Exceptional food for several different country's cuisines. Bibimbap Korean dish was certainly as good or better than some of my favorite authentic Korean restaurants. Spicy Korean pork had exceptional flavor too. General Tso's chicken, my favorite of the dishes my group got, had a perfect level of frying with a sweet and savory sauce. This is by far my favorite Asian restaurant in Lawrence. Not only do they offer traditional Chinese as we know it in America, but you can also ask for an authentic menu to experience real Asian dishes. They have Japanese and Korean cuisine, and serve a long list of sushi rolls. I have never had bad food, they make it exactly to your liking. The service is amazing! The staff is kind, and your drink will never go empty. It's a family friendly environment with reasonable prices. In my honest opinion, they also serve the best Crab Rangoon in Lawrence. Good rolls, but bad Korean food. When I first saw the menu, I was really excited to see some Korean dishes. Bad mistake. The fact that their menu seemed to have a little bit of every east asian country should have been a warning. Jack of all trades, master of none, right? (Maybe they're masters of rolls and Chinese food... but definitely not Korean!) or at least the fact that they didn't have black bean noodles while they had champong should have made me suspicious. At any rate, I ordered champong (spicy seafood noodles with broth) and my husband ordered bibimbop (mixed rice). When the food came out, mine looked and tasted more like Japanese Ramen than champong. It wasn't bad, a bit saltier than I would have liked, and I may not have minded it so much if I was expecting Japanese Ramen. But I was anticipating for something very specific and this was nowhere close. It was a huge disappointment. My husband's bibimbop was also not Korean. It looked like bibimbop, but the meat was too sweet and the red sauce was not the red pepper paste that is used by Koreans. My husband thinks that the food was altered to please average American tastebuds. I think they just mimicked Korean food with the ingredients they had for their other cuisine rather than actually getting Korean ingredients. Maybe my husband is right about their meat seasoning because you can make authentic bulgogi with generic soy sauce and other common ingredients such as sugar and black pepper. Either they don't have the right recipe or they changed it intentionally. So for an innocent American who has never had real Korean food, their dishes may still be enjoyable. If I had tried their nonKorean dishes I may have liked them since I don't know what they're supposed to taste like. We did order a roll and we liked it very much since we did not have specific expectaions. read more

Not impressed. The menu is large & they have lots of choices, the delivery was timely as well...the only reason for the one star. They told me 40-45 minutes and it arrived within 20. For 2 people to eat it was $26. I thought this amount was absolutely absurd for take- out oriental food. The sushi roll I ordered fell apart and was mushy...the sticky rice they used was obviously not the right temperature. For the Chinese menu (which is translated in English), this is the best authentic (from my understanding) Chinese food in town. If I have the rating of how greasy of the food from 1-10, I will give 3 for this place (I will give 8 or 9 for other Chinese restaurants with Chinese menu). I recommend the hot pot. Both spicy and non-spicy hot pot are very good. The tofu in a hot plate is good, as well as the shrimp with eggplants. For the regular menu, I think pad kee mow (Thai food) is very good. The dish is not oily and has the smell of good stir-frying. I have tried sushi once and I never try it again. Well, I have no idea why did I try sushi in Chinese restaurant. read more

I would say the best dishes you will get here are from Chinese menu. The two dishes that everyone sure to love are fish in chili oil ( this one is spicy though, but if u up for it u will love it) and eggplant stuffed with shrimp. They also have beef/lamb/seafood hot pots that u can order but not in the menu..surely very delicious. I love spicy soup but u can just choose ones that not spicy. Growing up in Lawrence, I've seen so many restaurants come and go from this location. I really, really hope Oriental Bistro breaks the curse and is able to stay forever. I'd heard great things about this place and I'm now able to confirm that everything I was told is completely accurate. Great food, great service, and great prices (at least for lunch, I didn't check out the dinner menu prices). Everyone should try the bulgogi! We gave this restaurant a try because of the variety and all the positive reviews and glad we did. Very well decorated and comfortable setting, bordering classy, but still casual. Ordered gyoza and crab rangoon which came with a trio of sauces. Both were fresh, crispy and delicious. My spouse loved her Thai basil with shrimp and my beef bulgogi didn't disappoint. I spent the afternoon at Oriental Bistro with friends, and we had a great time. The staff is wonderful, and they always exceed my expectations. We started off with $1 (everyday) warm sake, and had lettuce wraps as appetizers. The lettuce wraps were delicious and stuffed with filling, well beyond the amount most restaurants provide. I had the Galbi and the Yummy Roll, both of which I highly recommend. I sampled the Sunrise Roll, which was edible art and tasted as good as it looked. We did have a bit of problem with getting our food, although this was the first mistake I've encountered at the Oriental Bistro after several visits. One of my friend's sushi rolls was forgotten by the kitchen; however, the staff was so professional in taking care of the problem that we left happier than we would have had she gotten the roll straight away. They apologized, didn't charge us for the roll, and brought out the roll in a to go box with the check. While it was somewhat inconvenient to have the roll forgotten, I think the manner in which the Oriental Bistro addressed the problem