I ordered the fajita salad with shrimp. I got the salad dressing on the side but didn't end up using it. It was flavorful without it and didn't need it. I enjoyed it! They serve it with a generous portion of shrimp and the grilled veggies were a nice addition to the salad. You also still get complimentary chips & salsa. They were pretty good! We sat outside in the beautiful new patio area, which features a lovely water fountain, gorgeous Mexican tile, & stunning furniture. We started with a complementary basket of warm, fresh chips and a very spicy salsa, along with a side of freshly made guacamole that was incredibly creamy and flavorful. Unfortunately, the meal went downhill from there. This famous restaurant has a rich history--helped made famous by actor Marlon Brando and even featured in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood--so my expectations were high. We ordered a Carne Asada wet burrito with chicken added. When it arrived, it was incredibly soggy, and the chicken inside had a watery texture & the steak was extremely overcooked. We flagged down our waiter, who was very polite and understanding, and asked to exchange it for a burrito with grilled chicken breast instead of the wet chicken. While the second burrito was an improvement, the beef was still very overcooked and underseasoned, and the chicken completely lacked flavor. The drinks were also a letdown. We started with a guava drink that had literally no alcohol in it and tasted like watered-down lemonade with no guava flavor at all. We had to order a second drink and a beer just to get something decent. Our bill came out to a whopping $98. For that price, the portions were painfully small, and you can definitely find better quality elsewhere. Also service was painfully slow...While I appreciate how clean the restaurant was and how sweet our waiter was, the only thing that truly stood out was the fresh guacamole. Because they had no reservations until late in the evening, we took a 4:00 (!) dinner reservation. The place was maybe 40% occupied. The service was good, the food was just ok. We came here for our first date nearly 40 years ago, and we've been back many times since. The food was just not great this time around. I have countless wonderful memories here, including moments when Ray Vega himself would stop by our table for a friendly chat. However, after a two-year absence, my recent visit to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom was disappointing. We arrived in the late afternoon, hoping to avoid the crowds, and put our name down. Unfortunately, after waiting 30 minutes for an update, we discovered that our name hadn't even been recorded. Once we were finally seated, there was a significant delay in receiving our drinks and chips. I noticed one server struggling, dropping food for different tables, which was unfortunate. To add to our frustrations, they forgot our tostada Chiquita, which was later brought out with our main dishes. I ordered carne asada with cheese enchiladas and chile relleno, but the meal lacked the flavor I remembered. The service was inconsistent; they continually forgot our drinks and chips. Honestly, what is all the fuss about? Why so many negative reviews about this place? I have been here twice before, many years ago. Tonight was my third time dining here since my son and I decided to go out for dinner. It really hit the spot after not having Mexican food for a very long time. We walked in on a Friday night with no reservations and were seated immediately, even though the restaurant was already busy and they still had many reservations coming in. I was very uncomfortable and didn't like the corner table we were given at first, but Patrick was able to accommodate us right away and gave us a new table that was much better. Jorge was our server and he was cordial and professional. You can tell he knows his job and the menu well. Johnathan brought our food and kindly took our pictures for us. The complimentary chips and salsa came out first and I will agree with other reviews that the chips were kind of stale. The salsa was delicious. I ordered the Lobster Enchiladas that came with a Tomatillo Sauce, rice/refried beans and a side of sour cream & guacamole ($32). It was absolutely delicious and a very filling portion. I asked for light sauce and got exactly that. They also didn't skimp on the amount of lobster. