Would say this spot is a whole experience you just have to savor. We went on a Saturday at 7pm and had to wait almost an hour for a party of 2 (which we didn't mind). We weren't in a rush so we grabbed a drink in the outdoor bar area and then were seated at the indoor bar area for dinner. Food and drinks were great - especially for a bar imo. Right off the bat, the host was maybe the friendliest host I've ever encountered. There was about a 20 minute wait on a Friday evening, so we grabbed some cocktails from the bar while we waited. The cocktails were tasty and about the average price for a bougie LA drink. The menu didn't have an allergy key, so I asked the waitress to help find some gluten and dairy-free items to eat. She helped guide me, and then a few minutes later, the chef came to our table to go over the menu more thoroughly. And he came back several times throughout our meal to check in and confirm that what I was ordering was safe. My friends and I felt so taken care of! They even made a special dessert for me! We had really high hopes Coming here, unfortunately they were not met. We waited 2 hours and 15 minutes for a table which maybe we are the idiots for even waiting that long. We ordered drinks while we waited but were told that they do not offer Tito's but then when we finally sat down inside we were told they do. Not one item of our food actually came out hot even though everything tasted good, our fish was undercooked and still pink. I will say our server did their best, but a comped round of drinks and dessert wasn't enough to fix an already unfortunate experience. This place is a gem, and obviously not a secret. No reservations, we waited 20 mins outside on a Wed night, but were served drinks with bench seats & standing tables there. When we got into the cozy candlelit bar the excellent service continued, capped off by chef Jeff himself running some of the plates to us. He was so quiet & unassuming, that it's only because my son recognized him that we had the pleasure of him talking - about the food of course. He's as exceptional as his creations. I remember the place being a cozy little neighborhood spot & instead was greeted by the pretentious host & her iPad who proceeded to tell me there would be a wait to be seated, which is no problem, except for the part where she had numerous open tables & open seats at the bar. I still told her I would wait for a table & asked if I could get a drink from the bar while I waited. Her response was she would bring me a drink while I waited outside. Used to come here in the 90s when it was 'The Oyster Bar'. Loved the clam chowder and Mai Tais. Now it's back - same dark and divey vibe, but with hipster cocktails and foodie fare (and prices). Our drinks (Old Fashioned and Mojito) were excellent, but $34 for two cocktails... whoa! Didn't try the food but it looked really good. Such pleasant, welcoming, attentive staff - we didn't want to leave. Kudos to management for hiring this crew. Came here at the start of a birthday food crawl: Crispy Potatoes Pickle Bento Box Spicy Noodz This place came highly recommended, and we didn't think Oy Bar missed the hype. The potatoes felt like fried-over potato skins, so they were a cool texture - somewhere between skins and potato wedges. The pickled veggies in the Bento Box ended up being an effective transition between the wedges and the spicy noodles. They were a tad on the salty side (can't be that surprised about salty, pickled veggies...the batches can vary a bit), but they ended up working a bit more in the Spicy Noodz plate. The Noodz themselves were good enough while tasting fairly starchy. We largely were fine with Oy Bar. The atmosphere was really chill and Jazzy for a Saturday evening. Their seasonal, rotating menus seem like a good excuse for making multiple visits in a span of a few months. There's a chef designing and executing in the back of house, and we have good attitudes about trying some new takes on Japanese/Jewish deli fusion bites. read more

After months of hearing a coworker rave about this bar, my colleagues and I were finally able to try it for one of our birthdays! While we had to really plan ahead for this, since it is after all a bar and not a restaurant, I think OyBar truly blew it out of the water, making a fan out of me! I think the best part of this experience was the service. I'm going to spend time on this because OyBar's service alone deserves 5+ stars! The staff at OyBar was fantastic at accommodating our large party of about 20! They were able to set up tables outside to seat all of us, and to make things easier (since, again, this isn't a restaurant-restaurant), the easiest way was for them to set us up with a faux prix fixe menu. (We basically ordered a bunch of their dishes ahead of time, and they brought enough plates for groups of 6ish to share. (Hopefully this makes sense, haha!) Now, let's talk food. If you're like me, and don't really drink alcohol, they have plenty of food (and vegetarian options!) that you MUST order! Although, I think their menu changes from time to time, if you see the following, do yourself a favor and order it: -Crispy Potatoes (if you had to order just one dish...this is the one. Trust me. You're welcome.) -Miso Garlic Lettuces (don't let the name fool you!) -Pickle Bento (also do not let THIS name fool you. Wow! What a terrible place! I feel like this is a classic 'Emperor has no clothes' experience. There is nothing redeeming about Oy Bar. Both the host and hostess were rude beyond even Beverly Hills standards. The owner/chef is ridiculously anti customer. Which may have been worth it had the food been amazing. Sadly no. Of the two orders of crispy potatoes, one was excellent; the other, meh. None of our meals were good. Maybe be was the worst!!! I actually came here specifically to get the Reuben quesadilla- it sounded amazing- what I got was an overcooked dry disk that tasted like it was cheese grilled over two pieces of cardboard. We ordered cocktails while we perused the menu. The best way I can describe the menu is "Jewish Fusion". We decided to share everything so we ordered the pickled bento box, the everything onigiri rolls. The pastrami quesadilla and lastly the margarita scallop ceviche. Good lord!! First off, the pickled bento box had the best slaw