    Dragon and Phoenix

Came on a Sunday evening. Hubby and I both chose the Dragon and Phoenix entree. We sampled the brown sauce but has strong soy sauce flavor. Our entrees were served on a platter, no cover for the food. Was given a smaller plate to eat from. We had to ask for more white sauce as it was lacking in our entree. They serve Coke products and Jasmine tea! Staff is extremely cordial and helpful.

Best Chinese takeout I've found in the Glen Carbon/Edwardsville area. Also a sit down restaurant. Our usual is either Chicken Egg Foo Young or General Tso's Chicken but everything we've tried is good. The restaurant is pretty typical decor. The takeout service is great. I can't speak to the dine-in service.

Good little spot. It started to get busy as I was leaving. General Taos was good a little plain tasting was expecting more flavor but overall I was happy with the place. Lunch special came with soup option and egg roll or Rangoon

"Come closer, lover, take a table." Such was the greeting to each party on Friday afternoon from the animated waiter wearing the $100-bill-themed bow tie. The floor show continued with a strange shuffle between kitchen and dining room, and a little sexual innuendo thrown into conversation about our order. Most diners chuckled, and went along with the act, but there were some strange looks, too. The family dinner for two (split by two teenagers) came with choice of soup, appetizer, and two entrees large enough to take most home. My wife's vegetable plate, and my seafood delight were good-sized, and the veggies were cooked just right, not too soft or wimpy.

Great food for a great value. I have been here many times and it always good. We enjoy the dinner for two. You get your choice of soup, appetizer, two main dishes. More food than any two people can eat. Severed as a family style setting. It is a small business with limited seating. But I have never waited more than 10 mins. The owners are always pleasant and welcoming. I highly recommend this spot!

We brought the family here to celebrate my wife's birthday, and it certainly didn't disappoint! The Orient has a large fish tank that my kids enjoyed as we walked in. We were served promptly and our server was very friendly. The appetizers tasted great- crab Rangoon's, egg roll, and hot/sour soup was really good. I thought the main dishes (sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken) tasted a little on the bland side and could have benefited from more seasonings, but other than that, everything was great!

Our favorite place to get Chinese take out in Edwardsville. We always get the family dinner for two, and enjoy lots of leftovers.

Fried rice was yellow rice with some onions, very sad rice with no flavor at all. Hardly traditional fried rice. Was given a 25 minute estimate. Got there at 20 minutes and waited almost 30 more for my order. The huge tub of brown gravy they give you is ridiculously large for the amount needed for the entree and scalding hot temperature. The container it comes in has a lid that is impossible to remove without spilling the full sauce all over. There are no sauce packets out for you to grab like most Chinese take out places have and when the bag was handed to me all sealed up I assumed (wrongly) that they had thrown some sauces in. My bad for assuming. They did throw fortune cookies in. Ugly: The General Tso chicken was inedible. The unrecognizable chunks of "chicken" were so stringy and tough and full of cartridge more than half of them could not be eaten and had to be spit out. The sauce also had no heat (menu shows a spicy symbol) and really no flavor like traditional General Chicken you would expect. Our total order exceeded the amount ($21 before tax) listed on the menu for 3 free crab rangoon which I asked for when I ordered. When I got there they charged me for the rangoon but I didn't notice that until I got home. This is our 3rd disappointing visit in a row. I realize it's the only Chinese in town and everyone in Bethalto loves it but it's really sad that it doesn't live up to the hype.

The first was while in a hotel when we first arrived in June to move into our "forever home" in Staunton (about 10 miles away). We went again a month or so after moving in. We went today (Sunday lunch) because we wanted to pick up a few things at Walmart. Understand where I (we) are coming from. My wife spent her childhood in Hawaii, and her father is Japanese. I am an Army veteran, and have been to plenty of Asian restaurants around the world. I do have a tough standard. I am sincerely not trying to punch down. I want this place to be good, it would be better for my retirement years for it to be good. It is the closest option for buffet. Our Staunton option is a menu only, and it is also not a good option, at all. I understand that a place needs to cater to its patrons to be profitable. I am not saying they don't try, I'm not saying they don't care. I do understand that americanized and (bland) is what they need to lean into. Our lunch today was $40 and we both left unsatisfied. I am willing to eat anything and have the girth to prove it. My wife is a bit more particular, but certainly has the ability to provide a decent value judgement on the things she chooses. There just are not consistently good choices to be had here. The "sushi" for example is marginal at best. There are more breaded/fried items than truly exist in Asian menus at other places I have been. The other items almost always have a sauce that is salt and sugar forward. There are very few spices/textures that I would expect from a Chinese menu. It is relatively clean, the people working here do try to do a good job. I appreciate the effort required to put all this together for us. It has the standard Chinese restaurant decorations (I think there is a kit that can be ordered from somewhere), but they haven't overdone it. I do understand and accept that people like this place, and appreciate the offerings. I am in no way looking down on their preference, [To each their Own] and please continue to enjoy it. If you are however, just passing through, it may not be the best stop for good Chinese food, okay "food" sure, but not on par with other options I have enjoyed.
