Looked for lunch on the way down I-95 headed to Florida. A buffet connected to a budget hotel. Recipe for disaster? Nope. Thanks to previous yelpers we drove right up. Excellent food. Fried chicken, meatloaf, yams, mashed potatoes, southern veg, salad, pies.... all really spot on. The biscuits are light as a feather. Even the bbq was tasty for restaurant fare. I had heard about this place so on trip through the area we stopped for a Saturday lunch. The place was packed. Front desk staff was very friendly, ... loved her Boston accent. The food was tasty southern cooking, hot and well seasoned and lots of choices. Plenty of desserts to choose from and the ones we had were good. Pretty good buffet food for a decent price. read more

This was by far the worst buffet we have ever eaten, the only containers the food could be put into were made of styrofoam. Even the banana pudding was tasteless. We were driving about and stumbled onto the place, parking lot had a number of cars so we assumed it would be good. It definitely was not worth the $15.00 per person price. We had our Father's Day lunch here today. The restaurant has a nice feel, but extremely tight with everyone lined up for the buffet coming from different directions with the main dining room and then the back rooms. The food was good, the desserts were average at best. The waitresses left us tea and water on the table but they needed to leave some ice as well but didn't. The weird layout as well as the difficulty to navigate the buffet was why the rating wasn't better. The amount of money this place pulls in, along with the location they need to invest in a better layout as well and a better parking situation. What an experience! Lots of choices but definitely not the best quality. It's old-school buffet with lotsa hands touching serving utensils. The plates were smaller than average serving plates; therefore, many folks seemed to layer their plates. We were in line for at least a half hour before getting inside the restaurant - in all fairness - the extended wait could have been due to Mother's Day. We ate here for the first time this evening. There was a line but it moved quickly. The buffet was refreshed frequently. Almost all the food was homemade and my husband said it was the best fried fish he had ever had. I was pleased that the buffet had hard to find items like chicken livers and buttermilk pie. Absolutely wonderful!!! One of the few, or maybe the only, buffet in the Wake/Johnston county area and they do it right. Seafood nights on Friday and Saturday, along with the favorite country cooking. No matter what you decide to eat, you cannot go wrong. We eat here at least once a week. The waitresses are friendly just like it was back in the good days, the setting is just a country, laid back atmosphere. If you have complaints about this place, then it is you that may be the problem. If you don't like a small town, country atmosphere, then you shouldn't go. We will for sure though. Stopped at this place on my way to NYC from Miami. We saw a lot of signs off of i95. The sign boasted southern food Buffett and bbq. Once we arrived it looks very busy so we were excited. Once we walked in there were we saw a lot of locals. What initially bothered me is there's no sign on how much it cost. So that's annoying. Then the food items were limited. I didn't like the food that much. The fish was okay and so was the fried chicken. My family liked the food so I gave 2 stars but I'm the one that writes the reviews . read more

So the wife & I drove 45 mins. to eat here. Buffet price is $15.75 per person, a little pricey in my opinion. For $15.75 you get over cooked fried chicken, over cooked fried fish, chicken pastry that is all clumped together. All the vegetable containers were almost empty as was the white rice & mashed potatoes. The kitchen staff couldn't keep up with the demand for food on the buffet as people were waiting in line for them to bring food out. I waited 20 minutes for fried chicken only to get over cooked fried chicken. The fresh chicken pastry they brought out was clumped together so that tells me they don't know how to cook it. These folks offer up a nice, varied country cooking buffet centered around excellent Fried Chicken, solid Fried Fish, Chicken and Pastry, CS Steak in Onion Gravy, Chopped BBQ Pork, a nice selection of vegetables and desserts, small salad bar section, and great hush puppies. The buffet is all you can eat, and at lunch will set you back $7.65 before your drink. You can order off a limited menu, but why would you? For example, you can order 2 pieces of Fried Chicken with 2 sides for $7.95. I can eat all the Fried Chicken I want, along with ALL of everything else on the buffet for 30 cents LESS! This is definitely an old fashion country buffet, huge parking lot and definitely lots of seating. About $13.50/person and all you want to eat and drink. So what's on there line: fried chicken, excellent cubed steak in gravy, fat back, mashed potatoes, white rice, cabbage, corn, many salads, chicken & pastry, fried fish - shrimp-stuffed crab, hush puppies, pulled pork BBQ plus a few more entrees and veggies I can't remember. There's a rather large dessert line w/banana pudding, cakes, cobblers etc. They've got styrofoam plates and bowls so get what you want. There are also plates to go by the pound, don't know how much per/lb. There's something in there for everyone but we just don't eat that much and very rarely hit a food buffet. Attended a family gathering July 15 '23 in a private room..which was dingy, cramped and not setup to accommodate our party after months of advance notice and a deposit ...The owner is very unprofessional and his staff is likewise/poor customer service which was border line racist! Not fancy, the whole hog barbeque is very good, there's even some of the crunchy bits that are very good. Had some shrimp , catfish and fried fatback all good. If you're not from this area, just don't bother. It's overpriced at $8, even for all you can eat. Not trying to be offensive or anything. This place is obviously a family favorite and has sentimental value for some locals, but it's just not very good. I saw people describing it as good southern cooking, which is why we decided to try it. However, it didn't seem like much "cooking" was going on there. Pretty much everything is out of a can. Here's a list of what was had and how it was: Ham hock- this was really good. The best thing, hands down. I'd recommend mixing them with the canned green beans. Fried chicken- this was also good. Green beans--canned. Squash- mushy and tasted like fish, for some reason. Mash potatoes--instant. Catfish- ok. Pulled pork and eastern bbq sauce- sub par. Hush puppies- too crispy. Potato salad- too sweet, not enough potatoes. Bean pie- ok. Banana pudding- warm, mushy. The people working there were really nice, though. read more

