Oscar's Ale House was recently hammered in the local paper, so I went in today to check things out for myself. The cream of crab soup was delicious. The Cobb salad was superb, loaded with chicken, avocado, bacon, egg, tomatoes and lettuce. The service was great, too. There was a decent lunch time crowd and I heard other diners say how much they were enjoying their meals. OK, newspaper - this is not a fancy joint. It's burgers, fish, salads and soups, with wings, fries and onion rings. It's a real breath of fresh air, and a welcome addition to medium priced dining in Frederick. Rock on, Oscar's!!!! read more

I have now been to Oscars three times. Once with all of my girlfriends and twice with my boyfriend. The night with my girlfriends was great. We had great service and the food was delicious. There were a lot of us and I had a chance to taste the hummus, calamari, buffalo cauliflower, Ruben and crab cake. They were all fabulous. The server gave great drink recommendations and we all loved our cocktails. The second time, I brought my boyfriend because I had such a great experience. This time, there were a couple of snaffoos. Nothing major but compared to the time before, I was starting to feel disappointed. As soon as the manager realized it had become a less than perfect experience, he acknowledged it right away. Not only did he give us a round of drinks and removed an item from the bill. ( even though they had fixed the issue for us) He gave us a gift certificate to come back as well. We told him we would be back the next night and he let us know that he wouldn't be there but another manager would. A few minutes later THAT manager came out, greeted us and told us to make sure we ask for him. We both felt like they went really above and beyond for us. At the risk of sounding super corny, they made us feel like we mattered to them as customers. The next night, we had the open meatloaf sandwich, the California salad and drinks. Everything was fabulous. The service was great and exactly like the first night I was there. Sooooo, all of that aside, I loved the atmosphere there as well. Not covered in hipsters like downtown can be, so you can leave your freshly conditioned beard and flannel shirt at home. The crowd reminds me of a true neighborhood bar. This I think can be attributed to A super friendly staff. They almost seem as if they were each handpicked. They visibly work as a team. They played GREAT music the entire time. The hostesses are very sweet and friendly. The bartenders know a lot about beer and offer great suggestions without the ego you might find at other restaurants in Frederick with extensive beer menus. You can expect a wait on the weekends, but trust me..... it's THAT good. Joey and Gary, you are a phenomenal team. Thank you for how well you have treated us. My wife had the chicken pot pie and she absolutely loved it . they even gave us a free dessert because they didn't have mashed potatoes ready lol but gave some delicious wild rice for my side. Came here for lunch with my husband, the service was quick and friendly. Lots to choose from on the menu but we ordered the Magical Mushroom burger of the week and the Buffalo chicken sandwich. Beer mustard was really good and we ordered a little extra for dipping our hand-cut fries. Seemed a little expensive at first but very large portions served made up for it. The food had really good flavors and the bread on the Buffalo chicken sandwich was really unique. They flash-fry raw pizza dough so it was like a savory funnel cake. The sandwich was huge so it became two lunches for me! All of the food, down to the dressings, are house made. Overall rating: 10/10 burgers! My new Monday ritual-- if only my body could eat that much. Food: Actually was planning to go to cellar door for their $5 burger mondays, but found out they were closed. Googled other places and found Oscar's Alehouse. The pictures looked great on yelp, but the actual burgers were even better. I loved the presentation of the burgers, didn't know that they could look so pretty. Despite its image, the burger was still as juicy and sloppy when you bit into it. Very great, juicy, beefy burger meat. We ordered a burger with swiss, one with cheddar, and the Eldersburger (with applewood bacon and cheddar cheese). Each burger comes with fries, and if requested, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mayo. We did substitute one side of fries for onion rings. Everything was satisfying, but the best things to note were: the burger patties with melted cheese, the crispy, juicy bacon, and the crunchy, but chewy onion rings. The bread was also very good, it was a nice, fluffy bun that was toasted to a light charred crunch. Fries were good, but nothing to write home about. Definitely coming back again on Mondays for more burgers! Cost: Our total ended up being about $25. (Burgers w/ fries start at $5 and each additional topping-- besides the basic lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and mayo-- is $1-2.) Atmosphere/Appearance: From the outside, it didn't look like much. There wasn't even a permanent sign, just a banner with the name, which explains why I haven't noticed this place whenever I passed by. The inside was greatly decorated in a modern western saloon style. Very open space for plentiful seating and a separate section for the bar with additional seating. The room was dimly lit (a little too dim if you ask me, could barely read the menu), but definitely in line with the theme of the restaurant. Service: Employees were very friendly and responsive. I think they overheard us saying that there was so little onion rings so they came back with a plate with a few more out of nowhere. Great service! read more

