A hidden simple gem. Fresh and authentic Chinese food. A great value and much healthier than most options within 30 miles. Reminds me of other places with simple, clean decor with great service and delicious food. Give it a try. It will become something more than it is today.

Great food but atmosphere stinks. No napkins, no trash cans, bottled soda, no fountain soda. The General Tso's Chicken was really good, white rice good and crab rangoon very good. The server/order taker acted like I was putting her out for coming in. Too bad.

Hot and ready minutes after I placed my order. Sanitation procedures were impressive. Food was great. Large portions! I ate too much!

The Hot & Sour soup is the best we've had this side of a restaurant we frequented in Fairbanks, Alaska.

We never did figure it out, but on the way back to I-64 we decided to have some Chinese at China King. Is China King a big chain? There is one with he same name in Kill Devil Hills, NC where we had just driven from. I suppose there are only so many words that they can find to put before or after China and a few are bound to be repeated. We both had chicken dishes. I will say the lunch portions are pretty large and modestly priced. I don't recall what exactly I had but Ms T had her usual Broccoli Chicken. I wanted plenty of vegetables, some chile heat and a sauce that was not sweet. So I told the lady that and that is what I got. I'm tired of accidentally getting the super sweet sauces and the battered, fried chicken and no vegetables. It is best to just ask. The food was OK and as I said, plentiful. But it was pretty bland and boring. Extra spicy was not spicy at all. The sauces were pretty light without much flavor. The vegetables were crisp and also generous. So, the food was not bad, just not remarkable. In a larger city, I would rate this two stars, but In New Baden with limited choices for Chinese, I guess I will round up to three.

I just moved to town this June. This place is walking distance from my home. I want it to be good,…read moreI need it to be good. I do not want to have to drive to another town to get, what my wife calls "strip mall Chinese". This initial review is for my lunch time visit on 2 JUL 2025. I got carry out Hunan Pork, and Hot & Sour soup, as a combo,so it came with fried rice and an egg roll. I notice that the most recent reviews (glowing) were from 2023. Things can change, they can change overnight with a change of cook/staff or ownership. Someone local with more insight will eventually be able to fill me in. It is a nice enough place, overall. A bit run down, and a little bit cliche in terms of the decorating. With some light maintenance and a bit of editing on the decor, it could be a charming little spot, in a small Midwestern town. I am trying to be kind, becuase I have been fortunate enough to have travelled the world, and have gone to many different levels of restuarants. I like "simple" americanized Chinese food sometimes, it is something I actually look for when I got o different towns. The good; hot & sour soup was very nice, just tangy enough from the vinegar and just spicy enough from pepper (didn't detect any hot sauce flavors) to be good. There were mushrooms, bamboo, and a bit of tofu. I missed the drizzled egg that I have had in others versions. The could have been better; the Hunan pork was very one note, salt, was tender and good portion in the dish, but that just salt flavoring made it a bit hard to enjoy. The sauce was okay, and the vegetables were well prepared and balanced. The egg roll was an egg roll, if not mass produced, it just wasn't made with real attention, it was a bit hollow. The bad: fried rice, the texture was just plain wrong from anything I have had over many years and came to believe was correctly made. There were no "chunks" of anything, just vaguely browned rice (soy sauce perhaps). I will come back, I will try other things. I will order from the high end of the menu and see if perhaps they simply , for complex reasons I'm sure, decided to mail it in on the weekday lunch combos (places do that). I want Bamboo Garden to be better. I want it to be a reliable place for me to get good "strip mall Chinese."

Good: Crab ragoon was good, hot and fresh. The steamed shrimp with vegetables was good. Shrimp…read morewere nice sized and cooked well. Bad: Egg roll was cold but tasted ok. Fried rice was yellow rice with some onions, very sad rice with no flavor at all. Hardly traditional fried rice. Was given a 25 minute estimate. Got there at 20 minutes and waited almost 30 more for my order. The huge tub of brown gravy they give you is ridiculously large for the amount needed for the entree and scalding hot temperature. The container it comes in has a lid that is impossible to remove without spilling the full sauce all over. There are no sauce packets out for you to grab like most Chinese take out places have and when the bag was handed to me all sealed up I assumed (wrongly) that they had thrown some sauces in. My bad for assuming. They did throw fortune cookies in. Ugly: The General Tso chicken was inedible. The unrecognizable chunks of "chicken" were so stringy and tough and full of cartridge more than half of them could not be eaten and had to be spit out. The sauce also had no heat (menu shows a spicy symbol) and really no flavor like traditional General Chicken you would expect. Our total order exceeded the amount ($21 before tax) listed on the menu for 3 free crab rangoon which I asked for when I ordered. When I got there they charged me for the rangoon but I didn't notice that until I got home. This is our 3rd disappointing visit in a row. I realize it's the only Chinese in town and everyone in Bethalto loves it but it's really sad that it doesn't live up to the hype.
