Hidden in the corner of a tiny plaza off University Drive. Very surprised to see a courtyard sitting area with a few vintage tables next to a stone fountain producing a tranquil sound as water trickles down near a woven patio swing with a canvas top shade. The walk up window had signs strongly advertising that they serve coffee. The window was not ajar and a few peeks inside with no contact from the four employees on the other side do not sure if the window was actually active for taking orders for thirsty customers. Forced to go inside and glad I did. The entire café was decorated in vintage Cuban-American heritage including a 1950s red Chevrolet transformed into a dining booth with black & white vinyl seat covers. The flooring continued the theme with large black & white squares. Each table had a diecast vintage car in addition to an impressive collection of them on the wall. It was not crowded but hectic at the counter with a few orders but the smell of cooked potatoes on the flat grill was amazing. Ordered a cortadito from the double chrome coffee machine that was ready quickly and sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the strong roasted scent of the Pilon Cuban coffee. The gender neutral bathroom was spotlesd and also had the vintage theme with black & white square flooring. Will return for a sub sandwich on my next visit. read more

I was at the medical supply store when I saw the sign for Sub Cafe. I remember reading Yelp and seeing some reviews and decided to go in. It's fun when you walk in. It's totally a 50's style diner with a cutout of Elvis, and pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the . The booths look like car seats. I liked it! The restaurant is not huge, but they have big booths (7-8) that hold 2-4 people on each side. There was a line before me, about 6 men, and 2 cooks behind the counter. You order and they make it, then ask if you want to eat in or take out. I wanted to eat inside (although there are a few covered tables outside). It's very clean inside and a nice low key atmosphere. The cooks have an established routine. They can toast and grill and do both at once. One of the cooks apologized for the wait, but it was fine. They are both older men but quick and very pleasant. I ordered the ham and cheese with scrambled eggs on Cuban toast and it was delicious! Ham was salty enough to taste it and the Cuban bread was so fresh! It also was way bigger than I thought it would be! I could only finish half - but it was delicious. They serve breakfast all day and also have hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, gyros and few other things. All types of coffee from cuban to American. All in all I definitely would go back. I saw some Yelp reviews that said they had changed and were not very good before, but I disagree. read more

We've been coming to Subcafe for years! On every other visit, I would give 5 stars, but today, we waited for over 45 minutes for our two sandwiches to be made. Normally, we order our subs to go, but today, we had some free time and the weather was beautiful, so we decided to sit out on the patio. The server was so sweet and took our order shortly after being seated, but then we just waited and waited. I'm not sure what the issue was since it wasn't that busy, but regardless, the sub I ordered (hot zesty Italian) and the double smash burger my husband ordered were amazing. The burger wasn't actually a smash burger, so it ended up being two huge patties, but still delicious. It came with seasoned fries which I also really enjoyed. read more