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and barely have any leftovers for tomorrow. My son ordered the Pollo Asado plate and although he liked it, he said he wouldn't have ordered it if he knew it was going to be a bone-in half chicken plate. It doesn't say that on the menu. His also came with a tomatillo sauce, rice/beans and a side of sour cream/guacamole, with 3 corn tortillas. ($30) You can always ask for flour as well. They have a full bar here and the drinks are EXCELLENT! I had a Frozen Coconut Margarita ($18) which was PERFECTION!!! So silky, smooth, DELICIOUS! I was about to lick the glass clean. My son had the Guava Margarita ($18) and loved it as well. Very well balanced and I also thought it was great and I don't even like Guava. Again, I don't know why there are so many bad reviews! Well, I was very lucky. The service is always incredible here and Xavier is an amazing server. I've been a server for a long time, but I gotta tell you that server is one of the best the steak burrito was beyond delicious I can't believe I ate the whole thing. I won't be eating any more meals for another 12 hours, but it was so delicious the melted cheese, the sauce, and of course, the sour cream and guacamole. This was my first time here in almost 25 years and I'll def be back. The tableside guacamole is a must, and the spinach enchiladas were delish. I'm normally more of a carnivore, but the veg was calling to me that day and did not disappoint, haha. The spicy marg was too sweet and not all that spicy, IMO. I wouldn't get that again. Came here to have dinner. They were doing a soft open for the patio area. I will say this patio area is very nice. It has a great vibe. That is the only thing nice I have to say about this place. The service really sucks. The waiter never really checked on us and if we asked for water or something. Got a crappy face look from the staff. They look so miserable. I witnessed a lovely older couple who the lady ordered a taco. There was a bug in her food and when they brought a new one out, it was completely wrong. They brought her beef when she originally had chicken. I felt bad because she did not even eat, and they still didn't even offered to pay for the husband's dish or take care of the food. Then another table next to me, they brought the burrito and the other lady ordered a salad and never brought the other ladies dish. I would never come back. I don't know what is happening! This was my favorite restaurant for the last 20 years. So, many things have changed. The beans is one of them. They also don't have melted cheese on top! The rice used to have tons of sauce on top that was my fave. It was also dry, hard and flavorless. Worst of all they were all served cold!!! Then when he finally came back he got me the wrong drink! He actually acted like I changed my order. If that wasn't weird enough, he also got my food order wrong. In what world does shredded beef sound like chicken? Again, I said, that's not what I ordered. He looked on his machine and read back what he had input. He had input my order wrong! But I had a bad experience (it was the company, not the actual restaurant), so I didn't feel like reviewing it, it wasn't fair. We went there last week for dinner since we had a friend visiting from East Coast and he's a fan of the movie. He had to eat here! I am glad we did. We enjoyed the night out way more! Nice, dark lit restaurant, old school booths and charming cool paintings on the wall. It does have atmosphere, no TV (Yeyyy). Valet parking or street parking if you're lucky! It is small (restrooms included), but it has a nice vibe, you feel immersed in the past. We had a nice waiter, kind, attentive, super sweet and helpful! Great service and wonderful chips and salsa from the house and a water carafe. We tried their house margarita on the rocks and boy it's great! Amazing and you get a small silver container for a refill! The folks from the bar were loud, otherwise it's fun to hang out here and chat with friends over old school Mexican fare. Taco-s are decent, so were the rancheras enchiladas, nothing exceptional and prices are high. But it's worth checking it out and coming here once in a while. Did this place change owners?? We've been coming here for 14 years and we drive 35 minutes to get here. My wife and I had our first date here all those years ago and this place has remained a favorite of ours. Unfortunately, it's no longer the same. Something's changed. All the recent reviews seem to share the same sentiment. It's not good for Casa Vega. We came on May 9, 2026 at 12:30 in the afternoon and they were having customers who didn't have reservations wait to be seated. The place was empty and there was no reason for it. In a couple cases, they told "oversize" parties (party of eight) that their wait was 45 minutes. Again, the place was empty (except the patio which the host said was full). But the inside, maybe 8 table tables total were seated. So I have no clue why they were making anyone sit for any period of time. Seemed unnecessary. They've always had fountain drinks so I ordered a soft drink expecting that.. The waiter brings me a small glass bottle of Diet Coke. I asked him if they had fountain drinks and he said not anymore. They charged almost $4 for this small bottle too. That's ridiculous. So no more refills unless you want to pay more money. The glasses they give for water are now the size of an oversized shot glass. It's a 5oz glass. They leave a medium size bottle of water at the table and it's maybe enough to fill 6 of these