Growing up in Clayton, NC, Smithfield is close (also a historic high school rival) but a nearby small town that had more major stores and restaurants growing up. Cricket grill is a staple in the community and has been working from the bright yellow trailer for longer than I can remember! This is not the place to go for the sam's club style hot dog with relish - this is the south! Red hotdog with homemade chillin(NO BEANS!), ketchup, mustard, onions, coleslaw, fries, and a sweet tea (mix it with lemonade if you're feeling spicy!). For less than five dollars you'll walk away with two hot dogs, fries, and a drink that is perfect for your lunch break! Other amazing things on the menu are the egg rolls and chili burgers. But as for me the hot dogs - or glizzies as the kids say - call me every time ! Now for those from out of town - the line and service can be intimidating! Take your time reviewing the menu and let the cashier know you are new and need a bit of help, because the line goes quick!

Wow! Passing through Smithfield. I spotted this place and had to turn around to check it out. I love a hole in the wall. They are full of surprises! This one thanks to some quick research had me convinced to try the Egg Rolls! They didn't disappoint, they were off the charts! Can't. Wait to go back!

First know it's cash only! Super fast and efficient as well as cheap cheap cheap!! Got hotdogs all the way, 1 cheese burger mustard chili and slaw, 2 egg rolls And one apple pie and 2 sweet teas. The hot dogs and burgers were messy. Served fast but very messy. Honestly. I didn't care for the chili. Maybe it would be better with other options/toppings. The real star of the show were the egg rolls. They are great and came hot out of the grease. The sweet tea was great and so was that fried apple pie. All of the above was $12.

This is one of those hot dog joints that I'd bookmarked quite awhile back, and we finally made it. It is one of a sizable number of hole-in-the-wall, mom an pop restaurants in the Smithfield/Selma area that still serves up great hot dogs, burgers, fried chicken, and pork barbecue, and a few other items as well - Millie's, Chicken Barn, Zack's Char-Grill, White Swan BBQ, Holt Lake, Heidi's, and Dupree's. Now, Cricket Grill is the quintessential hole-in-the-wall - no inside seating (and only a couple of stone seats outside), a walk up window for ordering, a relatively tight menu, a number of hand written signs (including one that describes what "All The Way" means), and a $1 hot dog with a screaming red wiener and a small splash of chili! We ordered a Hot Dog, all the way, and a Steak Sandwich, and they were ready in a flash. The hot dog was a very nice Southern chili dog, the only thing off about it was the very small amount of chili. All in all, Millie's hot dog is a bit better, for me anyway. The Steak Sandwich was the "chuck wagon" type, and while it had good flavor, it was more than a little greasy. If in the area, I'd drop by for a quick HD!

A Classic Done Right at Zack's Char-grill. Sometimes the…read morebest meals are the simplest ones, and Zack's Chargrill in Smithfield proves this perfectly. My wife and I stopped in for what we thought would be a quick bite, but ended up with something much more satisfying. The menu isn't fancy - just good, honest burgers and fries - but the execution is spot-on. My wife ordered a double cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, while I went full Carolina style with chili, slaw, mustard, and onions. Both burgers were cooked exactly right, with that perfect char-grilled flavor you can only get from doing things the traditional way. What really struck me was how this meal brought back memories of old-school burger joints where quality ingredients and proper technique mattered more than gimmicks. The fries were crispy and hot, the perfect complement to these substantial burgers. If you find yourself in Smithfield and craving a burger that tastes like it should, you really can't go wrong with Zack's Char-grill. It's old-time goodness served fresh, and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Sorry about the photos. Phone screen went blank and couldn't see what I was aiming at. :-)

I was driving around town after visiting the University (which one, i can't recall) and wanted some local bar b que. I'm a yankee so NC barbeque is a bit different for me. I've tried the mustard-base and the vinegar-base and they do offer a vacation from the usual tomato-base/molasses based barbeque Stuff was fall off the bone and definitely worth the trip

It's a small business and most people ordered to go. Very few tables and parking. We walked in as a party of 4 and they didn't have seating, but we were waved over by a local to share his table and gladly took him up on his offer. Come to find out he was a local columnist and seems to be known very well by the community. We had great conversation, over a great meal. The owner came out and chatted with us for a little. It's been family owned since 1930! Everyone we encountered was very friendly. Including the local sheriff who was the cashier. We were greeted by a friendly server and a basket of hush puppies and a bucket of honey butter. We ordered a little of everything. True NC pork BBQ, southern style fried chicken, fried shrimp, boiled butter potatoes, colla greens, mac and cheese and cole slaw. EVERYTHING was good. The only let down was the mac and cheese. We were hoping for a baked mac and cheese but it was more of a velveeta style rou mac and cheese. Still good, just not what was pictured or what we prefer. This is a super easy stop off int. 95, maybe a mile off the exit. We will most definitely be stopping in every year as we head south. I would suggest you do the same!
