in stroller . ONLY 4 adults ate. But somehow they charged 20% gratuity! What? Why? Because you're taking seats. Never heard of such a thing. Anyways this won't happen again as we won't be returning here Let's start since we got there. Saturday night at 8 pm. 2 of us for raw sushi and the other two don't like raw so they had Yakisoba and chicken teriyaki. So the sushi came first and we finished our food and the Yakisoba and chicken teriyaki is still not here. We had 4 different servers come asking for things and orders and one of them asked if we got the bill when we hadn't even gotten our food. Not to mention when we asked for straws. It was thrown on the table which is also unacceptable. Finally the hot food came and we decided we wanted more raw sushi and here comes another 25 minutes and still nothing. When the bill came and I saw we were charged for gratuity, I didn't like that because first of all, service was horrible, we didn't get to enjoy the meal together we kept looking to see if our food is coming. Then cherry on top, you would think the owner would try to make it better. No, it was even worse. Yea because you were taking seats. I said there is a kid in stroller and another kid who can't eat sushi. If you have kids, don't bring them because they'll charge you for the seat! Came here to try out their late night happy hour, and it was pretty good. They had a good selection of items to choose from, so anyone who stops by should be able to find something they like. Really enjoyed their pork belly - absolutely delicious. Service was good. I'm conflicted. I came here 2 days in a row. Day one I ordered just a salmon sashimi and it was amazing, 10/10! Day 2 I ordered salmon sashimi, and a few nigiri- eel, salmon belly, and scallop. The nigiri were all delicious, the eel is a very generous size, the scallop while smaller were delicious, and the salmon was tender. My 3 stars is due to the sashimi day 2, out of the 7 pieces 6 of them had small bones, I'm not sure if they weren't cleaned properly or the cuts were not done correctly to avoid bones but that was an incredibly unpleasant and unsafe experience. I'm just thankful it wasn't my nephew eating that as with the sizing that would have been an extreme choking hazard. Based strictly on that I don't think I would return but if you do try this place the fish itself was tasty, just be cautious as you eat. read more

Happy hour is definitely a good time to go in and eat. The sushi is delicious and I always ask for fresh wasabi; it's way better than the green paste stuff. First time trying Kuu Sushi in Ventura via Grubhub and honestly they really delivered. I'm currently doing low carb, which can make ordering takeout feel a little limited, but I was craving sushi and was pleasantly surprised to find options that skip the rice. I ordered the OMG roll, House Cucumber roll, garlic soy beans, miso soup, and seaweed salad. Delivery was quick and reasonable. Everything showed up hot, fresh, and with all the things. Always a small miracle when nothing is missing from a delivery order. The rolls were satisfying, the sides were solid, and the value felt fair for sushi takeout. We politely called back to ask for only ONE spicy mayo and they said no, that it would be an additional 0.75 cents..kinda weird. Then they put us on the phone with someone else and the request was granted. When we received order, the spicy mayo was not there and an order of spicy edamame was missing. Maybe it's time to slow down, grant simple requests for recurring costumers and bring back customer service, a bit. When this happens, I'll modify this accurate review. Also, might I add that we ordered 4 rolls and only received ONE ginger and ONE wasabi...odd.. Update. I ordered again, this time another 4 rolls and a special request for 5 wasabi, 5 ginger's and 10 soy sauces. I received 1 wasabi, 1 ginger, and 4 soy sauces. I called and was made aware that they don't send a number of wasabi's but that they only use 1 portion and will increase the amount depending on the quantity of rolls and I needed to split it up. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon between lunch and dinner. Were seated quickly and served was kind and attentive. Ordered gyoza to start - they were decent but tasted frozen/premade which is not that surprising. Our mains were not good. My wife ordered a dinner combo w teriyaki and garlic chicken. The salad was fresh but the garlic chicken tasted acrid/bitter and burnt like burnt garlic or like the grill is not cleaned enough. It was inedible. The teriyaki chicken was a little better but suffered from a similar problem which leads me to believe it's from the grill. Both were very low quality which sucks for a $25 entree. