Crazy Roll
Keith C.

My first visit to Osaka. A very quaint family run sushi restaurant in a pleasant and quiet neighborhood. We parked in the back like we were at a relatives home. The restaurant is very neat and clean. The chef works in the front and the dining room is in the back. Seating for 30. The waitress was very pleasant and answered all of my questions professionally and gave excellent service. I had a crazy roll and a squid salad and a water. The squid salad was excellent. Great flavor. A little different than what I have had in the past. I'll get it again next time! The crazy roll was 5 large pieces of art! Very well presented. The menu said it has apple inside. I have never tried that. Surprisingly to me it's is very good. I would recommend this roll! Very well done, fresh with a new flavor. Osaka is now on my recommended list! If you are in the area stop and try it out. You will be glad you did.

Osaka never disappoints!

I've been dining at Osaka for years and have never had a bad experience. I've enjoyed all of the rolls I've ever tried but tend to stick to my favs - futo maki, spicy California, & butterfly. Quick, friendly service in a clean, bright restaurant. Granite City is so lucky to have a restaurant that makes fresh sushi.

Spicy California roll on left, Fito maki in middle, and fried Philly on right. We ate more than half before we thought to take a photo!

Osaka has the best sushi that you can find...I would put it up against the very best sushi restaurants in any major city. We've tried other places like Kyoto in Edwardsville...and nothing compares to the quality and flavor of Osaka. It is owner-run and operated, so everything down to the bag it's packed in is perfect. Of course sushi is expensive, but Osaka is worth the money!

Butterfly roll and spicy California roll

The best Chirashi bowl hands down. Made with lettuce rice green pepper onion apple carrot and 3 types of fish. All other bowls aren't like this one. Highly, highly recommend. And the owners are salt of earth folks. The new restaurant is a great spot to dine in at.

I am extremely happy we came HERE for my friends first sushi experience, we had some fried and cooked for our first round. Then we tried some raw rolls & Fried Philly. Highly recommend, was very clean & kept that way. The staff was very attentive & helpful. Didn't take any pictures of the first round, sorry, just dug in. Got a pic of the second round after we already started. I was very impressed with everything. A little out of my way, but I will be back.

Best sushi restaurant. I have been to many sushi restaurants but this is the best. I will never not enjoy my time when I come. They moved to a bigger place yet it's almost entirely the same.

My wife and I stopped at this great little Sushi Cafe called Osaka. We were doing some shopping in Granite City IL and had passed by this little place a few times. We finally stopped by today and oh boy are we glad we did. I just got us some basic dishes since my wife has never really had sushi other than what is offered at a buffet. So she was not expecting much... but it is now her new favorite place. I got us a basic California roll and Miso soup and the Tempura shrimp and Veggies. IT WAS ALL DELICIOUS and very well prepared. We saw all of the great items on the menu and cannot wait to come back and try them. I was a little sad they will not have alcohol until this coming February. I like Saki and Sapporo beer. I am guessing since they moved to this new location they had to start over. Makes no difference the food is out-of-this-world good. Osaka Cafe is kind of one of those little hidden gems you want to tell everyone about and nobody at the same time because you want this treasure for yourself. But I want to make sure and say that if you are looking for real authentic sushi Japanese cuisine and you are near Granite City... Osaka Sushi Cafe is the place to go.

The food is pretty decent overall, with a few highlights and a couple of things that could use some tweaking. First off, the boba is okay, though one thing to note is that the tapioca pearls tend to get a little slimy if not stirred frequently, so keep that in mind. The seafood ramen was a cool dish, but the noodles could have been cooked a bit more to elevate the texture. The sushi was definitely a standout--filling and tasty. The cucumber roll was spot-on, but the salmon roll didn't quite match what I expected. It wasn't bad, just different in a way that threw me off a little. The vibe, though, is where this place really shines. If you're into anime, you'll definitely feel at home with the themed decor and atmosphere. It gives off a fun and lively energy, even if the restaurant still carries some of its IHOP roots in its outdated interior. Honestly, the old IHOP design is a bit noticeable, but it somehow adds to the charm and doesn't detract from the overall experience. What really stood out, though, was the customer service. The staff was wonderful--friendly, welcoming, and personal, making the entire dining experience feel much more special. They were attentive and made sure you felt taken care of throughout your visit. Overall, I'd give it a solid 4.5/5. Not perfect, but definitely a great spot, especially for the Alton area. It has a lot of potential and is a fun place to check out, especially if you're a fan of anime or looking for a unique dining experience. EDIT: Just finished the Bento Box Chicken Teriyaki, and honestly, it was the best bento box I've ever had! The chicken was cooked perfectly, with just the right balance of flavors and a generous amount of teriyaki glaze. The rice was on point, cooked to perfection--fluffy and full of flavor. And the sushi? Super delicious! It paired so well with everything, making the whole meal a delightful experience. Highly recommend this bento box if you're looking for a satisfying and flavorful meal! Updated rating: 4.7/5

While i was debating a 2nd bite, i found a long hair. I stopped at 1 bite but really, for the best. The miso soup only tasted of salt and maybe Campbell's? Very mass produced, salty. I did take 2 "bites" of that. The hibachi looked good cooking but the fried rice was so oily. The vegetables very bland - maybe my tastebuds were dulled by the miso. The scallops were decent. The shrimp were fine. The filet was ok but I'm not really sure it was filet and not sirloin. I passed on the yum sauce- i don't find it yummy anywhere. I got ginger sauce which was decent. The Teriyaki was briwn syrup - so sugary sweet with little other taste. I took leftovers, mostly rice and steak, but just shared the steak with my dog and ditched the leftover greasy rice. Overall, just disappointing. My dining companions were nonplussed as well.

We wanted sushi so we were by the sushi bar. Japanese cuisine is supposed to be about presentation and flavor. This was neither. I order the sashimi appetizer, shrimp & vegetable tempura, and fancy rainbow roll. My tempura came out in a plastic red basket. The dipping sauce was a funny red sweet and sour sauce. The tempura was warm, but it lack the light fluffiness. My sashimi was somewhat arranged in a plastic tray. The only thing that barely passed was rainbow roll. Note: I did try asking for something else for my tempura. The waitress brought me mustard base sauce.. maybe from the hibachi side. What ever happen to classic tentsuyu sauce made with dashi, mirin, soy sauce, and grated daikon. Its tempura... not chicken nuggets. Hubby had the salmon lover and 2 white fish nigiri. The bill came out to be $85... and was an experience i rather forget. Upside, neither of us got food poisoning. Needless to say, I won't be back. Thr food was not worth the calories or thr money. Maybe better luck at Wasabi?
