I wish I could give this bar zero stars. I have never been treated so poorly or with more disrespect. The woman bartender working Thursday night 05/27 shouldn't be employed. After 15 minutes of sitting at an empty bar, she came & took our order. After I ordered drinks (for 6), she tells me she needs everyone's ID in order to serve the party. Get that. Collected the IDs and said the order again. Now she says she needs everyone to come to the bar & order their drinks...everyone is over 40 yrs old including a 92 yr old. After everyone made it to the bar, she refused to take our order much less acknowledge us. We said we were leaving and she started screaming at us saying they were busy. No one was at the bar. Some bartenders friendly others not. It's very "clicky" here. If you go with a regular you're probably going to have a good time. Passive aggressive and sarcastic attitude from bartender and friends. $5 or $6 for a beer and shot of house whiskey was something like $4.75. Late night frozen pizza can be cooked for you if needed. Outback seems to go through phases. Overall it's a pretty standard divey-ish bar (it's slightly too costly and lacking some ambiance you might get in other dive establishments). The beer is clean and they seem to be clearing the lines for the taps well these days, whereas they may have fallen down a bit in the past. They're clean and the food seems to have improved as well. The other night over some beers a buddy got a burger and fries and was satiated by the burger, but the fries were pretty damn tasty. They do have free popcorn that isn't horrible and is a nice touch as free bar snacks have fallen out of style. It does have pretty decent pool tables, but I'd recommend bringing your own cue (as with most establishments) I think they have around 8 tables and hold tournaments weekly I believe. The service has always been friendly and as prompt as possible with how busy it can get on the weekends. They have quite the variety of performers on their karaoke nights, and I must admit to being both entertained and horrified (sometimes both at once!). HH wasn't spectacular, but the pricing isn't over the top anyways ($5 for most craft beers) and they have a good selection. They do a good job of keeping local beer and booze flowing. I love the atmosphere, love the karaoke. The downfall is that it is SO expensive. Especially for a dive bar that smells like a hundred years of molded spilled beer. They try to take advantage of a clientele that they expect will be too tipsy to protest outrageous prices or incorrect charges. I've been to a number of Karaoke bars in my life. Some good, some ok, some terrible. The Karaoke at Outback is some of the best I've ever seen and I highly recommend it to anyone who comes to Boulder. The KJ is excellent, the catalog is extensive, and the acoustics are excellent. read more

I'm pretty conflicted by this place; it has all the markers of a good dive bar, but something always seems off to me. There's shuffleboard, horrible karaoke nights and you can get completely shit-housed on good beer for around $20-25. ....there's just something depressing about this place. If you were born as a crack baby on the streets of Pittsburg and your life has gone downhill ever since, you belong at the Outback. You'll find good, like minded company here. You wont have to worry about appearances here- don't shower, shave, or scrub the pitts. Haven't cut your hair in 15 years? You'll fit right in. Haven't got laid since 1965? Your backpack and sleeping pad will fit in the corner next to the rathole- its practically a new home. This is where you can get loaded before 10 am, pass out by 2 pm, and get arrested for vagrancy by 7 pm. This is the end of the line, fellas. When your 5 months away from imminent liver failure, the Outback is the place to spend your final breaths. Your pitiful, miserable existence will likely come to a conclusion here. Outback, you are the bar I have been looking for in Boulder. Lots of fun bar activities (pool, darts, foosball, shuffleboard), good (bad?) greasy food, Sierra Nevada on tap, and a great crowd! Also a great jukebox. A great place to hang out and have a fun night with friends minus the downtown/college crowds. read more

One of the coolest out-of-the-way places in Boulder. You won't get the downtown or the Hill crowd here, but rather a collection of refugees who like sports, beer and pool. They've also got that wonderful table-top shuffleboard game here, which is great fun. But man, they totally need to redo the bathrooms--or at least somehow try to create the illusion that they've been cleaned once in the last 50 years. My favorite memories of this place are of watching the Red Sox' 2004 playoff run--every single game--here with my buddy from Boston. But that's not the only memory. Old party buddies used to live around the block and we'd walk over and get wasted and fill up on the free popcorn. I love Karaoke. And I do live stumbling distance from Outback . So I have of course frequented this dive bar. From the disinterested waitresses to the pot-bellied manager, it's got its certain charm. I have brought many a friend to this joint, but tonight was too much. Bad karoake DJs I will not stand for. Jimmy - big guy who thinks he's so charming and is actually just a douche.. ya know the, start-an-hour-late, terrible-voice, thinks-he's-the-bees-knees, no-rhyme-or-reason-to-the-order karaoke fascist (you karaoke-lovers know what i'm talking about).. it's somehow... just... not working for me. Hooray for FREE shuffleboard! Honestly, any bar that offers shuffleboard is going to win my heart. If shuffleboard isn't your thing, pick from some of the other entertaining features. Pool tables - Darts - Big TVs - Jukebox - Karaoke - woohoo! They also have a nice little patio area out front. The staff was friendly and the waitress checked in on us just often enough. There were a lot of regulars so you can tell that it is a laid back place that takes care of their customers. They have a large menu of mainly bar food but some sandwiches and salads too. I definitely enjoyed the cheese fries. The missing 5th star is for the price. For four pitchers of beer, two coffees and two appetizers = $80.00 before tip....Hmmm.. maybe we did pay for the shuffleboard after all =/ I'm sure we'll go back while visiting our friends in Boulder. read more

