They are so so back! They served me the best Hunan shrimp I have had probably in my life tonight I am so thrilled! They even made it as extra spicy as I like which they are usually afraid to do but not anymore! It's so good to have the best Chinese restaurant in the Midwest back up to form again. I take it the locals haven't had the fortune of eating reasonable quality Chinese food. Some cons - Unclean table Terrible wonton soup Crab rangoons with not even synthetic crab but only cheese! Fortuitously the hunan chicken with fried rice was somewhat decent. Saying the food was mediocre would be the most overrated compliment of the year! On entering the establishment a small bar awaits. I sat and ordered a corona with a lemon. My arms were sticking to the wood surface. There was a 100 gallon fish tank full of fish in very swamp like dirt water. I noticed all the glasses on the back bar were covered in a dusty film. I placed my order for some Szechwan beef extra spicy and some fried rice to go. Immediately I was asked to pay like I was going to run out the door or something. There definitely was not enough staff as one gal seemed to be doing everything. Food came out pretty quickly before I had time to drink my beer. I ordered extra spicy HOT but flavor was bland at best. As I travel for a living I try restaurants for my daily food needs and this would not be a place I would return to. read more

China Restaurant has been a mainstay in my diet for over a decade. Every comfort food or study session, and every happy lunch with friends has been here. I have always been more than satisfied with the food and service. My only gripe has been that they do not offer Ski (a local soda) as they only offer Pepsi product. Since moving to Indiana, the tradition is to eat lunch here the Sunday before we leave when we come home to Highland for visits. After this visit we have decided we will no longer be doing this. We're not sure if there is a new cook, if the recipe has changed, or maybe some combination of the two. Regardless, the food was NOT delicious. It in fact was the opposite. The egg drop soup and crab ragoon were fine. The Walnut Shrimp tasted undercooked, the sauce was a cold and globby consistency, and the fried rice tasted stale. The chicken and vegetables my boyfriend received were not only NOT what he ordered (the waitress refused to fix the issue and insisted he had), but it too was cold and the sauce was tangy as if it had soured. I guess from now on when we visit home we'll make DiMaggio's buffet on Friday the new tradition. read more

Not sure how this place got such good reviews--maybe the dinners are much better than the lunch specials, but I was unfortunately disappointed. I stopped in for lunch while in town for business and ordered a $5.99 lunch special, the server recommend the Yu Shan chicken. It came with two crab Rangoon, white or fried rice, and soup. I ordered the hot & sour for my soup, and it was way too much on the sour side--too much vinegar. The few vegetables that it has were too translucent as well--a sign that I probably don't want to know when it was made. The chicken came in a ginger sauce that was actually pretty tasty, but was overshadowed by semi-fresh veggies. The white rice was fine, as were the Rangoon, but they could increase the temp of the frying oil a bit as they were on the oily side. A textbook example of far-eastern "fast-food" passed off on the gwai-lo (that's us Yankees) as Chinese cuisine. read more

Best Chinese in highland and about as healthy as you can get in this town. I recommend the hunan pork, Mongolian pork and kung pao chicken. I think the pork dishes are a bit better meat and less fatty. Priced right and be sure to grab a menu for takeout. Plus upgrade to fried rice and start with the wonton soup. A great restaurant, 5 star food in a small city. I gotta admit, if your in St. Louis there are better restaurants, but for this place being out in a small town, it's not that bad.. I ordered 2 days of food for $20, a few pints of rice, as for rice, I'd stick with their fried rice, it's very tasty.. I only wish I could eat there every day.. Maybe next time I eat there I'll stay there so I don't have to worry about rushing home with steaming hot food.. I'm certain this place won't need a visit from Kitchen Nightmares' Chef Ramsey anytime soon.. But I think it wouldn't hurt for them to run promo's in a town ad for some sort of discount, if enough meals were purchased in one ticket. As for the feel of the lobby, it does have an aquarium, at the time I was there it was kinda stinking up the front of the restaurant. By the time I visit again I hope it's been serviced. or at least made to have the aquarium vent the stink outside instead of in the people's face who want to eat there.. In fact, I don't remember seeing anything in there.. Anyways, For my first visit to a Mom & Pop place it wasn't too bad.. Food was enjoyable, staff wasn't horrible. I will be returning to this Chinese Restaurant many more times in the near future.. I will say one thing that might change (hopfully) by the next time I'm there, the eggrolls seemed to be straight from a frozen bag, I would expect better, possibly handmade eggrolls or at least Non-frozen in some way.. I can tell the difference, I had some eggrolls at a place in STL, and those were made fresh. and were so much easier to eat and didn't have a Microwave taste to them.. I will leave this as a 5 star place, as long as someone from the restaurant is willing to read this review, as for someone mentioning on here, they didn't change the recipe book? Honestly, Keep some of the foor if it's a hit, but other than that trim the menu down to save money, only have stuff that sells.. Don't have octopus on the menu if no one eats it.. This was the worse food I have ever got. Couldn't even eat. There oil was old and every thing tasted awful. Would never go there again. It shows that more is wrong if they don't charge there oil. We refused to eat it. My advice is find some where else. read more

The menus were dirty and gross; it's as if they have been stored directly over a vat of grease...they were actually gooey. The grease in which the crab Rangoon was fried must be very, very old because they had a horrible aftertaste. The shrimp in my fried rice were over cooked and had a rubber-like texture. Usually good. Very large selection of dishes priced reasonably. Good service. One Sunday (about a year ago) I had Orange Chicken and got very sick afterwards with vomiting and diarrhea. I recovered in a few days. No one else in our party got sick, even though one other had the same dish. It took awhile, but I finally agreed to eat again at the restaurant because of friends. I have eaten there 3-4 times since then with no problems. I have not heard of anyone else who ever got sick after eating there. They have very good hot & sour soup! read more
