    Prime rib

We made reservations and went for our anniversary last night. We started with drinks at the bar outside, which were amazing! When we arrived they brought us to our table and said happy anniversary and poured us champagne. Everyone came by to wish us a happy anniversary, and the service was great. I got the prime rib special which was HUGE and so so good. Whatever they use for the bark is amazing, and the sauces are . My husband had the NY strip and we split pecan pie for dessert. Really lovely experience! Great food and service!

    Pasta jambalaya

Sat quickly. No wait. Ordered 3 things, jambalaya pasta, Brussel sprouts, cornbread. Cornbread tasted like a rusty skillet, however they removed from ticket. Brussel sprouts were AMAZING. Pasta was a 4.5/5 ONLY cause the shrimp was way over seasoned. Was hard to get down the gully. All were a little overpriced and they do not accept cash. Not a fan of places that don't take cash.

House smoked brisket, buttery pommes puree, broccolini, au jus and crispy shallot

My husband and I came to celebrate his 29th birthday. We had reservations at 7pm on a Saturday night. The bar and hotel was hopping! We arrived at 6:50 and were told it would be about a 5 min wait, but we were actually seated at 7:18. We both received waters promptly, and ordered 2 sweet teas. We ordered the jalapeño & cheddar cornbread appetizer. It was SO good. It comes drizzled with honey so it's a little sweet. I would've preferred it already cut cuz it kind of crumbled but otherwise delicious. I ordered the House-Smoked Brisket which comes with lemon broccolini and pommes puree with a beef au jus and crispy shallots on top. 10/10. The brisket was sooo tender and the jus went perfect with the mashed potatoes. I also got a side of the green chili mac at the recommendation of friends. It was subpar. It didn't taste like much, kind of bland. My husband ordered the 10oz angus steak, medium rare with the peppercorn sauce. He got the fries and broccolini as sides. The steak was juicy and perfect temperature. Seasoning was on par! The service was great, our server was attentive and prompt. For this meal it was $121 without tip. Highly recommend!

    Short Rib dinner

Stayed at the double tree for business and tried this restaurant- Short rib was awesome! It comes w delicious collard greens and grits, but I subbed the grits for Mac n cheese! Souped tasty and drinks are great. Was very nice to not have to drive for hotel dinner and it was great!

Chicken Fried Sandwich and Sweet potato fries

So we decided to come and try the lunch menu offered at the new restaurant located in the new doubletree hotel. Definitely not busy at all, but when we got inside there was no one at the front to seat us. We walked pretty much all the way in about to seat ourselves, and then a customer sitting said there was someone and she came and walked us back to the front and grabbed us menus. Not a huge issue, but definitely should have someone there or something there to give a heads us there are customers waiting. We were seated and had a nice server. I can't remember her name, but she was nice and attentive. Food, not too impressed. We shared the House smoked wings for an appetizer, that came with pickled carrots & celery which, I did not like. It says it comes with Alabama white sauce. I'm assuming what we got to dip our wings in was that. The pros, it came out hot and the dipping sauce was pretty good. But they were tossed in a semi sweet sauce like bbq sauce almost. Which wasn't too good in my opinion but can be for someone else. Just not my favorite. I ordered the chicken fried sandwich. Which I had maybe two bites and that was it. There was not any flavoring. Maybe the breading is what needed to be seasoned better. I tried putting salt but it did not help. Definitely on the sweet side. I was hoping it had some heat to it since it said it had a jalapeño jam or something to that effect. I've looked at some menus online and couldn't find that item on the menus online. But it was on the menu in the restaurant. The sweet potato fries I ate because they were more tasty and better than my main dish. My husband had the Avocado Turkey Club. He enjoyed it but it was huge. He had to take out some of the meat to actually be able to bite the sandwich. We took the remaining food and gave it to our dogs at home. ( I don't mean that in a mean way, but I did not want to waste food we weren't going to finish off ourselves). We weren't too impressed with the lunch menu. But want to try the dinner menu next to see if it's worth it. I did not get a picture of my husband's food and the chicken wings but did take one of my food.

Flat Iron Steak, Pommes Puree, and Peppercorn sauce.
    Brittany E.

Service is outstanding and the steak was cooked properly and had flavor. The Pommes Puree was lumpy and more like mashed potatoes and the Peppercorn Sauce was very thin. For the price of these items, ($38 for the steak and sauce and an additional $6 for the Pommes Puree) I would have liked a little more consistency, but the flavors were still good.

Celebrated an anniversary w/ complimentary dessert! Skillet cookie was delish and could feed 10 ppl!

Great service, large portions and a great meal! Definitely a great date night spot in Abilene!

