Chilling
Anton F.

A small bar with several beers and cheap cocktails in the Valley Village are on Riverside. A pool table, stool seating at the bar and low lounge chairs, there are options. Haven't been here a few times, I stick to beers. A chill low key spot with quick and easy severer.

Definitely a locals bar, but staff and regulars are all so welcoming. Plenty of bar seats including room for bigger parties and/or intimate dates in their lounge area. Divey is my vibe and this is it. Clean restrooms is a huge plus. New to the area and may have found my new local bar!

This is a great local bar especially when Naomi or Seana are working. They are super friendly, attentive, and mix some great cocktails. They have craft cocktails, beer and a shot specials, and whiskey flights, that I really appreciate. The vibe is chill, they have a jukebox, pool table and plenty of tv's if you are there to catch a game with friends. Definitely check them out!

This place rules. If you love a dive bar this is the spot. This place isn't fancy and that's why it's great.

Chimneysweep is back…read more Sweeping it's way back into the local valley bar lounge life off the corner of Woodman Avenue & Moorpark Avenue from 5pm to close daily. This 1965 established San Fernando Valley spot is a good time, with an jukebox, classic cocktails, tons of good seating, a nice patio, easy-going bartenders, darts and more. They were under an updating period and were closed for a bit, it doesn't seem like much changed if anything, but I know locals and passers through are grateful for this 60 year old dive lounge bar. They still have limited parking in a shared plaza lot, but you can get lucky here, on the street, metered off Woodman, less restrictions on residential streets. Full bar, including wine and a super variety of beers from craft to imported to domestic. See their too cool for school beer menu chalkboard with the latest and greatest each month. Ask about their seasonal brews. Enjoy seating via couches, booths and/or chairs. Cozy and the dim lighting is intimate and never too much of an adjustment from the light outside. They do card everyone, even this almost forty year old with my youthfulness lol. Stopped in for the first time in a long time for a nightcap with some colleagues - a nice peanut butter whiskey coke, cheers and great tunes + music videos on their awesome flatscreens throughout. Chimneysweep is very much a locals bar, but they are truly kind to any and all. They've hosted birthdays, paint and drink nights, karaoke and even are filming friendly supporting creatives in LA. Restrooms are clean and rideshare is easy for when you call it a night as well as arrive #DrinkResponsibly It's great prices, cool divey vibes and classic SFV times. They…read morehave a tiki marketplace several times a year, and this one was held on a Sunday afternoon from noon to 6pm. It takes place mostly in their rear patio area and parking lot, but a good number of vendors were also in an adjacent air conditioned event room. They have a very small parking lot, but it was occupied by vendors during this event. Do not park in the parking lots of the adjacent businesses, as we were warned when entering the Tonga Hut that cars get towed regularly. There's plenty of street parking in the nearby neighborhood. Entering from the rear, there is a good sized covered patio with around eight benches. We went inside to check it out and grab a drink. The interior is fairly small with four good sized booths, a lounge area with a large J-shaped couch with several small tables, and around ten seats at the bar. It is dimly lit with some basic tiki décor, and has an old-school feel. They had a fixed cocktail menu for this event which is understandable. We stood in line at the bar for about ten minutes, got our drinks and went out to the patio. The bartender was friendly, and didn't seem flustered by the high volume of patrons. I had the Horned Beast O' The Celtic Sea (Oceanus Hibernicus Irish Malt, Jamacian Rum, House Made Falernum & Orgeat, Peach, Citrus, Dash of Cherry Heering, $13). She had the Leprechaun Grog (Three Rums, Lime, Grapefruit, Honey, Spice, Soda, $14). Both drinks were good, were served in souvenir plastic cups, and were a bargain at $13 to $14. If you ordered a drink containing Oceanus whiskey, the bartender gave you a gold coin and you could exchange it with the Oceanus representative on the patio for a free T-shirt. Durango Tacos was setup near the rear entrance for food. We had four tacos (two carne asada and two veggie), and they were good and reasonably priced. This was the first tiki marketplace we have attended. There were around twenty vendors with a good assortment of art work, tiki mugs, tiki clothing, tiki décor, and other miscellaneous items. I purchased a few nice tiki shirts which were a steal at $20 and $25. The vendors and visitors were all very friendly and in a festive mood. We hung out for about ninety minutes and had a good time. We will return at some point to try their regular cocktail menu and see what it's like on a non-event night.

