We used to frequent the Smithfield, NC Outback Steakhouse several years back and it was just OK. We hadn't tried it in a while so for Linda's birthday yesterday, I took her shopping and then dinner at Outback. What a pleasantly surprising change! It was a WOW! Every employee in the restaurant was friendly and engaging and our server, Serenity, was absolutely top shelf. All the chefs, AL, Dee, Jordan and Alexis B were all on their "A" game because our delicious food could not have been any better. The owner/partner Fred stopped by to say hello, which always a nice touch. He said he really concentrates on adding staff with the ability to do the job, but with personality. They're like the family you see in a "Mom N Pop" restaurant. We noticed they all pull together and help each other out, making the dining customer the priority. Smelled stale inside, waitress was polite but scattered and kept disappearing. My food was mediocre and mashed potatoes weee warm but not hot. First, the service was absolutely awful. We were sat immediately but it took almost 10 minutes to get someone to come over and greet us. She also just introduced herself and then went silent. Didn't ask what we would like to drink, if we wanted any appetizers, nothing. So I just started ordering. It took 15 minutes to get our drinks and they forgot one of them. When we reminded this person who brought our drinks over that we were missing the one, she left and took another five or so minutes. Mind you, we went in before the lunch rush. There were maybe six tables with customers at this time. Ordered two appetizers, still no bread at our table, husband orders a wedge salad as a side for his steak and that came out immediately but nothing else. Before the appetizers. Get the appetizers and the bloomin onion is completely obliterated. Just dark brown and burnt, we actually sent it back. Cheese fries were fine. I ordered the salmon and it was clearly old, VERY fishy. Mixed veggies were soggy and gross. The kids tenders were also dark and burnt. Our waitress was nowhere to be found the whole entire visit but when we sent the onion back she started paying far more attention, but by then we were done. Asked for the check and this person brings us some mobile electronic payment processing system and proceeds to hover over my husband while he entered his tip. We gave her a 15% tip. I did not choose the suggested tip amounts because I don't feel we got the service that warranted it. The manager at this restaurant clearly does not care. He walked up to our table with some of our food, did not greet us or say a single word. Placed our food in front of us and walked away. He just looks like he hates his job. There are stains all over the booths and it's just not clean. It looks like the shell of a restaurant that's ready to give up. I have such a hard time dropping $150 on lunch for my family only to have subpar food and terrible service. This is why chains are having a harder and harder time keeping butts in the chairs. I would much rather visit the local taco shop or burger joint but we chose Outback. Now we know why we don't go to Outback. Last time my money will be spent at this location and any others. Food: I only had a side salad and side of cheese fries, but they were both delicious. Outback is the only place I will eat blue cheese anything. Their homemade blue cheese dressing is amazeballs. The negative reviews don't reflect a new manager and the standard favorites you come here for. Cold drinks, friendly faces, nice atmosphere, and dependable,delicious food. You won't do better than the Outback at exit 95 off 95 - especially if you are lucky enough to have Jess as your server. No compliants. Just right. Plus a good value on wines. I came three ago and had the worst experience possible at the restaurant. Today was no difference. We waited for 1.5 hours for the food, the restaurant was freezing cold and once the food got there, it was cold as well. Went there for a nice dinner date with my wife on Christmas Eve (as of 2024). We got there a little bit later due to the holiday season and there wasn't a lot of options. When we first walked in it was crowded, but the hostess welcomed us in. I knew there wasn't gonna be about a 15 minute wait but the timeframe was worth it. Once we were seated, "Serenity" welcomed us with opened arms and made us feel right at home. I could tell she was a little bit nervous and overwhelmed, but it didn't seem to bother her much. Her warm smile and friendly demeanor made us feel welcomed; and she was very patient with us when ordering and was thoughtful to check in on us every so often (and there was a lot of people inside). The cooks and chef did phenomenal as well, we ordered a filet mignon with fries, potatoes and sweet tea, with a side of lobster tail; as well as some prime rib for the wife, some water and sweet tea. If I could have, I'd have given everyone a tip, but Serenity was more than deserving of it. I would highly recommend her as our waitress and look forward to making more visits there soon. read more

Family loves this place for steaks. I enjoy their grilled salmon. This visit I tried the toowoomba salmon, and it was tasty! Sauce included shrimp. The rice pilaf, not my thing. Always taste like freezer burn or some off flavor at most restaurants using a premade mixture. Today was no different. Ugh. The steamed veggies were just ok. I opted for the upgrade of the blue cheese pecan salad as my side. Wish it wasn't premade, the lettuce gets soggy from the dressing, and then they bring you more dressing. Thick, gelatinous, balsamic looking stuff. Their new strawberry salad was a hit with my daughter. And the potato soup was thick, flavorful and hit the spot. read more

I went to the Smithfield NC Outback for lunch today with a party of five. The service was absolutely horrible. We waited for about an hour for our food to come. When it did one of us found hair on their plate. The waitress took it back and while she was gone we saw hair in another plate. At this point we all lost our appetite. A manager came out and offered an excuse saying it looked like fuzzys from the towels they use to dry the plates with. Either way it shouldn't have been in the food. I asked them for a check for what we did eat which was a Blooming Onion, a coke, two ice teas and two waters. In the spirit of good customer service I expected them to comp it. But charge us they did. Additionally before leaving I used the men's room and it was dirty and absolutely disgusting. While I have dined at other Outbacks several times in the past, this location does not represent their brand and I would never dine here again. Update: so as suggested by Angelleca I sent a message to Outback steakhouse.com/contact. I did receive an email and voicemail from one of the store service managers wanting to make my experience right. I feel they had their opportunity while I was sitting there and failed. I don't plan on going back there so at this point there's not much they can offer me. This location is in a high traffic area at the outlets in NC right off 95 and will probably always do well. It's just a shame they represent the Outback brand so poorly to so many people. read more

