This is my new favorite spot in Sacramento. It feels like you're downtown, but you don't have to deal with the downtown traffic. The service was great, but make sure to bring cash because they only accept cash payments. They also have a free ATM in case you need cash, and it's no cost to use. The waitress was fantastic. Service was relatively quick, and I learned that arriving before 10 AM on weekends is the best way to avoid long lines. The food was super fresh--probably one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while in the Sacramento area.
This place is very popular, so expect a long wait time to be seated! We waited about 25 minutes for a table for 2 on a Monday morning. The staff were very friendly and continuously checked up on us throughout the meal. The food was very good and decently priced. The prices on the menu include taxes. Also, this place is cash only! They have a no-fee ATM at the door. The decor was nice! I didn't like that the water carafe they gave us was lukewarm.
A family favorite! Things to know before you go: - only accepts cash and checks! - no ketchup! Favorites - Dragon potatoes: carnitas with potatoes (tip: ask for extra crispy). Includes fresh tortillas, sour cream, cilantro, and black beans (I recommend them on the side if you want to keep the carnitas and potatoes crispy). - Breakfast Tamales: I really enjoy this dish for a lighter fare. Fresh green salsa and sweet corn flavor. Includes tortillas and sour cream (I also swap out the beans for crispy potatoes) - Rosemary Bread: get it as a side or as a loaf! Excellent toasted - There speciality pancakes: the savory cake is bacon and jalapeño. The blueberry cornmeal pancakes are my favorite for a lightly sweet treat. The banana blackberry is also my daughter's favorite. All three are great! Reminder... come with cash!
This brunch spot was highly recommended so I made my way over to East Sacramento to try it out. I typically am not a person to wait in line but since I'm not familiar with the area, I didn't feel like trying to figure out a different place to go. The wait was only about 20 minutes, but I chose to wait for an indoor table because I was a little chilly so it ended up being slightly longer. I ordered the Rosemary breakfast and asked for my eggs, scrambled with cheese. It came out looking so good, and they actually made like a little omelette with my eggs and cheese, it was just lovely and fluffy. The rosemary bread with the butter and the blackberry purée was unreal. I could drink a cup of that purée. I was a bit disappointed in the potatoes because the salt level was astronomical. I'm someone who loves salt and it seemed like all the really crispy spots were saturated, burn my tongue level of salt. I was going to say something to the waitress, but she didn't come back until I was almost done eating. The coffee they use was from a local roaster and I went for a light roast pour over coffee and it was phenomenal. Beautifully nuanced flavors. Parking around here is rough. I parked in the neighborhood on the street behind the restaurant and I did not see any no parking signs but got a parking ticket anyway. I even looked before I left, but I saw nothing! When I got back and saw the ticket I was like WTH. I finally found the resident only parking sign about a block away on the other side of the driveway on that part of the street. Bummer.
I have officially been here now a few times for breakfast/brunch and I am so glad it was put on my radar by friends and family. Orphan is an adorable and delicious brunch spot in East Sac only minutes (literally a two minute drive, 10 minute walk) from McKinley Park. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor (covered) seating, has a very small parking lot (3 spots), and is cash only. They have an ATM inside and the prices on the menu already include tax. Parking can be a little difficult on the streets due to two hour limits and certain areas requiring a permit, but we've always found a spot nearby. There also can be a wait when it's busy, 20-30 minutes. The food is so good here, very filling portions, and comes out rather quickly. So far with my family we've tried the dragon potatoes, breakfast tamales, grande breakfast burrito, soy chorizo breakfast, and naked cakes. Everything has been delicious, I don't think you can order anything wrong here. Our favorite has been the dragon potatoes because of the rich flavorful carnitas! The service has also been great, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. People here also bring their dogs and are sat outside. Definitely recommend trying this place out!
Omg!!!! Amazing breakfast in East Sac!!! I thought Los Gatos cafe in LG (uptown and downtown) didn't have a possible relative until Orphan. If you think you know the ultimate breakfast place in Sac, you need to head to Orphan. Fabulous plethora of sweet and savory choices priced reasonably where you can dine with a friend and pay less than $35 (including tip) for an awesome tasting breakfast. Street parking for two hours is plentiful and establishment is cash or check only.
One of my greatest disappointments in life is a restaurant that doesn't reservations. Unfortunately, Orphan is one of those places. They are also cash/ check only which is def something to consider, especially since i never carry cash anymore. the service was wonderful. they squeezed us in in less than an hour on a late sunday morning for 6 people. cute vibes and love the neighborhood it's located in. they are well know for their rosemary bread, so i obviously had to sample that. it was yummy. it was a brioche style. it actually worked well with the jam, which i wasn't expecting. i had the dragon potatoes which came with rosemary potatoes topped with carnitas, black beans, jack cheese, salsa, tomatoes, scallions & cilantro, served with sour cream, avocado, grilled jalapeños, & two flour tortillas. this was my ideal breakfast dish because it was more lunch adjacent, there weren't eggs, and it had lots of different flavors in it. the carnitas were delicious and really added to the flavor. loved the salsa and the black bean addition. i wish they did smaller tortillas though. we also tried the gluten free pancakes. i was pleasantly surprised by how fluffy they were for being gluten free. perfect amount of sweetness without being overpowering.
