3.5 rounded up due to excellent customer service and one good meal. We checked in and were given a 15-20 minute wait time. Randy drove around looking for a place to park for about 15 minutes - it's rough lol. We were greeted right away and brought waters. Randy asked for a dark roast coffee and it took a few tries to get one he liked and our server was patient and kind about it all. I ordered the pesto chicken sandwich with rosemary potatoes and was disappointed. The potatoes were delicious. Crispy outsides, soft inners and loads of flavor. The sandwich was annoying. It's cut in half and my first half had almost no chicken on it. Turns out the sandwich has small chunks of chicken on it and that the other half of the sandwich had the majority of the chicken on it. The bread is delicious but the bread to chicken ratio is off. It's the thickness of the bread. Even on the other side. While I ate it, the small chunks kept falling out. Maybe because there's so much of the yummy sauce and that helps the small chunks fall out...? Seems to be several things causing the problem. I think it could be solved if the chicken was a piece of chicken instead of several small chunks. I wouldn't order it again. Randy ordered the platas verde again but this time with extra cheese. It took a long time to come out and we didn't get it out at the same time which was unfortunate but when it did come, again, it was good. Our server was indifferent to our presence. It seemed to be a badge of pride or honor that the staff didn't care that customers waited around without any service. No water. No coffee refills. Food for one person. Ten minutes later for the food for the other. No care. We weren't allowed to pay for our food at the cash register. That place where the cash register was. We got barked at by an angry Genzer. We had to give it to the server who took it to the cash register, who took it back to us, which was ridiculous, like a scene out of Seinfeld. This would have been fine but again, the service was slow so we waited so long that I ended up just giving exact change and leaving. Parking is difficult as it's a residential trial neighborhood but you'll find a spot eventually. read more

My first visit to Orphan Breakfast House was right after they reopened for in house dining during Covid. They were serving people in the parking lot. The experience was nothing noteworthy. We went back recently for their specialty vegan items for the Sacramento Vegan Challenge. My friend ordered the Tofu Ranchero. There wasn't anything on the vegan menu that caught my attention so I ordered steak and eggs. I was wondering why their steak and eggs was only $20 when most of their breakfast items seem to be about $15-$18. When I got my plate I was really impressed because there seemed to be a lot of food on it. But on closer inspection it was a few pieces of beef put on a pile of potatoes. What I thought was a big piece of steak was actually potatoes. When I got my food, the steak was overcooked. I flagged down our server and brought this to her attention. She said that she would replace it. She was about to take the whole plate and I told her that all I that needed to get replaced was the steak. She brought me back perfectly cooked pieces of beef in about five minutes. I really appreciated this because I was so hungry. Besides the overcooked steak, I felt like my overall experience was meh. Parking in that area is a challenge. I thought that by coming on Sunday, where there was more available parking, that it would be easier to do so. Everybody else seemed to have the same idea so parking was still a challenge. I appreciate that you are able to seat yourself. However, we waited almost 45 minutes from the time we ordered until we received our food. I know they were extremely busy but I think a 45 minute wait for food is a bit much much. I had the pleasure of visiting this place with my husband. The breakfast is honestly one of the best I've had from the farm to table food to the unique coffee was a 10 out of 10 experience. They even have coffee beans you can buy in bulk and enjoy at home they offer a wide array of coffee from Ethiopian to all types of South American beans. They have gluten free pancakes made with corn meal. No alcoholic beverages are served. I ordered the rosemary potato breakfast with a side of bacon. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Needed some salt and pepper but they were tasty. I asked for soft scrambled eggs and they were so perfectly soft! I explored The Orphan Breakfast House, my first time trying this place out. I rarely travel into downtown/East Sacramento vicinity but I was having breakfast/brunch with a couple of friends and this was a new place for me to check out. I explored the menu the night before just to see what they had available, which is pretty good to me. I opted for the Orphan French Toast, which is actually very delicious. It is filling and if you eat very small portions like me, you'll be getting a lot of it to-go. I opted for the berries/sauces on the side because I personally don't like messy food, generally speaking. As I enjoyed my French toast, I also decided to order something different to-go for later. I chose the Breakfast Burritos without black beans. What I enjoyed about these is that these burritos are small portions, but also more than enough to fill up on. The food was good. The ambiance of the cafe was cute, but we opted to sit outside in their outdoor setting which felt comfortable and social with the exception of their less desirable chairs. After a while, sitting on hard chairs hurt. The service staff was very nice but there were times when they forgot to bring a few things that my table requested, but by the time they remembered, our meal(s) were nearly consumed. We let a lot of it slide because they're human and things happen. A couple of other less favorable things I was somewhat disappointed in were: 1. They only accept cash/checks. This can be a catch 22 because not everyone carries cash on them in 2024. You wonder why the cafe doesn't accept credit/debit cards, but you also don't care to ask why either. You just accept it and carry on. 2. They don't split checks. We did not learn of this until after we asked the wait staff and he told us they don't split checks at all. Why? Again, I don't bother asking and that's okay. 3. The cafe is very small and parking can be a pain being that it's located in East Sacramento. Although, a nice area in general, it is crammed with the sounds of food and conversation happening all around; especially on weekends. Be prepared to park on the street and walk to the cafe. Despite some things I did not care for, it's a cafe I would dine at again in any future. You take the good and less favorable with anything you do, or places you explore. The curry was nothing special and I would not order again. The rancheros had good flavor but the tortillas are oddly very chewy. A nice neighborhood spot I came in early on a Monday, and the place wasn't that busy. I hear it can get very busy on the weekends. Parking can be a bit tricky. Be sure you don't park on the street in a residents only area. (Not enforced on Sundays. ). Their webpage has information on parking. The place was very clean, has indoor and outdoor seating, and everybody was friendly and helpful. They have dishes that will please the carnivore, the vegetarian, and the vegan. Gluten free items are also available. I chose the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, and they were delicious! A very generous portion, with plenty of blueberries. The texture of the cakes was perfect. You also get *real* maple syrup. They came à la carte , as do other items on the menu, so I had a couple of eggs in addition to my pancakes. They were perfectly over easy as per my request I liked the coffee, But they do charge a dollar for refills. my server asked me if I wanted a refill on my coffee, without telling me about the charge for the refill. I wish they would've told me. It's only a buck, but it's the principle of the thing. Tax is built in to the prices on the menu. What you see, is what you pay. They don't take plastic, but they do take checks and cash. They have an ATM that does not charge a surcharge, but you may be charged by your bank. there's a note on the ATM that says what most of the major banks charge. Was taken to Orphan as a surprise for the first time this morning and we were seated immediately upon entering. The staff is very cordial and fairly attentive, it has a great ambience, very calm and homey. I loved everything we ordered and my Gluten Free blueberry cornmeal pancakes were AMAZING. I usually go for the Papas Loco, Breakfast tamales, or Platos Verde, but everything I've tried has been good. There are good options noted for gluten free which is great. Today I got the tamales and a single order of the blueberry cornmeal pancakes (I like that your can order a half order and pancakes can also be ordered gluten free). The pancake was so good. My friends got the Avocado scramble and the French toast and they loved their food as well. Great local favorite.