Love this place. The fried chicken, shrimp, bbq, chicken pastry (like dumplings), vegetables, dessert, pellet ice, and pitchers of tea on the table are all things I love. It's not much to look at but the food is great! Service is down-home friendly. It reminds me of places from my childhood. We can't find places like this where we live now so we stop here when we are out this way. If you aren't into Southern cooking, you may not like it. When you think of the traditional American buffets, people tend to think of choices blended with a form of homecooked styles. However, the overall experience at this particular buffet was subpar and deeply disappointing. I tried samples of bbq, fatback, and chicken. All of the selections were lukewarm, had no flavor whatsoever and was ultra dry. As for the vegetable selections, it tasted as if it were straight from a can. Again, it lacked any depth of flavor or originality. Still, the serving temperatures were lukewarm to cool. Lastly the dessert, banana pudding was the worst I have experienced in years. The texture felt as if it wer​e made three days ago. The only plus was a fair selection of food choices, and the restaurant was clean. I was not alone in sharing my experience. The table of friends gave facial expressions or left plates remaining with food uneaten because of the lack of attention focused on what should have been a better food experience. I wasn't sure what to expect when coming here. This is my second time here for a family function. I'm not too fond of buffets. It's not the worst I've had and definitely not the best. I'd say it's mediocre for a buffet. If you can get the fried fish when it's first cooked then it's very delicious. The collard greens we're good. I did like the chocolate meringue pie. I usually don't give one star, especially a buffet that is cheap enough for the food. But this buffet, is bad... I saw the reviews said it was good, those reviews were kind of out dated, I guess. I had good experience at another southern style buffet several days ago. So when we saw the this one called Southern buffet on the way home, it sounded good. We were actually looking for a BBQ place, but couldn't find it .And it is so close to JR Cigar, we were going to stop there anyway. So we decided to give it a try. I should just leave when I saw the food was very limited for the lunch buffet at 12:30pm. One buffet table with less than 10 different hot food and some salad items. Another two buffet tables were almost empty, only 4 different kinds of dessert, and two of them had a little bit left on the bottom, they never refilled them during I was there. I thought, well, maybe the food will be good taste, then I don't need that many varieties. But I was wrong. Fried chicken was over fried, skin was dry, not that crispy any more. The meat inside was totally dry, the worst fried chicken I had this time during my vacation in NC. I love Fried chicken, the fried chicken here, was bad. Harsh browns tasted tough and chewy, bad. Mashed potato with super salty gravy, bad. Only one green, it was canned green beans. Two kinds of beans. Sweet potato was not that bad. Coleslaw was good. There was some potato salad sauce left in the bottom of the container, it never got refilled either. No fresh fruit, only one canned peaches. Well, at least the BBQ pork was pretty good. But it's buffet, right? I can't just eat the pork. I can recall everything on the buffet table now, because the varieties were so little. Desserts looked nasty and tasted nasty. I haven't had bad food like those for a long while. I go back for more plates of food if the food is good in a buffet. But this one, I didn't want to go for another plate. The food here reminded me the prison food, even I didn't go to prison before. But it just looked like that. The price is cheap. Only $7.4 for lunch, $1.25 for ice tea. Even it's cheap like this, I still have to give one star, cause the food was really horrible. Don't go there! There are much better Southern buffets in NC for the almost the same price. read more
