Our favorite place is no longer. Still in business, but a new owner changed all the recipes to his. Even after so many complaints by former regulars he refuses to use what people like. Ordered through door dash. "Large soda" delivered in a soup container. Ordered whole sesame chicken combo with Fried rice and an egg roll. The egg role fried perfectly but lacking any real flavor. Fried rice the same and somewhat dry. As this is an up charge skip it. Sesame chicken drenched and soggy but the overall flavor was sufficient. Came on a Sunday evening. Hubby and I both chose the Dragon and Phoenix entree. We sampled the brown sauce but has strong soy sauce flavor. Our entrees were served on a platter, no cover for the food. Was given a smaller plate to eat from. We had to ask for more white sauce as it was lacking in our entree. They serve Coke products and Jasmine tea! Staff is extremely cordial and helpful. read more

Ok, we have been going for 8 years since moving to the area. The last two times we have gone the food has changed; I think there are new owners. The old auntie and young man are still working there. That being said, if you are going to buy or take over a local favorite, take some time and learn how they did it, or change the name. I see that the name is Orient, not The Orient. Been going here for over 30 years. Was by far the best Chinese food in town. Then they started raising prices. Ok so I just went less. This last time will be the last time they get my business. They obviously have changes suppliers and got cheaper ingredients and it shows. This food was just bad. The crab Rangoon was just a runny mess and the rice was grainy and just not right. The sweet and sour chicken tasted and looked pre-made and was cold. The sauce was flat out cold and coagulated and gross. I even tried reheating in the microwave and it wasn't right. Such a shame they lost what made them great and now I'll just have to look for better options. As far as eating in which I seldom did. Best Chinese takeout I've found in the Glen Carbon/Edwardsville area. Also a sit down restaurant. Our usual is either Chicken Egg Foo Young or General Tso's Chicken but everything we've tried is good. The restaurant is pretty typical decor. The takeout service is great. Our go to place for Chinese food when in town. Food is always fresh and hot. Always order the fried rice "dark" its much better as I find their normal rice pretty bland. The hot braised chicken and Po Po Platter is the best! read more

Good service and clean environment, but the food was disappointing. Egg drop soup was greasy chicken broth served lukewarm. The two entrees were tasteless, which was surprising for Asian cuisine. We ordered the vegetable lo mein and vegetable chop suey. Both dishes were lacking in veggie content. My lo mein had 5 small broccoli pieces, two snow peas, one meager slice of mushroom and some tasteless shredded carrots. The noodles were unpalatable and made me sad. I adore a good veggie lo mein and was very much disappointed. Please, please, please use garlic and onions and some complex flavored sauces. We also ordered vegetable egg rolls. They were probably frozen egg rolls and were tough and bland, too. In short, good service and clean environment, but the food was bland and very disappointing. read more

Absolutely fantastic! I literally drive 25+ min just to get their crispy chicken. Why? It's one of the few dishes that, when reheated in the microwave the next day, keeps crisp. I cannot recommend this place enough. read more

"Come closer, lover, take a table." Such was the greeting to each party on Friday afternoon from the animated waiter wearing the $100-bill-themed bow tie. The floor show continued with a strange shuffle between kitchen and dining room, and a little sexual innuendo thrown into conversation about our order. Most diners chuckled, and went along with the act, but there were some strange looks, too. The family dinner for two (split by two teenagers) came with choice of soup, appetizer, and two entrees large enough to take most home. Great food for a great value. I have been here many times and it always good. We enjoy the dinner for two. You get your choice of soup,appetizer, two main dishes. More food than any two people can eat. Severed as a family style setting. It is a small business with limited seating. But I have never waited more than 10 mins. We brought the family here to celebrate my wife's birthday, and it certainly didn't disappoint! The Orient has a large fish tank that my kids enjoyed as we walked in. We were served promptly and our server was very friendly. The appetizers tasted great- crab Rangoon's, egg roll, and hot/sour soup was really good. This was absolutely delicious food. We walked in not really sure what to expect and sat down right near the fish. We first got the potstickers which were some of the best I've ever had. I had been buying meals from this establishment for a friend in a nursing home. Mostly a fine meal with no complaints. The last time I went there,about a month ago, I decided to order an egg roll for me and my brother while we waited for the to go meal. I asked for a small soda, and was told by the regular waitress,that I could not do that and that I would have to buy the large soda. The to go soda was fine as a small order but the one for inside had to be a large one. This was stated by the regular waitress with a fair amount of belligerence. When the egg rolls showed up they were both over cooked. Also the waitress slammed them.on our table.When the to go meal showed up,I paid for all the food and tipped the regular waitress 20%. Unfortunately the meal for my friend in the nursing home made him sick..Consequently I cannot recommend this establishment or the cuisine or the rude service by the regular waitress.Avoid like the plague. read more

