I came here with a friend as we both enjoy sushi. They have happy hour which has variety of items in it. So she was good and at the spicy garlic edamame was definitely a favorite. I don't recall exact roles, but one of them was lemon and it was good. I will definitely return in the near future.

Got the Sashimi Special A. Half of the options were good but the other half wasn't the best. Didn't finish a few pieces. I wouldn't come back unfortunately.

I accidentally entered through the side door, mistaking it for the front but the staff was accommodating and allowed me to choose any seat since the establishment wasn't that busy. My server was pleasant but could have been a little more engaging, though I understand her job can be challenging. The atmosphere was inviting and well-maintained. I ordered a strawberry lemonade, which was excessively sweet, reminiscent of Kool-Aid, so I only consumed a small portion otherwise I'd get a headache from the sugar. I selected the 3-item dinner and requested to substitute the California roll for a tuna roll at an additional cost, but I was informed that I could only choose three items (well). So, I accepted this and opted for teriyaki chicken, gyoza, and sashimi, which I enjoyed. While the meal was super solid, the teriyaki chicken had a burnt flavor and was tough. I attempted to finish it but ultimately left some uneaten. I guess I left quite a bit because they offered a box for leftovers, which I declined. I understand why this place is popular, but the chicken was disappointing. I have to keep it real and deduct points for the lemonade, salad, and chicken. However, the miso, rice, gyoza, and sashimi were the hit! I will return solely for the sushi on my next visit. OOOC 3.5 out of 5 Afros

Spicy heat roll, steak teriyaki, tuna belly roll and sushi pieces

Quick seating on Friday for happy hour, friendly service, food came out in less than 15 minutes and was surprisingly good quality for happy hour prices(from 8pm till closing everyday). The sushi pieces were probably best bang for your buck because the piece of fish was much bigger than the rice it was sitting on top of. The steak for the teriyaki bowl was so tender but clearly someone forgot to season it with salt before cooking it and I felt their sushi rice was slightly undercooked but still edible. The spicy heat roll was definitely spicy which I enjoyed and the tuna belly roll was bland. Overall I enjoyed the meal. Would definitely recommend.

Went during happy hour and the menu is great during that time. We started with the spicy soy beans, then had the Lemon Roll, the Memo special roll, and the Red Sun Roll. We also had some strawberriy flavored Soju. We will be back. They were friendly and attentive. For a small place they were busy on a Tuesday night. Clean place.

My son and I really like coming here for our mom son dates. Especially during happy hour. You'll find great deals at happy hour. I really like their miso soup too start and the dragon roll. If you're on a special diet like keto they have some great riceless options. Like the Cucumber roll, OMG roll, and a couple others. They're delicious. You can't tell you're missing rice. The service is pretty friendly but not consistent checking on the tables. We usually have to wave someone down for a refill or napkins. Still it's a very peaceful place to enjoy sushi with good happy hour deals.

-Baked salmon roll is so good! Love the vibe in here and how dark the lighting is. Truly gives an inviting and romantic experience. Lowkey, if you will. Quick service & seating. Everyone greets you with a smile. Definitely recommend if you are in the area.

I recommend coming for Happy hour from 8pm to close if you want to give this a try. The happy hour menu has a great selection of rolls and sashimi. The regular menu has a large selection of specialty rolls though that I recommend you give a try as well. This place does get busy and if you come during happy hour then expect to wait a little. If you can show up 15 minutes before happy hour, then that would be the best time to get a table faster. There were a lot of cooks and waiters/waitresses during this hour. They have a lot of seating available but when I went, it was all filled up. The happy hour prices are worth the wait though. I don't know anywhere else where you can get a large hot sake for $2.99. We will be back though, even if it's not happy hour. They have a lot of sushi roll and plate options in their regular menu. I also saw a lot of online orders being done too so we might do that as well.

This review is for kibo's crazy hour (every night from 8pm to close)! 5 stars for service and unreal deals! We've gone Thursday nights and usually end up with the same waitress who is so sweet and patient. She recommended her favorite roll (the memo special) to us and we're obsessed. We spent $35 on dinner and that got us drinks, appetizers, a couple rolls, AND a chicken teriyaki bowl! 4 stars for food. Solid happy hour options, with the understanding that although it's not the highest quality sushi, it's still good! I love ordering miso soup, edamame, gyoza, the memo special (spicy shrimp with tempura salmon roll!!!), the crunchy roll, an avocado roll, and an asahi or kirin with a hot sake. Tip - you can join the waitlist remotely from the Yelp app! There is usually a wait (on the Thursdays I've gone) so getting on the waitlist ahead of time is really helpful.

I just have to leave another review. Absolutely fantastic food. The space is large and roomy with an outdoor patio. The service is fast and always very friendly. The food is fresh, tasty, well spiced and large portions. I've been coming here for 8 years and never disappointed.

