Well...that's interesting. I walk into Hong Kong and there are 16 people waiting for food inside. Not eating...waiting. I probably should have bailed but I decided to give them a go. The kitchen interestingly enough seemed a lot like Hong Kong, crowded, busy, and noisy like a late night market street vendor. Cantonese being yelled ( I speak Mandarin a bit and I'm not catching it so it must be Cantonese )The whole family was involved. Old Laohu ( literally "old tiger" or grandpa ) casually drinking a soda officially ignoring the chaos. Half a dozen cooks going out of their minds busy. The young English speaking daughter at the register, curt, perturbed and irritated. They just served #114 I'm number 140 The woman in the drive through complaining that she ordered over an hour ago. They cut off their orders after me I just overheard. Meanwhile the younger family members look like their going to die. Finally the orders start rolling out and they pick up steam. Actually the more I sit here watching them work through the backlog the more I admire them. They're busting their asses. I'm not doing anything tonight so I'm just going to consider this the pre dinner show. I started this review at a two. For sheer determination and grit I'm up to Four stars. I have to give it to them. They are so popular and they are not the only Chinese place in town. One of five I believe. As I sit with the waiters they assure me it's worth the wait. I ordered pork fried rice and Kung Bao chicken. Ooooo drama! I've been waiting for an hour and a good old boy comes up to order. The young daughter tells him they aren't taking orders. Mom intercedes in Cantonese to tell daughter to take the order. A LOUD Cantonese verbal dispute erupts! "What did I do?!" The good ole boy says confused. The youngster concedes and takes his order. This disturbs Laohu who shuffles of to the office. Well at long last I got my food a little over an hour later. The Kung Bao chicken was great but the fried rice was surprisingly bland. With the food adjusted in I'm going to lower my rating back down to a three. My suggestion is to call ahead. If they don't answer, try someplace else.

Every entree or appetizer I order, pleases my taste buds. There Crab Rangoon is the bomb. You get 8 big pieces, so if you're a single person, it easily can be a meal. I've added an Egg Roll to the order and presto, I've got a meal. Their Egg Rolls are crisp and crunchy. My favorite main dishes are; General Tso, Beef & Broccoli, Orange Chicken, Hot Pepper Chicken and Beef Fried Rice. Today, I'll add the St Paul Sandwich. When I first moved to the Eastside of the river, none of the Chinese restaurants offered a St. Paul. Just recently, China King added them to the menu and they're doing a fine job preparing them. Since moving over here and dining at China King, the staff has revolved and improved. Most speak broken English, but they can still take and get your order prepared correctly. They may not be personable and super friendly, but your food will be delicious.

My husbands chicken was decent! The price did seem a bit high compared to menu prices, but not so outrageous I questioned it too much, but worth noting here. I'd have given this 4 star if cheaper, but the value and taste overall, solid decent 3 star chinese food.

Fried rice was yellow rice with some onions, very sad rice with no flavor at all. Hardly traditional fried rice. Was given a 25 minute estimate. Got there at 20 minutes and waited almost 30 more for my order. The huge tub of brown gravy they give you is ridiculously large for the amount needed for the entree and scalding hot temperature. The container it comes in has a lid that is impossible to remove without spilling the full sauce all over. There are no sauce packets out for you to grab like most Chinese take out places have and when the bag was handed to me all sealed up I assumed (wrongly) that they had thrown some sauces in. My bad for assuming. They did throw fortune cookies in. Ugly: The General Tso chicken was inedible. The unrecognizable chunks of "chicken" were so stringy and tough and full of cartridge more than half of them could not be eaten and had to be spit out. The sauce also had no heat (menu shows a spicy symbol) and really no flavor like traditional General Chicken you would expect. Our total order exceeded the amount ($21 before tax) listed on the menu for 3 free crab rangoon which I asked for when I ordered. When I got there they charged me for the rangoon but I didn't notice that until I got home. This is our 3rd disappointing visit in a row. I realize it's the only Chinese in town and everyone in Bethalto loves it but it's really sad that it doesn't live up to the hype.

I think sometime in the near future, I'll try dining in. I frequently change my entree, but I always get one egg roll and an order of crab rangoon. The egg roll is larger than most Chinese restaurants. I like that it's super crispy and the inside is packed full. The crab rangoon comes with four pieces and they'll ask you if you want a side of sweet & sour sauce. If you say yes, you'll get a small cup of the red sauce like when you order Sweet & Sour Pork or Chicken. They don't give you those small packets like other restaurants. My usual go to entrees are always Beef and Broccoli or General Tso's Chicken. Both of them are very good. I do the B&B when I'm trying to eat healthy Chinese. The beef is tender and the broccoli is soft, but still has a little snap to it. When enjoying the Beef and Broccoli, I have white rice. The General Tso's Chicken has a lite crispy coating and the sauce blends perfectly with fried rice, instead of white rice. Service is over the top friendly. Kelly the owner has personality plus, is super witty and always makes sure you are a satisfied customer.

The food was plentiful and of a higher quality than I have been able to find for a long time! The food was hot, fresh, a great amount for the price and course the proprietor, Kelly, is awesome. I see much more Chinese food in our future.

I'm hard of hearing so I needed my wife to help hear the woman behind the counter. She was great! Very helpful and even threw an extra bag of crab Rangoon. It kind of makes it a hidden treasure and I'm glad that I found it. My visit was during a Saturday lunch and I was impressed. I started my meal with Fried Spring Rolls filled with vegetables and served Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. They were a thin crisp shell, that still gave a nice crunch when bitten into. The sauce was a accompaniment. For an entree I chose, Drunken Noodles and added Beef for my protein. I was torn between Pad Thai and the Drunken Noodle and when I asked my server, she said their most popular dish was Drunken Noodles. Then when I went to add my protein it was between chicken and beef. She said beef was her favorite add, so I went with her recommendation. Once my entree arrived to the table I was surprised by its size. It was huge. It was so big, it could have been a meal for two. Guess who had leftovers for lunch the next day. The noodles were flavorful and lots of tender beef and had plenty of veggies. My spice level was 3 out of 5 and I still was sweating along my hairline. Next visit I may have to scale back to a two. The service was attentive and the young lady who was my server, had a bubbly personality. I also had a young man who brought me my order, checked on me and I wasn't even his table. Now that I have found this hidden treasure, I will definitely be back. When: March 7, 2026 Why: Lunch