My daughter and I came here for the June special. We came kind of early so there was no wait, it was also on a Friday morning. Service was great as always. Food always comes out hot, fresh and so quickly. We devoured our food. It was amazing. I love their coffee and salsa. We also ate outside which was perfect considering the weather. This place never disappoints.
Had to come try the blueberry cornmeal pancakes! They are gluten free and taste really good!! Not as desne or grainy as I expected - rather they are light and fluffy with lots of fresh blueberries. The coffee featured is Black Sails Coffee (great strong diner style coffee). My pal had steak and eggs (also good!). Definitely a great neighborhood diner. Only caveat is parking is limited in the parking lot and in street parking so avoid peak times.
My children brought me here for brunch to celebrate my 50th birthday. This was my first time and let me tell you they did not disappoint. I've read reviews that the wait might be long and it's always super packed. We must of came on a good day because we literally waited 10 minutes. I ordered the blueberry cornmeal pancakes (not pictured) and they were so yummy. I added 2 eggs over hard and bacon. It was a lot of food that I wasn't able to finish it and I took it home. We also ordered dragon potatoes, artichoke scramble, avocado scramble, steak and potatoes, naked pancakes, and latin breakfast. My family enjoyed every bite! Our waitress kept checking on us and making sure we were okay. She was friendly and always had a smile on her face. I wish I would of asked her name. The place is small but cozy. Love the decor and seating z we were sat in the corner by the window. Such a cute little spot. Oh and make sure you bring cash because they don't except cards but they do have an atm machine.
Nice little café tucked into an East Sacramento neighborhood. Aside from keeping an eye on parking and remembering it's cash only, there's really nothing to worry about. The café offers outdoor seating and a surprisingly interesting menu with plenty of delicious options. I'm not sure what they're doing to their potatoes, but they were seriously good -- easily a standout. A charming neighborhood spot that's definitely worth a visit. BB
My food was really good. I added bananas to their blueberry pancake because I didn't want the other fruit and I got a side of scrambled eggs with cheese and green onions. Their food was so good and fresh, you can really taste the quality. I wish they had non pork protein options like turkey bacon, chicken apple sausage or any poultry breakfast sausage. I'm shocked with it being 2025 some places still don't have non pork /non red meat options with so many people being vegan or vegetarian now. However my service was great- the food was fire and I loved the berry compote/jam and my homegirls potatoes and toast was delicious. This place is cash only so fyi and parking can be a little tough. This place is pretty popular and I see why
I've been wanting to try Orphan for years and somehow never got around to it, turns out I've really been missing out! We arrived on a Saturday around 10:00 a.m. and were quoted a 30 minute wait for a party of three. I appreciated how accurate they were with the wait time; our table was ready right at 10:30. Considering how busy it was, the customer service was excellent. After looking over the menu, I went with the Two Plus, which comes with two pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I upgraded the pancakes to the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, and I'm so glad I did. The portion sizes were huge. My scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, not overdone at all. The pancakes were massive but surprisingly light and not too heavy; I could only finish one because of the size. The bacon was cooked just right- crispy with a slight chew. Overall, I would highly recommend Orphan for the quality of food, reasonable prices, and great service. It's a perfect brunch spot, especially if you plan to stroll the neighborhood or walk around McKinley Park afterward. .
Parking 3/5 Due to the location parking is really hard. Please read signs before parking around the residential areas as well. Restaurant 5/5 Indoor and outdoor seatings. Love the corner outdoor seatings that is under a pergola and plants wrapping around it. Such a refreshing touch Customer Service 5/5 upbeat services while slammed back. Check on the tables in rotation. it. Ambiance 5/5 Love how quiet it was but loud with all the ins and outs (don't know how to explain it). Everyone was in their own conversations and Bathroom 3.5/5 (index bathroom) went to the last stall with the urinal and it just smells horrible. The bathroom was clean but the smell was super strong Food 5/5 The food looked amazing and my brunch was amazing as well. The pictures says it all Looking for great service, both indoor and outdoor, great food and one of the most chillest vibes look no further. Orphan is here to serve and dish up some great food and area for bonding for you fellow foodies. Located right at corner and an amazing neighborhood you find this beautiful set up next to the famous Rosie's BBQ. Totally recommend the place. The price is super reasonable. The food here is excellent but I have to give a low rating for the service. My friends and I went early to get a table and our server, while sweet, more or less abandoned us. We asked several times for things and never received them, and when it came time to get the check we had to ask four times and ask several different people before it finally made its way to us. While I understand things can get busy, I don't feel that was the case here because the restaurant was not overly packed. Still, everyone in my group was very satisfied with our dishes! Stop by here if you don't mind waiting 45+ minute for French toast I guess. read more

