Last night, Vagabond had an amazing win that they weren't even aware of. We're friends with a couple who just had their second baby yesterday. The husband is stationed out of Dyess. Neither one of them really knows anything really about what is uniquely available to eat in Abilene. My wife and I were on our way to the hospital after picking up their kid from daycare when we were asked to pick up some dinner. We had offered to get them anything in town to eat while at the hospital. Given how they were new to town, their regular from Dominoes was requested. It was at this point I suggested Vagabond, telling the couple how for years it's been the best. The wife saw the menu and was impressed, eager to try it out. (We ordered 1 Lucia, 1 Carnivore, 2 Crawfish Hand Pies) The order was placed online, right as we left our driveway, I received a text confirming the order, which was followed up 15-20mins later by another one stating it was ready for pickup. It felt fast. As I walked in, I saw the traditional sights: the owner at the front welcoming everyone in, a filled up room with various parties enjoy their food and conversations, a staff working hard and yet ready to serve. I was told by the owner to go up to the bar where my order was waiting for me. I was in and out so quickly that I could feel the warm air coming off the pizza as I took it outside to my car. My one regret was not telling the owner on my way out how this meal would be the first meal for a mom who just gave birth. When I got to the hospital, the food was still warm. When both the mother and father had their first bite of the Lucia, they both had that 'wow' reaction to how amazing the taste was. Everything ordered honestly received a 'wow.' It was perfect. I have had Vagabond ever since they were out of a food trailer. Since then, it has been the place I always bring people to, particularly if they are visiting from out of town. It was the place where my wife and I brought our kid for his first restaurant meal. The consistent experience of it all is simply the best. I don't review places often, but last night was special. Never a bad thing to say thank you to a group of people who unknowingly wowed a father and mother in a hospital room. Thank you. read more

Just driving through Abilene and serendipitously discovered this amazing place. I wasn't expecting such good and reasonably priced pizza in this little corner of Texas. The jalapeno pepper jelly condiment hit the spot! At least one of the employees here is from the East Bay in California. They have a large selection of Californian wines here. The last stop during my Abilene day trip was the wood-fire pizzeria Vagabond. We arrived at Vagabond exactly at 6:00 pm, impressed by their cork decor outside the shop. We were immediately greeted by the server and seated just as quickly. The place was pretty busy, as one would expect on a Saturday at 6 pm, so it was great to be seated right away. The table was already set with two water cups, two plates, two sets of silverware, and two napkins, so we didn't have to set the area ourselves. Our server came shortly after with a large glass bottle of water and took our drink orders. My girlfriend got a bottled Dr. Pepper while I stuck to water. I also noticed they serve plenty of wines as well as a good selection of craft beers. They have ten different specialty pizzas, and we settled on their most expensive: the Carnivore. I say most expensive, but it was $20 for a pizza that fed two. It took about 10-15 minutes before the pizza came out, which is impressively fast. All pizzas are about 12 inches and are sliced into sixes. If you're hungry, consider an appetizer or a dessert, but to us, it was a perfect size with plenty of meat. The crust is thin and crispy, as one would expect from a wood-fire pizza. It was really excellent. For dessert, my girlfriend and I ordered their Saturday Morning Cartoons, which is a panna cotta with Fruity Pebbles that I enjoyed but she adored (I let her eat most of it). All in all, the meal was around $30 plus the tip I added. We were in and out in under 40 minutes, which was quite impressive for a sit-down pizza restaurant. I highly recommend this to anyone living in or visiting Abilene. P.S. My girlfriend wanted my Yelp review to note that their women's bathroom has hair ties, bobby pins, a Tide pen, and other items that you never know you'll need until you do, which gives Vagabond extra brownie points for going above and beyond. As soon as I walked I was greeted and felt very welcomed. My plan was to order food to go but started a great conversation with the bartender and decided to eat in the restaurant. I ordered the caprese as a started and it was delicious. I also ordered the Lucia pizza which was recommended and did not disappoint. I started this review months ago from my first visit. Loved this spot in downtown Abilene. Super cool vibe, very good pizza. On a Friday night, we had to navigate an hour wait, but we headed nearby to Grain Theory for a quick refreshment while we waited. Once we were seated, enjoyed a selection from some nice wine options, then sampled three different pizza options for our group. The style here is the wood-fired Neopolitan. All three hit the spot. I heard from lots of people that this was the best place for pizza in town. I wish I was able to experience it but unfortunately the owner's attitude prevented that. When arriving at the restaurant I was treated very great by the staff until I asked if my pizza could be cut Chicago style. The wait staff said they don't cut it that way, I said I understand but that's the way I like it, could you ask the cook. I saw the lady go up to the cook and before she could even finish asking I saw the man waving his hands and mouthing absolutely not. When the lady returned she informed me that the cook was the owner and he refused. I could understand if this was an employee but for an owner of a restaurant to have this kind of attitude, I will not do business there. More people need to stand up to this kind of attitude, what happened to "please the customer" not "my restaurant, my way" ? After all is that big of a challenge to cut a pizza in squares? read more