I've ever had. And the 15 minute pickle was pretty spectacular. The onigiri roll was so cool. Rice rolled in everything bagel spice topped with delicious salmon. But the star was the margarita ceviche. I'm not a fan of scallops but this rocked my world!! Unique, fresh, playful! I was happy to call it quits here but was told I was a psychopath if I didn't try Chef Jeff's burger!! Fine. Ya, ok they were right. I'd say the burger is in my top 5 burgers I've ever had. And those delicious crunchy potato nuggets were pretty great too! Looking for something to critique I jumped on the fact there's no coffee service. After having a lively discussion with Chef Jeff, I quickly understood. This man will not do anything half as@ed! Until he can figure out how to do coffee perfectly, he won't! Our absolute favorite new place! Drinks are absolutely delicious (seriously all of them) and so far we've tried the potatoes (So crispy and delicious! Get them with the tomato chutney), the pastrami quesadilla (BRO), and the Oy Burger (Complex and flavorful). Waiters are incredible, vibe is friendly and dive-y, but yet very swanky and nice. What a disappointment this restaurant was. We were big fans when it was the Oyster House and decided to give it a try on a Saturday night. The restaurant opens at 6PM. We get there and there is a line on the sidewalk after 6:15. They were letting people in a few at a time to "not overwhelm" the kitchen staff. We finally made the cut and the first thing we noticed was the bad smell of Lysol. The restaurant was very dark and the tables did not have tablecloths. They immediately offered us the bar for dinner and we said we wanted a table. After much consternation, the staff moved two tables together to seat our party of 3. The menu was lackluster and a weird combination of food. They had a cheeseburger and Dom Buri which is a Japanese dish. That was it. We asked for a chardonnay and were informed they didn't have one. We asked for a dry red wine and they didn't have one. We ordered what they recommended and one member of our party was poured wine and not offered to approve the glass. We went to the OyBar last night and came away impressed with the overall value proposition of the place. For anyone that isn't familiar with the San Fernando Valley, the OyBar took over the space once held by the Oyster House on the corner of Colfax and Moorpark and they paid homage to its roots by moving the old sign inside behind the bar. It was a hold-in-the-wall to put it politely and OyBar has managed to keep some of that ambiance, but updating it in a very light way to not move too far away from what made the Oyster House such a popular location for the valley locals. From their lighting design to their use of the space, it feels like a hipper version of the neighborhood bar. Upon entering the bar, you do notice how dimly lit the space is. For me, I feel like they missed on the lighting design as it was a little too dark for it to be an effective dining space. It was hard to read the menu without turning on the flashlight of my phone and that was a missed design choice, because the menu was small and extremely detailed one would need light to really understand what they're ordering. Once I was able to see the menu, I noticed a noticeable Asian theme to their tradition bar food choices. The use of traditional Asian ingredients such as miso, salmon on the smoked salmon onigiri, to their Japanese style chicken, which was not available, the chef's take on the menu was enjoyable with only a few noticeable misses. The Miso Garlic Lettuce, as many of commented was light and balanced albeit a salad with a miso dressing. The crispy potatoes was both crispy and hot and the sauces offered a mixture of both sweet and spicy and it went well with a large pint of Sapporo. The rest of us got the Oy Burger for our main entree. The patty was cooked to a medium to medium well temperature. The meat was flavorful with subtle hints of spice. The accompaniments however was a little unbalanced. I did not take the cilantro and wished the cucumber had been pickled. I think the sourness of a pickled cucumber mixed with the sweet and savoriness of the Hoisin Ketchup would have been nice. The Toma cheese kind of disappeared from the dish which was a disappointment, but it did add another layer of texture which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the sesame bun didn't do much for me. It felt oddly wrong sized for the burger where I ended up with more bun than the patty and that for me would be the cardinal sin of making this a great burger. However, the overall vibe of OyBar was very cool. It's a good place to meet up for drinks and not too loud that you can't take a date here. Parking is a plenty with both street parking and lot parking behind the bar. I think they need to revisit their lighting design and make it a little easier to see, if only during dining hours or even in the restroom where it was hard to see the toilet. Overall, I would definitely recommend OyBar as a great place to meet in the valley. read more

I tried OY bar for the first time and was very impressed. Keep in mind this place does not take reservations so be prepared for a wait if you come a busy time. We stopped by at 7pm on Saturday night with a group of 5 people and waited about 30 minutes to be seated. We did order drinks while we waited and the chief even came by with tasters like pickles and crispy potato bites. Most foods on the menu have a deli spin to them, like the pickle bento box, Ruben quesadilla, and matzo ball ramen. According to friends this place frequently ranks on foodie lists for its burger. It was difficult to chose an entrée because I was torn between the highly recommended burger and the unique matzo ball ramen. I ended up picking the matzo ball ramen because I figured I would not get that anywhere else. Someone else in our party ordered the burger and I had a piece and admittedly it was probably the best option between the two. The noodles in the ramen were excellent and I really like the mushroom and matzo ball, but the broth wasn't quite as rich and thick as I would have preferred. The burger was herby and juicy and absolutely lived up to the hype. They have a rotating dessert as well that seemed tempting but we were already full from dinner.