The Orient has been my comfort food for many years. I generally get delivery since I'm not a big fan of dining out with the family, although I have often stopped there for lunch if I decide to nail out of work early. The food is always fantastic. The lunch specials bring you a lot of food for a low price. Depending on the size of your order, crab Rangoon or egg rolls are tossed in for free (only for sizable orders, don't expect it at the $10 level). The crispy chicken is my favorite, and I will always order it. My families favorite way to eat crispy chicken is straight from the fridge, so we always make that an additional order. In reference to other reviewers, I have never had an issue with delivery. It's always prompt, if it's running late it's within the 10-15 minute range. The owners and staff are some of the nicest people in the world, although the language barrier can be difficult with a few of the servers. All in all, I have eaten their food hundreds of times over the years. My order has been wrong a handful of times, but they've always made it right. Honestly, with the amount of times I have eaten from there, a handful of times is extremely low. Everyone makes the occasional mistake. read more

This was my first time at the Orient. The wanton soup was delicious and they served them with warm crunchy fried "chips". The egg roll was also fried crispy and was also delicious. It is hard to find good sesame chicken that is not spicy but I was delighted to find it here. However, the fried rice left something to be desired. I hardly ever write harsh reviews, but this place deserves it. Do not go here. The food is awful and the employees don't care if you spent $50 on trash! We ordered sesame chicken which was good, however did not make up for the rest of the meal that was truly inedible. The egg rolls had lots of gristle in them and not good flavor. The Mongolian beef was terrible, was mostly onion, and tasted burned or like it was cooked in a filthy wok. The veggie lo mein has zero flavor. Like none at all. The worst part was after taking one bite of both the lo mein and Mongolian beef we decided we were not willing to accept that we spent money on this food that we could not even eat. We returned with the food and asked if they could make us more sesame chicken or refund a portion of our meal, get a discount next time....anything would have been sufficient. They basically said they didn't care and acted like they didn't understand what we were saying despite speaking perfect English to the customer in front of us. Terrible experience. We've been going to this place for many years. The food is very good and reasonably priced. We typically get Orange Chicken, Cashew Chicken, Fried Rice, Crab Rangoon, Egg Rolls. The owners are one of the most hardworking families I've ever seen. They work extremely long hours and put a lot of effort into the restaurant. They don't always come across as overly warm and friendly, but they truly are. They also tend to score well in the county health board inspections. The only problem I have with the place is that some of the employees are not very fluent in speaking or understanding English. It is only an issue when calling in a delivery order which can sometimes be a very difficult interaction. Other than that, I love the place and hope they continue doing what they do. read more

Food may have been ok, but they put a bad taste in my mouth before hand. Ordered over phone for pick up, kid in front was polite. Got home to discover I had some beef cube order instead of General Tao Chicken. Call back to explain the situation and could hear the manager yelling (not in English) and arguing that she double checked the order and put GTC on the box, which was there, and just couldn't believe I could have possibly the wrong order. That took about 5 minutes to explain over and over, to the point I was ready to take all food back for my money back, but the family had already started to dig in. Horrible service, waitress is cleaning with dirty gloves takes them off bring our food and then gets right back to cleaning. Asked for more water takes off dirty gloves grab a water jug and served. Their kitchen situation is also not good although food is alright. Very stingy owners. read more