This has been around for a long time but this is the first time that we've eaten here. There are 2 entrances; the entrance to the right is for dine-in and the entrance to the left is for take out. They also have outdoor seating if you prefer to sit outside which is what we did during our visit. My husband and I split a Philly Cheese Steak #2 which came with Onions, Green Peppers and Mushrooms. We were surprised at how delicious it was and that the bread was so soft! I don't know what seasoning they used but it was very flavorful. We were looking for a place for lunch and happened upon The Original Sub Cafe. We are happy we did. Service was perfect. Our server was friendly and made sure to ask all questions to make sure our order was perfect. The space is combo take out and sit down. It is clean and has highlight reviews on the ceiling. There is a giant car booth - which while kitch, it takes up a lot of space and if they are busy it can pose a problem. I had a tuna sub and an amazing cafe con leche. The tuna sub was fresh and not mayonnaisey tasting. My cafe con leche was the perfect temp and level of sugar. They offer 3 sizes of the cafe con leche and 2 sizes of the subs. I had the 8 inch and took 1/2 home. My daughter had an egg and cheese sandwich, which she loved and a can of Arizona Iced tea. My husband had a Cuban sandwich. He said it was nicely packed with meat and he ended up taking 1/2 home. We also ordered a side of fries. The pricing is very reasonable. Service was great. I don't know about the name, The Original Sub Café. This is definitely not a sub shop. It's more like a Cuban Cafè, but with a menu that has a nice amount of options. This is a very cool place. It's awesomely decorated. It's like a throwback late fifties early sixties diner. There is a nice amount of cool memorabilia everywhere, which includes the booths and the table tops. Although it takes up quite a bit of space, there is even a fifty-seven Chevy Belair cut away for a booth. It kind of reminds me of a restaurant in Disney, but with better quality food. Our server, she was great. She had a wonderful personality, she was friendly, really helpful and she made the experience even better. As for what we had. My daughter had an egg sandwich and a giant can of Arizona tea. "She inhaled it!" My wife ordered a café con lettche first, not only was it the largest café con lettche I have ever seen, but she said it was incredibly good! Then she got an eight inch tuna sandwich and a side of fries. Since I don't like tuna, I didn't try it, but she said it was really good. I did have some of the fries. They came out burning hot and were they good. I had a tough time deciding. It was between choosing a Cuban steak sandwich, a Media Noche, or a Cuban sandwich. I ended up going with the Cuban sandwich, which was a choice. I got the twelve inch with extra pickles. At first glance, I thought it wasn't pressed enough. Nope, it was just loaded with meat. Oh yeah, was it good. Next 6 think I'm going to try the Cuban steak sandwich. Oh, I almost forgot, no can soda, they have a soda fountain. Really impressed with this place. It's tucked away in the corner of a strip mall with a few other shops nearby. This place has been around awhile- good sign! I figured since it was named after the restaurant it would be amazing but unfortunately it wasn't. I just feel the quality of the eggs, sausage and bacon that I couldn't stomach more than one bite was not good. The people at the tables near us really enjoyed their food. It was busy and I could tell by the number of returning customers that greeted him (with one bringing him a bottle of wine, and two ladies identifying themselves from behind their masks as "we are the Atlanta customers"), that this place was worth the wait--even getting back to the office late. Standing in line, I perused the area and immediately the red & white classic car booth came into view. Since I mentioned that I'd soon be late to the office, Ozzie quickly handed me the best gyro I've ever had--particularly because the Greek pita was the freshest and the lamb? Yum!! One of the worst experiences ever. My wife bought 3 subs and fries from them, A cuban and 2 Philly cheesesteaks. She asked for no mayo or tomatoes on the Cuban and asked if they could put it on the side, the cook flat out told her no. After they messed up the order and didnt put mayo or tomato on the Philly cheesteaks and put the mayo and tomato on the cuban and then not giving the fries. When we called they told us to come in and they'd make it right. They only gave us the fries and they were cold and said we should have brought the cuban back. Stopped by for breakfast this morning with my boyfriend. We recently moved to the Davie area and were recommended to try Sub Cafe. I was fascinated by their vintage decor and the cool table with the corvette seats. Our server was very nice and they have a large menu offering various breakfast dishes and subs/wraps. The subs looked delicious and I would love to come back and try them. The Cuban toast and pancakes were yummy and the prices are not bad. The coffee was amazing. They also have a little window to order outside to go. Definitely will be coming back regularly for the Cuban coffee and toast. read more

Staff works with there head down, guessing to avoid eye contact. Staff looks to be busy while only servicing 3 tables and avoid 2 people at the counter. Old man walks in after everyone waiting for service speaks Spanish and received faster service. Disappointing experience. Was up early this morning and decided it would be a nice change to go out for breakfast. I was in the area and remembered a little place that always had great food and service. Cafe window was open, door was open and a man was prepping area outside. I walked in and a man behind the counter looked at me like a deer in headlights saying nothing. I waited a moment and asked, "Are you open?" He looked at me, again with a vacant expression, then at the clock on the wall and said, "No, 8" It was 7:55 so I said' "No problem and sat outside" Someone else walks up and picks up their coffee order at the window. I guess they weren't open, 'for me'. A big part of eating out is the customer service, and I have worked in the service industry all of my life. A warm greeting of, "we are still getting ready and will be open in 5 minutes but if you would like to grab a seat, you will be my first customer of the day. Thank you" and I would have happily waited, feeling my patronage is important. A response of "No, 8" means I am bothering you by being a customer so I'll just go home and make my own coffee and breakfast. I can't comment on food quality since I didn't have any. read more