shows so much about them as a restaurant. It is so nice to know that when there is a problem, you will be well taken care of. That is the kind of thing that makes me want to go back again--Oriental Bistro turning a negative into a positive. Additionally, the menu is quite extensive. They offer a large variety of Asian cuisine, not just the standard Chinese. I used to love this place, but lately I've noticed less than authentic ingredients seeping there way into the cuisine. The rice is ok but it's not the best the noodles are not cooked perfectly, to spicy and the pot stickers are slightly burnt and not filled all the way. We originally planned to try the Saigon cafe across the street. When we discovered it was closed we decided to come here as I was craving pho and saw it was on the menu. We walked in and were promptly greeted and sat. Our server WAYNE came over greeted us and gave us some time to look over the menu. My husband and I pondered our options, deciding on the house ginger salad for myself and miso soup for him and crab rangoon. We were really thirsty after our friendsgiving the night before, poor Wayne refilled our waters about 100 times..never allowing our glasses to become empty. We receive our starters....and WOW!!! I could eat that house salad everyday. It was fresh and so tasty I wanted to drink the juices at the bottom..lol. We ask Wayne what his favorites our from Korean and Thai selections. He suggests the Bulgogi and Pineapple Basil. We end up ordering the Bulgogi(me) and Thai Basil (husband), along with a philly roll and a spicy crab roll from sushi menu. (hey we were hungry) Our food comes out in reasonable time and looks amazing. We start with our sushi rolls, and move on to main dishes. My Bulgogi was awesome. Portion was great and came with steamed rice. My husbands Thai Basil was perfectly hot and spicy, just how he likes. Now...we are hooked. While the food was awesome the best part of our evening was Wayne. He was so attentive, very...very polite and kept that water flowing. I can only hope when we return we get the pleasure to be served by him again. Also, as we sat, we couldn't help but hear the table behind us talking to the owner. They were obviously regulars, eating and discussing with the owner a catering order they wanted to place. Once again the woman owner herself was amazingly kind, also discussing with the couple her husband and his well being. I ask Wayne for a box to go for my Bulgogi and he kindly asked if he could box it up for me. We receive our check and I was quite surprised at the cost. I was expecting a higher price for all we ordered and was pleasantly surprised I for sure know we will be back and can't wait to try another fabulous dish. We love Oriental Bistro. They have great Chinese and American menus and you can't beat $1 warm sake every day of the week, especially in the winter. We especially love the sautéed green beans and eggs with chives. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed and the service is great. I am writing this review as I eat my Oriental Bistro order. I've eaten here before, getting their Thai drunken noodles that are really good; however, I leave extremely dissatisfied this evening. I ordered the chicken pad thai, and my girlfriend ordered the Tofu Lo Mein. First off, when we picked up our food it was nice and hot and looked delicious. I have had pad thai from multiple places and I have NEVER been as confused regarding what pad thai is suppose to taste like than I am now. It doesn't matter where I've gone, the pad thai usually tastes like pad thai, with the exception of dryness here and there. The pad thai I received at Oriental Bistro was horrendous, to say the least. There is nothing tharemotely even close to pad thai. Yes, there's all the pad thai ingredients but the taste is just awful. My dish wasn't even spicy, despite me ordering that way and I honestly can't even get through half of my dish because it tastes so bad. I can't even describe what taste I'm tasting besides just terrible. I could continue, but I will go to the Lo mein. My girlfriends veggie Lo mein was noodles with very minimal veggies and her tofu was mushy. Two bad combinations in a veggie dish. She couldn't even get through half of her dish either. This is something where I can't even ask for my money back on the basis of the food not even coming close to what those dishes are suppose to taste like. I understand you are Asian fusion but these two dishes are pathetic. I would hope the chef is knowledgable enough about Asian food that they know what the main taste of a specific Asian dish is suppose to taste like. They also use the same noodles they use in the Chinese lo mein as they do in the Japanese yakisoba. I understand every restaurant makes their dishes differently, but this is embarrassing. I will never get this dish again, and I am probably going to re-consider ever going here again. Awful, really just awful. My husband and I were in the mood for Asian cuisine so we decided to give this restaurant a try. We were not disappointed. The environment of the restaurant is really nice. The entire staff that we dealt with was friendly. The food was very good. I ordered a sushi roll for starters, it was really good. It was served on a little wooden sushi board which was cool. I ordered the pan fried dumplings and they were very good as well. My husband opted to try a Korean dish that was new to him. He has been raving about it ever since. I usually order the Beef Bulgogi and that is always fabulous. Today I took a chance and ordered the Beef Singapore Noodles. It was awful! The noodles were over cooked mush, the curry was unequally mixed in so there were chunks with too much curry, and I threw it away after only three bites. I would give 4.5 if I could. It isn't quite 5 only because the quality is inconsistent- always delicious, but to varying degrees. I've mostly eaten from the authentic Chinese menu, but have also had the excellent futomaki roll. Saki is $1 all the time! My favorite dishes are the a choy, sizzling tofu and spicy green beans.