This is quickly becoming a favorite for my family. We love the early happy hour! I usually get my kids after school, and they will ask, "Kibo?". They have their standard order, my daughter gets the miso and 2 avocado rolls, and my son does the same except he orders 2 Philadelphia rolls. The serving size is very generous, and the ingredients are always fresh. I appreciate that the servers are kind and attentive to their needs. The place is kept dim, which can feel a bit more of an intimate setting even when just dining with my family. We have appreciated the consistency in quality and will continue to support this business.

Pomegranate soju (very very sweet) not drinkable

The sushi is good the service is not so good. Also do not get the capri soju drinks they are literally all sugar. When I asked for them to fix it they said they could only add soda which only made it even more sweet. Stick to beer here

Kibo Sushi is celebrating their 10th anniversary. It is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. Lots of room, plenty of seats at the counter are available if you want to watch the magic happen. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The menu has just about anything you might want. They have specials for lunch and dinner, and during the anniversary celebration, additional special deals for those who want to visit after 8pm!

~ SMALL SPACE, BIG FLAVOR, A HIDDEN GEM ~…read more Gotetsu is one of those blink and you'll miss it spots, but once you're inside, you know you've found something sooo special!! Cozy, intimate, and very much a hole in the wall izakaya, this place is all about authentic Japanese flavors and perfectly grilled skewers. There is NO sushi here (they make that very clear), just kushiyaki, small plates, and goooood vibes. I've never been to Japan (yet), but I would imagine this is what it would be like walking into a small mom and pop shop there. The open kitchen is tiny but fun to watch, and from pretty much any seat you can see your food being made. It's a GREAT date night spot, order a bunch of dishes and share everything so much fun. We came for dinner and with a rotating menu of skewers and specials we were satisfied and it kept things interesting! Lunch is more limited, with preset options, but the quality still hits. The donburi is solid, the chicken curry is comforting (could use a little more protein), and the skewers, especially pork belly, chicken & onion, and meatballs, are seasoned and grilled really well. Veggie skewers like zucchini and brussels sprouts are simple but still tasty. At dinner, my husband and I loved the spicy garlic edamame, chicken thigh with yuzu pepper, ribeye skewer, gyoza, and the yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball with a crispy outside). Pro move: dip the onigiri into the leftover spicy edamame sauce. Trust. Ordering is easy with scan-and-pay, the owner is hands-on, and you can feel the care put into every dish. Take it easy with the ordering (they are typically skewer by skewer because you can easily rack up a hefty bill!) If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience in Ventura, focused on flavor, not trends, Gotetsu absolutely delivers.

Feels very contemporary and not like a darker wood ambiance of more traditional Japanese sushi places. This place must generate most of their business from their super packed HH. Once 5pm hit, it got noticeably busier, and by 530pm- fully packed. Sumo is maybe one of the few places that allows takeout of their HH items because they know how crowded they get. That is generous of them. I think their prices are among the most affordable for HH sushi around this area and everything was fresh. I am not picky sushi rolls person, but I would guess their sushi quality is average, made for mass consumption and general public, not for people who really want Japan level top grade sushi/ sashimi. Service: it all depends. Most of the servers are college aged young women. So a lot of them huddle and talk during busy HH time while they constantly scan the busy entrance for new diners. It can take awhile for someone to actually come take your order; we were lucky our server was pretty sweet natured. But in general I don't get the vibe that most of the servers are very focused about their jobs. But with busy HH, warm and friendly service isn't a priority. We're here for the HH deals and fresh affordable sushi. For these points, Sumo delivers. The ambiance: modern and bright, not my first choice. I prefer more low key settings. Chicken was nice and crispy --good flavor throughout and not greasy at all! The japchae had a great balance of flavors and the shiitake mushrooms, in particular, had really great flavor--must have been marinated for a long time to soak up all the juices! The kimbap was delicious! It was fresh and the pickle in it (Japanese call it takuan, idk what its name in Korean is) was super mild. It didn't overpower the other ingredients. The bulgogi was a solid dish. It had also the glass noodles on one side and plenty of meat and veggies. A good, well-rounded dish. We ordered 5 things, 2 rolls, one meh, the cherry blossom, one expectedly good, the crunch (reliability good across all locations unless something is seriously wrong) And finally one so bad that it was sent back after my father and I tried one, the Thomason. My father ordered the chicken katsu, one worthy mention is the oiliness of this along with it being significantly more bread than chicken. Gyozas (fried) were equally oily and the sauce being entirely unflavored, in favor of more oil. Finally ambiance, leading back to the first point, it's certainly new management, as previously, the ambience was immaculate, the staff were mostly Japanese, the songs were good, and while the seating was certainly cramped, it felt natural in a very Japanese way. Now the previously mentioned tight-quarters is quite glaring, as the music is the classic mix of pop and rock that fills places with no identity, the staff are mostly Mexican, and while I have nothing against that, its quite weird to be in a Japanese restaurant listening to Spanish. Unfortunately I am one who reviews only when something extremely interesting happens with the food and location, and the interesting happenstance at this restaurant is how much it is not worth your time or money anymore.
