    Catfish breakfast
    Hollis C.

While waiting on my vehicle to be serviced my wife and I decided to grab breakfast at this location. After already trying the son's location (Just Spoons) we decided to try the original. We both had the southern breakfast fried catfish. I chose mine with cheese grits and my wife had home fries. The food was ok, it reminded me of MLK restaurant in liberty city. There was really nothing that stood out and when compared to the son's restaurant it was sort of a downgrade. The service could of been better as we had to remind the waitress that we were missing food items. If your in the area and wanna grab a quick breakfast then this is a spot you could go to.

Smothered pork chops with potatoes and eggs and no biscuit :-(.

We have been going to Spoons for a while, at least 15 years. This is Southern-style Black cooking at its best. Yes, that includes heavy gravies, large portions, and probably lots of not too healthy, yet delicious meals. But they are always served with great hospitality. Today's visit for take-out lunch was near closing time (1:40 p.m.). And we were curtly informed that rice and vegetables are no longer offered, just grits and fries. There are no more lunch specials, just regular prices. And they were out of grits. We didn't mind the absence of the grits, because we don't like grits anyway and "smothered" works best with rice or mashed potatoes. (It seems to me that rice is the cheaper and easier side dish to make.) We expressed our disappointment and accepted the fries and chose biscuits instead of toast. The lady did warm up as I insisted on chatting her up. When we got home and dived into our smothered pork and smothered chicken, we were greeted with a very salty gravy (more salty than usual). Looking to tame that saltiness with a fluffy biscuit, we discovered that we didn't have any; they were missing (something we look forward to with the grape jelly). I never did understand the accompaniments with the meals. Everything seems to come with eggs and toast or a biscuit. (I usually end up putting away my scrambled eggs for the next day's breakfast.) I love the liver and onions, salmon patties, smothered anything, homemade pancakes and biscuits, and fried catfish. I wish Yelp would add 1/2 stars, because this should be a 3.5 star rating. While we understand that restaurants have had to pare services and food, it seems like some of the best parts have been trimmed at Spoon's.

Best Biscuits I have ever had in my life, the 2x2x2 was just the cherry on top. Definitely will come back.

Best biscuits I have ever had. Absolutely amazing, super soft with a nice flaky crust , MUST TRY WHEN YOU COME HERE. I will be back.

Clean restaurant in a non-descript strip mall. Waitress was new, but very friendly. We are two big guys and neither of us finished our meals as they were large portions. Flavors were good, home fried potatoes good and the sausage gravy(the true sign of a good restaurant) was on point! If we lived in the area, we would be back!

This place was a hidden gem with so much history. I was happy to support this Business. It felt like I was apart of the community. I found out this was a pop Lukas spot for FAMU students and alumn. As supporting black owned business with my sorority so I was happy to find this spot.

Looking for home cooked breakfast this is the place , location not great but food is fresh I like the smothered chicken breakfast. Service not fast but community friendly, they support the local high schools and even I see they employ some of them .

My husband and I decided to dine at this restaurant on Black Friday, while waiting for his car to be serviced. We both ordered dishes from the Country Breakfast menu with fried catfish. The food was delicious; well-seasoned and fresh. In visiting this restaurant, I can definitely see the foundation that paved the way for the his son's establishment. Good food and happy clientele; definitely caters to a significant number of regulars.

Spoon's is a black owned business. Small casual eatery serving authentic southern cuisine. The restaurant is situated within a strip of other stores with plenty of parking. On a busy day you may not have close parking. There are booths and tables available. Seat yourself when you come in. I ordered fried shrimp and tilapia with grits with smothered gravy and a biscuit. It was delicious every bite! Some favorites are: Smothered shrimp and grits Chicken and waffles Georgia Sausage Salmon pattie Big omelettes Just to name a few.

This place gave me a soulful feel. The service was good and fast. All the food was served hot. They were practicing social distancing. Biscuits and gravy were perfect. Give them a try you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Food? Phenomenal. Service? Busy, but consistent. Probably could fit more tables in there, but I understand why they don't. Seated quickly. Feed soon after that. No complaints. Will be back.

As odd as it is to go during the day and have brunch, I would say it is the move. You pull into a plaza where everything else is closed except for this business and say hi to the security guard stationed at the entrance of the place---at 11 AM---to walk into a lounge beautifully decorated with green walls, floral accents and a disco ball. It is clear that the majority of patrons come much later in the day, like after 9 PM, to get bottle service listening to a DJ or any other performer. This would explain why the air conditioning was cranked so high, to accommodate the bodies and electricity that would pack the place much later. Our server didn't crack a smile but immediately brought us water after we asked and rounded back twice to take our order. Like I said, going during the day when there are only about 5 other parties dining seems to be the move for prompt service and food preparation. The dishes came out super hot and fresh. The Creole Seafood Omelette ($26) was chock full of well seasoned shrimp and lobster and cheese, with a creamy roux on the side that was good to occasionally dip a bite into but wasn't necessary all the time. The potatoes that came on the side were just the right amount of crispy while leaving some heartiness to them. The Fried Chicken and Waffles ($26) included flavorful fried chicken with breading that didn't quit when you tore it or cut into it. The cool part of this dish is the choice you have of the waffle it comes with. The Cookies and Cream Waffles should be your go-to. They were topped with the chocolate cookie sandwich crumbles and a great homemade vanilla icing. For a Lauderhill establishment in an area where you really don't know of anything else happening, this place is worth a venture out for your brunch. I'd go back to try the other items and drinks!

This wrap came with a choice of shell which I chose spinach, and inside it there was grilled chicken and bacon. I also got fries for my side. It also comes with a pickle slice which was a great touch! Service was fast and efficient and the wrap was delicious as the bacon was nice and crunchy and complemented the wrap very well. He said my order had been cancelled. I then called the store where a worker said they were out of meat (it was nearly 9pm, they're supposed to be open until 10)to which I replied, "why didn't anyone call me?". He just sighed into the phone so I asked to speak to a manager. I actually got Wally on the phone and he said my order had been cancelled so I asked by whom, he said he didn't know, it was just cancelled. I said "I didn't cancel it so who did?"and again he said he didn't know. I said the person I just spoke to said the store ran out of product so did you guys run out of food or did someone cancel my order? Again he said, "I don't know...." Yeah, Wally might know BBQ but apparently not much else, like food management or customer service. Where I'm from, if it looks like the restaurant is going to be short on something, they call the customer right away and ask if they would prefer a substitution or figure a way to make it right. If I was notified when the first delivery driver showed up that my meal wasn't going to be possible, at least I could have found an alternative for food, but because they waited until I called and subsequently, most other restaurants that offered delivery were closed by this time, they get a 1 star rating and this review. I will never consider eating at Wally's, ever. Probably too bad for me because it looks delicious, but I'd rather give my money to someone who actually cares. Oh yeah, collards aren't offered as a regular side on their online menu so good luck getting them through yelp if my expeience is any indication of their operational standards. Thanks for nothin' Wally.