Orphan is one of the restaurants that I have seen continually recommended for breakfast and brunch. Despite living close by, I have never remembered to drop by. Luckily, today I finally went with a friend visiting from out of town and wanted a nice sit down breakfast/brunch option. We came by at 11am and while the patio was nearly completely full, we were able to get a table inside immediately. Orphan's interior is very upscale California quirky and makes me think of the eclectic designs found in places like Santa Cruz. Service was quick, friendly, and within minutes we had chilled waters and hot coffee in hand while we perused the menu. Recommendations I had seen for Orphan highlighted their French Toast along with their house-made rosemary bread and rosemary potatoes. My wife ordered the French Toast and it was delightful! Griddled exterior on the toast with a sweet custard-y center. The fruit puree in combination with fresh strawberries and blueberries helped to brighten the dish without adding any more sweetness so it felt very balanced yet delectable. My wife did not even opt to have it with maple syrup. For myself, I was deeply intrigued by the Savory Cakes, which were extremely fluffy buttermilk pancakes with bacon, jalapeños, and jack cheese folded in. I have made savory waffles in the past, but never thought about doing the same with pancakes. Orphan's Savory Cakes has inspired me to try my hand at the dish. These pancakes were probably some of the lightest, fluffiest pancakes I've had in years and the sweet, savory, and spicy flavors were enlightening! Add in topping the cakes with pure, maple syrup and you should be as close to heaven as I was devouring this stack. Our friend ordered the Rosemary Breakfast (but I forgot to take a picture as I was so infatuated with my Savory Cakes ) and I was able to try a bit of the house-made bread and potatoes. Rosemary in my opinion is a double-edged sword to use because it can easily take over a dish, but the team at Orphan have a deft hand and both the bread and potatoes have a great balance. While the bread was delicious, I cannot stop thinking about those potatoes and the absolute perfection that is the exterior crisping with the interior fluffiness. Now I know why everyone says to get the potatoes. I have future designs on their Grande Breakfast Burrito because there's no way it can't be good if it includes the rosemary potatoes All-in-all I know that Orphan will be on my shortlist of places to recommend to anyone coming in to Sac and I am excited for my next visit to try the burrito! read more