This place is a true dive. We went there to watch football a few Sunday's ago, and they have a nice little set-up. It took a while for them to get all the games sorted out, but they were SUPER accommodating for all sports fans. I even got my own little TV to watch the Pats game. :-) We only ordered the chili cheese fries (green) and they were awesome! Nothing beats a shot and a beer for $7.50 OK, it's my neighborhood bar, I'm biased, AND I was part of the team that built the original bar top when they were the Bank Saloon before they had to move to the new digs in the 70's,and for some reason change their name, and why didn't they sue those chumps from Australia about that name thing since they were the Outback long before those other guys set up shop. OK, OK, this place is way too mellow and they are a REAL BAR that couldn't give a rats ass about someone else using the same name because their regulars would probably never set foot in the other place so who cares anyway...hey, now that stuff is out of the way. Wow good for a buck and a half, I won the football pool this week and drinks were on me. So what better place to have a few beers and a pool game than The Outback. Do you like good service?! Do you enjoy happy bartenders!? Are you looking for a place that you can enjoy!? The Outback is not the place for you. It has always been mediocre service at best. Most often it's poor service. The beer selection is decent. Often times there is something going on that make the venue worthwhile. Despite how the waitstaff makes it seem, it's rarely busy which is nice. However, many times we have waited for service for 20+ minutes. Not even any acknowledgement for that half hour. More often than not we give up and head to the Tavern. I don't think I will ever return here in the evenings, unless dragged against my will. read more

We used to be regulars here. Like every weekend for two years. The waitresses and bartenders were friendly and attentive. The crowd was energetic and fun. Took a break - came back. Ouch. I think I met the nastiest bartender ever tonight. There's almost nobody here on a Saturday night while school is in. The waitresses ignore you. What a difference. And not good. This place is clearly dying. And not just dying, but Boulder dying - as in it'll be bulldozed and replaced by condos in 12 months. This used to be a fun, relaxed, distinctly Boulder place. Now it's servers with a chip on their shoulder, drunk bros, and just a dark, depressing atmosphere. What a shame. read more

We came here to watch USA lose to Canada in the hockey finals. Had they won, it wouldve been 5 stars. The bar tender knew everyones name, he was walking around the TV area asking people if they were good, "Hey Mike, need another one?" I respect that. He came up to me, asked me by name how I was doing (he had my credit card so its not thhhhat impressive but still) and was very friendly. Sierra Nevada on tap. Hell yea. The only drawback is also part of its charm. Its not quite a dive bar because its so huge, but it certainly doesnt cater to the downtown or student crowds. So I can deal with waiting 10-20 minutes for a drink because of all the historic pictures and artifacts on the walls. The karaoke here is FANTASTIC, the food on the other hand is a totally different story. I understand bar food is not supposed to he gourmet but I have been to bars where the food is fantastic.....this is not the case here. I have ordered the chicken tender basket 3 different time and each time the portions were completely different and the quality varied greatly too. The object is to live within wobbling distance from this place. You'll have at least one moment each night with a capital-C Character, you'll cringe at some of the most truly awful karaoke of your life, you'll strongly consider getting a pitcher of beer, you'll throw some darts, shoot some stick... the place is big, and there are a lot of nooks and crannies to melt into with your crew. The Outback is a great change-up from just about anything else in town, but it's particularly excellent after about 11 p.m. on Saturdays. I can't say why, but my favorite feature is the faded, smoke-stained Boulder High School Panthers blanket nailed to the east wall by the bar. As an aside, I've only seen two people turned away at this place -- one was a guy who was drunk and threatening the owner, the second was my buddy who just got there from a wedding and was wearing a pinstriped, double-breasted secondhand blazer and a yellow bow tie. But the kicker was that a drunk friend at the wedding had tagged him with about 3 oz. of Axe Body Spray on the way out of the reception. Don't do either of those things and you should have yourself a fine time. For a dive, there's a very good selection of drinks. read more

Definitive dive bar. Doesn't seem like anything in the bar has been updated since the 80s, or even the 70s. The jukebox, vending machine, video poker are all classic. There's about 10 pool tables with ample playing room, several dart boards, and shuffleboard. It's also HUGE and there's plenty of parking since it's in a shopping center away from the downtown and Hill scene. Wednesdays and Saturdays are Karaoke, and even on Wednesday it's fairly populated and you'll surely be entertained by the characters singing. There's a mix of young people and older folks who seem to blend in with the bar itself, as if they've been coming here their whole lives. read more

I agree that the ideal situation is to live within walking distance. Outback is the place to go out when you don't feel like going out...maybe it's the haze of the pitchers and shots, but after some time now when I go with friends I more or less feel like I'm in my own living room...just with bad karaoke and a higher than normal population of sketchy looking middle agers. The drinks are priced well, the servers pour generously and the pool tables are many. If you like dive bars, this is an upscale example. The bartenders are the worst in town. I order the same thing twice and got two different prices. Overheard the bartenders say to each other "don't worry they have to wait for us to serve them." The toilets are luxurious. The drinks are delicious when you drink them. Go Outback! There's at least 20 stools, not to mention all the chairs, and maybe even more than 20 tables, not to mention all the pool tables. When you go there you can tell everyone likes it when you go there, as long as you're nice enough to have a conversation with anyone who starts talking to you. Conversations with strangers are important to maintain the friendly atmosphere, so do it. The kickball team is a perennial winner. Go Outback! read more

Avoid this place if you're wearing a shirt that costs more than $25, otherwise they'll service 5 other people and take shots with the regulars before they ever even glance in your direction.
