Ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and green beans.
    Fabian G.

Nothing out of the ordinary with Outback. We were seated right away and our server was very attentive. I wish I could give 5 stars to her. The food however was very meh. My wife ordered the filet mignon medium and I ordered the ribeye medium rare. The kitchen got doneness switch on our steaks. But other than that it was ok.

    Sautéed mushroom topping...??

You know I can't write anything about Outback's food that you don't already know. I can tell you about their staff and service. The hosts were friendly and my waitress rocked. My pre-steak salad was mostly white lettuce, which I loathe. Lettuce should be GREEN. My waitress asked about it and I told her it wasn't great. She offered to provide another salad or side and I declined (I still have steak coming! The salad is like the warm-up act before a concert - I didn't come here for salad). Within minutes I had a manager check on me and offer another salad or side and again I declined. She said she'd remove the salad from my bill (not sure how that works since it was included with steak...?). I got the filet mignon with mushroom topping. Steak came bare. I had to ask twice for them. When they arrived, I was underwhelmed. They were just canned-looking (and tasting) mushrooms swimming in butter grease. I wouldn't pay extra for those again. Despite a few hiccups, service was excellent and the food was pretty much as one would expect.

    Sirloin

My wife and I decided to go out on a Saturday evening, which is rare for us. Several other restaurants were full with long wait times, so we decided to try here, and it turned into a colossal mistake. My wife had the sirloin and lobster tail with broccoli and a baked potato, while I had a sirloin, salad, and a baked potato, with a frozen margarita. The salad was OK, but the margarita wasn't blended well, so ice chunks would stick to the end of the straw so I couldn't get a drink. Had to let it thaw enough to drink it out of the glass. When the actual meal came out is where things went south. Our steaks looked like they were cooked on a grease-covered flat-top and looked like no steak we've ever seen. The crust was tough and tasted slightly burnt, but thankfully, the inside was juicy and tender despite the taste. My wife's lobster tail was so tough and rubbery that she had to use her steak knife to cut it. We used to eat at Outback in San Antonio fairly often, and it was delicious and consistent, but every single time we've been to this one, it's just been consistently bad. We didn't complain due to the fact that they were pretty busy, but we won't be back.

My steak was cooked perfectly. My server was wonderful and kept us happy and smiling. I only have positive comments for this location.

From the moment you arrive, it feels like you're out in the middle of nowhere--in the best way possible. The rustic atmosphere is incredible, and on the cool day we visited, they had a wood-burning fireplace going right in the middle of the dining room. It made the whole experience feel cozy and authentic. What really stood out, though, was the people. The service was absolutely top-notch from start to finish. I even had the chance to chat with a woman who's been working there for over 20 years--she shared some of the restaurant's history and how it's evolved over time, which made the visit even more special. For food, we started with the fried quail legs--perfectly cooked and seriously delicious (we could've easily eaten more). For the main course, I had the ribeye cooked medium rare, and it was spot on--full of flavor and didn't need a thing added. My wife went with the hamburger steak and loved it as well. Great food, even better people, and an atmosphere that's hard to beat. We'll definitely be back.

The ambience is fine; sortuv a rustic cabin feel. We've had great service the two times we went, and the table bread is wonderful. Not impressed with the thick, (cooked?) carpaccio or the overcooked brussel sprouts. Compared to the USA, it's a 3/5. But in Abilene? Maybe a 4/5.

The food was just okay and the ambiance was nice, albeit slightly dated and themed. Read on for details... Food: The steaks were very good. They just were. No complaints there. The calamari was too heavily fried; downright crunchy, and the calamari may as well have been absent. If I had been blindfolded, I honestly couldn't have been able to distinguish between the fried green beans (I think?) that were in the mix and the calamari itself. The sides were unremarkable. As was the table bread. The dessert I chose was a special; a peanutbutter pie. It was very rich, and would have been all right paired with some fresh whipped cream atop; instead it was smothered in chocolate sauce, despite the chocolate ganache which was a significant part of the pie itself. It made for any almost inedible dessert. ...So why the 3 stars? The service was perfect. And don't forget that steak...

Casual. We sat at the bar and our bartender was amazing! He was funny and attentive despite being very busy! Service: The restaurant was so busy with diners even at 8:30 PM on a Saturday evening. I did not expect it to be this busy in my head. My husband and I sat at the bar since that was open seating and there were no sit down tables available inside or on the patio. The restaurant will add you to the waitlist if you'd like! Food: My husband and I shared the deviled eggs appetizer, and "the burger" with grilled jalapeños and pepper jack cheese. The deviled wggs (satan's huevos) were good, and spicy because we chose the "hellfire" option. The burger was huge! I'm glad my husband I split it because there was no way I'd finish that burger on my own! We both left content and not stuffed.

We looked at the menu online prior to coming and knew that we both wanted to try the cheese steak, so this was a bit of a bummer. They waitress who was very attentive told us that we can't order from the full menu for another 30 minutes so we decided to wait rather than leave. Listen, I get it the idea of having a different menu for brunch, but why not post it on your website and state the specific times for each menu? Also, what difference does 30 minutes make? They couldn't fire up the grill 30 minutes early? It wasn't very busy. Anyways, now for the good part: When we were finally allowed to order our sandwiches they were absolutely amazing. The steak was high quality and the gooey cheese had a ton of flavor. What wasn't amazing however was the bill. $20 for a sandwich and a small portion of fries in Abilene is absolute insanity. What's even crazier is we were charged extra for a side of ranch! I understand you get what you pay for, and there's no arguing the quality of the sandwich was top notch, but at the end of the day it's still just a sandwich. If you're good with dropping nearly $60 (including tip) on lunch, then this is your spot. For me, I'll take my business elsewhere.