Super good spot for breakfast food. They only take cash or check, but we saw this on the website before going. There is an ATM inside if needed. The iced coffee was super good, the dragon potatoes also delicious! Sausage and eggs were good as well. The steak and eggs was ok, but not as good as other items. They make their own bread, that was delicious! We got a side and it came with absolutely delicious jam! Photo does not do it justice. Service was pretty good - they were busy but we got seated and served in a reasonable time. Ambiance was cafe style and buzzing with a positive energy from people enjoying brunch (and a birthday group). They only serve breakfast on weekends, so not sure what lunch menu is like. We all enjoyed the meal and I'll definitely come back if in the area. Recommend. read more

I wanted a nice place to have breakfast before my flight and Orphan didn't disappoint. Parking is a little rough, but I parked in the neighborhood and walked in. CASH only! Open 365 days from 7 AM to 2 PM! They do have an ATM inside the restaurant if you don't have cash on you. Make sure to bring your patience too ;-) I feel like there is always a wait, but once you sit down the food come out fast! Artichoke Scramble The eggs are fluffy with just the right amount of cheese. It comes with rosemary potatoes and rosemary bread. Banana Blackberry Pancakes Three buttermilk pancakes with bananas and blackberries folded into their cornmeal pancakes. What is there not to like!? Great menu! It was hard to decide to one item. My friend and I split these two dishes and it was best of both worlds. You got the savory and sweet! Excellent coffee! I had the Heritage Medium Roast with oak milk. My friend told me that they grind their coffee in-house. I can taste the difference. One weird thing is they do not have ketchup! What? How do you serve potatoes but not have ketchup? Not a big deal, but I do like to eat potatoes with ketchup. Oh well! read more
I really enjoy Orphan, it's a great breakfast spot with consistently well-seasoned dishes, lots of rosemary. The potatoes are the standout, perfectly crispy with a rosemary flavor bomb that might be the best I've had anywhere. I also love that you can order single pancakes or French toast, which makes it easier when everything looks good and you don't want to commit to just one dish. The main downside is parking, it's a real struggle, especially during busy hours. The menu also doesn't offer a ton on the way of protein which can be a downside for some but maybe don't come here for country fried steak and ham. Also worth noting it's cash-only, though there is a free ATM on site. Solid spot overall and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Vegan option available. Chanced upon this trendy cute restaurant while visiting Sacramento. An amazing and ecl electic breakfast/lunch menu. They have thier own unique and tasty takes on standard items. We had the Papas Loco and the Dragon Potatoes veganized. Both are delicious and filling. Our waitress, Serena, is such a joy. She could not be more warm and welcoming. The ambiance is chill and relaxing with soft alternative music in the background. We hit this place 2 days in a row...once was not enough. Such a great find. Will def be back the next time we cone to Sacramento. read more

Yum, yum, yum! I hadn't been here in years, but since I've been working in the area, I was so happy to rediscover that Orphan (and Roxie) are just a few steps away. Lately, I've been getting my orders to-go, and every time I walk in, I'm greeted with a warm smile. The portions are generous and enough for two meals. Everything is made with fresh, vibrant ingredients that taste absolutely delicious. Yes, it can be a little on the pricier side, but the quality and quantity of food make it worth it. read more
The food here always tastes high quality and fresh! I love their pancakes, all of them. The savory are so incredible and nice change to a traditional sweeter pancake, I get no jalapeño to keep it non spicy. The bacon is a go to as well and crunchy and thicker, and maybe the best item is coffee with a huge portion of homemade whipped cream. The only 2 negative things is that it's cash or check only and the parking is awful. Despite a long waitlist on weekend mornings it moves relatively quickly. Very yummy! Cute place, good food, not the cheapest. Services was OK, if not a bit slow. I am deducting a star for cash only. Yes, I know they have a free ATM, but it's 2025. Before you jump on me for complaining about that, I can tell you that it costs about 3% to accept credit cards. I have no idea how much an ATM costs, or how much they cover in ATM fees to offer the ATM for free to customers (because nothing is really free in life), but I can't imagine it ends up much cheaper. And in the meantime, you've made me (and based on other reviews, other customers) grumpy... over 3%. I see some of the other reviews had complaints about parking. It's mostly street parking in a mostly residential neighborhood. No issues there, plenty of open spaces. read more

We came during peak brunch time and we had a party of 9 so we had a little bit of a wait time as expected. The waiter Serena herself came outside to give us an update on our table, once seating us she quickly came to start our drinks and order she memorized all of our order perfect no mistakes ! Amazing place, such good vibes from all the staff & the food was amazing. Thank you Serena and staff definitely recommend!!! read more
I ordered the banana blackberry pancakes with two over medium eggs and bacon, everything was absolutely fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised by the banana, blackberry pancakes, not only were they light and fluffy, but extremely flavorful! Omg the compote really hit it off. This was my first time ever having bananas and blackberries together and it did not disappoint. I ordered three DoorDash, so I cannot comment on the service or the ambience, however, my order was ready very fast. read more

WOW WOW WOW. We drove from Lincoln (45 minutes) after reading the review for the place it was TOTALLY worth the drive. We ordered the breakfast tamales, dragon potatoes, and a single banana blackberry pancake. The breakfast tamales were delicious! They had a slight sweetness to them and paired really well with the accompaniments on the plate. The dragon potatoes were packed with flavor and come with two home made tortillas. I made a breakfast burrito and said mmmmmmmm with every single bite. The banana blackberry pancake is just divine. What an absolutely delicious meal this was. I doubt there is anything on the menu that is yummy! 10/10 I would eat here again read more

it's the tamale breakfast , but when I cut into the tamale it was frozen in parts and warm in other parts . So it was clearly reheated incorrectly then drenched in a very sour green sauce that is meant to cover up it was not freshly cooked . For what you charge for the meals on your menu ; do better ... and care when you're told there's something wrong with the meal. Instead of looking at us like it's an "us problem.." I paid to take 3-4 bites of a terrible meal , cause I did not want to be that person that complains, but I just gave up trying to eat, and we paid $40 for a painful experience . read more
This is the it-place for breakfast on a weekend morning. Parking will be a challenge to find, and you might have to wait to be seated, but the food is worth it. If you're in the mood for Pancakes, you really can't do any better than either the Savory Cakes or the Blueberry pancakes. The Rosemary bread usually comes with the egg dishes and is very special. If the weather is pleasant, choose outdoor seating for the best experience. The tables are separated enough to give you the space you need with your group. read more