cups. So dumb. As we're sitting, waiting for our food, a typical LA homeless person walks in and walks around the restaurant. That was cool. They make actual customers wait when it's empty inside but they allow this filth ball to walk in and walk around, uninterrupted. Another change: Chips. They've always served unlimited chips. Not anymore. Now they charge after the second basket. Our food took FOREVER to be brought to us. Cole to a half hour. During this time we went through two baskets of chips. Which by the way are also served in what feels like a smaller basket than what they used to use. And the amount of salsa they give has been cut in half. Since our food was taking FOREVER and we scarfed down the first two baskets, I requested a third at which point the waiter told me there is a charge for all baskets of chips after the second basket. This is just starting to feel like a money grab now. I heard the parties seating around us order ordering drinks from the bar and they took forever to be served as well. The food itself was nothing to brag about either.. Not as good as it used to be. But I will give them credit for going back to the larger size burrito. At least that's what we experienced this visit. For a while after Covid, their burritos shrank in size so they must've got the message on that complaint, unless it was just a one off that we got a large larger size burrito this trip. That is the only positive thing I have to say. The Carne Asada steak felt rubbery and like low quality. The rice and beans were definitely overcooked. You might think that all of this is a result of the times. Maybe they're struggling etc....But you can't even get into this place without a reservation 7 nights a week because it's packed full every night of the week. We got there around 1pm the food and drinks were spot on my kids loved the food and atmosphere. The service was fantastic our waiter was very friendly and attentive. I'd heard about Casa Vega, and even as a city local, passed it a few times knowing I'd eventually attend and it did not disappoint. I met a few colleagues here for a Friday work lunch, and we enjoyed ourselves. It has a dimly lit ambiance to the spot so I venture to guess it's great for intimate conversations when dining. There was some nice musical tunes in the background not too loud so you could hear it but also carry on conversation too. From a culinary standpoint we started with the table side guacamole and margaritas, how can you go wrong there? I went with the CV Spicy Margarita. For lunch I was set on getting an enchilada but the debate was between Crab & Shrimp or the Lobster....and I went with the Lobster enchilada. One of the most disappointing dining experiences in recent memory. Had a reservation but was seated at an unset table. Took more than an hour to get our food, and when it did arrive, it was cold. A manager came over to offer free desert for our long wait, but was rude when we inquired about comping 2 margaritas instead (he refused). The margaritas were good. I used to roll by this place often when I worked in the valley and I had no idea it had such a rich history of Hollywood's who's-who that would pop in here. All kinds of chisme! Read up on it when you get a chance. On to the review... Valet is efficient and reasonable in price. Reservations are recommended as even at 5 o'clock it was pretty busy on a Saturday. The menu is huge! Lots to choose from including vegetarian options. I chose the carne asada with enchilada combo. Steak is cooked to your liking and it's a great cut of meat! They also have a huge drink selection...if you can't decide, the classic margarita will not disappoint. The first sip might have saying "meh"...but when you finish it, you'll be smiling from the buzz you wanted. Compliments to the bartender. No time for dessert so I'll skip that. My only critique...is that the food could have a bit more spice. I probably could have requested some extra hot salsa but no biggie. That's just me. Other than that I love the decore of the place and energy of the staff! I would definitely come back a few more times to get at some other dishes on the menu. Oh Casa Vega we loved you. Well where do I begin? I had gotten a reservation for 8:30pm on a Saturday for 3. The gents and I like to come here for the decent portions and the magical margaritas whilst sitting and being in an LA legendary watering hole. However this time it was different. Upon arrival we valeted which was $10. I was kind of taken back but... okay this is Casa Vega good times are ahead right? We arrive roughly 6 minutes late but we were seated at table 30 which is the first table next to the restrooms. Okay thats okay. Upon sitting we were given menus. The food runner or bus boy took our drink order and brought back chips and salsa. Here we waited for 25mins. During the wait our table side guacamole was prepared. Finally between the 25-30min mark our drinks came. I had asked the front hostess to see if we could