This is a cool place. I had heard of the one out in Eldersburg. The portions are massive and the food is clearly made with high quality ingredients. The buffalo chicken sandwich could probably feed 2-3 people. I had a steak and cheese and it was better than pretty much anywhere except maybe Green Valley Carry Out (shout out!). They had literally just opened maybe a week or 2 prior when I went and it showed haha. The servers were super nice and the food was great, but it was pretty slow to get our order and get the food out. Growing pains I'm sure, they'll figure it out. That's why they get 4/5 stars from me instead of 5/5. I can't totally rip a place when there's no way these servers (or the kitchen for that matter) know the menu backwards and forwards. I'm sure when I go again in a month or so it'll be much improved and be at the same level of quality as the food. Great experience. Will be back :) read more

We were attempting to find a place that had four great things - cream of crab soup, crab cake, crab pretzel, and pot pie. While the atmosphere of Oscar's Ale House was okay, we were not satisfied with our overall meals. The cream of crab soup was salty. The crab pretzel wasn't really that - it was the pretzel appetizer and for an added $7, you could add the crab dip on the side. The crab dip was mostly cheese and not enough crab. The pretzel itself was too salty. The pot pie was okay. I've had better elsewhere. The best thing from our experience was the crab cake. It was delicious but the sides were average as well. read more

I have been to Oscars twice in the last month and both were terrible experiences. Oscars Alehouse used to be a great restaurant where my family or a group of friends and I could gather to have a good meal but over the years, the experience has really gone down hill. I'm not sure whose to blame but the root of the problem has go do with the service. For the first of my bad experiences, myself and the one other person I came with spent 20 minutes waiting for 2 waters and another hour waiting for our food. The only time we heard from our server was when she took our order. When our food came there wasn't an apology but a distracted "here you go" while avoiding eye contact. Today I had my second terrible experience. Our server was named Paige. I was looking forward to eating Oscars famous buffalo chicken sandwich but to little surprise did i find myself losing my appetite and patience during the 45 minute wait for our food. During the first 35 minutes we, again, did not hear from our server or any managers. Then, 10 minutes before our food arrived, a female manager with gauges came over and said everything except a simple apology. The way she talked almost seemed condescending (since we are younger) as if our business was less important than everyone else in the restaurant. I doubt that I personally am being targeted by the Oscar's staff and I highly anticipate that there have been many other customers who have had similar experiences. Although Oscars has great food, the customer service is significantly lacking and they should look to hire a more mature and responsible staff if they wish to uphold their reputation in the Frederick community. I would also like to note that both of the visits discussed above, happened on Tuesdays. A day in which the dining room was half empty. I hope Ralph can take some time out of his busy day, of not properly training his staff, to view this review and hopefully make the necessary changes which Oscars desperately needs. read more

As usual, came upon the reviews for this place on Yelp while I was up in Frederick for a week and thought it would be a good spot for some dinner. Waze was terrible at finding this place and it actually delivered me to the back of a shopping center. The shopping center I was at looked kind of run down to be honest with you and at first, I wondered if I was in the right place. I made my way to the front and low and behold, there it was. Walking in, the place was almost completely empty, but literally, every single person I came across was super friendly. The server came out, took our drink order and brought our drinks very quickly. Throughout the whole time we were there, he stayed consistently friendly and attentive through the whole meal. I ordered the Black Bean Burger and my coworker ordered BBQ Burger. We didn't have to wait long at all for the food to come out at all and as far as black bean burgers go, this one was really one of the best I've had. It was cooked perfectly and came out at exactly the right temperature. The fries were perfect and had the perfect amount of salt on them. A couple other things, first my coworker thought the BBQ Burger was the best one he'd ever had and was actually looking forward to eating the other half of it once he got back to the hotel. This restaurant is listed here with "$$$$" but I don't know why. This is a "$$" place. Not expensive at all. Can't say enough how good this place was and am actually looking forward to going back to Frederick so I can eat here again. read more

