This wonderfully decorated restaurant that was filled with Asian culture was awesome. I can't believe how awesome it was. They had some very nice pieces of Asian Art all throughout the place. The food was great. The presentation was exceptional. The soup was delicious. The spring rolls were delicious. The heavenly beef was very good. It was some type of beef jerky. The pad Thai rice was good with just enough spice. I asked for a 2 for the spice level. The customer service was great. Our server did a great job. I believe they said he was the owner. He checked on us often. He offered suggestions. He kept our drinks full. He was very personable. Additionally he had a wonderful since if humor. I left very impressed and full. Everything was reasonably priced. There is parking in front. The one area in which they need some improvements was the restroom. Bann Thai is a reasonably priced great option. This was our second time there and although they were super short on staff the food was awesome. Ambience is a typical strip mall restaurant, but definitely on the better side. Service was friendly and despite a few minor snafus - which they handled with grace - service was good. I would rather have a service snafu handled with grace than a perfect service from an attitudinal jerk, wouldn't you? The food is where it shines. Check out the specials. We had a couple of specials and a couple of items off the menu. We split all of it and took home leftovers. The first special we got as an appetizer was Thai crab cakes. These were crab cakes not so fake breadcrumbed sugary nightmare. Real crab with almost no filler. They were small and fried (no greasy). Served with a flavorful red curry sauce that was delicious and complex. Topped with flash fried fresh basil. This was a perfect dish. We also had fresh spring rolls, pad prik with chicken, and crab fried rice. It was all delicious. The crab fried rice is also real crab. With two pepsi colas and a good tip, it was still under $80. I shop and dine just down from Bann Thai and never knew it was there. Seriously, I drive up and down Rte 157 and never noticed this little strip center that sits off the road and down in a hollow. It kind of makes it a hidden treasure and I'm glad that I found it. My visit was during a Saturday lunch and I was impressed. I started my meal with Fried Spring Rolls filled with vegetables and served Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. They were a thin crisp shell, that still gave a nice crunch when bitten into. The sauce was a accompaniment. For an entree I chose, Drunken Noodles and added Beef for my protein. I was torn between Pad Thai and the Drunken Noodle and when I asked my server, she said their most popular dish was Drunken Noodles. Then when I went to add my protein it was between chicken and beef. She said beef was her favorite add, so I went with her recommendation. Once my entree arrived to the table I was surprised by its size. It was huge. It was so big, it could have been a meal for two. Guess who had leftovers for lunch the next day. The noodles were flavorful and lots of tender beef and had plenty of veggies. My spice level was 3 out of 5 and I still was sweating along my hairline. Next visit I may have to scale back to a two. The service was attentive and the young lady who was my server, had a bubbly personality. I also had a young man who brought me my order, checked on me and I wasn't even his table. We love this restaurant because it serves gluten free options. Lately, it has been hit and miss. Our server forgot part of our order including spice level on a dish. Pad See Ew was so extremely salty I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The traditional wide rice noodles in the dish were replaced by fettuccini pasta. The Thai iced coffee also didn't taste authentic, especially when the waitress said they were out of the usual cream cheese topping for it. ???? eek. Finding decent Thai food in the Midwest is a difficult quest. It's often like panning for bronze. So, when I find an outstanding Thai restaurant in the middle of the country it deserves some shout out praise. Bann Thai was not just ok for Southern Illinois standards, it was actually really great. The fried tofu and peanut sauce were outstanding, the fresh spring rolls were delicious and most certainly fresh. And, the panang curry was sublime. Great service and attentive staff made my out of the way visit to Bann Thai well worth the effort. BTW, I've been to Thailand and lived in Seattle and San Francisco. I'm a Thai junkie. This is good. My only suggestion is to ditch the baby corn. It's not authentic and shouldn't be on the menu. Great job! read more

We stopped in for lunch and they are open for dine-in, although we ate outside at one of their picnic benches. They have lunch specials. I had the red curry which was delicious and it came with two crab Rangoon and a small soup that was also very yummy. My partner had the beef and broccoli which they enjoyed as well. What I ordered: I got the golden pillow. I like this fish specifically for the crunchy noodles covered in brown gravy (along with veggies and a protein). I normally get the pad Thai everywhere I go, but the description of this one didn't seem very good. It seemed to be lacking the veggies and toppings that I normally like. My bf got the green curry. He said it was good, but was disappointed that it didn't have eggplant in it. I also ordered jasmine tea, which was brought out in a black tea kettle and was plenty of tea to share for the both of us! The server was nice and took care of us. I will only take service from them if I return after my next statement. Our server Alyssa was the complete opposite. And I'm still grossed out. But as she sat in lala land in the corner mean mugging the room and her fellow employees but she decided to serve herself a snack from her nose. Yes we saw this girl eat her boogers. I legit almost asked for a manager cuz that's some nasty health department issue cuz the girl did not wash her hands and went and touch silverware before we left at the end of our meal. Knowing this probably isn't the first nor the last time this has occured makes it hard to enjoy the delightful food. I hope management can have more Tiffany and Josh's at least high quality etiquette and customer service seems to be guaranteed. The basil fried rice tasted delicious but was mushy. The Pad Thai was also delicious lots of meat and vegetables...but it wasn't Pad Thai There were about five pads in the dish. When I order Pad Thai I expect lots of noodles. Like I said, this had like five. Now if this order came at 20 minutes to close. I might be more lenient. But we ordered just after work at 5. While the food was okay, I would not personally recommend this restaurant. I ordered General Tso chicken and to be completely honest, it wasn't that great. It tasted as if there was some kind of curry spice in it, which I'm not personally a big fan of, but if that's something you like, then this is the place for you. This review is NOT about portion size but food quality. I took about a year off from this place because of constantly being disappointed by the lack of consistency in the way that their key dishes are prepared. I took a break from them because of two occasions of burnt rice (smell and taste burnt rice). The last time I had their general tso's chicken, it was rubbery versus crispy. Fast forward one year later...Well I spent $60 giving them another try after a year and let's just say it's a wrap. All of my dishes, the rice is burned, you can see some flecks in the rice but more importantly, you can taste and smell that the rice is burnt. The only reason why I was even entertaining going here is because my favorite Thai place is 45 minutes away. Rice is like a staple, how do you consistently mess this up? Sometimes, I just try to give grace - I think they're probably busy or short staffed. Plain and simple, the food was crappy and the rice was burnt, even the egg rolls were crispy and burnt on the ends, I don't know they refried to heat them up or what the case was.
