Good: Crab ragoon was good, hot and fresh. The steamed shrimp with vegetables was good. Shrimp were nice sized and cooked well. Bad: Egg roll was cold but tasted ok. Fried rice was yellow rice with some onions, very sad rice with no flavor at all. Hardly traditional fried rice. Was given a 25 minute estimate. Got there at 20 minutes and waited almost 30 more for my order. The huge tub of brown gravy they give you is ridiculously large for the amount needed for the entree and scalding hot temperature. The container it comes in has a lid that is impossible to remove without spilling the full sauce all over. There are no sauce packets out for you to grab like most Chinese take out places have and when the bag was handed to me all sealed up I assumed (wrongly) that they had thrown some sauces in. My bad for assuming. They did throw fortune cookies in. Ugly: The General Tso chicken was inedible. The unrecognizable chunks of "chicken" were so stringy and tough and full of cartridge more than half of them could not be eaten and had to be spit out. The sauce also had no heat (menu shows a spicy symbol) and really no flavor like traditional General Chicken you would expect. Our total order exceeded the amount ($21 before tax) listed on the menu for 3 free crab rangoon which I asked for when I ordered. When I got there they charged me for the rangoon but I didn't notice that until I got home. This is our 3rd disappointing visit in a row. I realize it's the only Chinese in town and everyone in Bethalto loves it but it's really sad that it doesn't live up to the hype. read more

Food is great for such a tiny strip mall takeout place. The food order was the Orange chicken lunch special with an eggroll, combination fried rice upgrade, and a crab rangoon. The orange chicken was AMAZING. It was crispy/crunchy yet tender chicken inside. The combination fried rice had a generous amount of shrimp and pork. . . Eat this immediately and completely, it doesn't not reheat very well. The egg roll was typical shrimp egg roll, could have had more filling, but was crisp and flavorful. The crab rangoon was large and overfilled with cream cheese and crab, I will be ordering ALOT of these, since I live less than a mile away. NOTE: I say TAKEOUT Place because there are only 2 large tables with 2 chairs each, and four extra chairs along the side of the wall. The setup is very much like the ones I'd visit in the bad parts of Philadelphia and New York. Took our family here and was impressed with the quality of the food, the speed of service, and the friendly staff. For $25, you can get 3 solid meals here with egg roll, rice, and plenty to feed a family. My wife and kids were more than pleased with the orange chicken and chicken lo mein. I had the chicken chop suey. While I thought it could have had more flavor, it was served hot and fresh and was good once I loaded it up with hot sauce! Great authentic Chinese food. I love to see the whole family working as a team to make this a friendly family-owned business. Always a smile and a thank you at New China. Okay, so it's not gourmet, but it's as good as it gets for Bethalto, and you will not go away hungry. The speediness and portion sizes make up for any shortcomings. I like the Cashew Chicken & Szechuan Beef. My daughter enjoys the Lo Mein noodles and Wonton Soup. The crab rangoon is very sweet and yummy. We usually order those along with some egg rolls. The egg rolls are large so 1 per person is about right. Delivery is also available and they guys are always friendly and respectful. I love this place. I call in a order and they always tell me it will be about 1/2 hour, but I always get it within 15-20 min. It's always hot and delish. The food is always good, we have a 'standard' order, but have tried a large bit of the menu now. We probably order there 2-3 times a month, when we get home too late to cook... they are super friendly, and the lady who generally answers the phone (one of the owners I think) has a fantastic memory... she knows our favorite order better than I do and can rattle it off for me. This is the first time I have eaten from this particular place. I ordered for delivery and the guy who answered the phone was very short with me. I got my food from the nice delivery lady. They give you good sized portions. I got a half order of crab Rangoon which was not good, it wasn't sweet at all and had little to no crab and tasted like old grease. I got a order of fried dumplings and I had to spit them out it was so gross. I also got a combination plate of mixed vegetables with Szechuan sauce, fried rice and an egg roll. I loved the mixed vegetables and the fried rice wasn't to bad. But the egg roll was really good. Overall I won't seek this place out for my Chinese fix but in a pinch it will do. General tso chicken was way to sweet, the pork fried rice was a strange bright yellow color that I did not quite understand and the crab Rangoon were lacking any sign of crab and we're the really sweet kind I do not prefer.
