I am not from the area, my son was training for his football program nearby so I decided to have lunch, sushi. I know go figure, sushi in Granite City, IL. I was swayed by all the good reviews. So if you not watching for the place you will literally drive right by it. It looks like a very small storefront house in the middle of a strange triangle intersection. But i pushed on. I was there right when it opened. I will say the inside was clean and the staff were very professional and accommodating. One benefit was that they served all my food on real dishes even the miso soup. I ordered various rolls which all came out quickly. I cant really say that this was my favorite sushi ever or that I must come back to the place. It was just okay. Instead of cucumbers they substituted apples in almost all the rolls. It was different. I just couldn't really taste the fish. it was more about the rice and other ingredients, I left there still wanting fish. Now i did have this butterfly pea lily tea. PHENOMENAL. My first visit to Osaka. A very quaint family run sushi restaurant in a pleasant and quiet neighborhood. We parked in the back like we were at a relatives home. The restaurant is very neat and clean. The chef works in the front and the dining room is in the back. Seating for 30. The waitress was very pleasant and answered all of my questions professionally and gave excellent service. I had a crazy roll and a squid salad and a water. The squid salad was excellent. Great flavor. A little different than what I have had in the past. I'll get it again next time! The crazy roll was 5 large pieces of art! Very well presented. The menu said it has apple inside. I have never tried that. Surprisingly to me it's is very good. I would recommend this roll! This was the worst restaurant meal of my life. We boxed up our food and threw it directly into a trash can. We can a combination of spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls, which looked worse than what you'd expect at a gas station and tasted worse. The roll was 95% off-white-mushy rice, a tiny piece of fish you thought for sure was going to give you food poisoning, and a giant chunk of apple. That's it. Both rolls were bathed in some kind of sauce apparently designed to mask the smell and look of the roll. On top of that, the service was abysmal. Everyone who ordered rolls had the same "what-on-earth-is-this-on-my-plate" look about them. PLEASE DON'T EVER GO HERE! read more

My wife and I stopped at this great little Sushi Cafe called Osaka. We were doing some shopping in Granite City IL and had passed by this little place a few times. We finally stopped by today and oh boy are we glad we did. I just got us some basic dishes since my wife has never really had sushi other than what is offered at a buffet. So she was not expecting much... but it is now her new favorite place. I got us a basic California roll and Miso soup and the Tempura shrimp and Veggies. IT WAS ALL DELICIOUS and very well prepared. We saw all of the great items on the menu and cannot wait to come back and try them. I was a little sad they will not have alcohol until this coming February. I like Saki and Sapporo beer. I am guessing since they moved to this new location they had to start over. Makes no difference the food is out-of-this-world good. Osaka Cafe is kind of one of those little hidden gems you want to tell everyone about and nobody at the same time because you want this treasure for yourself. This place kind of grows on you. I thought at first that they were fairly bad at customer service. However, as I have eaten at more Sushi restaurants, the Sushi here is not that bad...actually, it's pretty tasty. The lady that greets you one of the owners I am sure has cozied up to me a bit. Perhaps it just takes Asian personalities more time to feel more comfortable around a person, especially a dark skinned fella as myself. I have up their rating a bit as compared to one other well known Sushi place, this one is better than the well known Sushi restaurant to me. The customer service has improved towards the dark skinned persuasion as myself and she actually laughed with me today. I ordered​ the real Sushi this time, and the flavors were good, still pricey to me, but maybe Sushi prices have went up. I say give them a try, don't make that first visit your last visit, it may take two or three visits, then the owners will start to love you no matter who you are. I guess they appreciate loyalty more before they trust you with kindness. This is a mom and pop Sushi restaurant and it shows with the food being good and them taking time to warm up to you. My daughter and wife had Udon noodle, son took Tempura and I tried Regular Sushi. Honestly this is not a regular, fresh hand cut and made high quality Sushi. This is a great family owned business in Granite City. They are down to earth, honest people and they serve great food. The owners are nice and treat everyone the same. I have tried plenty of rolls over the years and keep coming back for the miso soup and the California Roll. They have a great special if you want to try a bunch of the rolls together. I believe they still do Karaoke on one the nights a week. Sometimes they have their dog there too( just in case your allergic.) If you don't have time to wait, then I would suggest to call ahead and get the order to go. Not in the mood for Sushi, they have other (HOT) entrees you can order as well. read more

We were excited to find a family run local sushi business not that far from our doorstep. The owners were welcoming and the establishment was pristine. There were a fair number of interesting rolls and such to choose from too. As crab meat lovers, it was great to see that they noted that they were using crab stick vs real crab. We are happy to say the fish we consumed tasted really fresh. That all said, we were thinking this might be a fair place for someone to go if they had never been introduced to sushi, and unfortunately that is where our sushi enjoyment ended. The overall meal portions when compared to the price were OK at best. The miso was an underwhelming broth without any hint of tofu or wakame. The owner's suggestions felt more like we were being squeezed to spend more. They weren't actually offering us their house's best options, either in the dollar amount or what they may be know for making. The lunch specials were whittled down to the tiniest possible piece of fish and mini-mini-rolls. There was no little side salad, soup, or whatever to accompany those lunch specials either. Those were extra. The sushi rice in the rolls was sticky instead of fluffy, and without a hint of vinegar. The pickled ginger had a mildly moldy flavor that was hard to shake. It was lunch time. They didn't appear to be particularly busy, but we finished our meals without being checked on once. If Osaka was next door, we might consider giving it one more go, but honestly we rather drive 20-30 minutes and eat elsewhere. read more