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a spicy shrimp roll, which came 10 minutes after my wife's entree. My guess is they missed the no cucumber note and had to remake them. The rolls themselves were not great. The spicy tuna was okay but far from good. The spicy shrimp was bad. I don't know what they're trying to do there but it was like the most bland shrimp with a dash of hot sauce. I really enjoy coming to eat sushi here.. probably just as much as I enjoy eating at I Love Sushi so sometimes it is hard to choose between the two. Their flavors (I feel) have a more Mexican theme than ILS so I do appreacite that it is a bit diffrent. It is not a big place but they do have a nice outdoor patio for the overflow of people when it get busy. Their service, food and consistency is what keeps me coming back for more. When you find something you like, it is hard to try different things on the menu however, this is the one place I have been branching out because, so far, I have not had a roll I didn't enjoy. The food here is definitely worth the price! My favorite sushi here was the tuna, it was really buttery and very delicious! Only thing I want to comment is maybe have low sodium soy sauce but other than that, super delicious! The server was really attentive and it was easy getting their attention even though we were seated in the far back corner. Sorry but I will not be returning here.. First off, there was a miscommunication with our server because I specifically asked her if the roll I ordered came with any sauce - she said "what do you have in mind?" Which is odd instead of answering with a simple yes or no. I asked for eel sauce on the side and my roll ends up arriving with spicy mayo on it. I sent it back as I do not like mayo at allll. Went for Friday happy hour (8pm-Close) with friends and family around 8:00pm. It gets packed, so be ready to wait at least 30-40mins to be seated. A lot of benches and places to sit down in the area. For our party of 5 it took an hour to be seated they had accidentally skipped us for seating. Environment was a little chaotic with trying to bus tables quickly and get new patrons in right away and serving out food to the correct tables. We sat in the outside patio area (not spacious) but they do have a heater available. The service overall was okay. The servers and what looked like the manager were attentive. Happy Hour menu was good. Portion sizes for the yakisoba and Teriyaki bowl were a little small for the price range but for the Rolls the prices definitely aligned with the quality. For the basic rolls all the fish were fresh and had a non-fishy smell and taste. Color of the salmon, spicy tuna and yellowtail were very vibrant and texture was perfect. My friends got the Chaos Roll, Three Strikes and California Love fried rolls and an order of chicken yakisoba and they all looked delicious. For my family the grilled garlic pork belly on a stick was a hit! The Donkatsu Ramen was full of flavor and the chicken teriyaki bowl was moist and the sauce was tasty and not too salty. I came here both Friday and Saturday because the food is actually very good, and some of the servers are fantastic. Unfortunately, the manager completely changes the atmosphere of the restaurant. Both nights, she seemed extremely stressed and was constantly yelling at the servers and speaking harshly around customers. There was so much yelling throughout the restaurant that it made the whole experience uncomfortable. I've also noticed that there always seem to be new servers working there. From what I've seen, only about 3 or 4 servers seem to have been there for over a year, while many others don't seem to stay very long. I obviously can't say for sure why employees leave, but after seeing the way the manager speaks to and treats the staff, I can understand why the turnover might be so high. It feels like she takes her stress and frustration out on the employees. She acts like everything has to be done her way and like she knows better than everyone else, but the way she manages creates more chaos than professionalism. It's sad because the restaurant has great food and some really good staff, but the constant yelling and negative energy from management really hurts the atmosphere. I loved how fresh the food tastes. It was a packed house but we were able to reserve our spot online via Yelp. Love the artwork and decore, very vibey. Our waitor and bussers were so helpful and kind. Can't remember our waiters name but he has curly hair - he paid attention to all of the details and ensured our food was made to perfection. Wow! Finally found the best sushi bar around! Not kidding! The fish is so fresh here! The yellowtail, albacore, oysters, Japanese scallops, uni... everything delish! We came on a Wednesday night and it was packed! They are so friendly-not at all stressed by the numbers, clearly well staffed! So grateful for the only 2 seats at the sushi bar that were waiting just for us! We were greeted fast for our drink order and soon after our server took our first round of sushi order... the rest of our sushi we just ordered from the chef. They had a few guys working the sushi bar, constantly busy preparing food and still very friendly. We chatted with Jay quite a bit while he was preparing sushi orders, (He's the manager) and he gave some recommendations that did not disappoint! Our server was so attentive, always checking on us. Our favorites were the Octopus, the yellowtail and the Salmon although everything melted in your mouth like butter! 