Service was great, if you want more cheese parm flakes, they'll let you have some without charging you extra! The waitress was very nice and attentive to us and the pizza, especially the dough, was very well made and reminded me of my time in Italy. Bathrooms are quite clean and parking is very plentiful. This place was a whole experience which was great! Our server Meesh (hopefully thats how you spell his name) made our dinner an experience with his fun personality and funny conversations. The Lucia pizza was hyped up by many servers at this restaurant but also other locals in town. It was a great pizza! No tomato sauce on it, beware. The jalapeno jam was sweet which I was not expecting. This restaurant rotates their menus weekly which is fun. They import their ingredients from Italy as well. Food was absolutely amazing! I loved every thing I ate. I definitely recommend their bread and butter on the starters menu. Very nice staff and if theirs a wait they will call you when you can get seated. Just want to say I'm giving this 2 stars based solely on our waiter. Man, he was rude, slow, and overall we felt like just an inconvenience to him. To take our order he just came to our table and said "talk to me." We give the order and it's "alright". After we gave the drink order he didn't ask if we wanted to put in an appetizer (just walked away without saying anything.) super unfriendly behavior all night. It wasn't just being blunt or straightforward (which is fine) -- it was just a hostile and rude atmosphere around him. He hands me the bill without even saying a word and walks away. No "thanks for coming in" or "have a good night!" Like how are you the employee and I'm trying way harder than you to be friendly. Very disappointing because the lady with the iPad who sat us to our table was incredibly nice and professional. Food was delicious. Sadly waiter ruined the night for us. Visiting out of town wanted to try since such great reviews. I will have to say they were not that great. Very little sauce or cheese. We didn't realize that over fire cooked pizza meant burnt. Hubbys pizza was almost all black on a couple of pieces. Could hardly taste the cheese or sauce on either mine or his. Informed the waitress and she just brushed our complaint off. This is a simple review. I give this place 10 stars out of 5. I would have never in my life thought an establishment such as this would be found in Abilene. This place is reminiscent of something out of Miami Beach. I sat at the bar since the waiting list for a table was over an hour. I had the best service I have had in Abilene in my 6 months since living here from Florida. Even the Pizza chef was nice along with the Bartender. Loved it! We're visiting Abilene for an RV rally and we popped into Vagabond after visiting the nearby Frontier Texas museum. We ordered beers, then shared a Vagabond Salad. The salad was good. I ordered the Sofia pizza and asked them to add mushrooms. My wife ordered the Vitalia pizza. They brought me some fresh ground red pepper and some fresh coarsely grated Parmesan cheese for my pizza. Pizza crust is probably the best in Abilene (no gluten free option). The menu is small, but I'm sure everything on it is something to be proud of. Great service from the moment you enter the door. Greeted immediately & sat within minutes. Mind you we arrived at 5, so if you don't like long wait times, maybe don't wait until prime time on a weekend The pizza flavor was delicious and unique. You can tell there's something super special and quality about the sauce. The crust was very good but the base was very soggy which for *me* doesn't work as I live for crispy crust throughout. The pizzas are all bougie type concoctions. No regular pepperoni and cheese which makes it unique. So we ordered the margarita(sp?) and I asked for pepperoni to be added, to which my server kindly said that they had a fabulous Genoa Salami (or something like that) which tasted like pepperoni. Okerrrr. Let's do it! Anyhoo- the "salami" was pretty spicy which I wasn't expecting so I had to blow my nose and go to the ladies. There's only a single restroom which was of course occupied as I waited with my nose dripping. Once free the restroom was VERY nice and classy. They even had hair ties and Bobby pins in case you are on a date and you know... need to style her up. Would I come again? Probably for the ambiance, quality, and craft beer & wine selection. I think this is the only spot that had Stone IPA so that reminded me of home and earned points in my book for sure. I may crave that sauce. Actually they really should jar it up, because I'd buy the shit out of it (and make my own pizza) or use it for pasta. Would I return for pizza specifically? Probably not. Pizza was good but they need to be more generous with the sauce on the Bianco pizza, it was half just crust no sauce.

We've eaten here multiple times. The service is always good. The greeter is very friendly. The atmosphere is trendy with a cool rustic but modern feel. You can see the wood fired oven from the tables. The bread with basil butter is incredible. The pizza crust is fantastic. The fresh mozzarella is very good. Each pizza will feed 1 hungry person or 2 people who just want 2-3 slices. My only suggestion is for more topping options such as chicken for protein and/or Hatch green chiles. I tried the Arabella with ground beef and poblano peppers last time, and it was pretty bland. We've been to Italy and eaten lots of pizza there like the margherita. But sometimes you want a little more substance. But very cool that Abilene has something with a modern look and good food. Just wish there were a few more options on the menu. read more