Honestly ever since they changed ownership this entire restaurant has went down hill. I came to eat dinner with my parents, there was ketchup on the plate they gave us the bread on. it took our waitress almost 30 mins to come to our table -- she was busy I get it. Food came out cold and overcooked. My medium porterhouse came out extra extra well down. By the time we got our actual food we had been there 2.5 hrs and we just boxed it and asked for our check. I'm no meat expert but this is not a rare steak. It came out originally this color, I sent it back and not even 30 seconds later they sent out (what I think) was the same steak. Shame on them. $78 later and a lousy prime rib steak. Our server was good but when she brought out the second steak, she didn't ask if it was cooked correctly and neither did the manager, Justin. Service was slow. Our salads went to the wrong table. Our meal went to the wrong table and waitress said since it hit the table she had to refire. When she brought it back, my husband's medium rare was well done. I think they reheated the same steak and served. Our potatoes were mixed up. I felt my medium was a tad overdone as it was charred black, but they disagreed. They did comp my husband's meal but did not explain and we were not sure if he was getting a new steak or a comp. Stopped in on June 7 2023 around 630 for supper. Had a short wait but were seated pretty quickly. Quick service to bring the bread and drinks. We had the Ahi tuna appetizer and it was very good. Sorry no pictures but trust me if you like Ahi tuna this one is pretty good. Both salads came right after the tuna and they were very good also. The entrees came after we had finished our salads and we agree the steaks were Cooke correctly and tasted great. My wife usually takes some steak sauce but this steak did not need any, ( she had the filet ) while I had the sirloin. No fun trying to watch the calories but something's are worth it. We had not been to an outback in a few years ( probably BC) after having some less than great experiences at the local one, but this worked out well for us and was even worth the drive to get there. This location is not a good representative of the Outback chain since this was our second try for this location. They struggled with help then and still many months later, no change. The wait was an hour+ with half the tables inside empty on arrival and departure. 3 booths Next to us stayed empty for over 50% of our dining time. Three of us ordered the Twins Reef Shrimp dinner and the scampi shrimp were very mushy. No texture at all and we all left them not eaten. 3 garden salads came with everything on them (why ask if we want anything not added if they come out with stuff you don't want anyway) 1 wedge salad (finally back) was horrible. Worst one ever/could not eat it due to being soggy. I took it as a side and they obviously made it earlier and just let it sit until the meal was ready. Our waitress did notice we were not eating some of the items but when everything is so behind and slow why wait for more food/reorder to come out. We are not complainers so just chalked it up to this location is bad. Coming inside that evening the vibe gave one of us doubts anyway. Maybe we should have gone with that opinion. The waitress was very pleasant but she was gone for long periods so we just took what they give us since someone else brings out your orders. This location needs a way overdue remodel and some help with staffing numbers. We heard lots of complaints that evening from others waiting or just leaving after their meal also. In our travels from Naples, Fla and a cousin from Emerald Isles over a 100 miles away we decided to dine here. He drove up to have dinner with us. Our server was STEPHANIE R. She was great. Had a ball teasing her, laughing with her and she also was very personable, funny and always the professional. We took about an hour to order because it was a few years seeing each other...so our apologies Stephanie. But we couldn't move. I really wanted to give them more stars, but it's difficult to do. First, their app was not updated. We looked to see if there was a wait and the app consistently told us there was no wait. We put our name on the wait list for 6:30 pm and got there by 6:15. We were not seated until almost 7 pm. It took us about 15 minutes to order in part because we needed to decide what we wanted, but also because our waitress was overwhelmed. She actually sent another server over to get our order. It took at least a half hour, or more to get our food. People who were seated after us, and ordered after us, got their food before we did (same waitress). Needless to say, our food was barely warm by the time we got it. We didn't dare to send it back because we didn't know how long it would take to get more and it was close to 8 pm as it was. The food was alright, but one at my party was unsatisfied entirely and sent it all back. Another was given a barely warm NY Strip and when they cooked it again it was still dark red in the center. They forgot a salad, two soups, and when we asked for our cheesecake flavors they messed up the count & the centers were still frozen. Our waitress was definitely given too many tables when our group was as large as it was (11) and frequently were other waitresses helping because she was given too much. At one point, I saw cooks delivering food & the GM went up to run the hostess stand. So whatever group they had tonight was either short & just not cohesive and suffering. Dined there with family on a Saturday evening so it was busy but nothing out of the ordinary for an Outback restaurant. Staff were friendly but while we were waiting for our table we noticed it taking more than 20 minutes for a table to be cleared and cleaned up after a family left. Our waiter was attentive enough but the kitchen was apparently very slow as it took us 2 1/2+ hours to get our food, eat and get out of there. Food was good. Had a reservation set for Saturday at 7pm. They asked us to wait for a table that was still being used to set our party. That was fine, we had originally scheduled for 17 but had only 10 show up which was fine. When the other party left, it took them 20 minutes to clean the table, get it set up for us. So our party was squeezed in the tiny waiting area at the front (not to mention it was packed full on a Saturday). I get that everyone is busy and it was a busy night, but it shouldn't have taken that long since our reservation was at 7. Ordered food and around 7:30 manager came by and asked if everything was alright, told him if we could get food would be better.