Breakfast menu at the Doubletree Hotel in Abilene

Paid another visit to this restaurant inside the Double Tree as we visited my daughter at least once a month up in Abilene. Dinner order consisted of a smoked 1/2 chicken with broccolini ($36) plate, kids burger w fries ($11), a Bibb salad ($14), smokehouse Brisket plate ($43) with mashed potatoes and broccoli. No pics on the brisket plate ($43) as it looked like a hot mess as everything was just thrown onto plate. Restaurant stated several steak options were sold out even though it was 6pm when we were sat down. Service is painfully slow but the waiters are very friendly. Chicken skin was burnt to black and the brisket itself was cooked well and looked like pot roast and had a glaze on top. The kids burger was good and grandson said it was a little spicy. Maybe too much pepper. The next morning we order breakfast at the same place and ordered the kids fruit plate ($6), the kids eggs with chicken sausage ($9), 2 coffees ($9), eggs Benedict ($17), and one omelette made to order ($17). The breakfast service was slow but the food was great and served hot. The restaurant was very clean and the atmosphere was good not all over crowded. The story on this visit was that a visiting football team was staying in the hotel and trashed several rooms and which caused me a several hours delay in checking into hotel and supposedly ate through their restaurant food inventory.

OMG, as an "Old Fay Guy" who has had more than his fair share of burgers, this is by far one of, if not the best, burger I have ever had. Shout out to Chef Rob and the kitchen staff. This burger will stand up (surpass) a burger from anyplace around.

Located on the second story of a beautiful building in downtown Abilene sits Grain Theory, a brewpub and coffee shop towering over the city. It is a mixed indoor-outdoor space with plenty of shaded outdoor and cooled indoor seating. Looking at their tap list, my girlfriend and I were impressed by their unique beers to try. I started with the Strawberry Peach Tonic (Fruited Hard Seltzer) and she had a Bella Rose (Rosé IPA). Both were served in cool glasses, with mine being tall and skinny and hers being almost like a wine glass. Shocking to nobody, mine was quite fruity while her Rosé IPA was hoppy with an underlying rosé flavor. Next, I ordered their Oktoberfest (German Märzen) and she had their Season's End (Belgian Dubbel). She described her drink as tasting like a Biscoff cookie. My Oktoberfest was quite malty, and I was a big fan. To close, we both ordered their Luscent (Belgian Table Beer) because small beers are back in fashion and I wanted to try it. It was obviously very light but still had a good flavor that was very bready. Nice and easy to close out our drinks with. They also have food and coffee that we didn't try, but the food looked sensational from what we saw others eating. They also have plenty of board games and card games to play while you're at the brewery and many beers available to take to-go. My only minor complaint is the lack of TVs in the brewery. Maybe it's a purposeful decision, but Texas Tech was playing football, and it would be a great place to watch the game. The bartenders are very friendly and willing to let you try and sample as many beers as you need to make your decision. Grain Theory feels like the kind of place every small Texas city wishes it had. I am very excited to come back here and try more beers, especially with how excellent the space is. RIYL: Cool-shaped beer glasses or a rooftop bar

We were immediately greeted by the server and seated just as quickly. The place was pretty busy, as one would expect on a Saturday at 6 pm, so it was great to be seated right away. The table was already set with two water cups, two plates, two sets of silverware, and two napkins, so we didn't have to set the area ourselves. Our server came shortly after with a large glass bottle of water and took our drink orders. My girlfriend got a bottled Dr. Pepper while I stuck to water. I also noticed they serve plenty of wines as well as a good selection of craft beers. They have ten different specialty pizzas, and we settled on their most expensive: the Carnivore. I say most expensive, but it was $20 for a pizza that fed two. It took about 10-15 minutes before the pizza came out, which is impressively fast. All pizzas are about 12 inches and are sliced into sixes. If you're hungry, consider an appetizer or a dessert, but to us, it was a perfect size with plenty of meat. The crust is thin and crispy, as one would expect from a wood-fire pizza. It was really excellent. For dessert, my girlfriend and I ordered their Saturday Morning Cartoons, which is a panna cotta with Fruity Pebbles that I enjoyed but she adored (I let her eat most of it). All in all, the meal was around $30 plus the tip I added. We were in and out in under 40 minutes, which was quite impressive for a sit-down pizza restaurant. I highly recommend this to anyone living in or visiting Abilene. P.S. My girlfriend wanted my Yelp review to note that their women's bathroom has hair ties, bobby pins, a Tide pen, and other items that you never know you'll need until you do, which gives Vagabond extra brownie points for going above and beyond. RIYL: An affordable meal for two.
