Good brunch place where the pancakes are the size of pizzas. Seriously, if you need to take your pancakes to go, you'll get pizza boxes to take them with you. Oy! stands for "overindulgent yumminess" and specializes in brunch or lunch dishes. Choose from omelets, breakfast sandwiches, challah in French toast casserole, or challah in souffle. The pancakes come in two sizes - 7" and 14". I made the fortunate mistake of thinking that those numbers referred to the diameter of the pancake. Wrong, it's the radius of the pancake. Not feeling breakfast? You can order burgers, sandwiches, salads, home fries, or Haagen Dazs milkshakes.
Location/Parking: Oy! is located on Cumberland Parkway south of the Paces Ferry Road exit off of I-285. Drive a bit south past the Publix shopping plaza and Oy! will be located in a strip mall up a hill on the right. There's a pretty big sign for the strip mall. The parking lot is medium sized.
Ordering Experience: The server was very friendly and the food came out promptly. Definitely no complaints about service.
What I Tried:
Three 7" Pancakes - Unless you regularly win eating competitions, I'd recommend ordering only one or two pancakes. They're not bad, they just each take up an entire plate. I ordered the Cinna-Yum pancake, the Oreo pancake, and the Turtle pancake that was the special of the day. The Turtle pancake had chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, and nuts on top. It was the densest of my three pancakes and was very filling on its own. The Cinna-Yum pancake comes with pecans, cinnamon, and cream cheese icing. I would say it was the "plainest" of the specialty pancakes I had, but at the same time the cream cheese icing was excellent and worthy of also topping a carrot cake. I liked the Oreo pancake the most. There are crumbled Oreos on top and a lot of crushed Oreos within the pancake itself. The whipped cream is icing on the pancake - it's a super cool concept if you ask me. If you only choose one pancake (which I recommend if you want to try other things too), I'd pick the Oreo one.
Potato Latkes (3, $5.99) - Much smaller than the pancakes. The latkes were fried golden brown - almost too brown - and came with a side of applesauce and sour cream. Neither mushy nor crunchy, I'd dip the latkes into either the applesauce or the sour cream before eating. If you want more, they're sold in orders of 6.
Macaroni and Cheese (Assorted Prices Based on Toppings) - I tried a bite of my friend's macaroni and cheese. It's rich, generous with toppings if you choose to add them, and very tasty. At the same time, it can probably feed 2-3 people on its own. Everything at Oy! is gigantic.
Verdict: Latkes were just okay. Macaroni and cheese was delicious. While the pancakes could have been fluffier, I was impressed by the creativity of the pancake choices. You definitely need to try the Oreo pancake. Also, the novelty of carrying your leftover pancakes out in a pizza box is cool. Four stars considering good food, great service, and giant portion sizes. read more