Service: Wait time just depends when you go, took me and my amiguita 15ish mins to get seated. Our server had a lot of tables, so some items were forgotten at first but then remembered. It happens, and she was probably the kindest one there with cool tattoos! Food: The Rosemary Potato's are a must! They are very savory and delicious. I wished they served more :( I felt like they poured a fat amount and took some out, and then-some. Like 1/4 of a cup :/ The look liquified jam - WOW! Hella good on the white toasty bread! the egg tasted like egg, nothing special - Orphan Cooks don't be afraid of that butta They don't have ketchup btw just hot sauce Dip your potatos in maple syrup - I'm being for real, it's a trip and it's good. Amiguita always gets her avocado scrambled as her go-to! She recommends it, but I went for something a lil more basic :) The Vibe Gay! Both meanings here :) love it I think the outside is a lot prettier than sitting inside tbh the vines are so earthy and pretty. Orphan is located in a neighborhood that gives it a home cooked meal vibe. There is limited street parking with various day and time restrictions but it shouldn't be hard to find a spot. There is no online reservation so you'll have to show up to get a spot in line. For a party of 6 on a Sunday around 11:30am, it was about a 30-45min wait. There is somewhat limited seating as there is only ~6 tables of different sizes inside and a handful of small tables outside. The menu was very limited in the variety of options compared to other brunch spots. The July's special menu did peak my interest though with their Smoked Lox Bagel. I'm a fan of smoked salmon so this was my choice for brunch. It was decent. A fair amount of smoked salmon but the bagel was on the tougher side. Other than that, it's typical. For $18? I'd say that's pretty expensive. Some things to note is that there is no price mark for monthly specials. Why not put the price there and save the workers the time to respond to every table asking how much they are? One thing that stuck out was how we weren't informed about the charge for extra for vanilla custard on the pancake or even the jam. Funny enough that the house made salsa was free. My friend asked for medium rare steak and was served well done. There was a bunch of flies hovering around our table which was irritating. All in all, I didn't really have a good experience and so I'm discouraged from coming again. read more
This is the best breakfast in Sacramento, hands down! They have both inside and outside seating, dogs are allowed, parking is usually doable, the service is friendly, feels like a super cozy, locals, family vibe. We just love it! The three best dishes, though everything we've tried is superb, the Dragon Potatoes, Blueberry Cornmeal pancakes and the Savory Pancake. So much flavor! read more
The atmosphere inside is super cozy and they are open 365 days a year, that's insane hats off to them for that but the breakfast itself was decent. The bread was a little dry, looking back at the pictures I think maybe they just forgot to give me butter with mine as well. But I should have asked, I did in the end ask for jam and they provided me with some. The rosemary bread itself had great taste but yea just a little dry. I think with butter it would have been better so just ask, don't forget like I did. The potatoes were quite tasty as well, but I found it a little odd that the establishment has no ketchup. I really would have loved some, but the waitress did offer some salsa so that was nice. Coffee was decent as well, but I don't think the light roast was my thing. The waitress was a gem though and brought me milk alternative which was so nice of her. I'll deff come again to try some other things, because based on other reviews I hear the pancakes are great. Very excited to come back and try something different, everything does feel quite fresh and the atmosphere is quite quaint. So I'll come back for sure! Bring cash when you come check this place out or there is an ATM on site. read more

Do they serve organic eggs?
I don't know. But the service was not good and they only take cash. There is a ATM machine in the restaurant because of this issue. We had I hopes.
Do they take reservations?
No. When I tried to get reservations for April 17 for our party of 7 I was told that would not be possible as they are first come, first served. Know that up to 6 people can sit together but for us, we were seated in 2 groups of 3 and 4 in close…
Are you open for outside dining these days?
Yes, outdoor dining is available and you are given the option of inside or outside dining.
How much of the menu is organic?
Do they do reservations or Call Ahead seating?
They don't. On the weekends you have to be prepared to wait. They do however let you call in an order to go!