Tonga hut is my favorite local tiki bar, but it is such a hit or miss when I go!…read more On a weekend, you could easily walk in with no problem or be hit with a one-hour wait. Sometimes they have servers, other times you order at the bar. The last time I went, there was a long line as only one bartender was making drinks, yikes! Despite that, the drinks are solid, reasonably priced, and strong! They have a variety of drinks and nightly specials. Each bartender also has their own "secret menu" specials that only they can make. The decor is very on theme, and they have a fire pit and heaters outside for when it is chilly.

We grabbed two spots at the bar and had wonderful service from Francis and friends. It was greta to see their banter and Francis experimenting with some cocktails. Throughout the evening, I enjoyed the Szechuan Negroni ($20), though it could have had more of the sichuan kick to it, the Bitter Cowboy ($18), and a spicy mezcal-based 'bartender's choice' ($18). JIm G. enjoyed the What's Up Doc? ($18), whiuch was mezcal, aperol, carrot-shrub, and lime. The Cured Salmon Yaki Onigiri was tasty ($9/piece), with creme friache, red onion, dill, miso butter, and everythign spice. We also greatly enjoyed the infamous Wagyu Pastrami Quesadilla ($22). For a birthday treat, we had to get dessert and ordered the carrot cake ($18). While it was pretty pricey, it was also crazy good! Fun spot with good energy, great service, and, at least on a weeknight, easy street parking in front with no meters!

I decided to take myself out on a solo date after a stressful few weeks and had been really excited…read moreto try Oi Bar. It's super close to me, parking wasn't too difficult, and the space delivered immediately -- dim red lighting, cozy and moody, perfect for a night out solo. They had a Passover specials menu that looked amazing. I was tempted by the open-faced Hillel sandwich with matzo, wasabi butter, apple, wine reduction, and pine nuts. The smoked brisket with Coca-Cola curry also looked great when it came out for the couple next to me -- until I overheard them say the meat was tough and they sent it back. That helped me decide. I started with the freezer martini, ordered with both a twist and an olive. Clean, cold, and exactly what I wanted. I almost ordered a second. For my first dish I ordered the saag burrata -- Indian-spiced creamed spinach with burrata and grilled baguette. Fantastic. The burrata was cool and creamy, the spiced spinach underneath was warm and deeply flavorful. My only note was the bread -- three very thin slices felt skimpy for the amount of dip. A couple more would've balanced it perfectly. For my main I ordered the OG burger, mostly because I'm a horseradish lover and was excited about the horseradish crème fraîche. About two bites in I noticed it was extremely rare -- and I'm someone who appreciates medium rare, but this was beyond that. I let the server know, he handled it graciously, apologized, and had it remade quickly. I appreciated that. He also ended up comping it, which I genuinely wasn't expecting and went a long way. At that point I was finishing my martini and ready to head home, so I took the burger to go. The next day I reheated it -- bun on, everything still on it, minute and twenty seconds in direct heat. The outside was noticeably darker and crispier than the first one, clearly cooked harder this time. The flavors were there. I added a little hot sauce and it was working -- until I got to the middle. Still raw. Chewy in a way that wasn't medium rare, wasn't even close. As a chef I know what a burger should feel like after that much heat. The fact that it reheated to piping hot on the outside and was still raw in the center tells me the issue was in how it was formed or how thick it was packed -- and I have the pictures to prove it. I'll be honest -- it didn't stop me from wanting to go back. It just means I'm never ordering the burger again, which genuinely makes me sad because the flavor profile was there. The horseradish could've been punchier and the pickled onion more present, but the bones of the dish were good. It just couldn't execute consistently, twice. What I know is that OyBar has something. The creativity is real, the vibe is real, the saag burrata alone is worth the trip. I wish I tried out the the Oy burger with hoisin ketchup and Dijon -- that sounds more like what I was looking for. And I already told a friend we need to come back to share a few dishes because the menu feels like it's built for that. Highlights: Freezer martini, saag burrata, moody atmosphere, creative progressive menu, server handled a tough situation with genuine grace Could improve: Burger temperature consistency (twice is a pattern, not a mistake), bread portion with the burrata, stronger horseradish presence