1 Coedo (Ruri) and 1Asahi for drinks! I came with my girlfriend at night and was able to try out their large happy hour menu. There's a good variety of food on the happy hour menu and we were really hungry so we ordered a lot of food... The best thing I ate was definitely the Chicken Yakisoba ($9.99). It was fresh and hot, so flavorful and delicious. Full of really saucy noodles and tender chicken. For only $10, this was a really fair price and I would come back just for this. I don't think there's any other place in Ventura that sells yakisoba! If you're unfamiliar with what this is, it's basically a Japanese stir-fried noodle dish with vegetables and chicken. It basically tastes like teriyaki with chow mein. The teriyaki chicken bowl ($7.99) was also a good deal, but I didn't really enjoy it as much. It came with the same delicious chicken as the yakisoba with the same teriyaki flavor too. There was a lot of rice in the bowl and not enough sauce to go with it so after eating the chicken on the top, there isn't a lot left other than white rice. The server insisted that we try the Grilled Garlic Pork Belly ($9.50) and said that it's very popular. We were pretty disappointed in this dish honestly. It's four pieces of charred pork belly on a skewer. For $9.50, this was not worth it at all. Albeit the pieces were pretty big at about an inch each, but it was just not worth being $2 a piece. The mixed tempura ($6.95) came with two pieces of shrimp tempura and a few vegetable tempura pieces. I thought this was a very fair price for what it was. This dish was alright; I wouldn't order it again. It just tasted like vegetables fried in batter, but the batter didn't have much taste. The server also recommended that we ordered the rice cake with sausage ($4.95). This was pretty good but it was really expensive for what it was. Two pieces of korean rice cake and two slices of sausage covered in sauce, all on a skewer. If this came with a few skewers, the price would be justified but this just too much for how little it came with. My girlfriend ordered a few of the hand rolls and sashimis. She really liked it and would give the sushi a 10/10. She recommends the hand rolls over the sashimi. The hand rolls are slightly cheaper but she thinks it actually came with more fish than the sashimi! Great deal and delicious sushi. The sushi here is top notch. There's a Japanese sushi chef overseeing all of it as well. We also ordered the chicken katsu off the regular menu for $17.99. They actually forgot that we ordered this and didn't give it to us until I asked where it was. They were quick to resolve the problem and asked if we still wanted it. I wish I had said no, tbh. We had already ordered a lot of food and the katsu wasn't really too good. What I liked about it was that it was very fresh and crispy on the outside with a really good crunch. However, the chicken inside was very thin and some pieces were literally only like 5 mm thick. The chicken seemed tough too and was chewy - not as tender as I would have liked. It comes with rice, miso soup, and a side salad. Overall, would come back for the sushi and chicken yakisoba, both of which are amazing at this place. This past weekend, my family and I were out and about, and we wanted to grab Makenna's, which is right next door to Kuu Sushi. Since it was close to lunchtime, we decided to grab our drinks and walk next door to eat. First impression of the restaurant as we walked in was that it's so pretty, and we loved the large mural of a small street in Japan. The mural took us back to Japan, and we were so excited to try the food. The seats and tables are very modern and comfortable. The service could have been better, which is why I knocked off one star. Our waitress wasn't as attentive or friendly as we would have expected. We tried their lunch special, and it was okay. The sushi wasn't as fresh as I would have liked it to be, and their salmon sushi was good but not the best I have had. I loved their miso soup though! We got seated right away - but then the server who was obviously assigned to our table ignored us for a while, and even