Rainbow Roll
Madelyn S.

A friend and I happened to pop into Maki Sushi on a whim during a Ventura filled day! When we chatted with the host, he explained that it was happy hour if we dined in. That was enough to bring us in for dinner. My friend and I took a look at the menu and got to ordering. I opted for the rainbow roll! After a few short minutes, our food came out quickly. I dug in right away and it was so good. Really hit the spot! My friend opted for the California roll with a side of crispy onions. She finished eating before me and asked if I wanted to partake in some of her crispy onions. I added them to the last few bites I had. It was honestly a lot yummier than I anticipated! It tasted like they make the crispy onions in-house. When we got the bill for our dinner, my friend and I were pleased at how reasonable it was! The staff was very friendly at Maki Sushi and the service was efficient. Overall, had a very good experience and would come back!

Salmon carpaccio, and Ventura roll.

The food was fresh, flavorful and the sauces compliment the dishes. The food melts in your mouth and the service is good.

Amazing food fresh and delicious. Service was very good and quick not too crowded. Ambiance was cute and chill

Good enough sushi for a tourist-type location. Left full do that's always a bonus! Will say that the miso soup was a bit heavy, maybe not mixed properly, and quite salty. The Japanese scallops were great though and so was the masago sushi. The cucumber salad looked so pretty but could taste the strong presence of sugar in the mix, which I don't prefer. It all presented well and was mostly pretty good overall. The location is excellent though and they stay open super late!

We had the sushi and sashimi combo along with the spicy beef sukiyaki, and everything was delicious. The owner and server were both very friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

Located in a closed off strip to cars in downtown Ventura with indoor and outdoor dining. Great food for an even greater price! Our party of 9 was seated instantly and dishes took around 15-20 minutes to get out. My A.J. roll, which was basically a California roll with eel was $9.00. Specialty rolls hovered around $17, which is still a decent price!

Toro sushi, flash frozen and thawed correctly. Great texture with premium, real, wasabi. Very fatty, the waygu of Blue Fin.

1/2/26 2200 Hrs / 10 PM Ambience: 3/5 The restaurant itself hasn't changed much since the ownership change. It used to be owned under the name Masa Sushi so I dont know who took it over or if they rebranded. Its a simple and utilitarian space with the bussing and cleaning equipment near where you will be dining if you sit at the sushi bar, which I did. Overall the bathroom, dining area and sidewalk was clean. (The manager or owner regularly sweeps it off) Service: 4/5 I spoke almost exclusively to Oscar, the sushi chef, for everything. We had a great conversation covering a wide range of topics and he was prompt with getting my orders ready and made sure I was taken care. If Oscar is working, I would reccomend sitting at the bar. Food: 3/5 I ordered an oyster shooter, Toro sushi, a chirashi bowl and a beer. The oyster shooter came with 2 oysters, one in a glass and one in shell. The one in the glass was a little more bitter than I would like, with the sake overwhelming any flavor the oyster, masago or pickled carrot had. The one in the shell was more balanced with the oyster tasting healthy, floral and briney, with the oyster being well cleaned with no grit. The toro, tuna belly, sushi was the highlight of the experience. It was served with real wasabi root. Maki serves its premium sushi with real wasabi. If you've never had real wasabi, it changes the flavor and experience of sushi completely. The tuna was melt in your mouth fatty, with the closest comparison to everyday food being a high grade filet mignon. The fish was never frozen and had its original texture with high notes of meaty flavor. The chirashi bowl was average and relatively unremarkable. But with the fresh wasabi, it made it very remarkable. Overall: Very good experience. The fact they care enough to use fresh wasabi for their food shows they care about the customers experience. That in and of itself would make me come back. My only complaint was the pricing, $77 pre tax, which should be expected in downtown Ventura, but it leaves me only recommending Maki sushi as an indulgence rather than a regular visit. But if you appreciate real wasabi, give it a shot. You wouldn't regret it.

I had been wanting to check out this sushi restaurant located in downtown for a while and today we finally did. After spending some time walking around downtown doing some shopping I realized it was lunch time and the perfect time to go have lunch at Masa Sushi. They have a lovely patio for outdoor dining, but my family and I felt a little chilly, so we decided to eat inside. They have some simply but cute decorations. Service was nice. Our waitress sat us down and took our order, she also made some recommendations. We ordered there lunch specials and their Y2K roll which was good. I wouldn't say it's the best sushi place but it was a lot of good for their prices. I would go back for their lunch specials.

Savory Chicken Yakisoba.

