Growing up in Clayton, NC, Smithfield is close (also a historic high school rival) but a nearby small town that had more major stores and restaurants growing up. Cricket grill is a staple in the community and has been working from the bright yellow trailer for longer than I can remember! This is not the place to go for the sam's club style hot dog with relish - this is the south! Red hotdog with homemade chillin(NO BEANS!), ketchup, mustard, onions, coleslaw, fries, and a sweet tea (mix it with lemonade if you're feeling spicy!). For less than five dollars you'll walk away with two hot dogs, fries, and a drink that is perfect for your lunch break! Other amazing things on the menu are the egg rolls and chili burgers. But as for me the hot dogs - or glizzies as the kids say - call me every time ! Now for those from out of town - the line and service can be intimidating! Man, this place is like eating at your mamas house. I had two hotdogs all the way. They were awesome. I also had a Dr. Pepper. All this came to about $4.50. The ladies are sassy and friendly. I would gladly move in with them and help them. They are fun people. This place is a simple trailer next to a parking lot on Main Street in Smithfield and they do it "like it used to be", which means basic, simple, and you leave feeling great. This is one of those hot dog joints that I'd bookmarked quite awhile back, and we finally made it. It is one of a sizable number of hole-in-the-wall, mom an pop restaurants in the Smithfield/Selma area that still serves up great hot dogs, burgers, fried chicken, and pork barbecue, and a few other items as well - Millie's, Chicken Barn, Zack's Char-Grill, White Swan BBQ, Holt Lake, Heidi's, and Dupree's. Now, Cricket Grill is the quintessential hole-in-the-wall - no inside seating (and only a couple of stone seats outside), a walk up window for ordering, a relatively tight menu, a number of hand written signs (including one that describes what "All The Way" means), and a $1 hot dog with a screaming red wiener and a small splash of chili! We ordered a Hot Dog, all the way, and a Steak Sandwich, and they were ready in a flash. The hot dog was a very nice Southern chili dog, the only thing off about it was the very small amount of chili. All in all, Millie's hot dog is a bit better, for me anyway. This is the best fast food place ever. Don't allow the outside appearance to deter you. This place has everything- hotdogs, burgers, chicken wings, fries and their egg rolls were amazing. Not only do you get great food and great service but they have great prices. My family and I spent a total of about $30 and received 3 burgers, 3 hot dogs, 3 orders of egg rolls, 2orders of fries, some wings, 3 lemonades and 2 apple turnovers to sum it up. They only accept cash but the food, prices and service are worth giving it another visit. I can't help but to rave about this place. read more

Damn! This place is amazing! This is an eccentric little hole-in-the-wall off the main strip in Smithfield. By that, I mean it's an old trailer (single-wide) right off the road. Everything is very straight-forward: hot-dogs, burgers, chicken sandwich, et cetera. Nothing gourmet, vegan, gluten-free, or fancy-schmancy. The onion rings are ridiculous, and the egg-rolls are an absolute must try. The food isn't going to blow you away, and it's not going to challenge you, but it is SOLID old-fashioned grill food. Worth the drive, and a cool experience. Would not suggest it if you are... one of those people that are... real picky and insist everything sucks if because the place is rough around the edges. read more

Cricket grill is one of those Park your car, order and go places. It is constructed from an old single wide trailer with no frills with any of the decor but the food is great. Hotdogs with mustard, onion and chili (Dukes way) are only 1 freakin $. That is so cool. I will frequent this restaurant often. read more

I wasn't blessed with the ability to settle with a Good Man, but I have found Cricket Grill! This is something I can bring home to Momma, and she'd be proud! Granted, its basically a single-wide mobile home on the roadside in Smithfield NC, but the food is amazing. Be prepared to stand outside in line before you get to the window where the lady there demands your order, and fast. They all move like a well oiled machine in there, getting the food out as hot and quickly as possible. I fortunately discovered the Egg Rolls there... home made every day, even the Sweet & Sour sauce is freshly made! These are the best I've had in North Carolina. I also got a couple of hot dogs with mustard and chili, and a hamburger with slaw and tomatoes. I took it home and enjoyed it all, even after a 20 minute drive. The lemonade is great too. I'll save you the details of how my girl and I came to this road-side food trailer, just know that it involved Ava Gardner, hunger, and the need to stretch our legs. A line of people outside this place convinced me that we had stumbled upon a local gem. As we walked up to the menu posted outside, I couldn't believe the prices. Everything was plus or minus a dollar - hot dogs, steak sandwiches, drinks. A cheese dog, steak sandwich, and two drinks cost us just over $4. The lady taking orders was friendly, but brutally fast and efficient. We had our food in a matter of minutes. We sat down on a bench outside and indulged it what had to be my most delicious, yet heart-damaging meal to date. The steak sandwich looked like it had been beer-battered and fried, then slathered with a bit of mayo before being slapped between two buns. Several leaves of lettuce kept it company. I'd hope they would offer a bit of redemption for this dietary hell. Needless to say, I loved it. No complaints from my girl about the cheese dog either. As I watched the storm clouds in the distance, I wished for some indoor seating, or at least outdoor covered seating. No matter, as the meal was finished quick enough. I always say you should never hesitate to stop at a restaurant if there's a crowd of people outside, no matter how kicked-in it may look. The locals always know something you don't. I grew up in Johnston County and was practically raised on Crickets hot dogs. I've long since moved away and I travel to all corners of the US for my job. I have tried every other regional favorite, from Chicago dogs with veggies on top, Pink's in Hollywood, to NY street meat, and Ben's Chili Bowl in DC. I can, with no hint of bias say that Crickets has the best hot dogs in America. Period. Full stop. Crickets is an Eastern NC institution, right along with Smithfield's BBQ. The fire engine red Carolina Packers Bright Leaf hot dogs are made right here in town, as is the signature chili. They are signature items and both are incredible. Add yellow mustard and freshly chopped onions (do not omit the onions, even if you don't like onions! Just do it!) and you have the quintessential NC staple. If you're really feeling fancy throw on some coleslaw for a little extra. The menu is expansive with plenty of other fast food items, often at "special" prices. The fries are a bit of an afterthought, but good. Try the lemonade for your drink. I have no idea how they make it, but it is absolutely delicious! Best of all, the prices are still just excellent after all the years as is the service. You can feed your entire family good food for a fair price. The burgers are also great, and the family that owns the business (and has for decades) is so nice and treats everyone like family. I really can't say enough about how I love this place, and try to stop by every time in town. Note: this is a hot dog stand, not a sit down restaurant. You order outdoors and while there are patio tables, most people just eat in their cars. If you really like the hot dogs, stop by a local grocery store. You can find them as well as the chili and have the Crickets experience at home. Boil, don't grill the hot dogs! If you're ever traveling through NC, make the Smithfield outlet mall pitstop just off I-95 and enjoy this hidden jewel! I can't wait for Guy Fieri to finally discover this place. It should be the East Coast version of Pinks. If you have time, swing around the corner to Hills Of Snow and get yourself a snowball, which goes perfectly with Crickets dogs! read more

We took a wrong turn on the highway and ended up in smithfield.. we were starving and saw a line here. We figured that was a good sign... one of our favorite restauarants in our hometown resembles this place. The girl taking orders was super fast and efficient- more places need a girl like her! I wondered how come everything was so cheap and fast. We got to our car and learned why- the burger was disgusting..... like a cheap cafeteria burger and the fries weren't hot and were also cheap tasting.