move to a better suited section that was getting more attention but it was full. So we powered on. After I noted the slow service it took another almost 15min before our food order was taken. Then shortly after our food came within 5-7 mins after ordering. This is when the hostess came back to let us know the guac and 50% of the first drinks had been comped due to the lack of service. This was thoughtful and a nice gesture. Although all that had already occurred the food well... it was definitely showing changes. Michelada - This was alright. It wasnt too lemony and was barely on par for a michelada. House Margarita - In my 20 years of enjoying margaritas this was definitely top 3 worst of all time. They used to be good and solid. This time around the ingredients changed. I felt like the lime / lemon juice used was more lemonade like. Total let down. Carne Asada Tacos - I used to get a combo plate of either 2 or 3 items. The carne asada tacos used to be packed with carne and pico. Now we're barely getting a few bits of carne and pico to fill out the taco. Rice and Beans - I swear honestly they had more flavor and the sauce that topped the rice was more flavorful. This time very bland and missing something. Everything was off. That's how loyal we've been to this establishment and why this is so frustrating to write. Over the past several years, nostalgia has continued to bring us back. We took a hiatus in 2023 and 2024 because of how inconsistent things had become. Then in 2025, after a company dinner, I was genuinely impressed and thought Casa Vega had made a comeback. On January 6, 2026, I had one of the best carnitas plates I've ever had there. But fast forward to March, and again today, it was a completely different experience. The food was bland and lacked the flavor and quality we remembered. The service was also poor, slow, inattentive, and lacking the hospitality that used to define the place. It's frustrating because Casa Vega clearly still can be great, but the inconsistency makes it hard to rely on. At this point, it feels like it's running more on nostalgia than execution. First, if you are having a birthday dinner or lunch, do not bring your own birthday cake! They will not serve it. I have never encountered this before in my 70 years of birthday celebrations at restaurants. Also, their food is mediocre at best. 2 beef tacos, rice and beans for $25! CASA VEGA DO BETTER! This was my hang back in the day. So many fun memories and good food. Decided to start coming back and how disappointing this has become. The food you see in the photos in reviews, is no more. They switched out to small designer plates to make it look like you are getting something but you're not. Small rectangular plate with a bland beef taco and small chicken enchilada with barely any chicken. Then a side round plate with two tablespoons of horrible beans with three shreds of cheese not melted. Two tablespoons of clumped dry rice, no flavor on any of the food. All seems frozen or pre made and sitting in refrigerator. Food is not cooked, comes out cold. They bring it in under 5 minutes so there you go. The food isn't melded together like when it was on the big plates and they actually gave you food. The toasted coconut margarita doesn't taste fresh, with the lime. The rim used to be packed with toasted shredded coconut, this last time I literally had two shreds of coconut on my glass! It used to taste so good. Bummer. The Chiquita salad used to be best thing ever with the beets and vinegar dressing, now it has no taste. We ordered table side guacamole and while that was good, it was such a small amount I needed a booster seat to find it in the huge bowl they serve it in. And the flour chips that came with it were inedible, like a chew toy. The two item combo was 28.00, salad was around 15.00, table side guacamole 20.00, margarita 20.00. Driven by this "iconic" place dozens of times. Finally stopped by on a weeknight. Waited at the hostess stand for five minutes or so before someone came and seated us. Literally didn't see anyone for five minutes. When seated looked at the standard menu of classic Mexican food. We were beyond shocked when my enchiladas were frozen in the middle. Yes frozen. This is one of those really cool restaurants that has been there forever. Even though we live about 45 minutes away, we have to visit a few times a year. They have valet parking that cost $10, or you can find your own parking nearby, but it is Ventura Blvd so that can be tough. Save yourself the frustration and pay the money and valet. They decorate for the holidays and boy do they go over the top. This place has a great vibe, and you are made to feel like you are part of a family there. The service is always first class. The cocktails are outstanding, and we always enjoy the chips and salsa. The food is not the best you will ever have but is still very good and with the whole vibe and package you get, it is definitely worth 5 stars and a visit.