Our first time at Masa Sushi was during the holiday Wine Walk evening on Saturday, December 2nd. They sit directly adjacent to the main stage where a very loud band was playing. Dear Hubby and I were squiring around our Sweet Granddaughter (age 4) that day. She loves music and wanted to dance. Problem was, Papa was in need of a place to sit down, and there wasn't any place anywhere other than one of the restaurants. We decided to give Masa Sushi a try. Despite the challenges of the boisterous music and wine-loving crowd, we were able to sample their food and get a dash of their hospitality. I wasn't very hungry, so ended up ordering a miso soup and helping SG eat her kid's plate. It was plentiful, and she can be picky, so was only having part of what came in an assortment of flavors. DH went for the Chicken Yakisoba, which tasted as good as it looked - see photo attached. The miso soup was too salty for my preference, but everything else I tried was good. That included chicken teriyaki, side salad, and gyoza. I would like to try their sushi rolls on another visit. They feature a good-sized outdoor seating area, so we'll plan to return when it's not as hectic and enjoy a more leisurely dining experience. I give them credit for maintaining a smile and good service during what must be one of the rowdiest nights of the year.

This place has amazing lunch specials from 12-3 plus happy hour from 12-5!!! We got the delicious baked mussels from the happy hour menu and I got a sashimi lunch special and my son got the number 3. All come with miso soup and salad. The portions are huge and fresh! They also have a unique assortment of rolls that we will definitely be back for. The pleasant servers kept our green tea refilled. You can also enjoy Japanese beer and sake and watch the game on one of their big screen TVs. They also have a beautiful patio for your furry friends.

Solid Japanese resteraunt. Very happy to have this spot on Main. We have ate here a couple times and ALWAYS enjoy our meal so we love the consistency. We stopped by on a Saturday for lunch and asked to be seated outside and we got seated right away. Such a good outdoor seating area! It was so cute! Our server was very helpful and kind. After ordering or food, it was our within 10-15 minutes. We ordered the chicken yakisoba and it came out in a sizzling pan (like a fajita dish) which was super unique. Great food presentation forsure. The dish however had so much flavor and was so good! Easily would give that dish a 9 out of 10 as the only thing that could be better is the chicken flavor but still good. We ordered a fried sushi roll that had cream cheese in it and it was so good. Would rate that dish a 8 out of 10. We also go the garlic edamame which was cooked to perfection. Great flavor too. Overall I highly reccowmnd you check this spot out if your craving Japanese food. You won't regret stopping by.

So so. Didn't impress. Omakase was simply old standards, cold rice, and the sake seemed a tad off.

~ SMALL SPACE, BIG FLAVOR, A HIDDEN GEM ~…read more Gotetsu is one of those blink and you'll miss it spots, but once you're inside, you know you've found something sooo special!! Cozy, intimate, and very much a hole in the wall izakaya, this place is all about authentic Japanese flavors and perfectly grilled skewers. There is NO sushi here (they make that very clear), just kushiyaki, small plates, and goooood vibes. I've never been to Japan (yet), but I would imagine this is what it would be like walking into a small mom and pop shop there. The open kitchen is tiny but fun to watch, and from pretty much any seat you can see your food being made. It's a GREAT date night spot, order a bunch of dishes and share everything so much fun. We came for dinner and with a rotating menu of skewers and specials we were satisfied and it kept things interesting! Lunch is more limited, with preset options, but the quality still hits. The donburi is solid, the chicken curry is comforting (could use a little more protein), and the skewers, especially pork belly, chicken & onion, and meatballs, are seasoned and grilled really well. Veggie skewers like zucchini and brussels sprouts are simple but still tasty. At dinner, my husband and I loved the spicy garlic edamame, chicken thigh with yuzu pepper, ribeye skewer, gyoza, and the yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball with a crispy outside). Pro move: dip the onigiri into the leftover spicy edamame sauce. Trust. Ordering is easy with scan-and-pay, the owner is hands-on, and you can feel the care put into every dish. Take it easy with the ordering (they are typically skewer by skewer because you can easily rack up a hefty bill!) If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience in Ventura, focused on flavor, not trends, Gotetsu absolutely delivers.

Their SPICY EDAMAME is addicting! They add the perfect amount of spice and hint of sugar, highly recommend! The DUCK RAMEN was great too! Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted fresh. Loved the enoki mushrooms and yolky boiled egg. Also tried their Godzilla and KAIJUrolls- both were tasty. My husband is not a fan of kewpie mayo so we had it on the side. TIP: ORDER a side of SRIRACHA and a side of GARLIC CHILI OIL. Dipping your sushi in both of these will take your tastebuds to another level!! DRINKS: It was hard to decide between all the different choices. Millennium Falcon Fizz was delicious- reminds me of a Scooby snack, comes with a foamy top. They give you a bottle of water which is nice, but the waitress forgot to give us a refill when we asked for it. Other than that, the staff is friendly and did a good job checking on us. If you're in the area check it out!