We tried Oscar's today for lunch and overall were pleased with the food. The service could have been better. We sat in the bar area and no server for about 5-10 minutes. We ordered water and wings and a couple samples of different beers. The water came then the wings came and were eaten before the server returned without the samples. After we sampled the beers our beer order took another 5-10 minutes. The table next to us which came in after us already had their beers. Once we got our drinks things went smoother. Had the blackened chicken sandwich which was very tasty and just enough when combined with a salad(upcharge). We also had the crab cake sandwich which was good but would have been better with lettuce and tomato. The French fries were very good. I went there for a mid afternoon lunch. I live just a few blocks away so I can walk there. The previous iterations had left me cold. But this looks like this could be a frequent go to local pub. It was quiet and initially I was the only customer in the bar. They did a great job upgrading the interior. Warm and welcoming feeling. The bar and dining room are separate. Bartender was friendly and seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the beers and food. I judge pubs by their burgers. The Eldersburg burger was a no frills bacon cheese burger cooked perfectly with a side of great onion rings. Fabulous! There is a great expansive beer selection. For a first time visit I could not be happier or complimentary. It will be interesting to go when they are busy and hopping. The new ownership seems to know what they are doing and how to run a restaurant. read more

Came in last night with an unannounced birthday party of 12, which was accommodated in the bar area - here's how it went for us: Food: Calamari: best we've ever had, LOVED the banana peppers up in there too! Wings: INCREDIBLE - perfect cook, bright intense spice, not soaked in sauce, juicy, very tasty. Burgers: Killer, unanimous happiness from all Steak Salad: I guess they overcooked the steak, but a manager came over to tell us they were going to fix it, and it would be right out - and about 5 minutes later it was delivered, a flawless mid rare. I appreciated being told a mistake had happened and would be fixed, gives you confidence they are checking every dish with care. Drinks: Quick service, incredibly diverse beer menu including some nitros, ciders, and several beers I'd never heard of. I'm not sure if you can do flights, but I hope so because there were so many we wanted to try... we didn't even make it to the cans and bottles list which was equally as long! Happy to see some Frederick locals up on the board. Service: Joey.. let me tell you about my boy Joey the server. Make him a manager. Seriously, or lead server or something. He was the definition of grace under pressure, we were idiots when ordering and he kept it all cool and organized. Split checks, kept us updated, was right at the table as food runners and drink runners came out to make sure the food/bevs didn't have to be auctioned off. Gave a reminder happy hour was ending with plenty of time to order more, knew the menu inside and out, knew the beers just as well which was impressive for first day, and just the nicest kid. I've been here many times as it is very family friendly and my children love it. The food has always been fine and the beer selection is fantastic- a great combination for a family outing, Today I took my four children- service was outstanding, beer selection was great, the fish and chips was fine, as always. However, the pizza was horrid. I don't believe we've had pizza here in the past but I've had better "take and bake" pizza from Aldi. It really tastes like a frozen Red Barron pizza from Walmart. My children didn't want to eat it and my daughter asked the server to bring her a burger after taking several bites. All previous experiences have been "5 stars" when you consider the family friendly atmosphere, food, and beer selection. Additionally the staff have really been wonderful in the past. Came with my mother on a busy Saturday night but the staff said it wasn't the usual busy crowd! It was bustling and the servers were all pleasant and helpful. I got the salmon (not blackened-personal choice) and my mother got the chicken Madeira (sp?) We enjoyed both our entrees. My mother wanted more asparagus with her meal and Mario obliged with a few more spears. I got the Groove City and LOVED IT. It was exactly as described. Service was great! The food took longer than usual due to the large parties. The chef came out to let us know our order was 2 minutes out. Three of us went for lunch on a Wednesday at about 12:45 PM. It took 25 minutes for us to get our sandwiches but in all fairness there were at least three huge tables of about 20 people each there before us perhaps offices celebrating the holidays. My companions had a shrimp sandwich and a steak and cheese sandwich while I opted for the blackened chicken. They both enjoyed their's but my blackened chicken was too spicy and to charred to really be enjoyed. All three of us love their french fries however! Wow, what a popular place! The wait was almost an hour but we were able to find a place at the bar after a while. The bartenders were extremely busy, so although we ordered and did get our food, it was a different level of service than if we had a waiter. Food was good! I came in because of the reviews but hesitated because of the price rating. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices are not as high as they're rated, more along the lines of 3 $ than 4. I bartender was friendly and helpful which is where I ate. I asked for a beer with some sourness and he delivered. I ended up having the chili as an appetizer and the fish and chips for dinner. The chili was delicious and served with some tortilla chips which made it even better. The fish and chips were good, I liked the fish a lot more than the batter it was served in. I'm used to more of a New England style batter, theirs is thinner and denser which comes across as more of a breading than a batter. There's a nice variety of pub food on the menu and I would definitely give this place a try. read more