went and served someone who had been seated after us. The hostess realized this and quickly remedied the situation by taking our order and bringing us complimentary cups of miso soup, and apologizing for keeping us waiting. this helped us get back on the right foot. Ultimately no matter how good the food, if the service isn't excellent, the food doesn't taste as good. Now to the food. We were so excited to see such large quantities of sashimi available as an option - we immediately settled on getting Special A - it's such a good value. What we both appreciated was the chunky size of each piece of fish...oftentimes the sashimi is sliver thin and not a great mouthfeel - this was so substantial, so fresh and so satisfying. The Chaos roll was spicy crab, avocado, cilantro, jalapeño, seaweed salad, and more...the seaweed salad is what stood out as excellent - the lemon was sliced a little too thick - so it overpowered the bite. Regardless, it was an excellent roll. the OMG was truly OMG - the salmon was fresh, the drizzle delicious and the entire bite was so interestingly different from the usual sushi due to the lack of rice and/or cucumber or any other wrapping. It just made for a tender, yet perfect textured bite because of the crunch of the tempura. Kuu Sushi hit the spot after a busy morning! I went with a couple colleagues for lunch on a weekday, and to my surprised it was pretty packed. For appetizers, we shared a Sushi Sampler and one order of Shrimp Tempura. The sushi tasted fresh and was presented well. The tempura was good too, pretty standard for tempura though. I ordered one of the lunch specials -- the 3 Sushi / 4 Sashimi + 1 roll, which comes with 1 tuna, 1 salmon, 1 yellowtail sushi, 2 tuna sashimi, 2 salmon sushi, and a roll of my choice (in this case I got the spicy tuna). The lunch special comes with a miso soup and a small house salad, which honestly is one of my favorite parts of any sushi lunch special hehe :) Miso soup came hot and was seasoned well, and the dressing on the salad tasted great (citrusy, a bit gingery, slightly sweet and umami). Once again, the fish tasted fresh with just the right amount of firmness in each bite. The rice was cooked well and was perfectly sticky. My only comment about the food is that I couldn't really taste the tuna in the spicy tuna roll, as the spice overpowered the flavor of the fish. We were excited to try this newer sushi spot in Ventura! We started out with jasmine tea and love that it came in a press. The miso soup and salad that came with the entrees were tasty. The Jessica and Kick rolls were both fresh and had great sauces on both of them. The katsu pork was crispy and the dipping sauce was a great accompaniment to it. The garlic chicken had a lot of garlic flavor to it and the vegetable tempura was fried well. The shrimp tempura was fresh and tasty. We also tried the Japanese vegetable pancake which was unique, but also had great flavors. I love how it came out in a hot skillet. The ambiance inside is a bit smaller, but their decor is great and it gives a nice vibe inside. The servers were very attentive to us and made sure we had everything we needed. I love going to Kibo so I wanted to try their new location. Unfortunately for me the service did not meet my expectations. We had a larger party and they were not suited for a large party. The young man who gave us our service did not bring all our chairs for the entire party and did not bring all the menus as well. We were sharing menus for a while since he did not come in to check on us. One of our salads also never came so they ended up taking it off our receipt in the end. The rolls tasted amazing they were very tasty so maybe I will just do a pick up order instead. The woman who worked there was very nice and friendly but she was not our main server. Came across this place after my sister and I went on a Barnes and Noble sister date. I didn't realize there was sushi close by and I believe this is a pretty new spot based on reviews. It's a small quiet well lit restaurant. All the waiters were attentive and helpful. My sister and I took a few things off our sushi when ordering and they were accommodating. To the point that they made sure to ask if any of the take outs were okay and was willing to fix if it wasn't. Everything was delicious! My salmon sashimi was so buttery I wish I got more! My husband and I were looking for a quick lunch spot on our way to Santa Barbara, and this restaurant was open until 10 pm on the fourth of July. Pictures looked good and the prices seemed right, so we made a quick stop off the 101. The restaurant was full with small and large groups but we were able to be seated right away and the service was prompt. Lunch chirashi was only 18.99 and 3 sushi 4 sashimi and 1 roll combo was 17.95.
